| Reliable IR temperature
measurement in extreme conditions |
| |
Optris
GmbH: The ratio pyrometer optris CTratio 1M is
designed for non-contact measurement of temperatures in
the range between 700°C and 1800°C. Its functional
principle guarantees precise measurements even when the
field of view is severely occluded, for example by
fumes. This makes it highly useful for applications in
harsh environments as they prevail in the metal and
glass industries. With the CTratio 1M, Optris has added
a ratio pyrometer with fibre optic cable to its
high-performance series. The measuring instrument is
used especially in ambient temperatures up to 250°C
where the measuring head requires no cooling. In
contrast to traditional connections, the optical
multi-fibre cables used here comprise multiple
interwoven glass fibres. This makes the fibre highly
break-resistant, so that the pyrometer can be installed
in difficult-to-access areas and maze-like production
environments. Cables are deliverable in lengths up to 22
m to cover the majority of installation scenarios. Other
advantages are the very fast response time of 5 ms and
an integrated laser sight to mark the actual spot size. ... |

| High stability Infrared sensor IC enables
fast, accurate temperature measurements in demanding
environments |
| |
Melexis:
A common challenge for current high end thermometer guns
is their sensitivity to fast temperature changes in
their environment. A stabilization period of up to ½
hour in a new environment is often necessary to achieve
accurate measurements. The new MLX90616ESF-HCA
thermopile sensor with integrated electronic
stabilization function uses proprietary Melexis
technology to reduce the stabilization period to less
than half a minute. The MLX90616ESF-HCA incorporates a
secondary thermopile sensor to detect temperature
variations in the package and in the optical assembly.
The signal of this secondary sensor is used to
compensate electronically for the adverse effect on the
measurement. In this way it is possible to make a
thermometer gun which stabilizes in seconds and gives
accurate results in extreme, demanding, environments.
The MLX90616 is intended to be used in applications
where the user places a lens in front of the sensor to
adjust the FOV to his application. The sensor-lens
combination temperature measurement must be calibrated
by the customer. Melexis provides the necessary software ... |

Process integration of IR thermometers made easy |
| |
|
Showcasing
an innovative interface concept at the upcoming
SPS/IPC/Drives exhibition in Nurnberg (Hall 4A,
Booth 130), Berlin-based sensor manufacturer
Optris will demonstrate how
easily and quickly infrared thermometers can be
integrated into automated systems. All their
infrared measuring devices which, in addition to
the sensor head are also featuring a separate
electronics box, implement multiple concepts for
the interfacing with automation systems. Beside
the analog interface there are no less than six
digital interfaces to choose from. In this way,
customers can select and install the interface
which best suits their application and
environmental conditions. All interfaces are
bidirectional, allowing parameters to be both
sent and received. The temperature sensor can be
connected to a network or controller using
RS232, RS485, USB, CAN, Profibus DP or Ethernet.
Specific measuring set-ups are required for
example for measurements of various materials
having different emissivities. This digital
communication feature allows users to assign
parameters easily. It also dispenses with the
need for an A/D converter. Also, digital
interfaces are able to bridge long distances,
making installations much more flexible. ... |

Sensirion launches first digital temperature sensor |
| |
|
Following
the successful market launch of the
SHT2x family of humidity and temperature
sensors, Sensirion is
now launching a sensor designed
exclusively for temperature measurement.
The new STS21 temperature sensor is
based on the same chip as the SHT2x
family and is housed in a tiny DFN
package measuring only 3x3 mm. This
makes the sensor ideal for use in
applications where only very limited
space is available. It also delivers
outstanding performance and remarkably
high accuracy of ±0.22 °C over the
temperature range of 5 to 60 °C,
combined with very low power consumption
– an especially important consideration
for battery-operated devices. The STS21
is pin and protocol compatible with
Sensirion’s standard SHT21 humidity
sensor, but it has a different I2C
address. This allows the STS21 to be
used as alternative to the SHT21 in
applications where temperature
measurement is required and humidity
measurement is optional, since the same
hardware can be used with both sensors.

