Precise optoelectronic sensor for presence check of bottle labels in filling machines

optoelectronic sensorSTM Sensor Technologie München GmbH: In many bottle filling plants no cost-efficient and at the same time reliable solution for the detection of labels on drinking bottles is available. A missing label means a problem: The label is needed by the consumer to redeem the deposit or for indication of the best-before date. STM now offers a reliable solution with its sensor RLV3012. The sensor uses the different reflectance of bottles (glass or PET) compared to labels in addition to geometric background suppression. It is constructed in a way that an unlabeled bottle does not yield a signal but only the label itself. This reflective beam sensor can be used with a huge variety of labels and beverages – no matter if it is mineral water or practically nontransparent liquids like various fruit juices. ...

New optical linear array from Melexis turns the spotlight to real-time fuel quality sensing

optical linear array from Melexis for fuel quality sensingMelexis: Near IinfraRed (NIR) spectroscopy using the company’s 3rd generation of Optical Linear Array, the MLX75306 enables real-time fuel quality sensing for engine management. Working with petrochemical and other researchers, the company has decoded the optical fingerprint of different types of fuel available in the market. A cost effective and robust spectrum analyzer is realized with LED light, optical filters and the MLX75306. Measurement of fuel type, mixtures and contaminants provides engine control systems an important new input for optimizing efficiency and emissions. Refined fuel quality analysis capabilities are useful for several reasons. At present, automotive OEMs supply different specification engines to different continents because of variances in fuel quality. Direct molecular fuel analysis offers vehicle manufacturers the ability to develop a single, real-time programmable engine that is suitable for all regions, as opposed to the current situation whereby engines are developed per fuel region. More accurate fuel analysis techniques can also be used to respond to new and emerging fuel types like Flex Fuel. As fuel price rises globally, fuel adulteration practices have become common in some countries, providing additional justification for technologies that can identify the compounds and concentration of certain additives and, if necessary, alert the driver. Increasingly tight emissions regulations also support the provision of better information about a fuel’s intrinsic quality as it can be used to help the engine run in an optimal and therefore more emissions-friendly way. ...

The future of photoelectric sensors lies in direct distance measurement

Bei der Pulse Ranging Technology (PRT) wird die Laufzeit eines energiereichen Laserpulses zur Entfernungsmessung bestimmtPepperl+Fuchs: Photoelectric sensors have always had the capability of measuring the intensity of incidental light with light-sensitive components (photodiodes or phototransistors). This principle is as simple as it is effective and is ideal for the design of photoelectric sensors. However, it is always difficult if the reflection characteristics of the object to be detected change the light incidence at the diode. In principle, a thru-beam sensor detects any object, but a reflector that moves unintentionally into the beam of a retro-reflective sensor remains undetected as an object. This physical characteristic is particularly disruptive for optical sensors that measure directly to the object. Different colored objects reflect different amounts of light back to the receiver and all optical sensors have something called a black/white difference, i.e. different switching points for different objects. This applies to energetic sensors in particular, but background suppressors ...

Detection of micro-bubbles in thin hoses and tubes

STM Sensor Technologie München GmbH: Reliably detecting microscopically small gas bubbles in clear liquids is inherently difficult, just due to the size of the objects. Moreover, during optical procedures it is difficult to obtain uniform illumination of the liquid column and thus uniform sensitivity over the entire diameter, due to the refraction of the light in the curved hose walls. STM has developed a reliable solution for this: Several micro-optical sensors simultaneously illuminate the liquid in different directions. With their movement through the measurement range, the light is diffracted or scattered at the micro-bubbles due to their approximately spherical shape. The signals received from the individual sensors are analysed with regard to their dynamic components in the evaluation electronic unit. Each pass, even of tiny bubbles, gives signal peaks that can be reliably detected. ...

