| Rotary sensors for tight installation
spaces |
| |
Confined
spaces, difficult environments and high price
sensitivity – with a combination of these
factors, angle measurement becomes a demanding
undertaking. Contelec’s launch
of its affordable Vert-X 05E introduces an
ultra-compact rotary encoder with physical
architecture that makes it suitable for use in
extremely tight spaces. Encapsulated in a
high-grade, temperature-resistant epoxy resin,
it is impervious to contamination. With IP68
protection rate and an operating temperature
range of –40°C to +125°C, it stands up to the
harshest environments. Just 5 mm high, the
extremely slim angle sensor catches the eye with
its unusually compact size and arrangement of
its measurement system only 6 mm from the edge.
This allows the Vert-X 05E to be used in
applications with a rotation centre close to a
wall and enables angle measurement in hitherto
inconceivable places. Selection of the direction
of rotation (clockwise / counter-clockwise) is
easier than ever. The Vert-X 05E can simply be
installed flipped through 180°, completely
eliminating the need to program the angle
sensor. In non-contacting magnetic rotary
encoders, the sensor unit and magnetic actuator
are physically separated, enabling transmissive
measurement in which the angle is measured
through non-magnetic materials (liquid or solid
materials). In addition, the... |

| WV36M/CAN Magnetic Absolute Multi Turn Rotary
Encoder - battery-free with CANopen interface |
| |
With
the WV36M/CAN, SIKO GmbH has expanded
their product range with a further magnetic absolute
multi turn rotary encoder with CANopen interface. The
cost-effective
rotary encoder is designed for high loads thanks to
its double ball bearings. The non-wearing magnetic
measurement principle and battery-free multi turn
technology make it perfectly suited to positioning work
in mechanically challenging environments. The WV36M/CAN
offers three modes (cyclic, polled and sync mode) with
adjustable data transfer rates (20 kBaud to 1 MBaud). In
addition, parameterisation and configuration takes place
completely via the CAN bus. Not only can the parameters
for direction of rotation, preset values and resolution
per revolution be freely adjusted, but two end switch
positions are also available. All parameters can be
saved in the rotary encoder's non-volatile memory. The
integrated absolute measurement technology allows
revolutions to be recorded reliably and precisely even
without power. The values will be available immediately
and without any loss after a power failure. The
integrated technology allows a resolution of 8192
revolutions (13 bit) and single turns with a 12 bit
resolution (4096 steps per revolution). The compact
design ... |

Safe, compact and quickly installed: Bearingless
encoders in lift engineering |
| |
The
wide selection of compact, bearingless encoders presented by the
encoder and sensor expert Baumer at this year’s
Interlift trade fair provides particularly promising solutions
for lift engineering. “Thanks to their quick and easy
installation capabilities and their compact design benefits,
these encoders are virtually predestined for lift applications“,
underlines Christof Richard, Product Manager Motion Control at
Baumer. The absolute encoder MHAD (photo) is one of the
highlights in the Baumer portfolio of rotary encoders without
integral bearings. It combines the product benefits of extremely
narrow dimensions with the functionality capabilities of an
absolute encoder. The small MAHD is easy to fit into tight spots
where installation space is confined. Thanks to its large
through-hollow shaft the encoder does not consume any space at
the shaft end but allows for installation anywhere on the motor
shaft. MHAD is a member of the HDmag encoder family which excels
with extreme robustness thanks to non-contact magnetic sensing,
absolute reliability and maximum availability. MHAD unites
high-precision absolute and incremental signals in a single
device. The current position will be output as absolute value
with 16-bit resolution, optionally via SSI or CANopen interface.
An additional incremental signal (8192 steps per turn) provides
speed feedback. The large permissible tolerances of 1 mm on
radial and axial displacement as well as air gap allow for safe
and yet so quick installation. An LED provided at the encoder
acts as ... |

