| Seeing the Invisible Now Possible |
| |
| PreSens Precision Sensing GmbH: 2D
sensing of oxygen-, pH- and CO2-distributions: at the
BIOTECHNICA 2010 in Hanover from October 5 – 7, 2010,
PreSens presented its new Imaging Solutions for the
first time. The new image processing devices combine
digital imaging technology with optical sensor
technology to record the sensor response of a planar
sensor foil which covers the surface of a sample, e. g.
animal or plant tissue, cell suspensions or sediments.
The optical sensor foil translates the respective
analyte content into a light signal which is recorded
pixel by pixel using a digital camera. Heterogeneous
samples can now easily be evaluated with respect to
reliable addressing regions with high or low analyte
content because one single image contains the
information of an array of single point sensors. “With
this method we will be able to visualize pH dynamics in
the rhizosphere of plants two dimensionally.”, says Dirk
Gansert, Göttingen Centre for Biodiversity & Ecology.
“And as we can measure non-invasively, our sample can be
analyzed without irritation or destruction ... |

New thermo-paramagnetic oxygen
transmitter for harsh industrial applications |
| |
Michell
Instruments: The new XTP600 oxygen transmitter from Michell is a
robust self-contained oxygen transmitter that makes oxygen measurement
in the process industry as simple as a field pressure or temperature
measurement. While traditional paramagnetic oxygen analysers suffer from
drift, Michell’s latest thermo paramagnetic technology makes this
transmitter almost drift-free. The XTP600 measures oxygen content
between 0.01 and 100% using the latest developments in non-depleting
thermo-paramagnetic technology. With no moving parts, the transmitter
can be sited directly in harsh industrial environments without any risk
of interference from vibration. The extremely compact size and simple
design of the XTP600 makes it ideal for installation next to the
measurement point with no additional cost for extensive piping or
frequent maintenance and calibration. Hydrogen applications are known to
cause significant sensor drift in traditional oxygen analysers. With the
latest thermo-paramagnetic technology the sensor element of the XTP600
is extremely stable even in ... |

| Latest gas analyzer for
monitoring cell growth processes |
| |
The
German company BlueSens
presents the new BlueInOne Cell gas analyzer.
The new analyzer for carbon dioxide and oxygen
has been specially designed for monitoring cell
growth processes in biotechnology. The device
can be installed directly in the exhaust flow of
the bioprocess and measures the concentration of
CO2 and O2 there in real-time. The BlueInOne
Cell automatically compensates any fluctuations
of pressure and humidity in the system. The
readings are therefore extremely reliable even
under fluctuating measuring conditions. “The new
BlueInOne Cell is a cost-effective, extremely
uncomplicated, reliable and accurate in situ gas
analysis for cell growth processes,” explains
Dr. Holger Müller, one of the managing directors
of BlueSens. The new oxygen sensor element in
the analyzer is now able to record all oxygen
concentrations reliably from 0 % to 100 %
volume. Anaerobic processes can also be
monitored with the new analyzer. “In the
development stage, we particularly focused on
long-term stability and high resolution,”
emphasizes Dr. Müller. The BlueInOne Cell has a
correspondingly extremely high resolution of 50
ppm and could be used as a replacement for
cost-intensive mass spectrometers which are
frequently used. ... |

| New gas sensor for bioprocesses |
| |
A
new compact gas analyzer for bioprocesses is introduced
by the German manufacturer BlueSens.
The new in-situ sensor offers the parallel online
monitoring of O2 and CO2 for the analysis of
fermentations – with just one space-saving sensor. It
can be used for fermenters of every size, from the lab
to industrial scale. The BlueInOne Ferm also measures
the pressure and humidity in the off gas of the
bioprocess. Therefore the BlueInOne Ferm is neither
affected by the gas flow nor by humidity and stands for
highest reliability. Wherever you might have needed a
series of sensors or bulky gas analyzers in the past,
you now can install just one sensor. The reasonable
price also allows the installation of redundant systems.
With this analyzer it is now possible to measure
PAT-conform directly in the process and in real time.
Because of that the process parameters can be optimized
and controlled. BlueInOne Ferm stands for gas analysis
of the latest generation. Due to the compact top-quality
stainless-steel housing (IP65) the BlueInOne is very
easy to install and fits to any hose, pipe and tube. The
status of the analyzer is now displayed by two luminous
pushbuttons. ... |

