Sensors for wind turbine systems |
| |
In
its latest brochure, measurement technology specialist Micro-Epsilon
is presenting new possibilities for displacement, profile and
temperature measurement of wind turbine systems. The brochure provides
details on the specific benefits associated with the use of sensors in
specific applications and describes the sensor required for this. For
example, highlighted are the condition monitoring possibilities that
arise from the use of IR temperature sensors. Amongst other things, the
thermoMETER CT sensors are used for the temperature measurement of the
generator windings or for the rotor gearbox. Noticeable, abnormal
temperature developments indicate a technical problem, which can then be
rectified before any major repairs are required. Minimising shutdown
times is therefore possible. In addition to temperature measurement,
examples of displacement and profile measurement for quality assurance
purposes during the manufacture of ... |

Water Level- and Temperature-Data via GSM/GPRS, Radio, or Internet |
| |
February
2010: STS’ newly developed watermanager solution allows for
conveniently managing and reading data loggers from any location at any
time. In case of an out-of-limits condition, a warning message is
generated and transmitted automatically via SMS and e-mail. In this way,
a maximum degree of flexibility and cost efficiency is attained with
regard to the monitoring of water levels and temperatures of rivers,
lakes, ground water, sources, and boreholes. The measuring hardware for
GSM/GPRS and radio may be easily installed in a 2"-tube or 4"-tube and
it consists of 3 elements: * A highly accurate pressure and temperature
sensor with stainless steel or titan casing exhibiting a 0.1% accuracy
of the end-scale value as regards pressure/water level and a 0,3°C
accuracy with regard to temperature. The temperature of the medium may
range from -5 to 80 °C. ... |

Rugged Pressure and Temperature Switches
for Nuclear Power Stations |
| |
With
the series ZPN, ZDPN and ZT, Baumer offers very robust pressure
and temperature switches developed especially for the use in nuclear
power stations. The pressure switches are suitable for pneumatic or
hydraulic control, for power generation safety equipments and for
pressurized chambers control. They are resistant to short duration
overpressure and show a good vibration resistance. The ZPN can measure a
gauge pressure from -1 bar up to 600 bar with a very small intermediate
range from -2 mbar up to 10 mbar. The ZDPN measures a differential
pressure from 2 mbar up to 120 bar. The pressure switches maintain a
constant pressure around a chosen set value. When the pressure reaches a
critical pre-set value, they trigger an alarm or safety system. A
flexible diaphragm actuates a micro-switch via a piston. The set point
adjustment is realised via a compressible spring mounted on the
opposite. Due to the force-balance principle, the dead band setting
remains constant, even with different set point adjustments. With rapid
pressure variations, an attenuator should be used to prevent a temporary
on- and off-switching. The ZT temperature switches are suitable for ... |

Kit with wireless and batteryless sensors |
| |
This
SAW-TDK1 demonstration kit from SENSeOR, the world specialist in
SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave)-based sensing solutions operating wirelessly
and without batteries, includes 3 wireless temperature sensors (-20 to
+160°C), a reader unit and a visualization software. Incorporated in
different types of appropriate packagings, tiny (only 5x5x1.5 mm3),
robust and totally passive SAW sensing elements are connected to
customized antennas. Thus they can be mounted in harsh environments
(explosive and/or irradiated atmospheres) as well as in confined and/or
inaccessible places (mobile and rotating machines, tanks, ovens, buried
pipelines, incorporated in materials…) – all this with almost unlimited
autonomy. The reader unit remotely interrogates (typically up to 3
meters) in real-time SAW sensors within the ISM band at 434MHz. This
reader unit connects to a computer (via USB, analog or even Zigbee link)
for data visualization and storage. Once mounted, SAW sensors are
maintenance-free and allow avoiding unwanted cables of wired sensors.
Furthermore, the drawbacks related to the active electronics of

Insulated Bimetal Thermometer TB for Cold
Water Systems |
| |
For
measuring the temperature in cold water systems, Baumer’s product
segment Process Instrumentation offers the bimetal thermometer TB in a
version with thermowell and PVC insulation protecting it against
condensation and hence corrosion. The thermometer is suitable especially
for HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), but also for other
sectors like the food and beverage industry. It can measure temperature
ranges from -30°C up to 500°C. The temperature measuring in cold water
systems, like air conditioning, heat exchangers or cooling water
circuits in nuclear power plants, often implicates corrosion on
pipelines and thermometers due to condensation. For those applications,
Baumer offers the bimetal thermometer series TB in a specially protected
execution with thermowell and a PVC insulation sleeve directly on the
immersion tube. The combination is easy to mount: First, the insulation
sleeve is screwed on the screw-on protection pipe and mounted in the
piping system. After finishing all further installation and construction
works, the thermometer ... |