Save on installation costs with combined CO2/temperature measurement |
| |
|
E+E
Elektronik has added an additional
passive temperature measurement function to the
tried-and-tested EE85 CO2 transmitter for
precise measurement of CO2 concentrations and
temperatures in HVAC applications. CO2 and
temperature measurement in a single device cuts
installation costs for sensors. The combined CO2
temperature transmitter is ideally suited for
applications in the fields of building
management and demand controlled ventilation.
The elegant, compact housing enables easy
installation directly at the ventilation duct
using a mounting flange. The CO2 measurement of
the EE85 is carried out using infrared
technology (NDIR). The patented auto-calibrate
function compensates for any ageing effects
(even if there is no fresh air supply) and
ensures excellent long-term stability. The air
to be monitored is conveyed to the measurement
cell in the housing by means of convection via
the measuring head and a 12-mm pipe. The
exchange of gas with the measurement cell is
performed by diffusion via a diaphragm. In this
way, the gas in the measurement cell circulates
in a closed system. This prevents any soiling of
the optical measurement path and any associated
inaccuracies in the measurements. The
temperature the sensor is installed directly in
the tip of the measurement sensor and optimally
protected against soiling by a diaphragm filter.
The passive temperature sensor signal is
available at the connection terminals in the
housing ... |

B+B minimize Thermocouples |
| |
|
Using Thermocouples for measuring temperature is always a
compromise. Is a quick response time for temperature changes
required, the thermocouple needs to be as thin as possible,
which results in very sensitive probes. If stability is required
the response time increases. B+B Thermo-Technik
offers the solution with swaged Thermocouples .
Those Thermocouples provide a high grade
stability and a quick response time for
temperature changes. As standard dimensions B+B
Thermo-Technik offers 6mm Thermocouples swaged
down to 3mm and 3mm Thermocouples swaged down to
1,5mm diameter. Due to this technology every
user of Thermocouples is provided with both
advantages. Stability of a 6mm Thermocouple in
combination with the quick response time of 3mm
Thermocouple. Hence this swaged Thermocouples

the monitoring of metal and
composites can now be achieved
at close to room temperature.
The 1M devices are calibrated
for up to 1800°C for high
temperature applications such as
welding or hardening. Portable
devices are used e.g. in
hardening shops where
temperature measurement takes
place infrequently within
performance- and time-based
facilities. Should a large
number of infrared measurement
points be arranged (OEM-usage),
the small and affordable
stationary devices of the
compact series can be used.
Through efficient optics of the
sensors of the high performance
series, smallest objects can be
measured starting from a size of
0.5 mm and can be exactly
targeted through an innovative

sensor, dedicated to Tyre Temperature Monitoring. That product
was developed first for Formula1 application. It allows to
measure a line of 8 spots on a tyre width and therefore if
installed at the correct distance will give the surface tyre
temperature distribution. These 8 Channel temperatures are
directly sent on the CAN Bus of the data Logging System. The
Texense IRN8, combining perfect accuracy at 140°C (+/- 1%FS) and
good temperature compensation, is the ideal solution to measure
surface tire temperature on the whole width in most severe

PT100 probe sensor for fast temperature changes |
| |
|
Fast
response times are a characteristic feature of
the new Pt100 probe sensors of ifm
electronic. They can be used for highly
precise temperature measurements in industrial
applications. Short response times of T05 = 1 s
and T09 = 3 s detect temperature changes in a
very short time and thus enable optimum process
monitoring. The fast response time is achieved
by using the latest technologies in connection
with a 6 mm sensor tip. Nevertheless the sensors
with high-grade stainless steel housing are
extremely robust and have a pressure rating of
up to 160 bar. A special version with titanium
housing is suited for use in aggressive media.
In combination with the high protection rating
IP 68 / IP 69K the sensors can be used in many
different applications of industrial process
control. ... |

Heimann Sensor introduces new thermopile infrared sensors of the HMS
series with integrated lens |
| |
|
Heimann
Sensor is manufacturing thermopile sensors in TO
packages for many years. The HMS series features several chip
sizes in combination with various optical filters in housing
size “TO46” or even smaller. Since the packages are small and
the filter windows are in close distance to the sensor chip
these sensors normally have a large field of view. But for some
applications, like for example a forehead thermometer, it would
be of advantage to have a small and well defined field of view.
Heimann Sensor solved this problem by replacing the filter
window with a diffractive silicon lens. These silicon lenses are
manufactured on wafer level by Heimann Sensor and can be coated
with different infrared LWP coatings. The cap design had to be
adjusted so that the cap height matches the focal length of the
lens. Again different chip types can be combined with lenses
with different coatings. ... |