Sensors for the food industry, The challenge of perfection

Pepperl+Fuchs now manufactures sensors for the food industry that more than satisfy the demanding requirements for cleanliness and hygiene in this sector – in three different technologies. Ultrasonic, inductive and optical sensors. All machines that process food have areas that pose different levels of contamination risk: the product-contact area, the splash area and the product-free area. Pepperl+Fuchs has categorized these areas into zones and assigned sensor properties to each zone. Zone A, B and C. Zone A requires the highest standards of hygiene and so Pepperl+Fuchs has developed the UMC3000 ultrasonic sensor, which is the first proximity sensor that can detect objects directly. The UMC3000 is manufactured entirely from FDA approved materials and designed according to EHEDG guidelines. IP69K protection for extreme thermal shocks is essential in harsh applications. The MLE76 optical sensor is chemically resistant to cleaning agents and offers IP69K protection in spite of the tough ambient conditions in the food industry. The gap-free enclosure and extremely smooth stainless steel surface satisfy cleanliness requirements outlined in EHEDG guidelines. Inductive sensors available in ...

SmartReflect – As reliable as a light barrier, as straightforward as a diffuse sensor

Baumer launches photoelectric sensors with the new SmartReflect technology for absolutely reliable object detection. These light barriers recognize objects of any kind and do not require a separate reflector or receiver. The surest type of object detection in the area of photoelectric sensors is the physical interruption of the closed beam of light from a light barrier by an object. In SmartReflect sensors from Baumer, the closed beam of light is formed between the sensor and a part of the machine, for example. Separate reflectors or receivers are unnecessary. The only prerequisite is that a defined background, which can serve as a reference point, be present within the sensing distance of the sensor. Color and material of background and objects are irrelevant for the detection. For different applications with different space requirements the user can select from various sensor configurations. The portfolio ranges from subminiature sensors for automated handling to sensors in hygienic design for the food and beverage industry. These are optimized to stainless steel as the reference and achieve a long range of 800 mm. All SmartReflect sensors excel with a comfortable teach-in and an adjustment mode ...

Baumer: Thanks to their speed and repeat accuracy, the new photoelectric contrast sensors FKDK 14 are the ideal, economical solution for print mark detection in packaging machines and graphics industry. The new contrast sensor FKDK 14 for print mark detection is specifically optimized for high throughput speed. Its short response time only amounts 50 μs. Thus, short throughput times can be realized. At the same time, the contrast sensor is very compact and can be integrated easily into the machine. The teach-in procedure is intuitive and can also be conducted dynamically during process. Since the light source is white light, the contrast sensor can reliably detect print marks of all colors, even with slight contrast to the background. The switching status is indicated with an LED, which is clearly visible through the transparent housing base of the contrast scanner. The contrast scanner complements the photoelectric sensor Series 14 perfectly. Together with the existing light barriers, light scanners etc., the print mark sensor is ideally suited for applications in packaging machines and provides the economical solution for print mark detection. ...

The resulting compact design of these sensors enables them to be easily integrated even where space is at a premium. Furthermore, all adjustments during start-up, production or in the event of service can now be made via IO-Link. For example, sensor calibration is no longer necessary after a change of format in a packaging system. All the necessary process parameters for up to thirty formats are stored in the sensor and can be switched over within a few milliseconds via IO-Link. A wide range of diagnostic functions can also be called up via IO-Link. ...

Seeing the Invisible Now Possible

PreSens Precision Sensing GmbH: 2D sensing of oxygen-, pH- and CO2-distributions: at the BIOTECHNICA 2010 in Hanover, PreSens presented its new Imaging Solutions for the first time. The new image processing devices combine digital imaging technology with optical sensor technology to record the sensor response of a planar sensor foil which covers the surface of a sample, e. g. animal or plant tissue, cell suspensions or sediments. The optical sensor foil translates the respective analyte content into a light signal which is recorded pixel by pixel using a digital camera. Heterogeneous samples can now easily be evaluated with respect to reliable addressing regions with high or low analyte content because one single image contains the information of an array of single point sensors. “With this method we will be able to visualize pH dynamics in the rhizosphere of plants two dimensionally.”, says Dirk Gansert, Göttingen Centre for Biodiversity & Ecology. “And as we can measure non-invasively, our sample can be analyzed without irritation or destruction ...

