Differential pressure measurement with
even better zero-point accuracy |
| |
The
first dynamic digital differential pressure sensor from Sensirion,
the SDP600 series, was awaited with great anticipation. This was hardly
surprising, since the advance specifications of the small, fully
calibrated sensor included outstanding long-term stability and a short
response time along with high accuracy and sensitivity, even with very
small differential pressures (less than 10 Pa). Accumulated practical
experience with the sensor and test results now show that the
performance exceeds the high standard of the advance specifications. In
particular, the range of zero-point variation is three times less than
expected. The maximum deviation from the zero point was originally
specified as 0.5 Pa, but now it has been restated as 0.2 Pa. The SPD600
series also solidly fulfils its expectations with regard to reliability
and other specifications. With this, the new sensor achieves ... |

Our technology makes the difference,
Quality improvement of monolithic and flush mounted piezo resistive
ceramic pressure sensors through increased long term stability and
moisture resistance |
| |
Metallux
AG: Through innovative measures, long term stability and moisture
resistance of pressure sensors can be increased. The new improved
generation of pressure sensors benefits on the one side from results of
modern measurements- and calculation tools as well as through marked
improvements in the screen print technology and better algorithm during
the laser trimming process. Metallux AG, a leading manufacturer of piezo
resistive pressure sensors was thus able to improve the quality of their
pressure sensors considerably. Current situation: Conventional
manufacturing process of piezo resistive ceramic pressure sensors.
Piezoresistive pressure sensors are manufactured through a screen print
process. A Wheatstone bridge is printed onto a thin membrane and burned
in at 850°C. After the firing process the offset of the bridge needs to
be compensated. For this resistors are integrated in the bridge, which
are aligned through laser trimming. These laser trimmed resistors are
however a reason for instabilities ... |

Interference-resistant pressure
transmitters |
| |
Keller
AG für Druckmesstechnik, has implemented a new concept for
temperature compensation and for protection from electromagnetic fields
(EMC) in the recently approved Series 21 Y pressure transmitters. With
measuring ranges between 2 bar and 1000 bar, the Series 21 Y
transmitters can be used at temperatures ranging from -20 °C to +100 °C
in any industrial application, even in the immediate proximity of
frequency converters. Particular attention has been paid to providing
low-cost calibration that guarantees a maximum Total Error Band of ±1.5
%FS over the entire standard temperature range of -10 °C to +80 °C.
Extensive data collection, such as that required by polynomial
correction schemes, is replaced by a much simpler, costeffective method.
The temperature range is divided into as many as 120 subdivisions, of
1.5 Kelvin each, by an integrated temperature sensor and an additional
digital circuit. The compensation values for TK zero point and TK
amplification for each of these subdivisions are calculated individually
in accordance with a mathematical model and stored in the transmitter.
These values are fed into the analogue signal path during operation
depending on the temperature, without having to reduce the 2 kHz
bandwidth. Series 21 Y transmitters are ... |

are reduced resulting in a cost-effective sensing solution. Utilizing
Kavlico’s media isolated, oil-filled, piezo-resistive (PRT) sensing
technology, the senor is capable of operation in harsh, flight critical
environments with a typical MTBF of 300,000 hours at nominal operating
temperatures. Each of the channel pressures are independent of one
another, allowing the channels to be calibrated with different pressure
outputs for each based upon the application-specific requirement of the
aircraft platform. Burst pressure is ... |

Latest transducer meets high pressure
challenges |
| |
The
latest P2V compact high pressure transducers from HBM have
excellent measuring properties at up to 5 000 bar that are needed, for
example, in water-jet cutting systems. The P2V is suitable for measuring
both static and dynamic pressures with a measurement accuracy at 0.3 per
cent at 5,000 bar and 0.2 per cent in lower range models. Dynamic
pressure characteristics can be very precisely defined because of the