Handy and ingenious temperature plug from ifm electronic |
| |
|
ifm
electronic gmbh: Every so often an idea
comes along that makes you think ‘why didn’t I
think of that?’ or ‘why has nobody done that
before?’ Well just such an idea is the
ingeniously simple new TP temperature
transmitter from sensor market leader ifm
electronic Ltd. Common usage dictates that Pt
temperature probes are connected to a "head
transmitter" to transfer the signal; but in this
day and age that is outmoded. The TP temperature
plug from ifm replaces cumbersome, leaky
outmoded boxes with the latest in electronics
and connector technology, requiring a lot less
space, performing better and costing less into
the bargain. ifm electronic already supplies
type TT or TS Pt 100 and Pt1000 temperature
pickups with an integral M12 connector not only
for ease of connection, but also a seal of at
least IP67 and a robust mechanical link. That
probe can now be plugged directly into the TP,
which will send the resulting measurement as a
4-20mA signal back to the panel, via another M12
sealed connector. Further, using M12 connectors
all round means that the transmitter can
actually be mounted anywhere between the probe

Function tests of assembled circuit boards using IR temperature
measurement |
| |
|
Optris
GmbH: More and more
manufacturer of electronic components
and circuit boards turn to the use of
non-contact temperature measurement due
to the increasing productivity of their
components. The thermal behaviour can be
captured and optimised through the use
of modern infrared measurement devices –
without influencing the measuring
object. Infrared cameras are used for
accurate thermal analysis at
electronically components, e.g. in cases
where not only one critical component
exists or the component can not be
clearly defi ned. Weak points can be
localised by the camera through the
demonstration of thermal images. A
detailed real time analysis of the
thermal behaviour of assembled circuit
boards, used in the F&E field or for
serial production, can be achieved
through the assistance of an infrared
thermal imager. The standardized USB2.0
interface allows video recording of 120

Rethinking Maintenance Procedures Using IR Thermometers |
| |
|
Optris
GmbH:
Noncontact temperature monitoring is an essential
tool for ensuring the safety and reliability of
equipment. As alternative solutions to portable thermal
imagers, both portable and fixed infrared thermometers
are gaining importance in preventive maintenance
applications, the latter for example in OEM solutions
and for the infrared monitoring of large plants with a
multitude of measuring points. The detection of defects
in switchgear, fuses, motors or electrical connections
is almost impossible with the naked eye. But we do know
that almost any electrical device will get warmer than
normal very soon after an anomaly occurs. In complement
to portable thermal imagers, highend portable infrared
thermometers are now increasingly used for the detection
of weak spots. Fixed pyrometers are used predominantly
in plants where electrical or mechanical components to
be monitored are hard or impossible to reach. Using
portable precision pyrometers for preventive maintenance

Miniature infrared sensor with laser aiming |
| |
|
Micro-Epsilon
has launched a new miniature infrared sensor
with an integrated controller. The thermoMETER CSlaser
has a two-beam laser aiming feature, which marks the
actual spot size at any distance. This means that faulty
measurements on small objects are avoided. The
controller, which is often also required, is not
necessary with this model, because the controller is
alreadyintegrated into the sensor. This represents a
major technical advantage, especially where space is
limited. The sensor can be optimised for specific
measurement tasks by using different lenses. Objects of
0.5mm in size can be measured reliably at a distance of
150mm from the sensor. The CSlaser is available as an SF
version (8 to 14µm) with a measuring range between -50°C
and 975°C for general tasks, and as M-2 (1.6µm) with a
range of 385°C to 1,600°C for applications in ... |

In April 2010 Sensirion started serial production of the
SHT21, the standard version of its new generation of
digital humidity and temperature sensors. Now, on the
occasion of the Electronica 2010 trade show, the sensor
manufacturer is launching a high-precision version for
applications with stringent accuracy requirements.
According to Marketing & Sales Manager, responsible for
the new product, “The SHT25 rounds out the familiy of
digital humidity and temperature sensors, in the same way as the
high-end versions of the SHT1x and SHT7x series. This
represents a milestone on the product roadmap of the
world’s smallest digital humidity sensors.” The SHT25
precisely measures relative humidity over a range of 0
to 100% RH and temperature over a range of -40 to