OMRON takes temperature control to a
higher level |
| |
|
With built-in logic and data bank functions, the new E5_N-H temperature
controllers from Omron allow, in many applications, complete
control systems to be implemented without the need for additional
devices such as timers, mini-PLCs or intelligent relays. Not only does
this provide cost savings, it also makes the systems easier to design,
build, set up and maintain. Based on the proven design of Omron’s E5_N
products, which have established themselves as the world’s best-selling
temperature controllers, the new E5_N-H controllers add process control
features, including enhanced accuracy, speed and communications options.
E5_N-H controllers are available in three sizes: the 1/16 DIN E5CN-H,
the 1/8 DIN E5EN-H and the 1/4 DIN E5AN-H. Most features are common to
all models, but the larger size of the E5EN-H and E5AN-H allows them to
accommodate a three-line display and to provide additional I/O
terminals. Set up and programming for the advanced features of the new
controllers is easily carried out using Omron’s CX-Thermo software, a
Windows-based package that runs on a PC. This provides full access to
all of the controller’s functions, and even allows libraries of
functions to be built, which can be transferred between controllers as
an aid to rapid configuration. ... |

DataNet Network for Government Monitored
Umbilical Cord Blood Lab |
| |
|
Fourier Systems Ltd.: The DataNet system application is an
umbilical cord laboratory where cord blood stem cell research is carried
out and cord blood is stored. The Taiwanese government requires daily
reports on the laboratory's deep cold refrigerators and room humidity
and temperature environment status. To meet the government requirements
they needed a computerized solution that could measure and produce
printed reports via the lab computer system. The lab decided that the
DataNet solution features were most appropriate in helping them respond
to Ministry of Health's strict regulations. Umbilical cord blood is
considered a key resource in stem cell research. Until recently
umbilical cord blood was considered medical waste to be disposed of
after the birth of a newborn, however today medical perceptions have
dramatically changed. Today umbilical cord blood and the plentiful
cryopreservation of the stem cells found in the cord blood are
considered life saving. Umbilical cord blood is a 100 percent biological
match to the newborn. Commonly the blood is now used in stem research
and stored in specialized cord blood banks. These specimens perform two
potentially valuable functions. They can help future patients in need of
stem cell transplants or act as a private source for the newborn child
and their family. A simple network has been applied and utilizes five
DNL920 loggers, one DNL910 and one Receiver. The external PT100
temperature sensor measures room temperature and the internal RH sensor
monitors humidity inside the laboratory. Additional sensors including
thermocouple temperature sensors, with a range as low as -80º C, are
used to ... |

JUMO heatTHERM-DR, the new innovative DIN
rail thermostat |
| |
The
distinguishing features of the new electromechanical thermostats from
JUMO are their great flexibility and their state-of-the-art
connection technology. The instruments of this series can be used for
all current applications that need to measure room, immersion sleeve and
surface temperatures. Thanks to the DIN rail mounting, they are quick to
install and there is no need for a complicated mounting device, as is
the case with conventional, fitted thermostats. To use this
electromechanical thermostat, the first of its kind in the world with
“Push-In®” terminal technology, simply insert the connecting wires into
the connecting points as far as they will go. That’s it! There’s no tool
to connect the wire or the strand with the ferrule and the wiring is
more reliable. This solution also saves considerable time and money,
compared with using a conventional screw terminal. “Push-in®” technology
allows loads up to 16 A to be directly connected at 230 V AC. Because a
contactor is not required, the cost of installation falls still further.
Maintenance costs are reduced, thanks to the small interval of <10 K
from the point of shutting off the safety temperature limiter ... |

New High-Temperature Sensor Type 6056AU20 |
| |
Kistler:
Measurement of cylinder pressure, for example using glow plug adapters,
has made the development of economical high-torque diesel engines
possible for the first time. Sensor development has been also been
ongoing to keep pace with the higher pressures in these engines. One
sensor that meets the requirements of temperature and pressure up to 300
bar is the 6056AU20. It therefore supplements the basic Type 6056A...,
whose design catering for pressures up to 250 bar already covers many
applications. The high-temperature sensor for cylinder pressure
measurement in a glow plug adapter is now also available with a
reinforced diaphragm. The new sensor Type 6056AU20 has been added to the
existing basic Type 6056A... for use in the glow plug adapter. The new
sensor was developed especially for high pressure rise rates or very
high peak pressures. Type 6056AU20 is therefore recommended for
applications in which the pressure exceeds 200 bar and in which extreme
pressure in-creases are also to be expected. The properties and external
dimensions of the sensor are largely identical with ... |