New pressure transmitter P-30, Precise,
fast and compact |
| |
When
using pressure transmitters for precision measurements, users often had
to compromise depending on the priority of the requirements. The new
P-30 from WIKA now combines the three most important
characteristics of its instrument category: This product, which has been
presented for the first time at the INTERKAMA+ 2009 fair, is highly
precise, very fast and at the same time very compact. For the
development of this new pressure transmitter, WIKA looked at the
requirements of engine test bench technology in the automotive sector.
In these test benches, a quick data acquisition and analysis plays a
more and more important role in the tests for optimising the power
trains. The used measuring instruments must therefore fulfil high
demands with regard to accuracy and measuring rate. The P-30 transmitter
is characterised by a high precision with active temperature
compensation. Its fast measuring rate - up to 1 ms - allows a data
acquisition of up to 1 kHz. The new pressure transmitter works with an
accuracy of up to 0.1 % without additional temperature error in a range
of 0 ... 50 ºC. Excellent values with regard to the non-linearity of the
characteristic curve and its long-term stability can be added. WIKA has
concentrated this high measuring quality of the P-30 in very little
space. In comparison with its predecessor P-10, the size of the new
instrument has been reduced by 30%. Thanks to its compact and robust
design, the pressure transmitter can be ... |

Kavlico Designs Differential Pressure
Sensors for Turbine Inlet Filter Pressure Health Monitoring |
| |
Kavlico,
a global business unit of Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST) has
recently introduced a rugged aerospace grade differential pressure (DP)
sensor for monitoring pressure drop across a turbine engine style inlet
air filter or also known as an inlet barrier filter. The DP sensor
monitors filter health by detecting increases in pressure across the
filter element. The pressure difference increases in proportion with the
amount of filtrate captured by the filter. The DP sensor provides a
continuous measure of filter health, with a predetermined pressure
difference used to indicate critical air flow restriction by the filter.
In applications of turbine engines where the sensor indicates the air
flow has been critically restricted by a clogged filter, an inlet bypass
can be opened to maintain flow to the engine until filter maintenance
can be performed. The DP sensor incorporates a piezo-resistive sense
element and is available in pressure ranges of 0-1, ±1, ±5, and ±10 PSID,
with other option available. Other significant features include and
operating temperature range of -40 to +125ºC with a storage temperature
of -55 to +150ºC, an accuracy of ±1.5% of full scale over the operating
temperature, and an operating voltage of 5 to 15 Vdc. The lightweight
device (<6.5 ounces) is rugged by design and has a housing constructed
of an anodized aluminum with an MTBF of 300,000 hours at normal
operating temperature. The DP sensor typically provides an output of ... |

means, if the diaphragm should leak, no transmission fluid escapes into
the process. Thus the new Model PG43SA pressure gauge increases process
safety. In addition to this, its flush diaphragm construction exhibits
very good rinsing behaviour, with no deposits left on the 316L stainless
steel process connection. The entire measuring instrument can be steam-sterilised
(autoclaved) at 134°C. The compact design of the new pressure gauge,
available in nominal sizes of 40 and 63, enables space-saving

eliminates the need to be replaced on every shot, like other designs
that require thermal baffles. The ceramic coating also allows flush
mounting, thus avoiding a recessed, grease filled passage, as with
front-sealing types of pressure sensors. This flush mount feature is
ideal for ballistic and near-field air blast measurements. ICP® output
features on-board electronics to provide a conditioned output signal and
ease of use, with the ability to transmit noise-free signals over long
cable runs. Charge output versions are also available, which allows use
at higher temperatures when using a remote, in-line charge amplifier.

New High-Temperature Sensor Type 6056AU20 |
| |
Kistler:
Measurement of cylinder pressure, for example using glow plug adapters,
has made the development of economical high-torque diesel engines
possible for the first time. Sensor development has been also been
ongoing to keep pace with the higher pressures in these engines. One
sensor that meets the requirements of temperature and pressure up to 300
bar is the 6056AU20. It therefore supplements the basic Type 6056A...,
whose design catering for pressures up to 250 bar already covers many
applications. The high-temperature sensor for cylinder pressure
measurement in a glow plug adapter is now also available with a
reinforced diaphragm. The new sensor Type 6056AU20 has been added to the
existing basic Type 6056A... for use in the glow plug adapter. The new
sensor was developed especially for high pressure rise rates or very
high peak pressures. Type 6056AU20 is therefore recommended for
applications in which the pressure exceeds 200 bar and in which extreme
pressure in-creases are also to be expected. The properties and external
dimensions of the sensor are largely identical with ... |