25°C) for relative humidity and +-0.2°C for temperature.
For both quantities, the typical tolerance is small even
at the limits of the measuring range. The maximum
tolerance is 2% relative humidity or +-0.3°C over a wide
range, as shown by the adjacent figures. This enables
the new SHT25 to achieve significantly better accuracy,
especially for temperature measurements. ... |

informs: “The infrared thermometers of this new
performance class are used for temperature measurements
in wide ranges of the manufacturing industry on the
product, on the machine or on the tool. More and more
OEM are realizing these sensors as an essential part of
their machine where the temperature control of smallest
objects matters. Opposite to many conventional
pyrometers with single laser, which are only marking the
center and not the real size of the measuring spot, the
CSlaser comes with an innovative double sighting laser.
Both of the beams are following exactly the
infrared-optical path and marking exactly the real spot
size at any distance. Wrong measurements will be
avoided. The smallest spot of 0,5mm (2M model) is
reached on the CSlaser at the cross point of both laser
beams at 150mm. A variety of different focus versions
allows an adaptation to the current installation
circumstances. ... |

SHT21 Humidity and Temperature Sensor – AEC-Q100
reliability confirmed again |
| |
|
Sensirion’s
new SHT21 humidity and temperature sensor has now been qualified in
accordance with the AEC-Q100 automotive standard. This confirms the
outstanding reliability, stability and robustness of the humidity and
temperature sensor, which
has been in regular production since April 2010. Successful AEC-Q100
qualification is remarkable in the sense that humidity sensors, unlike
fully encapsulated electronic components, are constantly exposed to
their surroundings and sensitive to ambient conditions. During the
qualification process, the SHT21 was put through the series of tests
specified by AEC-Q100. In the High Temperature Operating Lifetime (HTOL)
test, the humidity and temperature sensor was operated at 125°C for 1000 hours to test its aging
characteristics. The 96-hour Unbiased Highly Accelerated Stress Test (UHST)
at 130°C and 85% relative humidity confirmed the sensor’s stress
resistance. Furthermore, the package was tested in the Temperature
Cycling (TC) test with 1000 cycles between -50°C and +150°C, which
measures the compatibility of the packaging material with the chip and
the substrate. The series concluded with the Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) tests, which indicate the
robustness of the humidity and temperature sensor with regard to these two parameters. The SHT21
humidity and temperature sensor passed all of the tests ... |

Geothermal heat flow transducer |
| |
|
ITI Company: The Model GHT Series Geothermal
Heat Flow Transducer measures directly, local heat fluxes in the
earth. Bidirectional steady-state and transient heat flow may be
sensed quantitatively and displayed upon any standard millivolt
recorder. Integration of the resulting signal yields the mean
flux over any desired time interval. In use, the transducer may
be either embedded in the earth, or attached to a body for
surface heat flux measurements. The D.C. signal generated by the
transducer is conducted to the readout be means of a waterproof
cable. Upon attaining thermal equilibrium with its surroundings,
the transducer develops a voltage, which is directly
proportional to the local heat flux. An array of three
transducers, positioned at mutual right angles, yields the
magnitude as well as the direction of the resultant heat flow.

KROHNE
introduces the new OPTITEMP TT 51 temperature transmitter. The device
was especially designed for use in the chemical industry. In keeping
with industry requirements, the transmitter guarantees accurate
measurements over the long term and superior reliability. For use in
safety-related applications, the OPTITEMP TT 51 features SIL2 approval
as per IEC 61508. Constant measuring accuracy over a long period of time
is crucial when it comes to monitoring process temperatures. The
OPTITEMP TT 51 features a newly developed electronic system that boasts
a long-term measuring error of just 0.05% of the span. Considered over a
period of five years, the long-term error is a mere quarter of the drift
of comparable temperature transmitters. The superior reliability of a
measuring station equipped with an OPTITEMP TT 51 temperature
transmitter can be attributed to more than one principle. The OPTITEMP
TT 51 features SmartSense insulation monitoring to detect moisture in
the measuring insert. If the measuring insert (and the sensor element)
absorbs moisture, the electrical isolation resistance immediately
decreases, resulting in a measurement error. ... |

World’s smallest digital humidity and
temperature sensor:
SHT21 |
| |
|
With
its new SHT21, Sensirion has presented the smallest digital
humidity and temperature sensor to an intrigued audience in 2009. In the
meantime the sensor has been characterized and qualified, and thousands
of samples have been provided to interested users. The start of serial
production is scheduled for April 2010. The SHT21 consists of a newly
designed, sophisticated sensor chip encapsulated in a DFN 3-0 package.
With this encapsulation the chip is completely over-molded, except the
humidity sensing area. In this way, the components size is reduced to a
3x3-mm footprint with 1.1-mm height. Additionally, over-molding provides
excellent protection against aging and ambient impact, such as
condensation and harsh environments, and thus yields outstanding
long-term stability. The fully calibrated state of the sensor and its
true I2C digital interface ensure an easy application. Analog output
modes (such as PWM) are available on request. The digital communication
mode enables superb low power consumption: A value in the range of 3μW
at normal operation is well achieved and it may be lowered further by
increasing the measurement interval. Typical sensor accuracy is ... |

