Pressure transmitters and pressure sensors made of corrosion-proof titanium

Pressure transmitters and pressure sensors made of corrosion-proof titaniumKeller AG: In 1795, German chemist Heinrich Klaproth was so impressed by the properties of a newly discovered element that he named it titanium, after the Titans (a Greek race of deities). The best-known Titan is Atlas, who was sentenced by Zeus to carry the world on his shoulders. For some time now, Keller AG für Druckmesstechnik has offered titanium versions of its products for use in heavily corrosive media. This metal has a host of advantages for applications under very special conditions. Titanium is used as a replacement for steel in the aerospace industry, mainly for reasons of weight. In the medical devices sector, the fact that titanium is chemically and biologically neutral is especially important. This property is due to a permanent layer of oxide on the surface of the material. Thanks to its presence, components made of titanium will not corrode even in salt water or chlorinated water, unlike the high-grade steels that are normally used in the sector. This is why titanium is more frequently chosen for process measurement technology applications involving wastewater that may be contaminated with unknown corrosive substances. A titanium housing makes it possible to carry out hydrostatic level measurements effectively in brackish water, or even in iron chloride. ...

Easily integrated pressure transmitters for OEMs with digital and ratiometric interfaces

pressure transmittersKeller AG: Thanks to the Chip-in-Oil (CiO) technology developed at Keller, the trend toward miniaturization is now becoming a reality. In our Series 4 LC...9 LC pressure transmitters, the special ASIC for signal processing is fitted directly next to the pressure sensor, in the same housing, under oil, and with the exclusion of air. This yields a host of advantages in terms of application: all the key pressure measurement components are now protected against the risks from humidity and condensation. The interior wiring is implemented with short, lightweight bonding wires, while sintered-in pressure-resistant glass leadthroughs feed the transmitter signals out. Together with the high-grade steel housing, they form a Faraday cage around the measuring system, acting as feedthrough capacitors. This makes the CiO technology absolutely RFI resistant up to field strengths of 250 V/m and for frequencies of up to 4 GHz. Series 4 LC...9 LC pressure transmitters offer two output signals: a ratiometric analog voltage output and a digital inter-integrated circuit interface (I2C). The ratiometric signal eliminates the need for an expensive voltage reference in the support electronics to the A/D converter, with no additional effort and expense for compensation and calibration. For a voltage supply of 5,0 V, the output signal is specified as 0,5 ... 4,5 V. The transmitters provide constant protection against overvoltage and polarity reversal on all lines up to ±33 VDC.  ...

New measuring option displays overpressure with 100% certainty

For two pressure gauge series, WIKA has now developed a novel overload indicator. With it, unexpected overpressures in industrial processes can be documented beyond any doubt. The advantage over a pressure gauge with a drag pointer lies in the guaranteed security of the indication. The status of drag pointers can alter due to external influences such as vibration, and thus the explicit confirmation of overpressure cannot be ensured. In addition the new overload indicator is protected against any manipulation after the fact. The core of the new instrument option is a spring pin. This is fitted at the dial's scale value which the customer has defined as the highest pressure. The indicator, an aluminium pin, is carried by the instrument pointer, and if the designated maximum pressure is exceeded, it is locked permanently in the red zone. WIKA supplies the overload indicators for model 23x.50 and 212.20 bourdon tube pressure gauges in ...

There’s a name for hydrostatic level measurement: DCX Data loggers for hydrostatic level measurements

Keller AG für Druckmesstechnik offers probes to monitor groundwater levels and filling levels in tanks that can be used under a wide range of conditions. Depending on requirements, these probes provide fully autonomous operation or they can be used with an integrated data logger, wireless transmission (GSM), an ambient pressure-compensating capillary or a separate absolute pressure sensor; additional options include integrated temperature measurement, etc. Depending on the sounding tube, probe diameters of 16 mm and 18 mm up to 22 mm are available. Thanks to its diameter of only 16 mm, the DCX-16 can be used in locations where every millimeter counts (e.g. for sounding tubes with small diameters). The pressure sensor is welded into the logger housing. Type DCX-16, which is screwed in position and is fully watertight, operates as an autonomous battery-powered data collector with an absolute pressure sensor. In shallow water, a second logger (barometer) can be used for separate recording of the barometric pressure on the surface. The differential pressure and/or the filling level are then calculated in the PC by subtraction of the time-stamped measurement data from the individual loggers. Version DCX-16 SG/VG provides a cable connection, wherein barometric pressure is fed to the sensor ...