| Setting features – on-site encoder-setting |
| |
Contelec
has launched a new
rotary encoder solution, which enables on-site
configuration of
angle sensors based on Vert-X MH-C2 technology after
installation. The solution, referred to as ‘setting
features’, makes it extremely easy to install rotary
encoders. Precise setting of the zero or middle points,
start and end points and the sense of rotation without
the need for any set-up aids significantly simplifies
installation and adjustment. To facilitate
parameterisation, the rotary encoders with integral
‘setting features’ have two additional digital inputs
(Set 1 and Set 2), which are used to set the sense of
rotation (CW, CCW), index points (zero point or middle
point) or start and end points as often as needed. This
process could not be easier. All that is needed for a
standard set-up procedure is to connect the two input
leads to ground in a specific sequence. The configured
parameters are saved in non-volatile memory on the
devices. Rotary encoders with integral ‘setting
features’ eliminate the need for mechanical adjustment
of the angle sensors, permitting high-precision angle
measurement in systems in which ... |

AV58M: Absolute multi-turn analogue encoder with teach-in function |
| |
|
The
new AV58M adapts to your application, instead of
you having to adapt your application to the
encoder. With this fundamental principle,
SIKO GmbH has enhanced its
product programme to include a
magnetic absolute analogue encoder with
teach-in function and is forging new paths in
the encoder industry. Using the two buttons on
the reverse and two external inputs, the AV58M
can be set to your measuring range directly in
just a few steps. You thus have the full signal
travel distance (0...10V or 4…20mA) across
precisely the measuring range that you require.
Irrespective of whether you want to measure 2,
10, or 100 revolutions, the AV58M is the best
choice for any task and thus makes storage of
encoders with different gear ratios or measuring
ranges no longer necessary. The AV58M encoder
provides the measuring range set in a resolution
of 12 bits (4096 increments) and draws on
wear-free and battery-free multi-turn technology
in the process. Thanks to its double ball
bearing, the low-cost encoder is designed for
high loads. The wear-free magnetic measuring
principle and the battery-free multi-turn
technology predestine it for positioning tasks
in mechanically challenging environments. ... |

Flexible and practice-oriented with eased retrofitting capabilities:
Measuring wheel encoder for precise acquisition of conveyor speed |
| |
|
Baumer:
As in many other applications, often it is not advisable
or simply technically not feasible to install the
encoder straight at the drive train to detect the speed
of a conveyor belt. Any slip occurring at the belt may
cause measuring errors, or equipment requires
retrofitting a speed feedback system to synchronize the
conveyor speed with the following process steps. Typical
fields of application are labelling operations in the
packaging or bottling process and observation of defined
time intervals, for example where material has to be
conveyed through a heating furnace or oven. Measuring
wheel encoders are virtually predestined to master such
tasks and they also convince in letter and parcel
sorting facilities as well as in the textile and
printing industry. The Baumer measuring wheel encoder
MA20 provides eased, flexible and dependable position
and speed feedback straight at the conveyor. The two-in
one device unites a high-resolution optical incremental
encoder and a precision measuring wheel with a suspended
arm bracket (photo). Low conveyor speeds call for high
resolutions. Thanks to the patented LowHarmonics
technology the encoder is capable of 25.000 ppr allowing
for ultra-precise measuring results ... |

AH36M: Analogue Multi Turn Absolute Encoder with Teach-In Function |
| |
|
The
new AH36M rotary encoder adapts to your application, not
vice versa. SIKO GmbH has taken a new
approach in the rotary encoder sector with this
principle and added a magnetic analogue absolute encoder
with a "teach-in function" to their product range. Two
external inputs allow the AH36M to be set to your chosen
measurement range in just a few steps. This gives you
the complete signal amplitude (0...10V or 4...20mA)
across exactly the measurement range you require.
Regardless of whether you want to measure 2, 10 or 100
revolutions, the AH36M is the best choice for every job,
making it unnecessary to stock encoders with different
gear ratios or measurement ranges. The AH36M rotary
encoder completes the selected measurement range in 12
bits (4096 steps) using non-wearing and battery-free
multi turn technology. The cost-effective rotary encoder
is built for high loads, thanks to its twin ball
bearings. The non-wearing magnetic measurement principle
and battery-free multi turn technology make it ideally
suited to positioning work in mechanically challenging
environments. Its compact construction (diameter just
36.5mm) makes the AH36M easy to use in applications with
limited space. Despite its compact construction, the new
SIKO rotary encoder has an 6mm hollow shaft. ... |