JUMO Wtrans - Wireless temperature
measuring system with ATEX approval and electronic modules up to 125°C |
| |
|
More
versions have been added to the JUMO Wtrans temperature measuring
system, taking into account diverse customer requests for products
covering a wide variety of different areas of application. New to the
product line is a transmitter with ATEX approval. Also new to the Wtrans
family of products are transmitters containing a highly
temperature-resistant electronics module, that can be used up to a
temperature of 125°C. Transmitters with ATEX approval can be put
directly into a potentially explosive atmosphere. The receiver is
mounted outside the actual EX zone. This means that cost-intensive
installations with protective barriers and supply isolators are
unnecessary. JUMO’s wireless technology shows a totally new approach
here, and allows the customer to transmit temperature measurements
across boundaries, out of the EX zone. The Wtrans transmitter can be
located in Zone 0, right up to the process connection. In this example,
the probe handle is in Zone 1. Of course, it is also possible to operate
the entire instrument in Zone 1. ... |

Temperature sensors for cold meters |
| |
|
JUMO
is presenting an extensive range of nationally approved temperature
sensors to be used for cold measurement. These include the so-called
“direct short” short temperature sensors to EN 1434 and the long
temperature sensors for direct installation and for immersion sleeve
application. There are special connecting cables and seals to ensure
that the system remains tightly sealed and reliable, even after several
thousand changes in temperature, that can fall below the dew point. The
implementation of European Measuring Instrument Directive 2204/22/EC
(MID) has regulated approval and placing on the market for heat meters
and other measuring instruments, throughout Europe. As well as heat
energy for heating, cold energy for air conditioning and cooling is now
also gaining importance, so that this form of energy also has to be
precisely measured for accurate billing. The European directive itself
only recognizes the heat meter as a measuring instrument, but not a cold
meter. Until the MID came into force, the area of cold measurement in
Germany was covered by heat meters. ... |

Sensors for wind turbine systems |
| |
|
In
its latest brochure, measurement technology specialist Micro-Epsilon
is presenting new possibilities for displacement, profile and
temperature measurement of wind turbine systems. The brochure provides
details on the specific benefits associated with the use of sensors in
specific applications and describes the sensor required for this. For
example, highlighted are the condition monitoring possibilities that
arise from the use of IR temperature sensors. Amongst other things, the
thermoMETER CT sensors are used for the temperature measurement of the
generator windings or for the rotor gearbox. Noticeable, abnormal
temperature developments indicate a technical problem, which can then be
rectified before any major repairs are required. Minimising shutdown
times is therefore possible. In addition to temperature measurement,
examples of displacement and profile measurement for quality assurance
purposes during the manufacture of ... |

WATER MANAGER SOLUTION: Transmission of
Water Level- and Temperature-Data via GSM/GPRS, Radio, or Internet |
| |
|
February
2010: STS’ newly developed watermanager solution allows for
conveniently managing and reading data loggers from any location at any
time. In case of an out-of-limits condition, a warning message is

Ratio pyrometer for hot applications |
| |
|
Measurement
technology company Micro-Epsilon has extended its range of
temperature sensors with a new ratio pyrometer. The new thermoMETER CT
ratio will be on display at the SPS|IPC|DRIVES exhibition in Nürnberg.
The sensor is a non-contact temperature sensor, which is only dependent
on the emissivity ratio but not on the absolute emissivity. The sensor
measures by using two short wavelengths close to each other and forms a
ratio from this. The emissivity of the target is therefore no longer
required for measurements. A faultless measurement is also possible even
in the case of a 95% weakening of the IR radiation due to smoke or
steam. The sensor provides a measuring range of 700°C to 1,800°C at a
maximum ambient temperature of 250°C without cooling and is primarily
used in metal processing applications. The sensor electronics unit
enables connection to Profibus, Ethernet, USB, RS232 or RS485. The
thermoMETER CT ratio operates with an optical fibre between sensor and
electronics. Therefore, electromagnetic radiation has no influence on
the sensor. A sighting laser is projected onto the target by the lens of
the sensor; this enables constant mapping of the real measuring spot
size. The standard focus of the lens is at a distance of 60mm. Using an
additional, variable focussing lens, the user can set the focus point
between 65mm and 300mm. The pyrometer can be used as a standard
single-channel IR sensor or as a ratio pyrometer. ... |