New Melt Pressure Sensor for Higher
Precision in Measuring Nozzle Pressure |
| |
Kistler:
Melt pressure in front of the screw of injection molding machines is an
important process parameter. Machine control is critically dependent on
its precise measurement. This is because injection molding components
can only be kept within extremely tight tolerances if this pressure can
be accurately and repeatably measured and recorded over an extended
period of time. The new melt pressure sensor Type 4021A... from Kistler
is a groundbreaking new development based on the piezoresistive
principle of measurement. It measures the important machine parameter
directly in the area in front of the screw with reproducibility errors
of <0,1 %, a linearity error of <0,5 % and a zero point change of <0,5
%. The sensor with a flat seal is supplied as a complete measuring chain
with a new amplifier that also has an output for the melt temperature.
The new melt pressure measuring chain is available for measuring ranges
of 0 ... 100, 0 ... 500, 0 ... 1 000, 0 ... 2 000 and 0 ... 3 000 bar,
and can be used at temperatures of up to 350 °C. Angled or straight

Rugged Temperature and Pressure Switches
for Nuclear Power Stations |
| |
With
the series ZPN, ZDPN and ZT, Baumer offers very robust
temperature and pressure
switches developed especially for the use in nuclear
power stations. The pressure switches are suitable for pneumatic or
hydraulic control, for power generation safety equipments and for
pressurized chambers control. They are resistant to short duration
overpressure and show a good vibration resistance. The ZPN can measure a
gauge pressure from -1 bar up to 600 bar with a very small intermediate
range from -2 mbar up to 10 mbar. The ZDPN measures a differential
pressure from 2 mbar up to 120 bar. The pressure switches maintain a
constant pressure around a chosen set value. When the pressure reaches a
critical pre-set value, they trigger an alarm or safety system. A
flexible diaphragm actuates a micro-switch via a piston. The set point
adjustment is realised via a compressible spring mounted on the
opposite. Due to the force-balance principle, the dead band setting
remains constant, even with different set point adjustments. With rapid
pressure variations, an attenuator should be used to prevent a temporary
on- and off-switching. The ZT temperature switches are suitable for ... |

First pressure transmitter for mobile
hydraulic applications which fulfills new safety standards |
| |
MHS-1
is the first pressure transmitter launched on the market by WIKA
which fulfills already now the new EC Machinery Directive that will come
into effect soon. It was especially developed for safety-critical mobile
hydraulic applications. All over the world, there is a trend to increase
the safety standards for the protection of human beings and the
environment. This is also applicable for the mobile hydraulics sector.
For this reason, the new EC Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) - and
together with this directive, the safety standards EN ISO 13849-1
(Performance Level, PL) and IEC 61508 (Safety Integrity Level, SIL2) -
will become effective at the end of this year. In accordance with these
new standards, WIKA has developed a special pressure transmitter for
load monitoring, brake monitoring and drive control to be used in
commercial vehicles. Essential product features are a redundant
measurement of pressure and signal processing as well as two output
signals working independently of each other (4 … 20 mA, 2-channel) in a
single instrument. Therefore, the MHS-1 has extraordinarily space-saving
dimensions and the installation can be done in a shorter time compared
to the use of two pressure transmitters. ... |

Kavlico Air & Fuel Filter Restriction
Pressure Sensors Help Heavy Duty Truck & Bus Engines Run More
Efficiently |
| |
Kavlico,
a global business unit of Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST) has
released two pressure sensors for the heavy-duty truck and bus market
sector which assist in optimizing engine performance. Kavlico’s air
filter and oil filter restriction pressure sensors assist systems that
monitor filter life and performance. Good filter condition is important
for engines to run cleanly and efficiently. Precisely measuring and
mixing the correct amounts of air and fuel is a critical element in
modern internal combustion engines. When an air filter or fuel filter
becomes clogged the ratio of air-to-fuel can be compromised. When an air
filter becomes obstructed an engine can receive too much fuel in
proportion to air, causing the engine to run “rich”. Running rich
decreases efficiency and can release unburned hydrocarbons into the
exhaust stream as a result of incomplete combustion. The opposite is
true when a fuel filter becomes clogged. In this situation an engine can
be forced to run on too “lean” a mixture. This can decrease power and
potentially cause engine damage. To avoid these conditions, Kavlico air
and fuel filter sensors can be used to help monitor filter life and
performance. This can help engines complete the combustion process more
efficiently and cleanly. Fuel filter restriction sensors often measure
in the -10 to 0 psig range while air filter restriction sensors can
monitor even smaller pressure deltas such as -1.5 to 0 psig. ... |