Tube surface resistance thermometer with
new contact part |
| |
The
new tube surface thermometer from JUMO is ideal for measuring
temperatures on tubing systems and other rounded surfaces. Because
measurement is indirect, the flow characteristics of the medium in the
tube are unaffected. The small, aluminum contact part is suitable for
tubes 10 to 100 mm in diameter. With the retaining strap, mounting is
quick and space-saving. Applying a heat transfer compound between the
tube and the contact part can improve results. The options for
temperature acquisition are Pt 100 or Pt 1000 and KTY or NTC. The choice
of connecting cable is influenced by the measurement temperature
required. Economical versions with a PVC cable can be used up to 105 °C.
More demanding requirements, up to 260 °C, are implemented by a PTFE
cable. The transition to the connecting cable can be reinforced with
anti-kink cable protection. ... |

Insertion probe with new plastic handle |
| |
Insertion
probes from JUMO have been used successfully in the food industry
for many years. The market is increasingly demanding smaller designs.
Which is why a compact plastic handle has been developed for insertion
thermocouples and resistance thermometers. The new handle feels really
good, is practical and makes life easier. Not only that, but its low
weight ensures that the insertion probe does not slip out of the product
during cooking. The plastic used is food safe, resistant to oil-based
and acidic cleaning agents and suitable for temperatures up to 260 °C,
for brief periods as high as 300 °C. Of course, it has the usual
industry features such as protection rating IP 67, high mechanical
strength, imperviousness to steam and high pressure resistance. The
measuring insert can be set out as a thermocouple and resistance
thermometer in the familiar designs with one, two, three or four test

Pressure / temperature transmitter for
dual-mode engines |
| |
With
the approval of the Series 22 DT transmitter Keller AG für
Druckmesstechnik, Winterthur (Switzerland) has succeeded in moving
into the area of production engine applications that are governed by
extreme demands. So-called dual-mode vehicles have experienced a
tremendous boom due to the voluntary commitment of European car
manufacturers to reduce CO2 emissions to 140 g/km by 2008. These
vehicles can be operated using normal petrol during the start-up phase
and then with natural gas during continuous operation. The combustion of
natural gas such as methane (CH4) creates 25% less CO2 than petrol with
the same engine performance. The pan-European introduction and promotion
of this dual-mode technology has forced leading manufacturers to undergo
additional system optimisation that includes exact control of the gas
pressure and highly-dynamic measurement of the gas temperature directly
at the distributor (rail). Keller AG für Druckmesstechnik has developed
the transmitters ... |

| |
SenGenuity,
the sensors division of Vectron International, today announced
that its TempTrackr™ Wireless Temperature Measurement System Kit is now
capable of reading six independent passive, wireless temperature
sensors. Each sensor operates in a unique frequency band, which prevents
cross-talk with other sensors and provides them unique identification
within the system architecture. Based on surface acoustic wave (SAW)
technology, the sensors require no batteries or external power supply.
They are powered by electromagnetic bursts generated by a wireless
transceiver, which serves to power the sensors and listen to response
signals generated by them. A change in the frequency of the response
signal is indicative of a change in the temperature being measured. The
TempTrackr™ Wireless Temperature Measurement System is highly scalable

Ratio pyrometer for hot applications |
| |
Measurement
technology company Micro-Epsilon has extended its range of
temperature sensors with a new ratio pyrometer. The new thermoMETER CT
ratio will be on display at the SPS|IPC|DRIVES exhibition in Nürnberg.
The sensor is a non-contact temperature sensor, which is only dependent
on the emissivity ratio but not on the absolute emissivity. The sensor
measures by using two short wavelengths close to each other and forms a
ratio from this. The emissivity of the target is therefore no longer
required for measurements. A faultless measurement is also possible even
in the case of a 95% weakening of the IR radiation due to smoke or
steam. The sensor provides a measuring range of 700°C to 1,800°C at a
maximum ambient temperature of 250°C without cooling and is primarily
used in metal processing applications. The sensor electronics unit
enables connection to Profibus, Ethernet, USB, RS232 or RS485. The
thermoMETER CT ratio operates with an optical fibre between sensor and
electronics. Therefore, electromagnetic radiation has no influence on
the sensor. A sighting laser is projected onto the target by the lens of
the sensor; this enables constant mapping of the real measuring spot
size. The standard focus of the lens is at a distance of 60mm. Using an
additional, variable focussing lens, the user can set the focus point
between 65mm and 300mm. The pyrometer can be used as a standard
single-channel IR sensor or as a ratio pyrometer. ... |