Rugged Pressure and Temperature Switches
for Nuclear Power Stations |
| |
|
With
the series ZPN, ZDPN and ZT, Baumer offers very robust pressure
and temperature switches developed especially for the use in nuclear
power stations. The pressure switches are suitable for pneumatic or
hydraulic control, for power generation safety equipments and for
pressurized chambers control. They are resistant to short duration
overpressure and show a good vibration resistance. The ZPN can measure a
gauge pressure from -1 bar up to 600 bar with a very small intermediate
range from -2 mbar up to 10 mbar. The ZDPN measures a differential
pressure from 2 mbar up to 120 bar. The pressure switches maintain a
constant pressure around a chosen set value. When the pressure reaches a
critical pre-set value, they trigger an alarm or safety system. A
flexible diaphragm actuates a micro-switch via a piston. The set point
adjustment is realised via a compressible spring mounted on the
opposite. Due to the force-balance principle, the dead band setting
remains constant, even with different set point adjustments. With rapid
pressure variations, an attenuator should be used to prevent a temporary
on- and off-switching. The ZT temperature switches are suitable for ... |

Wireless & Batteryless temperature
measurement: revolutionary products by SENSeOR |
| |
|
These latest wireless temperature sensing solutions for harsh
environments are specifically tailored for new applications until now
unexpected regarding critical equipment monitoring as well as process
control. New-generation products commercially available. SENSeOR
announces three unique wireless temperature sensing solutions based on
SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) sensors particularly designed for the most
demanding industrial applications. More than a rudimentary wireless
measure, SENSeOR’s innovative solutions own a very special feature: they
are totally passive. Sensors are indeed only powered by the energy of
radio waves emitted by the associated reader unit when remotely
interrogating the devices in real-time. The ensuing benefits are then
unique. First of all, without any batteries nor active electronic
components at sensor level, these cutting-edge sensing solutions are
perfectly appropriate for use in explosive atmospheres or irradiated
environments at temperatures reaching +175°C today (current in-house R&D
efforts target +350°C) with almost unlimited autonomy. In addition, by
avoiding problematical wires these maintenance-free and light-weight
sensors can either be mounted onto an extensive range of rotating and
moving machinery parts or be implemented in inaccessible places. As a
result, two thermowell-packaged wireless temperature probes SED-100 and
SED-120 are launched on the market (sizes available on request). Not
only they are especially dedicated to wireless temperature measurements

Use DaqPRO to Monitor Fireworks' Quality |
| |
|
Fourier: The discovery of fireworks, in fact the formula for
gunpowder, is commonly believed to have happened by chance in China
2,000 years ago. Three common kitchen ingredients were heated over a
fire and when dried and burned gave a loud bang. Inserting this into a
bamboo stick led to early fire crackers. Today the field of pyrotechnics
is developing rapidly and China is recognized as the number one producer
of quality fireworks, in terms of technology. There is a huge market in
China, since fireworks play a crucial role in ritual and festivities,
but also as a major exporter. One leader in the Chinese fireworks
industry, recently had their products tested with the DaqPRO solution by
the China National Key Laboratory for pyrotechnic testing. This official
body is situated in Hunan province and plays a key role in defining
national safety standards in manufacture, acceptance checks, sales,
transportation, storage and launching of fireworks. To ensure safer and
more environmentally-friendly offerings and meet safety regulations both
at home and abroad, the company takes quality inspection very seriously.
They were looking for a solution that would maintain their product's
high quality reputation. They considered the DaqPRO to be the answer.
The independent data acquisition solution could stand alone in extreme
testing conditions and allowed for the measurement of very high
temperatures via the type T thermocouple sensor which can measure up to
400 degrees centigrade. One or more heat flux sensors are ... |