Kavlico Designs Pressure Sensor for Heat
Pump Systems Meeting EU 842/2006 Directive |
| |
Kavlico,
a global business unit of Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST) has
developed a new version of the PT250 pressure transmitter designed
specifically for installation in heat pump systems. Incorporating a
piezo-resistive sense element, these extremely rugged, all-welded, 304L
stainless steel constructed devices have an integral pipe pressure
connection that is welded at the pressure source. According to EU
842/2006, heat pump applications using fluorinated greenhouse gases must
be checked for leakage at least once every 12 months or every 6 months
depending upon the gas quantity they contain. However, the directive
shall not apply to equipment with hermetically sealed systems. The PT250
from Kavlico does not utilize a gasket thereby complying with the EU
842/2006 directive. By installing a PT250 transmitter in the heat pump
system, a significant cost-savings is achieved by no longer having to
monitor leakage rates, a big plus for the end-user. Heat pumps will make
a major contribution toward Europe meeting its climate and energy
challenges for renewable heating and cooling technology, and Kavlico’s
newly designed transmitter will assist with this “GREEN”, efficient

Kavlico Provides “Green” Pressure Sensing
Options for Emissions Control |
| |
Kavlico,
a global business unit of Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST) is
currently working with transportation industry OEMs to reduce and manage
vehicle emissions. Kavlico is committed to creating a healthier
environment not only for this generation, but also for those to come.
This undertaking is being accomplished while improving overall engine
performance and efficiency without escalating operating costs. Kavlico
has been at the forefront of emission pressure sensing technology for
years. The company is continuing to develop a full line of
“green-minded” sensors for passenger vehicles using either gasoline or
diesel fuels. Newly enacted regulations require exhaust gas monitoring
and filtering in diesel engines to remove particulate Matter (PM), thus
minimizing the amount of pollutants pumped into the air people breathe.
Three common methods used to control and manage emissions are Diesel
Particulate Filter (DPF), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), and NOx
reduction systems. Kavlico sensors have lead the way in all of these
areas. In fact, Kavlico was the first to mass-produce a differential
pressure sensor for DPF applications that indicates when filters should
be “regenerated.” This is commonly a process involving incineration of
toxic exhaust particles trapped in the filter. Kavlico pressure sensor

Kavlico Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) Sensors
Are Rugged by Design |
| |
Kavlico,
a global business unit of Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST) have
designed its EOP sensors to measure pressures in gasoline or diesel
engines as well as other heavy-duty machinery. The sensors can be
designed with a ceramic capacitive or piezo-resistive (PRT) sense
element depending upon the application-specific requirement of the OEM.
Operating on 5 Vdc, the sensor provides a linear amplified analog output
proportional to pressure. These rugged devices are well-suited for
hostile, high-vibration, high-noise environments. The ceramic capacitive
versions are particularly capable of withstanding high over-pressure
situations. The sensor utilizes Kavlico’s patented ASIC electronic
integration technology for extremely reliable and accurate signal
conditioning. Flexible by design, the lightweight version of this sensor
(50 Grams or 1.76oz. Max.) can be configured with a variety of
electrical and process media connections for easy system integration.
Additionally, 316 stainless steel or brass packaging can be specified to
insure further compliance with customer requirements. The sensor

New Measuring Spark Plug Types 6115B...
and 6118B... |
| |
Kistler:
The use of spark plugs in cylinder pressure measurement has the major
advantage of avoiding the need to form an additional bore. It exploits
the means of access to the combustion chamber already provided by the
plug, which then serves a double purpose. The development of measuring
spark plugs over time has enabled the sensor to be brought favorably
close to the combustion chamber. Kistler's spark plugs have long been
renowned for their high acoustic resonant frequencies and very good
signal quality. The latest series manages to build on these advantages.
The new M12 and M14 measuring spark plug Types 6115B ... and 6118B...
offer significant advantages in handling and maintenance, in addition to
enhanced indication quality. The modular design consisting of a
demountable connection cable, replaceable sensor and ceramic body
enables efficient maintenance and repairs to be made right on the spot.
Flush-mounted installation of the measuring element enables a very high
natural frequency of acoustic oscillation. As a result, these measuring
spark plugs are suitable for application tasks on large engines, test
rigs and also in vehicles. Accuracy has also been improved as the result
of further development of sensor technology. The new measuring spark ... |