Lightband fork sensors

STM Sensor Technologie München GmbH: With the new BS type of fork sensors STM has extended their MICROmote® family of opto sensors to include another group of products with outstanding technical characteristics. These fork sensors generate up to a 30mm wide light band of high uniformity. The separate amplifier electronics are connected to the sensor via a highly flexible lightweight cable with an M8 connector. Due to the extraordinarily compact yet robust design the sensor has only the minimum volume which inevitably produces optimal optical function. This saves installation space and weight. Nevertheless the separate amplifier employs operational controls of reasonable size and an easy to read display. Standard gap widths of the u-shaped sensor housings are 40mm or 80mm. Depending on the chosen amplifier a wide range of applications are possible. Amplifier variations range from switching models for simple On/Off detections (e.g. optical limit switch function) to analog amplifiers for high-precision web edge controls. Additional functionality can be achieved by using dynamic electronics to operate as an optical window for counting applications or for inline quality control ...

They dispose of highly efficient micro optics in the sensor head which is able to focus the light with exceptional accuracy. By means of very special point source LEDs they are able to generate laser like light spots. They combine very small sizes with extraordinary high optical output power. MICROmote® stands for minimum volume, minimum weight and optimum installation. They may perhaps look like fiber optics but limitations like minimum bending radii or flexing restrictions from dynamic workloads don’t exist. Other than with fiber optics an electrical signal is generated directly in the sensor head and conducted through a highly flexible and at the same time chemically resistant cable to the amplifier electronics. They may be operated together with one of the different STM MICROmote® amplifiers as well as ...

Baumer expands its portfolio of IO-Link sensors

Baumer: Nowadays, users look for an increasingly simple operation of their machines. Additionally, requests for a maximized machine performance and minimized down time are made. Baumer meets these customer requirements with expanding ist existing portfolio of IO-Link sensors. Already in 2007, Baumer fittet their first sensor with the communications standard IO-Link, the smallest photoelectric sensor with background suppression FHDK 04. Next to the red light distance sensor FADK 14 a communication between sensor and control via IO-Link is also possible in the new Series 09 ultrasonic sensor since the beginning of this year. Thanks to the bi-directional communication between control and sensor/actuator, parameterization is facilitated considerably and can be effected during the process. Additionally, it is possible to avoid machine down time due to error diagnosis or early detection. Remote parameterization and diagnostics via online communication are realistic for the future. Thus, Baumer pushes the establishment of IO-Link and develops additional IO-Link products in all sensor technologies. E.g. the inductive sensor IWRM 12 will soon be available with the communications standard ...

Reliably detecting water – with MICROmote® optical sensors from STM

STM Sensor Technologie München GmbH: Clear liquids such as water cannot be detected by optical means in transparent pipes or containers without further ado. It gets especially difficult if the pipe diameter is very small or if the containers are only semi-transparent. When using optical sensors for detection of water levels, the effects of light transmission and refraction in water can interfere with one another to such an extent that measurements are actually reversed, especially in the interaction with the container walls. To solve this problem, the through beam sensors of the MICROmote® “JJ” series were developed by STM. The transmitters work in the upper infrared range. In the absorption spectrum of water there is at this point a maximum and the light of this wavelength is absorbed by the individual molecules. Water thus becomes “non-transparent” for the optical system and detection is drastically simplified. Depending on the size of the sensor or the effective diameter of the beam, level detection can be attained with particular precision. ...

Optical Measurement of gear teeth

Profile scanners (model scanCONTROL 2800-25) from Ortenburg-based sensor specialist Micro-Epsilon are able to generate digital 3D images of gear teeth and so can be used to measure the run-out characteristics of gear shafts with plug-in toothing, bevel gears with hypoid toothing and similar axial components. As gear wheels can warp during manufacture, the run-out requires inspection. The extent of the “ovality” and the direction in which it should be adjusted must be determined for any adjustment of the workpiece. Special measuring instruments use high-precision laser scanners that enable automatic adjustment of the workpiece, quickly and precisely. The scanCONTROL 2800-25 laser line scanner with a 25mm measuring range digitises the 3D structure of the tooth area and so is used for these types of application. The scanners achieve a measuring rate of up to 256,000 points per second. The sensor can be configured quickly and easily using the new Configuration Tools software. ...

Miniature series with high ranges

Leuze electronic: Measuring just 23. 1 x 12 x 8 mm, all device versions of the 2 Series are considerably smaller than a matchbox. At the same time, these throughbeam photoelectric sensors, retro-reflective photoelectric sensors and diffuse reflection light scanners convince with ranges of up to 2 m. With their small, homogenous and highly visible light spot generated by a pin-point LED, the sensors are ideal for the detection of small parts. These tiny devices are unbeatable when the designer is confronted with highly constrained spaces yet needs a highly flexible solution in addition to good performance (pnp/npn switching output, light/dark switching). Secure and simple mounting of the sensors with standard workshop M3 screws further increases their appeal. The housing, molded with thermoelastic elastomer, guarantees permanent protection against environmental influences ...