Our technology makes the difference, Quality improvement of monolithic and flush mounted piezo resistive ceramic pressure sensors through increased long term stability and moisture resistance

Metallux AG: Through innovative measures, long term stability and moisture resistance of pressure sensors can be increased. The new improved generation of pressure sensors benefits on the one side from results of modern measurements- and calculation tools as well as through marked improvements in the screen print technology and better algorithm during the laser trimming process. Metallux AG, a leading manufacturer of piezo resistive pressure sensors was thus able to improve the quality of their pressure sensors considerably. Current situation: Conventional manufacturing process of piezo resistive ceramic pressure sensors. Piezoresistive pressure sensors are manufactured through a screen print process. A Wheatstone bridge is printed onto a thin membrane and burned in at 850°C. After the firing process the offset of the bridge needs to be compensated. For this resistors are integrated in the bridge, which are aligned through laser trimming. These laser trimmed resistors are however a reason for instabilities ...

Rugged Temperature and Pressure Switches for Nuclear Power Stations

With the series ZPN, ZDPN and ZT, Baumer offers very robust temperature and pressure switches developed especially for the use in nuclear power stations. The pressure switches are suitable for pneumatic or hydraulic control, for power generation safety equipments and for pressurized chambers control. They are resistant to short duration overpressure and show a good vibration resistance. The ZPN can measure a gauge pressure from -1 bar up to 600 bar with a very small intermediate range from -2 mbar up to 10 mbar. The ZDPN measures a differential pressure from 2 mbar up to 120 bar. The pressure switches maintain a constant pressure around a chosen set value. When the pressure reaches a critical pre-set value, they trigger an alarm or safety system. A flexible diaphragm actuates a micro-switch via a piston. The set point adjustment is realised via a compressible spring mounted on the opposite. Due to the force-balance principle, the dead band setting remains constant, even with different set point adjustments. With rapid pressure variations, an attenuator should be used to prevent a temporary on- and off-switching. The ZT temperature switches are suitable for ...

Kavlico Air & Fuel Filter Restriction Pressure Sensors Help Heavy Duty Truck & Bus Engines Run More Efficiently

Kavlico, a global business unit of Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST) has released two pressure sensors for the heavy-duty truck and bus market sector which assist in optimizing engine performance. Kavlico’s air filter and oil filter restriction pressure sensors assist systems that monitor filter life and performance. Good filter condition is important for engines to run cleanly and efficiently. Precisely measuring and mixing the correct amounts of air and fuel is a critical element in modern internal combustion engines. When an air filter or fuel filter becomes clogged the ratio of air-to-fuel can be compromised. When an air filter becomes obstructed an engine can receive too much fuel in proportion to air, causing the engine to run “rich”. Running rich decreases efficiency and can release unburned hydrocarbons into the exhaust stream as a result of incomplete combustion. The opposite is true when a fuel filter becomes clogged. In this situation an engine can be forced to run on too “lean” a mixture. This can decrease power and potentially cause engine damage. To avoid these conditions, Kavlico air and fuel filter sensors can be used to help monitor filter life and performance. This can help engines complete the combustion process more efficiently and cleanly. Fuel filter restriction sensors often measure in the -10 to 0 psig range while air filter restriction sensors can monitor even smaller pressure deltas such as -1.5 to 0 psig.  ...

Model 913B02 Hydraulic Impulse Calibrator from PCB Piezotronics, Inc. provides dynamic field or laboratory calibration of piezoelectric pressure sensors. PCB® Model 913B02 is a hydraulic impulse calibrator that uses a drop mass on a piston to create half-sine pulses. The piston acts on a hydraulic fluid filled cylinder for comparison calibration of dynamic pressure sensors against a PCB® Model 136A tourmaline transfer standard. The hydraulic cylinder is fitted with the tourmaline transfer standard and has an opposing mounting port for the sensor under test (SUT). Typical performance specifications are 2-3 millisecond rise time with a pulse duration of about 5-6 milliseconds. PCB® Model 136A transfer standard is a linear volumetric tourmaline pressure sensor designed to accurately measure rapidly changing hydraulic pressures to 20,000 psi. It is structured with a single tourmaline crystal, precisely suspended between two steel supports. Since there is no diaphragm or housing to affect the linearity of the tourmaline crystal, this sensor makes an excellent calibration transfer standard for use in impulse-type ...

