Reliably detecting water – with MICROmote®
optical sensors from STM |
| |
STM
Sensor Technologie München GmbH: Clear liquids such as water cannot
be detected by optical means in transparent pipes or containers without
further ado. It gets especially difficult if the pipe diameter is very
small or if the containers are only semi-transparent. When using optical
sensors for detection of water levels, the effects of light transmission
and refraction in water can interfere with one another to such an extent
that measurements are actually reversed, especially in the interaction
with the container walls. To solve this problem, the through beam
sensors of the MICROmote® “JJ” series were developed by STM. The
transmitters work in the upper infrared range. In the absorption
spectrum of water there is at this point a maximum and the light of this
wavelength is absorbed by the individual molecules. Water thus becomes
“non-transparent” for the optical system and detection is drastically
simplified. Depending on the size of the sensor or the effective
diameter of the beam, level detection can be attained with particular
precision. ... |

Miniature series with high ranges |
| |
Leuze
electronic: Measuring just 23. 1 x 12 x 8 mm, all device versions of
the 2 Series are considerably smaller than a matchbox. At the same time,
these throughbeam photoelectric sensors, retro-reflective photoelectric
sensors and diffuse reflection light scanners convince with ranges of up
to 2 m. With their small, homogenous and highly visible light spot
generated by a pin-point LED, the sensors are ideal for the detection of
small parts. These tiny devices are unbeatable when the designer is
confronted with highly constrained spaces yet needs a highly flexible
solution in addition to good performance (pnp/npn switching output,
light/dark switching). Secure and simple mounting of the sensors with
standard workshop M3 screws further increases their appeal. The housing,
molded with thermoelastic elastomer, guarantees permanent protection
against environmental influences ... |

Photoelectric sensors with IO-Link –
Sensor intelligence cleverly applied |
| |
Baumer
extends its portfolio of measuring sensors compatible with IO-Link. The
measuring red light distance sensor FADK 14 now offers several new
features that improve the reliablity of your process. Thanks to IO-Link,
the condition of the received signal can be retrieved from the sensor in
different quality levels. This information can be used as a pre-failure
warning. Consequently, photoelectric sensors can solve measurement tasks
even in dusty environments, such as wood processing. Additionally,
IO-Link enables quick and error-free realignment of the sensing range
according to the product in process. The corresponding limits are saved
in the control, thus any errors during product changes are eliminated.
The average value that can be optionally activated enables a higher
resolution and a more stable signal quality especially with a rough
object surface. As a result, IO-Link generates a real added value when
applied with photelectric sensors and these ensure an improved process
reliability as well as ... |

MICROmote® optosensors from STM |
| |
STM
Sensor Technologie München GmbH: MICROmote®-Optosensors from STM are
sensors in the classical sense of the definition. They dispose of highly
efficient micro optics in the sensor head which is able to focus the
light with exceptional accuracy. By means of very special point source
LEDs they are able to generate laser like light spots. They combine very
small sizes with extraordinary high optical output power. MICROmote®
stands for minimum volume, minimum weight and optimum installation. They
may perhaps look like fiber optics but limitations like minimum bending
radii or flexing restrictions from dynamic workloads don’t exist. Other
than with fiber optics an electrical signal is generated directly in the
sensor head and conducted through a highly flexible and at the same time
chemically resistant cable to the amplifier electronics. They may be
operated together with one of the different STM MICROmote® amplifiers as
well as ... |

Optical Measurement of gear teeth |
| |
Profile
scanners (model scanCONTROL 2800-25) from Ortenburg-based sensor
specialist Micro-Epsilon are able to generate digital 3D images
of gear teeth and so can be used to measure the run-out characteristics
of gear shafts with plug-in toothing, bevel gears with hypoid toothing
and similar axial components. As gear wheels can warp during
manufacture, the run-out requires inspection. The extent of the
“ovality” and the direction in which it should be adjusted must be
determined for any adjustment of the workpiece. Special measuring
instruments use high-precision laser scanners that enable automatic
adjustment of the workpiece, quickly and precisely. The scanCONTROL
2800-25 laser line scanner with a 25mm measuring range digitises the 3D
structure of the tooth area and so is used for these types of
application. The scanners achieve a measuring rate of up to 256,000
points per second. The sensor can be configured quickly and easily using
the new Configuration Tools software. ... |

sources in optical sensors. They are offered in an almost unmanageable
variety. The average optical output rating meanwhile is several times
the values that were still common a few years ago and it is continuing
to improve at a rapid pace. The technical characteristics which are
decisive for applications in measurement technology, such as intensity
distribution, beam angle, axis deviations or even just the manufacturing
tolerance, aren't keeping up. Specifically for precision applications in
sensor systems, STM Sensor Technologie München GmbH provides
optoelectronic components under the brand name of microSPOT® whose