EBI 1135 Inductive Rotary Encoder with Compact Dimensions - Multiturn
encoders for robotics and automation |
| |
|
HEIDENHAIN:
In robotics and automation technology, rotary encoders and
resolvers serve on servo drives as feedback systems for position
and speed control. An increasing number of applications require
multiturn versions of absolute encoders that are low in cost and
as sturdy as resolvers, but with features beyond what resolvers
can provide. A fast digital serial interface for transmission of
a high-resolution absolute position value is used to improve
transmission reliability, in particular in environments with
high electromagnetic noise potential (e.g. on welding robots).
Now the EBI 1135 has expanded the HEIDENHAIN product spectrum of
absolute inductive rotary encoders with the EnDat 2.2 purely
serial interface. The absolute multiturn encoder attains a total
resolution of 34 bits (singleturn: 18 bits, multiturn: 16 bits).
The modular design without ball bearing and a battery-buffered
revolution counter permit very compact dimensions. With an
overall length of less than 13 mm and a housing outside diameter
of only 37 mm, it is one of the world’s smallest rotary encoders
and is therefore predestined for use on highly dynamic servo
motors with small dimensions for automation technology and
industrial robots. The new rotary encoder distinguishes itself
in particular with optimized inductive ... |

The
HEIDENHAIN
program of rotary encoders for
integration in field-bus
environments has been expanded
by new variants. The standard
rotary encoders of the ROC / ROQ
400 series with 58 mm housing
diameter are now also available
with the PROVIDE interface. The
rotary encoders with PROFIBUS
interface now support the DP-V2
encoder profile, which makes
them ready for robot control and
production technology. Complex
wiring work during integration
in a PROFIBUS system is
eliminated with the HEIDENHAIN
versions because the connection
between flange sockets is fast
and simple. This connection
technology provides a further
advantage during commissioning:
it reduces the risk of ESD
damage to the encoder. Absolute
rotary encoders with PROFIBUS
comprise singleturn and
multiturn versions. They can be
configured and parameterized
according to the requirements of
the application. Versions with
PROFINET interface are new to
the HEIDENHAIN rotary encoder
program. These encoders support
the functions of Conformance
Class 4 (full scaling and preset

Positioning with enhanced protection: New absolute stainless steel
encoder with V4 A housing |
| |
|
Baumer:
Stringent regulations in the food & beverage industry
and the ever-growing competition demand positioning
solutions quick and easy to clean. More and more
aggressive cleaning agents are used, sometimes even at
high temperatures. The utilized components must resist
these industry-specific mechanical loads. The new
optical absolute encoders GE404 are made of highly
resistive V4A stainless steel of class 1.4404 or 1.4435.
The Viton sealings provide high resistance against
chemical agents and high temperature as well as
excellent aging properties. The encoders are leak-proof
and IP 67 compliant. This results in maximum resistance
and lifetime even at regular cleaning cycles with
aggressive agents and allows for top-grade hygiene
levels with minimized cleaning time. The robust
ShaftLock bearing construction is well-proven for over
15 years and prevents machine downtime due to vibration
and high shaft loads which occur in production ... |

Ethernet interface in rotary encoders – important or technical overhead? |
| |
|
Baumer:
It really took some time until Ethernet
as well-established communication
standard in office technology finally
conquered automation. Meanwhile,
“Industrial Ethernet” has secured its
place and is much appreciated by high
performance and comfortable
functionality. Industry-oriented
Ethernet interfaces such as EtherCAT,
Profinet, PowerLink or Ethernet/IP are
gaining ground in all levels of industry
automation, from process control level
down to field and sensor level. So the
question arises: Ethernet interface - a
really practiceoriented feature or
rather technical overhead? In concrete
terms, you will get the answer when
looking at the numerous industry
applications. The decision for Ethernet
is made when deciding for an Ethernet
control. Deploying encoders which
feature another bus interface would not
make sense, all the more since there is
no cost advantage. You will come across
encoders with EtherCat, Profinet,
PowerLink or Ethernet/IP interface in
machinery for metal sheet processing,
presses and punches as well as laser
cutting equipment, in bottling plants or
in the transport and packaging industry.