Fail-safe oxygen measuring system
increases the efficiency of pellet heaters |
| |
Increasing
numbers of households are now turning to wood or pellet heaters for
their central heating systems. Using the fail-safe MF010-O-LC oxygen
measuring system from J. Dittrich Elektronic it is possible to
determine the residual oxygen content in furnace exhaust gas. With the
help of a controller, the excess air necessary for reasons of safety can
be minimized and combustion optimized, thereby increasing efficiency.
Emission values in the exhaust gas fall. In addition, it is possible to
compensate for fluctuations in the calorific value of the fuel or in the
fuel supply. Contrary to a lambda probe which measures the relative
oxygen content, the extremely robust oxygen measuring system determines
the absolute content, i.e. the oxygen partial pressure in the exhaust
gas. For this reason, fluctuations in air pressure, humidity and
temperature have no influence on the accuracy of the measurement. ... |

Exact measurement of residual oxygen content in furnace exhaust gas |
| |
|
The
MF010-O-LC dynamic oxygen measuring system from J. Dittrich
Elektronic is the fail-safe way to determine the residual oxygen
content in furnace exhaust gas. With the help of a coupled controller
the excess air specified for reasons of safety can be minimised and
combustion in the furnace optimised, thereby increasing efficiency. In
this way it is possible to compensate for fluctuations in the quality of
fuels for modern wood firing. Contrary to a lambda probe which measures
the relative oxygen content, the extremely robust oxygen measuring
system determines the absolute content, i.e. the oxygen partial pressure
in the exhaust gas. For this reason, fluctuations in air pressure,
humidity and temperature have no influence on the accuracy of the
measurement. The system is calibrated electrically, without reference
gas and without additional personnel, in atmospheric air at the end of
the furnace’s ventilation phase, thereby reducing maintenance work. This
is made possible by a dynamic zirconium dioxide sensor ... |

Thermo-paramagnetic oxygen transmitter works without drift in hydrogen
applications |
| |
|
Michell
Instruments: Hydrogen applications are known to cause significant
sensor drift in traditional oxygen analysers. The measurements in such
environments are not only false but also limited to certain hydrogen
concentrations. With the latest thermo-paramagnetic technology from
Michell applied to the sensor element of the new XTP600 oxygen
transmitter, these limitations are lifted. The special design of the
measurement cell eliminates transmitter drift and deterioration by
preventing the hydrogen molecules from diffusing into the sensor. The
new XTP600 oxygen transmitter from Michell was developed as a robust
self-contained oxygen transmitter for applications in various areas of
the process industry. The XTP600 transmitter measures oxygen content
between 0.01 and 100% utilising the latest developments in the
non-depleting thermo-paramagnetic technology. With no moving parts and
explosion proof housing, the transmitter can be directly used in harsh
industrial environments as well as hazardous areas. In applications
where fast response speed and high accuracy are essential for safety,
the XTP600 oxygen transmitter is ideal. ... |

Michell Instruments helps preserve
‘iconic’ artwork |
| |
|
Michell
Instruments has loaned two instruments to the National Needlework
Archive (NNA) to help preserve an iconic mural. Designed by Constance
Howard for the Festival of Britain in 1951 ‘The Country Wife’ is
considered to be one of the 20th Century’s most important textile works.
However, after nearly 60 years, the mural is in urgent need of
restoration work to ensure its survival. Part of the preservation
process involves storing the work in an anoxia bubble where levels of
oxygen are maintained at 1% with a relative humidity of less than 50% at
23°C. In order to monitor this environment, the NNA is using two of
Michell’s instruments: an XTP600 Oxygen Transmitter and a DM509 RH
handheld device. The XTP600 uses the highly stable thermo-paramagnetic
sensing technology to measure levels of oxygen in gases. With its high
reliability and low maintenance requirements it is ideal for
applications such as this where an instrument is needed to monitor
conditions over a long period of time. The DM509 is a versatile
hand-held relative humidity and temperature transmitter. ... |