Photoelectric sensors with IO-Link – Sensor intelligence cleverly applied

Baumer extends its portfolio of measuring sensors compatible with IO-Link. The measuring red light distance sensor FADK 14 now offers several new features that improve the reliablity of your process. Thanks to IO-Link, the condition of the received signal can be retrieved from the sensor in different quality levels. This information can be used as a pre-failure warning. Consequently, photoelectric sensors can solve measurement tasks even in dusty environments, such as wood processing. Additionally, IO-Link enables quick and error-free realignment of the sensing range according to the product in process. The corresponding limits are saved in the control, thus any errors during product changes are eliminated. The average value that can be optionally activated enables a higher resolution and a more stable signal quality especially with a rough object surface. As a result, IO-Link generates a real added value when applied with photelectric sensors and these ensure an improved process reliability as well as ...

Retro-reflective sensor – Has an eye for transparent objects

Baumer introduces its new and improved retro-reflective sensor FRDK 14 for transparent objects. Thanks to the new housing concept, the photoelectric sensor can be adjusted easily and quickly via a teach-in button. The high sensitivity of this retro-reflective sensor allows for it to detect glass, transparent packaging or PET bottles safely. Due to the short response time of only 0.1 ms, edges of moving, transparent foils can be positioned exactly. At the same time, it is irrelevant whether the object is directly in front of the sensor or closer to the reflector. The short adaptation time of only 20 ms permits the sensor to be taught subsequently or to be adjusted to changing tasks via an external teach-in connection while the process is running. In addition to the red light sensor there is also a laser version available. This sensor is particularly suitable for ...

Optical distance sensors with maximal resolution

With the optical distance sensors ODSL 9, Leuze electronic has extended its family of optical distance sensors and set new benchmarks for speed, precision, compact design and comfortable operation. The devices feature high precision up to 0.01 mm and short measurement times. The new optical laser distance sensors ODSL 9 are designed to be used in precision applications of mechanical engineering and work according to the triangulation principle. Like Leuze electronic's other optical distance sensors, they stand out with high ranges relative to resolution. The devices are available in two types, one with a resolution of 0.1 mm and a measurement range of 50 to 450 mm, and the other with a resolution of 0.01 mm and a measurement range of 50 to 100 mm. Their speed is stunning with a measurement acquisition rate of 500 Hz independent of measurement distance and object characteristics. This turns the new ODSL 9's into the ideal solution, in particular for moving applications. The speed can also be used for filtering measurement values and for preprocessing via statistical functions, allowing even more precise measurements to be generated. The devices operate largely independent of object characteristics and are nearly insensitive to gloss and structures. The temperature stability in effect also contributes to precision. The compact structure of the ODSL 9's in relation to their performance is a first for optical distance sensors ...

Photoelectric Sensors - Level measurement on standpipes

Baumer Electric: User-friendly level measurement? Baumer’s new level sensors are convincingly easy to handle. They can be mounted without difficulty on a standpipe or a tube using the included cable tie. The diameter of the (half) transparent standpipe on which the sensor can be mounted can vary from 3 to 13 mm. Once they have been secured, no further adjustments have to be made on the FFDK 16 as all required circuitry is built in. However, a switch for dark or light switching (D/L) is in place. In the optical fiber version, the fibers are arranged in rows. This allows the sensor to suppress foam or air bubbles of up to 3 mm in size. Foam especially emerges often, and so far it has led to many measurement errors with optical level measurement systems. Thanks to the PFI material used, the sensor is also resistant to chemicals. Another advantage of the optical fiber version ...