Rugged – flat rotary sensors for confined installation space |
| |
|
With
its Vert-X 90E model, Contelec is
launching a flat, heavy-duty non-contacting
rotary sensor, which is particularly suitable for
mobile applications. With a height of just 12 mm,
ingress protection class IP69K and high shock and
vibration resistance, the Vert-X 90E can be used in
confined spaces in applications on construction and
forestry machinery, concrete pumps and fire service
vehicles, which make exacting demands in terms of
ruggedness, stability and environmental conditions. An
important factor is that there is no direct mechanical
linkage in the Vert-X 90E between the rotating axis and
the actual measurement system. On the non-contacting
rotary sensor, the permanent magnet is attached to the
rotating object. This ensures that it is possible to
make precise measurement – even with radial and axial
offsets of several millimetres. In addition, axially and
radially acting forces cause no wear. These features
make the rotary sensor ideal for use in cases where the
rotating object is outside a certain tolerance range or
when physical contact between the rotary sensor and
object is not possible. The Vert-X 90E rotary sensor is

AV58M – absolute analogue magnetic encoder – with signal adjustment at
the touch of a button |
| |
|
With
the AV58M SIKO GmbH has expanded its product
range by the addition of an
absolute encoder with analogue output, in
which the gear ratio is not defined in advance.
The AV58M’s resolution is 12 bit throughout the
entire measurement range. The start and end
point of the measuring range is freely
programmable. Signal adjustment is carried out
using two key buttons or external inputs.
Programming is supported by a status display
using two LEDs next to the buttons. The
calibration using two set screws that has
previously been required is therefore no longer
necessary. Due to the fact that the gear ratio
no longer needs to be defined and calibration is
supported by a "teach-in" function, the AV58M is
much more operator-friendly than previous

Defying salty air, chemicals and aggressive agents: Large selection of
robust stainless steel encoders |
| |
|
Baumer:
Sensor products deployed in harsh environments demand
specific housing and sealing techniques as protection
against the prevailing adverse conditions. Typical
application examples can be found in the chemicals
industry, offshore, in container ship loading facilities
and in bottling processes in the food and beverage
industry. The
encoders installed must withstand salty air,
aggressive media and lubricants, oils and cleaning
agents. At the trade fair SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2010 Baumer is
presenting a wide range of stainless steel encoder
designs that meet all these demanding requirements. The
all-encompassing Baumer encoder portfolio comprises
incremental and absolute encoders that come in a robust
stainless steel housing and are specifically conceived
for operation under extreme ambient conditions. The
compact encoders are available with all common housings,
as solid or hollow shaft designs and provide IP68 and

For each mechanical design and sensing principle: Encoders with modular
Ethernet interfaces |
| |
|
Baumer:
Thanks to high-grade performance merged with
ease-of-use, Ethernet provides the ideal basis for
effective data communication in industrial automation.
As a consequence, industry-standard Ethernet interfaces
are becoming increasingly important in the encoder
field. Baumer’s nearly 20 years of fieldbus encoder
expertise provides the user in drive and industry
automation with an all-encompassing encoder portfolio
supporting all industry-standard Ethernet interfaces:
EtherCAT, Profinet and Ethernet POWERLINK as well as
Ethernet/IP. Ethernet-capable absolute singleturn and
multiturn encoders are available as solid or hollow
shaft designs in every conventional configuration.
Depending on the application, the customer can select
between magnetic or optical sensing. Magnetic sensing is
the method to choose for encoder environments with dust,
dirt, moisture, shock and vibration. When it comes to
demanding high-precision requirements, optical encoders
play to their strengths. Absolute encoders can handle
speeds up to 10,000 rpm and are available with several
resolution options: Maximum 14 bits singleturn and up to
29 bits (gearless) multiturn. Multiturn encoders where
the bus cover-integrated interface electronics comes as
a separate component provide the ultimate degree of