Wireless & Batteryless temperature
measurement: revolutionary products by SENSeOR |
| |
|
These latest wireless temperature sensing solutions for harsh
environments are specifically tailored for new applications until now
unexpected regarding critical equipment monitoring as well as process
control. New-generation products commercially available. SENSeOR
announces three unique wireless temperature sensing solutions based on
SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) sensors particularly designed for the most
demanding industrial applications. More than a rudimentary wireless
measure, SENSeOR’s innovative solutions own a very special feature: they
are totally passive. Sensors are indeed only powered by the energy of
radio waves emitted by the associated reader unit when remotely
interrogating the devices in real-time. The ensuing benefits are then
unique. First of all, without any batteries nor active electronic
components at sensor level, these cutting-edge sensing solutions are
perfectly appropriate for use in explosive atmospheres or irradiated
environments at temperatures reaching +175°C today (current in-house R&D
efforts target +350°C) with almost unlimited autonomy. In addition, by
avoiding problematical wires these maintenance-free and light-weight
sensors can either be mounted onto an extensive range of rotating and
moving machinery parts or be implemented in inaccessible places. As a
result, two thermowell-packaged wireless temperature probes SED-100 and
SED-120 are launched on the market (sizes available on request). Not
only they are especially dedicated to wireless temperature measurements
inside critical equipments ... |

Coaxial multi-point thermocouple TC93
avoids expensive customised designs |
| |
WIKA:
Extensive customised solutions were often necessary to measure
temperature distribution in technical processes. The TC93 coaxial
multi-point thermocouple now represents a flexible and inexpensive
alternative. This new development (patent pending) provides five
measuring points in the installation space of a standard thermometer,
without requiring any auxiliary construction. In addition to the
straightforward design using standard components available from stock,
the TC93 also offers better comparability of the measuring points and an
improved accuracy. The convincing advantages of the TC93 include the
defined heat transfer in the sensor and low cross-sensitivity. Add to
this quick delivery times and the high cost savings potential. This
becomes especially evident when large housings can be saved on, because
the standard connection head can be used to connect 5 measuring points. ... |

Use DaqPRO to Monitor Fireworks' Quality |
| |
|
Fourier: The discovery of fireworks, in fact the formula for
gunpowder, is commonly believed to have happened by chance in China
2,000 years ago. Three common kitchen ingredients were heated over a
fire and when dried and burned gave a loud bang. Inserting this into a
bamboo stick led to early fire crackers. Today the field of pyrotechnics
is developing rapidly and China is recognized as the number one producer
of quality fireworks, in terms of technology. There is a huge market in
China, since fireworks play a crucial role in ritual and festivities,
but also as a major exporter. One leader in the Chinese fireworks
industry, recently had their products tested with the DaqPRO solution by
the China National Key Laboratory for pyrotechnic testing. This official
body is situated in Hunan province and plays a key role in defining
national safety standards in manufacture, acceptance checks, sales,
transportation, storage and launching of fireworks. To ensure safer and
more environmentally-friendly offerings and meet safety regulations both
at home and abroad, the company takes quality inspection very seriously.
They were looking for a solution that would maintain their product's
high quality reputation. They considered the DaqPRO to be the answer.
The independent data acquisition solution could stand alone in extreme
testing conditions and allowed for the measurement of very high
temperatures via the type T thermocouple sensor which can measure up to
400 degrees centigrade. One or more heat flux sensors are ... |

| |
SenGenuity,
the Sensors division of Vectron International, today announced its
TempTrackr™ Wireless Temperature Measurement Solution. This unique
measurement system allows for parallel interrogation of several
independent passive temperature sensors. Through use of independent
frequency bands the sensors maintain unique identification within the
system architecture. And because the sensors are SAW based they require
no power source. This solution is ideal for applications where providing
power and communication to the sensor is restricted (e.g. rotating
equipment, high temp/pressure/power environments, restricted access
locations, etc.). With unparalleled mobility, portability, robustness
and performance for real-time in-process temperature sensing
applications the TempTrackr™ provides a quick and easy-to-use solution
that facilitates providing system integrators and OEMs a platform for
customized solutions. SenGenuity’s TempTrackr™ Multi-Sensor kit includes
four (4) passive wireless temperature sensors that are capable of
reading temperatures between 0 and 120 degrees C from a maximum
interrogation distance of 70 inches. The wireless sensors are powered by
bursts of RF emitted by a wireless interrogator which excite SAW
resonators within each sensor. A feedback signal conditioned by the
temperature is then created by the resonator and fed back
electromagnetically to the wireless interrogator using the same antenna
set. “Our TempTrackr™ wireless temperature measurement solution now
provides end-customers and system integrators with real-time wireless
solutions with batteryless temperature sensors that can be individually
identified ... |