Novel frame adapter, mounting sensors with a double click

Baumer introduces a new clever accessory for its Series 14 photoelectric sensors: a novel frame adapter. This plastic adapter allows for a simple installation of the sensors without the use of screws or tools. They are mounted with just two clicks – quickly and efficiently. In many applications several photoelectric sensors are employed along a conveyer belt. In these cases it is time-consuming to screw and adjust every single sensor. Additionally, special mounting angles are often necessary. Now a recess in the steel sheet of 1.75 x 5.4 cm is sufficient to install a Series 14 sensor with the frame adapter. The sensor only has to be snapped into the adapter and together this unit is inserted into the cut-out. Two plastic clamps secure the adapter in the cut-out and the sensor is mounted tightly and securely. This installation saves the user time and he can forego additional, often expensive mounting angles. Likewise, the sensor cannot be re-adjusted or shifted accidentally. Nevertheless, when the sensor needs to be serviced it can be dismounted quickly. The unique frame adapter fits all Series 14 sensors from Baumer, such as diffuse sensors with background suppression, retro-reflective sensors, or the new LED-based distance sensors ...

Automatic geometry inspection of silicon ingots

Micro-Epsilon has launched a brand new system for the geometrical inspection of ingots called “dimensionCONTROL 8260 for Ingots”. In just a few minutes, the system can inspect the surface of the ingots using several laser optical sensors (line scanners), which automatically measure the side lengths, phase lengths, angles, diagonal lengths and planarity of the side areas. The automatic measuring system compares target data with actual measured values and then classifies the ingot accordingly. The system calibrates itself automatically to the common ingot sizes of 125mm x 125mm, 156mm x 156mm and 210mm x 210mm. Ingot lengths of up to 2,500mm can be measured. Calibration of each respective ingot is carried out by using integrated master parts or components. The identification of any ingot defects is performed either automatically with a marking unit or manually. The weight of the ingot also plays a key role in determining the production yield. Therefore, the system can also be supplied with an integrated load cell. The sensor system and base plate traverse along the test item during the measurement process. ...

Leakage sensors - Wet feet? No, thanks!

Baumer Electric: Imagine the tank containing liquid chemicals starts leaking and nobody notices! Thanks to a new optical sensor for leak monitoring from Baumer, this will only remain in your imagination. The FODK 23 is screwed or glued onto a floor panel next to the facility that is to be monitored. Typically, only 1ml of liquid on the floor is sufficient for the sensor to react. Therefore, the leak is detected at an early stage, which prevents more severe damage. The small, round housing of the FODK 23 with integrated evaluation electronics consists entirely of a chemically resistant Teflon PFA sheath. As a result, the sensor is particularly suitable for applications involving discriminating materials. The clever installation clip made from PRA or PVC allows the sensor to be mounted and dismounted quickly without using any tools. Under normal circumstances the integrated fail-safe strategy provides an active output. In case of a cable break or another failure, this output changes its state, which can then be evaluated ...

Video Instructions for Popular Label Sensor

The very popular LRD6110 label sensor from Lion Precision now offers video setup instructions. Unlike photo-eyes (optical sensors), the LRD6110 does not use changes in contrast for operation. The sensor works equally well with standard labels and clear-on-clear labels without the need for “eye-marks.” The setup procedure is slightly different than a photo-eye. To aid customers in getting the highest performance and quickest setup time, Lion Precision now offers a Video TechNote on their web site providing a clear explanation of the concepts and techniques used in adjusting the sensor. “While the sensor is quiet easy to setup thanks to the light bar display, nothing makes instructions clearer than video,” according Mark Kretschmar, communication manager for the company. Other video TechNotes are available. More setup videos are planned for other sensors. Lion Precision manufactures the world’s leading clear-label sensors with nearly 40,000 installed around the world. The company’s primary product line is capacitive and eddy-current noncontact sensors. This technology was adapted for label sensors in 1995 when no other technology could detect clear labels. ...

Novel edge control with ultrasonic fork sensor

SNT Sensortechnik AG: Edges of running webs and belts get laterally misaligned after a short time without permanent external control. Typical applications are found for example in the manufacture and processing of foils, paper, tin or textiles, but also for drive belts. Previously, mechanical or optical sensors have been used to determine the lateral position of the edge in order to continuously adjust mechanically. These are often too slow or too sensitive to dirt and dust. Moreover, optical sensors cannot reliably detect edges of transparent or partially transparent material. Especially modern packaging and labeling foils have these properties: they are transparent and partially printed. The new ultrasonic fork sensors series UPF-A of SNT Sensortechnik AG have been developed exactly for these applications. They consist of a transmitter and receiver who exchange ultrasonic signals. The transducers are ...