Encoders, Cable-Pulls and Inclination Sensors: Robust Sensors for Cranes
and Heavy Vehicles |
| |
|
Baumer:
Hardly any other application demands more from a sensor
product than outdoor deployment. Operation and
functionalities must not be affected by frequent and
extreme temperature fluctuations, heavy impacts by
shocks and vibrations, moisture, splash water or dust.
Encoders, cable-pull encoders and
inclination sensors
installed at cranes or heavy vehicles in Construction,
Agriculture and Forestry for position and angle feedback
must withstand the most hostile environments. Baumer
provides an expansive product portfolio with sensor
solutions that are specifically conceived for
installation at cranes, mobile work machines and
HeavyDuty utility vehicles: Absolute multiturn encoders
that operate on a patented magnetic sensing principle
master tasks like position feedback and rotational angle
detection at crane booms. IP 67 protection ratings,
excellent temperature resistance (from -40° to +120 °C)
and optional redundant configurations ensure utmost
operational safety and reliability. Communication with
master control systems is via SSI or fieldbus interface,
for example CANopen or SAE J1939. The same hallmarks
apply to the robust and ultra-precise cable-pull
assemblies that allow for both incremental and absolute
encoder solutions and provide you with exactly the
flexibility you need. Thanks to several cable measuring
lengths up to 50 m and the high degree of linearity,
typically 0.02% of the measuring range, they provide the
requisite capabilities for dependable outrigger position

Analog absolute encoders in single- or multiturn configurations |
| |
|
Baumer: Digitalization plays a central role in
modern automation technology. Nevertheless, in many applications
there is still no better instrument than the analog encoder,
either in aspects of cost-efficiency or because it is easier in
commisioning. Angle feedback in position control loops of
presses, tilting and hoisting technology applied at machine
tools, handling robots and cut-to-length operations are some
typical application examples. Absolute single or multiturn
encoders for precise position output in form of analog signals
consitute a hands-on solution, all the more so since the
non-contact optical sensing technique they operate on is
extremely dependable and wear-free. The new analog absolute
encoders by Baumer utilize a high 14-bit resolution in their
singleturn configurations. The multiturn variants which
precisely acquire the position across several turns provide a
resolution of 16 bits. The measured values ... |

Motor Feedback Systems with Inductive Scanning from HEIDENHAIN |
| |
|
HEIDENHAIN: At this year’s SPS/IPC/DRIVES,
again in Hall 7, HEIDENHAIN is presenting new rotary encoders
with inductive scanning as feedback systems for applications in
automation technology. HEIDENHAIN has developed a new absolute
rotary encoder, the ECI 119 in singleturn resolution, for
applications in direct drive technology and for mounting on
hollow-shaft motors that up to now have been equipped, for
example, with toothed-belt solutions for driving the feedback
systems. Particularly with its dimensions—an overall height of
max. 19 mm and a housing diameter of 92 mm with at present a
passage diameter of 30 mm to 50 mm in its hollow shaft—and with
the operating temperature range of –20 °C to 115 °C, this
encoder is well positioned for use in modern machine designs.
Besides its special technical characteristics, the ECI 119 also
features significant functional reserves with regard to the
influence of contamination, shock and vibration. The high
internal 14-bit interpolation of the inductively produced
scanning signals generates a 19-bit absolute value (equals
524288 positions) in one revolution ... |

Inductive angular positioning system designed for heavy machine
construction |
| |
|
Pepperl+Fuchs: Inductive sensor systems are characterized by
their exceptional robustness and resistance to dirt, oil, grease
and humidity under difficult ambient conditions. The fact that
even large solar and wind power plants as well as marine
engineering and port systems technology can benefit from these
advantages provides an interesting insight into how the
inductive measuring system has developed. The system was
designed for measuring angular positions on rotary joints and
slewing bearings with diameters ranging from half a meter to
approximately four meters. The Position Coding System (PCI) is
an inductive angular positioning system from Pepperl+Fuchs that
is a further development of the PMI series manufactured by the
same company. Numerous coil/oscillating circuit systems
positioned closely beside one another use an intelligent
microcontroller control interface to measure the position of
metal target elements (Fig. 2) with a high degree of precision
and form the basis of both series. Current systems are only
capable of detecting one metal target object that moves along a
linear or circular trajectory depending on the sensor type. ... |