DataNet Network for Government Monitored
Umbilical Cord Blood Lab |
| |
|
Fourier Systems Ltd.: The DataNet system application is an
umbilical cord laboratory where cord blood stem cell research is carried
out and cord blood is stored. The Taiwanese government requires daily
reports on the laboratory's deep cold refrigerators and room humidity
and temperature environment status. To meet the government requirements
they needed a computerized solution that could measure and produce
printed reports via the lab computer system. The lab decided that the
DataNet solution features were most appropriate in helping them respond
to Ministry of Health's strict regulations. Umbilical cord blood is
considered a key resource in stem cell research. Until recently
umbilical cord blood was considered medical waste to be disposed of
after the birth of a newborn, however today medical perceptions have
dramatically changed. Today umbilical cord blood and the plentiful
cryopreservation of the stem cells found in the cord blood are
considered life saving. Umbilical cord blood is a 100 percent biological
match to the newborn. Commonly the blood is now used in stem research
and stored in specialized cord blood banks. These specimens perform two
potentially valuable functions. They can help future patients in need of
stem cell transplants or act as a private source for the newborn child
and their family. A simple network has been applied and utilizes five
DNL920 loggers, one DNL910 and one Receiver. The external PT100
temperature sensor measures room temperature and the internal RH sensor
monitors humidity inside the laboratory. Additional sensors including
thermocouple temperature sensors, with a range as low as -80º C, are
used to ... |

JUMO level and temperature sensor for
commercial verhicles, construction and agricultural machinery |
| |
|
JUMO:
To keep an engine or gears in optimum working order, numerous parameters
have to be continuously monitored, with corrective intervention should
there be any deviation. Two of these parameters are the oil level and
the oil temperature. The combined level and temperature sensor aids
vehicle diagnostics in modern commercial vehicles, construction
machinery and agricultural machinery. With this level sensor, which uses
the hot-wire principle, it is possible to determine the level of the
gear oil or engine oil in a 150 mm measurement section. Only by
monitoring the level of the liquid can we be certain that the engine is
not running with too much oil, or that, unobserved, the level has
dropped to too little. Engine damage is avoided. The level sensor is
also available with an additional temperature sensor. The temperature
sensor is designed with a Pt1000 shunt resistor conforming to EN 60751,
Class B, in a 2-wire circuit. But Pt100 and Pt500 sensors, as well as
NTC and semiconductor sensors, are also possible. The hot-wire voltage
signal and the temperature sensor resistance signal are forwarded
separately to the vehicle electronics for evaluation. The JUMO level and
temperature sensor is designed for continuous operation at a temperature ... |

install and there is no need for a complicated mounting device, as is
the case with conventional, fitted thermostats. To use this
electromechanical thermostat, the first of its kind in the world with
“Push-In®” terminal technology, simply insert the connecting wires into
the connecting points as far as they will go. That’s it! There’s no tool
to connect the wire or the strand with the ferrule and the wiring is
more reliable. This solution also saves considerable time and money,
compared with using a conventional screw terminal. “Push-in®” technology
allows loads up to 16 A to be directly connected at 230 V AC. Because a
contactor is not required, the cost of installation falls still further.
Maintenance costs are reduced, thanks to the small interval of <10 K
from the point of shutting off the safety temperature limiter ... |

High-Temperature Sensor Type 6056AU20 |
| |
|
Kistler:
Measurement of cylinder pressure, for example using glow plug adapters,
has made the development of economical high-torque diesel engines
possible for the first time. Sensor development has been also been
ongoing to keep pace with the higher pressures in these engines. One
sensor that meets the requirements of temperature and pressure up to 300
bar is the 6056AU20. It therefore supplements the basic Type 6056A...,
whose design catering for pressures up to 250 bar already covers many
applications. The high-temperature sensor for cylinder pressure
measurement in a glow plug adapter is now also available with a
reinforced diaphragm. The new sensor Type 6056AU20 has been added to the
existing basic Type 6056A... for use in the glow plug adapter. The new
sensor was developed especially for high pressure rise rates or very
high peak pressures. Type 6056AU20 is therefore recommended for
applications in which the pressure exceeds 200 bar and in which extreme
pressure in-creases are also to be expected. The properties and external
dimensions of the sensor are largely identical with ... |

integrated temperature measurement |
| |
|
WIKA
has enabled the clean, hygienic, dead-space free measurement of pressure
and temperature, with long-term stability, with the model 983.xx
diaphragm in-line seal. With its 3A approval it is equally suited to
applications in the food and beverage industry as it is for biochemical,
pharmaceutical or active ingredient manufacturing. Through the
combination of diaphragm in-line seal and resistance thermometer,
pressure and temperature can be measured at one common point in the
pipeline without any restriction in its diameter. WIKA diaphragm in-line
seals are directly integrated into the pipeline and, as a result of
their circular cylindrical design, they are self-draining in all
mounting positions. In conjunction with the pressure gauge they ensure
both dead-space free as well as crevice-free pressure measurement. The
temperature sensor is fixed to the inner wall of the diaphragm in-line
seal, whereby fast, residue-free cleaning of the measuring point is
guaranteed. By combining measurement parameters ... |