Kavlico Designs Differential Pressure Sensors for Turbine Inlet Filter Pressure Health Monitoring

Kavlico, a global business unit of Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST) has recently introduced a rugged aerospace grade differential pressure (DP) sensor for monitoring pressure drop across a turbine engine style inlet air filter or also known as an inlet barrier filter. The DP sensor monitors filter health by detecting increases in pressure across the filter element. The pressure difference increases in proportion with the amount of filtrate captured by the filter. The DP sensor provides a continuous measure of filter health, with a predetermined pressure difference used to indicate critical air flow restriction by the filter. In applications of turbine engines where the sensor indicates the air flow has been critically restricted by a clogged filter, an inlet bypass can be opened to maintain flow to the engine until filter maintenance can be performed. The DP sensor incorporates a piezo-resistive sense element and is available in pressure ranges of 0-1, ±1, ±5, and ±10 PSID, with other option available. Other significant features include and operating temperature range of -40 to +125ºC with a storage temperature of -55 to +150ºC, an accuracy of ±1.5% of full scale over the operating temperature, and an operating voltage of 5 to 15 Vdc. The lightweight device (<6.5 ounces) is rugged by design and has a housing constructed of an anodized aluminum with an MTBF of 300,000 hours at normal operating temperature. The DP sensor typically provides an output of ...

Compact pressure gauge with dry measuring cell for sensitive processes

The new diaphragm pressure gauge from WIKA has been designed for pressure measurement in sensitive processes such as those in sanitary applications. Unlike diaphragm seals, it uses a dry measuring cell. That means, if the diaphragm should leak, no transmission fluid escapes into the process. Thus the new Model PG43SA pressure gauge increases process safety. In addition to this, its flush diaphragm construction exhibits very good rinsing behaviour, with no deposits left on the 316L stainless steel process connection. The entire measuring instrument can be steam-sterilised (autoclaved) at 134°C. The compact design of the new pressure gauge, available in nominal sizes of 40 and 63, enables space-saving installation due to its Tri-Clamp process connection. The instrument is suitable for gaseous, liquid and viscous ...

Process Chemical Seals for High Temperatures

The process chemical seals D900 series offered by Baumer (product segment Process Instrumentation) are suitable for high temperature applications up to 400°C. They have been developed especially for the chemical and petrochemical industry in order to protect pressure transmitters against aggressive media. The devices are available with various types of ISO- and ANSI-compliant flanges. Chemical seals are used for pressure, level or flow measuring in order to protect the measuring devices against high temperatures and aggressive or dangerous media. They separate the medium from the measuring device and transfer the process pressure via a diaphragm and a filling liquid to the measuring device. The D900 series of process chemical seals are suitable for measuring the absolute, gauge or differential pressure on viscous or corrosive media at process temperatures ranges between -40°C and +400°C.The devices are designed for a pressure range from 10 mbar (gauge and differential pressure) respectively 50 mbar (absolute pressure) to a maximum of 100 bar. ...

WIKA diaphragm in-line seal with integrated temperature measurement

WIKA has enabled the clean, hygienic, dead-space free measurement of pressure and temperature, with long-term stability, with the model 983.xx diaphragm in-line seal. With its 3A approval it is equally suited to applications in the food and beverage industry as it is for biochemical, pharmaceutical or active ingredient manufacturing. Through the combination of diaphragm in-line seal and resistance thermometer, pressure and temperature can be measured at one common point in the pipeline without any restriction in its diameter. WIKA diaphragm in-line seals are directly integrated into the pipeline and, as a result of their circular cylindrical design, they are self-draining in all mounting positions. In conjunction with the pressure gauge they ensure both dead-space free as well as crevice-free pressure measurement. The temperature sensor is fixed to the inner wall of the diaphragm in-line seal, whereby fast, residue-free cleaning of the measuring point is guaranteed. By combining measurement parameters ...