Efficient position acquisition of pitch,
yaw and slip ring: Absolute multiturn encoder ultra-immune to magnetic
fields |
| |
|
Baumer:
Encoders installed in wind turbines have to endure harsh environments,
though they must ensure absolutely dependable operation since repair and
maintenance at offshore locations are specifically difficult and
expensive. Often strong magnetic fields come into play when the encoders
are installed close to generators or magnetic brakes. The new durable
absolute encoder GXL2W easily matches the demanding requirements of wind
turbines. The non-contact optical sensing principle is wear-free and
withstands even frequent temperature fluctuations, vibrations and strong
magnetic fields. The gearless constructional concept results in a very
limited number of components what adds on an extended encoder service
life. Complementary to the SSI interface, the encoders provide
incremental signals that enable position detection and top-efficient
motorfeedback by a single encoder, for example in pitch and yaw control
of the nacelle. The encoders furthermore allow for compact slip rings
that provide more benefits. Selfdiagnosing and featuring position
continuity checks the encoder will detect ... |

Baumer:
Encoders that have to endure hostile ambient conditions must fulfill
demanding industry-specific requirements when deployed in mobile
transport systems, rail technology or container cranes. To mention only
a few: Especially protected electronics and mechanical design,
resistance against shocks, vibrations and extreme humidity and last but
not least they have to ensure dependable operation over a wide
temperature range. The Baumer Product Segment Motion Control pools
in-depth expertise and offers an extensive variety of encoder
configurations specifically conceived for harsh environments. A typical

Bearing-less hollow shaft encoder with
inner diameter of up to 740 mm: Easy attachment even to the larges
WEA-driving shaft |
| |
|
Baumer:
There is a trend towards slow speed in motors and generators. Requiring
limited gear stages, sometimes even no gearbox at all, these motors save
costs and energy. However, low speed calls for higher torque to end up
with the same yield of transmitted power. Large machines often provide
giant shafts that in the past nearly could not be matched by the
encoders available on the market. But now things are different. HDmag is
the name of the Baumer encoder series of wear-free magnetic hollow shaft
encoders featuring inner diameters of up to max. 740 mm (fig. 1).
Specifically conceived for large motor and generator shafts, they open
up new solutions. The encoders feature an encoder wheel that is attached
right away at the drive shaft and a separate sensor head. A magnetic
scale fitted on the outside of the encoder wheel is sensed tangentially.
It is covered with a bandage to provide additional protection. The
encoders are mounted straight to the hub, and thanks to the narrow axial
design and without torque support they consume only minimal installation
space on the shaft. The bearing-less design ensures wear-free operation
for years. The noncontact sensing principle of the HDmag encoders is
capable of wide radial and axial gap tolerances of up to 3 mm between
encoder wheel and sensing unit to equalize thermal and mechanical
backlash and to ... |

The dependable solution for positioning
tasks at wind turbines: Absolute encoder and resolver in a single device |
| |
|
Baumer:
There are plenty of good reasons for merging different measuring systems
and technologies in a single device: Less space consumption and reduced
installation and maintenance effort go together with a very attractive
and competitive price. The two-in-one product combines the
functionalities of an absolute encoder and a resolver. Specifically
conceived for wind turbines, it allows for precise pitch and yaw
control, reliable emergency-off and dependable motor feedback. All these
application objectives are mastered by a single device. All Wind power
stations pose demanding requirements to the sensors deployed since
reliability, safety and the aspects of cost-effectiveness are
prerequisites for fail-safe plant operation. Again, Baumer is setting
new benchmarks by the series ATD 2S MAGRES + Resolver (photo). The
robust measuring system comprising an absolute singleturn respectively
multiturn encoder and a resolver is accommodated in a well-conceived,
easy-to-mount design. The encoder provides ultra-precise,
high-resolution SSI signals (12 bit singleturn / 12 bit multiturn) that
ensure positioning with pin-point accuracy. The integrated resolver that
is galvanically insulated from the encoder electronics allows straight
evaluation of the motor feedback by the frequency converter for speed
control in the pitch and yaw system (Azimuth). The magnetic sensing

the name of the Baumer encoder series of wear-free magnetic hollow shaft
encoders featuring inner diameters of up to max.
The
encoders are mounted straight to the hub and thanks to the narrow axial
design and without torque support they consume only minimal installation
space on the shaft.