Thermowells for temperature measurement in sterile process technology |
| |
|
A
new type of thermowell for the process adaptation of electrical and
mechanical thermometers in sterile process technology has been developed
by WIKA for national and international markets. This development
has incorporated specific customer requests from the food, beverage and
pharmaceutical industries. The thermowell model TW22 is available both
with all standard connection variants, for example milk thread fitting
and clamp connection, and with aseptic connection to DIN 11 864 or the
specially developed welding ball. Ideally, it can be combined with the
TR22 resistance thermometer, which protects the sensor from rough
process conditions. In combination with the TR22 resistance thermometer,
the connection head plus measuring insert can be pulled out. This allows
the thermometer to be calibrated along with the entire measuring chain –
without disconnecting the electrical connections. As this also avoids
opening the process environment, the hygienic risk is drastically
minimised. ... |

Tube surface resistance thermometer with
new contact part |
| |
|
The
new tube surface thermometer from JUMO is ideal for measuring
temperatures on tubing systems and other rounded surfaces. Because
measurement is indirect, the flow characteristics of the medium in the
tube are unaffected. The small, aluminum contact part is suitable for
tubes 10 to 100 mm in diameter. With the retaining strap, mounting is
quick and space-saving. Applying a heat transfer compound between the
tube and the contact part can improve results. The options for
temperature acquisition are Pt 100 or Pt 1000 and KTY or NTC. The choice
of connecting cable is influenced by the measurement temperature
required. Economical versions with a PVC cable can be used up to 105 °C.
More demanding requirements, up to 260 °C, are implemented by a PTFE
cable. The transition to the connecting cable can be reinforced with
anti-kink cable protection. ... |

leading manufacturer and supplier of temperature sensors for heat meters
in Europe. The heat meter, like other measurement devices, is used for
the billing of goods or services (here heating costs) and thus is
subject to the legally binding metrology. In order to be able to be used
in commercial operations, the measurement device previously had to have
a model authorisation. In the required authorisation test, at first the
construction of the device was tested for compliance with the legal
requirements and for the measurement stability. After the measurement
device had been produced, the correct measurement was tested in a state
run testing authority which is independent from the manufacturer. The
measurement device did not receive the calibration stamp until then. ... |

Pressure / temperature transmitter for
dual-mode engines |
| |
|
With
the approval of the Series 22 DT transmitter Keller AG für
Druckmesstechnik, Winterthur (Switzerland) has succeeded in moving
into the area of production engine applications that are governed by
extreme demands. So-called dual-mode vehicles have experienced a
tremendous boom due to the voluntary commitment of European car
manufacturers to reduce CO2 emissions to 140 g/km by 2008. These
vehicles can be operated using normal petrol during the start-up phase
and then with natural gas during continuous operation. The combustion of
natural gas such as methane (CH4) creates 25% less CO2 than petrol with
the same engine performance. The pan-European introduction and promotion
of this dual-mode technology has forced leading manufacturers to undergo
additional system optimisation that includes exact control of the gas
pressure and highly-dynamic measurement of the gas temperature directly
at the distributor (rail). Keller AG für Druckmesstechnik has developed
the transmitters ... |

Smart, Ultra-Small Infrared Thermometer
Targets Medical Needs |
| |
|
Melexis:
The most prominent application for infrared thermometers is measuring
body temperature to check for fever and illness. There are three main
types of IR fever thermometers: ear thermometers, forehead thermometers
and non-contact, distance-read thermometers. Measurement accuracy
depends on a) the calibration accuracy of the thermometer and b) how
accurately the temperature measured on the patient’s exterior can be
translated into an internal body temperature. For most medical
applications, a measurement accuracy of ±0.2°C or better is required.
Melexis now announces the availability of the MLX90615. This is the
world’s first intelligent infrared thermometer integrated into the ultra
small TO-46 package commonly used in the manufacture of ear
thermometers. This ultra-small and cost effective non-contact
thermometer delivers a fully calibrated digital temperature reading
achieved by integrating an infrared sensor with a custom signal
conditioning chip in a TO-46 package. The sensing element in the
MLX90615 is a silicon chip with a thin, micro-machined membrane ... |