energies market |
| |
In
its latest brochure, the Klingenberg company WIKA presents itself
as a professional partner in the renewable energies market. Pressure and
temperature monitoring are valuable in all plants producing renewable
energy. WIKA illustrates this with examples of six kinds of this energy;
wind power, water power, solar thermal, photovoltaic, biogas and
geothermal. In many plants the systems used for pressure and temperature
monitoring are as reliable as they are precise; the control loops driven
with their assistance are nearly always critical for
environmentally-sound, efficient and effective power production. Apart
from high accuracy and reliability under harsh working conditions, these
power production plants also have a particular need for economical
solutions. All of these requirements can be fulfilled by WIKA
manufacturers, currently operating worldwide and on all continents. ... |

JUMO level and temperature sensor for
commercial verhicles, construction and agricultural machinery |
| |
JUMO:
To keep an engine or gears in optimum working order, numerous parameters
have to be continuously monitored, with corrective intervention should
there be any deviation. Two of these parameters are the oil level and
the oil temperature. The combined level and temperature sensor aids
vehicle diagnostics in modern commercial vehicles, construction
machinery and agricultural machinery. With this level sensor, which uses
the hot-wire principle, it is possible to determine the level of the
gear oil or engine oil in a 150 mm measurement section. Only by
monitoring the level of the liquid can we be certain that the engine is
not running with too much oil, or that, unobserved, the level has
dropped to too little. Engine damage is avoided. The level sensor is
also available with an additional temperature sensor. The temperature
sensor is designed with a Pt1000 shunt resistor conforming to EN 60751,
Class B, in a 2-wire circuit. But Pt100 and Pt500 sensors, as well as
NTC and semiconductor sensors, are also possible. The hot-wire voltage
signal and the temperature sensor resistance signal are forwarded
separately to the vehicle electronics for evaluation. The JUMO level and
temperature sensor is designed for continuous operation at a temperature ... |

New thermowells for temperature
measurement in sterile process technology |
| |
A
new type of thermowell for the process adaptation of electrical and
mechanical thermometers in sterile process technology has been developed
by WIKA for national and international markets. This development
has incorporated specific customer requests from the food, beverage and
pharmaceutical industries. The thermowell model TW22 is available both
with all standard connection variants, for example milk thread fitting
and clamp connection, and with aseptic connection to DIN 11 864 or the
specially developed welding ball. Ideally, it can be combined with the
TR22 resistance thermometer, which protects the sensor from rough
process conditions. In combination with the TR22 resistance thermometer,
the connection head plus measuring insert can be pulled out. This allows
the thermometer to be calibrated along with the entire measuring chain –
without disconnecting the electrical connections. As this also avoids
opening the process environment, the hygienic risk is drastically
minimised. ... |

Smart, Ultra-Small Infrared Thermometer
Targets Medical Needs |
| |
Melexis:
The most prominent application for infrared thermometers is measuring
body temperature to check for fever and illness. There are three main
types of IR fever thermometers: ear thermometers, forehead thermometers
and non-contact, distance-read thermometers. Measurement accuracy
depends on a) the calibration accuracy of the thermometer and b) how
accurately the temperature measured on the patient’s exterior can be
translated into an internal body temperature. For most medical
applications, a measurement accuracy of ±0.2°C or better is required.
Melexis now announces the availability of the MLX90615. This is the
world’s first intelligent infrared thermometer integrated into the ultra
small TO-46 package commonly used in the manufacture of ear
thermometers. This ultra-small and cost effective non-contact
thermometer delivers a fully calibrated digital temperature reading
achieved by integrating an infrared sensor with a custom signal
conditioning chip in a TO-46 package. The sensing element in the

leading manufacturer and supplier of temperature sensors for heat meters
in Europe. The heat meter, like other measurement devices, is used for
the billing of goods or services (here heating costs) and thus is
subject to the legally binding metrology. In order to be able to be used
in commercial operations, the measurement device previously had to have
a model authorisation. In the required authorisation test, at first the
construction of the device was tested for compliance with the legal
requirements and for the measurement stability. After the measurement
device had been produced, the correct measurement was tested in a state
run testing authority which is independent from the manufacturer. The
measurement device did not receive the calibration stamp until then. ... |