Tyco Electronics Reluctance Resolvers for
Hybrid Applications |
| |
|
Tyco
Electronics: New emission legislation and the trend towards energy
efficient transportation support an increased development in the area of
hybrid propulsion for passenger cars. One of the key applications for
improved fuel economy in the hybrid market is the recovery and storage
of energy during the braking phase or regenerative braking. When
braking, the energy of the moving car is converted and stored in the
Li-ion batteries instead of being dissipated through the heating of
braking disks. Upon acceleration of the car, the available electrical
energy is used to help the car speed up by releasing this energy into a
controlled electrical motor. More advanced systems may continuously
propel the cars’ electrical motors. In order to keep the efficiency of
the electrical hybrid motors at a maximum level, the position of the
drive shaft must be continuously monitored. Tyco Electronics has
developed a break-though inductive sensor, known as a “Reluctance
Resolver,” that can help support reduced fuel consumption with in these
new hybrid propulsion systems. The Reluctance Resolver is part of a
system to measure shaft angles. ... |

HeavyDuty technology with enhanced
monitoring system (EMS) |
| |
|
Baumer
encoders are designed for utmost reliability under most adverse
conditions, and the many decades of dependable operation in customer
applications give proof of that. However, there are some applications
where trust is not enough – regardless of most reliable technology.
Baumer has taken this aspect into account and embedded a
function-checking system in their new encoder series HOG 9.2 and HOG
10.2 (fig. 1). Identical in mechanical design to HOG 9 and HOG 10 that
have proved absolutely reliable in tens of thousands of applications,
the enhanced HOG 9.2 and HOG 10.2 feature the so-called “Enhanced
Monitoring System” (EMS). The basis is a rapid microprocessor which
continuously monitors all encoder functions over the full speed range.
Any eventual malfunction or error is quickly and reliably detected. By
an alarm output the control is informed of any error occurred. The
prevailing operating status is visualized by LED provided at the encoder
housing. But the new HeavyDuty encoders are ... |

Tyco Electronics Presents Hall Sensors
for Convertible Roof Systems |
| |
|
Tyco
Electronics: Requirements for convertible roof systems increased
dramatically over the last twenty years. The system of textile roofs has
been developed continuously and complemented by retractable hard tops
since the beginning of the nineties. The complete kinematics has high
mechanical tolerances, but the robustness of the complete system must be
provided every time. In order to provide availability and accuracy, non
contacting position sensors are being used either for on/off position
detection or angular positions detection. For a proper working
kinematics in a roof system, position sensors and angular position sensors are designed
in. Depending on the mechanical design, different types of sensors are
being used for these applications, such as on/off position detection at
kinematics, angular detections at swivel joints, and end position
detections at hydraulic cylinders. Separate cable assemblies are used
frequently which provide a simple and precise mounting in the complex
mounting process of a roof system. For over ten years, Tyco Electronics
has provided hall sensor cable assemblies ... |

Baumer
Electric: With its BMIV line, Baumer presents an encoder designed
for the harsh operation on railway vehicles. Multiple channel outputs
allow simultaneous wheelset speed information to multiple systems, also
with differing pulse rates. These include systems for slide control,
speed and slip regulation as well as those to suppress torsion
vibration. The demands made of encoders for railway vehicles are
enormous. They must remain completely unaffected by extreme
environmental influences such as dirt, oils, grease, spray water,
condensation, large temperature differences as well as high and low
temperatures. High shock and vibration loads resulting from the direct
encoder installation on unsprung pivoted bogies are a particular
challenge. All Baumer encoders for railway vehicles operate on the
proven MAGRES principle. This magnetic sensing method offers extreme
reliability and is totally resistant to all loads encountered during
railway operations. Aside from compliance with all railway standards,
the BMIV also offers SIL 2 certification. Baumer has decades of
experience in sensors intended for use with railway vehicles. Thanks to

Magnetic Rotary Encoders for HeavyDuty
Applications |
| |
|
Baumer:
In the field of drive engineering, measured value acquisition poses
increasingly difficult challenges when it comes to dynamics and
precision. These two generally conflicting requirements are difficult to
unite when using conventional rotary encoders. If, in addition, sensors
need to be robust enough to be used in the toughest operating
environments, new solutions and approaches are required. For
applications like these, Baumer Hübner, a German-based company
specializing in rotary encoders, produces robust, specially engineered
encoders, that use a magnetic sensing method, combined with complex
interpolation and evaluation electronics. These enable position, speed
and other variables like acceleration to be measured synchronously, and
deliver both high-dynamic and high-resolution readings. The encoder
rotor can be supplied with a diameter of up 800 mm and can be
screw-mounted straight onto a drive shaft or attached with a clamping
ring or clamping fixture. Encoder rotor and dedicated sensing head are
of short axial length and can be adapted easily to existing fittings.
Thanks to the interpolation electronics, measured value acquisition can

4B Rotech Encoder |
| |
|
The
4B Rotech Encoder is used primarily for protecting equipment and
personnel from dangerous underspeed / belt slip conditions. Other
applications include accurate speed control, direction of rotation
detection, gate position indication and counting the number of
revolutions of the shaft. An inductive sensing device in the body of the
encoder detects a steel rotor. On slow speed or accurate position
control, a photo diode detects the slots on a steel disk. One pulse is
created for each rotor or slot so the unit can be connected directly to
a PLC/computer or 4B control module. The shaft to be monitored is
drilled and taped to take the M12 Rotech Bolt. No guards are required as
the rotating components are encased inside the aluminium housing of the
encoder. No brackets are required as the encoder couples directly to the
end of the shaft and floats with the shaft. Polyester and stainless
steel versions are also available for offshore and other highly
corrosive applications." ... |

Hall effect position sensor gives maximum
performance in extreme environments |
| |
|
Penny
+ Giles has launched an upgrade to its popular SRH280 contactless
rotary position sensor. The new SRH280P incorporates a factory
programmable Hall effect rotary sensor to provide reliable and accurate
rotary measurement in extreme motorsport environments, such as steering
position monitoring, throttle position sensing and suspension feedback.
The sensor is also highly suited to a wide range of other industrial
applications. Unlike potentiometer sensors, the SRH280P can operate in
high dither vibration conditions with no deterioration of the sensing
element due to the non-contacting operating principle. As a result it
offers maximum performance in a variety of high duty cycle applications
on racing vehicles, including single-seat cars, sports cars, touring
cars and motorcycles. With no electrical sliding contacts SRH280P offers
an almost limitless sensor life. SRH280P operates from either a 5Vdc
regulated or 9-30Vdc unregulated power supply and for ease of
configuration, is available with analogue (0.5 to 4.5Vdc) or digital
(Pulse Width Modulated) signal output. The sensor is factory
programmable, allowing ... |

New generation rugged and configurable
dual output rotary position sensor |
| |
|
Penny
+ Giles, designer and manufacturer of high precision position
sensors, has launched its most configurable rotary sensor, the SRH500P.
The factory programmable sensor, for use in extreme environments, gives
OEMs a wide selection of parameters so the sensor can be configured to
suit their individual needs. Based on non-contact Hall effect technology
it can operate in high dither vibration conditions with no deterioration
of the sensing element. It is resistant to shock and vibration which
makes it ideal for many position monitoring applications on off-highway
vehicles. These include steering position, suspension position and lift
system position on municipal, agricultural and construction vehicles.
The sensor operates from either a 5Vdc regulated or 9-30Vdc unregulated
power supply and can be supplied programmed with any one of 341
different angles from 20 degrees up to 360 degrees in one degree
increments. It has a 12 bit resolution (0.025%) over the selected
measuring range and for ease of configuration is it available with
single or dual redundant analog (0.5 to 4.5Vdc) ... |