Retro-reflective sensor – Has an eye for
transparent objects |
| |
|
Baumer
introduces its new and improved retro-reflective sensor FRDK 14 for
transparent objects. Thanks to the new housing concept, the
photoelectric sensor can be adjusted easily and quickly via a teach-in
button. The high sensitivity of this retro-reflective sensor allows for
it to detect glass, transparent packaging or PET bottles safely. Due to
the short response time of only 0.1 ms, edges of moving, transparent
foils can be positioned exactly. At the same time, it is irrelevant
whether the object is directly in front of the sensor or closer to the
reflector. The short adaptation time of only 20 ms permits the sensor to
be taught subsequently or to be adjusted to changing tasks via an
external teach-in connection while the process is running. In addition
to the red light sensor there is also a laser version available. This
sensor is particularly suitable for ... |

Optical distance sensors with maximal
resolution |
| |
|
With
the optical distance sensors ODSL 9, Leuze electronic has
extended its family of optical distance sensors and set new benchmarks
for speed, precision, compact design and comfortable operation. The
devices feature high precision up to 0.01 mm and short measurement
times. The new optical laser distance sensors ODSL 9 are designed to be
used in precision applications of mechanical engineering and work
according to the triangulation principle. Like Leuze electronic's other
optical distance sensors, they stand out with high ranges relative to
resolution. The devices are available in two types, one with a
resolution of 0.1 mm and a measurement range of 50 to 450 mm, and the
other with a resolution of 0.01 mm and a measurement range of 50 to 100
mm. Their speed is stunning with a measurement acquisition rate of 500
Hz independent of measurement distance and object characteristics. This
turns the new ODSL 9's into the ideal solution, in particular for moving
applications. The speed can also be used for filtering measurement
values and for preprocessing via statistical functions, allowing even
more precise measurements to be generated. The devices operate largely
independent of object characteristics and are nearly insensitive to
gloss and structures. The temperature stability in effect also
contributes to precision. The compact structure of the ODSL 9's in
relation to their performance is a first for optical distance sensors ... |

Photoelectric Sensors - Level measurement
on standpipes |
| |
|
Baumer
Electric: User-friendly level measurement? Baumer’s new level
sensors are convincingly easy to handle. They can be mounted without
difficulty on a standpipe or a tube using the included cable tie. The
diameter of the (half) transparent standpipe on which the sensor can be
mounted can vary from 3 to 13 mm. Once they have been secured, no
further adjustments have to be made on the FFDK 16 as all required
circuitry is built in. However, a switch for dark or light switching
(D/L) is in place. In the optical fiber version, the fibers are arranged
in rows. This allows the sensor to suppress foam or air bubbles of up to
3 mm in size. Foam especially emerges often, and so far it has led to
many measurement errors with optical level measurement systems. Thanks
to the PFI material used, the sensor is also resistant to chemicals.
Another advantage of the optical fiber version ... |

Novel frame adapter, mounting sensors
with a double click |
| |
|
Baumer
introduces a new clever accessory for its Series 14 photoelectric
sensors: a novel frame adapter. This plastic adapter allows for a simple
installation of the sensors without the use of screws or tools. They are
mounted with just two clicks – quickly and efficiently. In many
applications several photoelectric sensors are employed along a conveyer
belt. In these cases it is time-consuming to screw and adjust every
single sensor. Additionally, special mounting angles are often
necessary. Now a recess in the steel sheet of 1.75 x 5.4 cm is
sufficient to install a Series 14 sensor with the frame adapter. The
sensor only has to be snapped into the adapter and together this unit is
inserted into the cut-out. Two plastic clamps secure the adapter in the
cut-out and the sensor is mounted tightly and securely. This
installation saves the user time and he can forego additional, often
expensive mounting angles. Likewise, the sensor cannot be re-adjusted or
shifted accidentally. Nevertheless, when the sensor needs to be serviced
it can be dismounted quickly. The unique frame adapter fits all Series
14 sensors from Baumer, such as diffuse sensors with background
suppression, retro-reflective sensors, or the new LED-based distance
sensors ... |

Automatic geometry inspection of silicon
ingots |
| |
|
Micro-Epsilon
has launched a brand new system for the geometrical inspection of ingots
called “dimensionCONTROL 8260 for Ingots”. In just a few minutes, the
system can inspect the surface of the ingots using several laser optical
sensors (line scanners), which automatically measure the side lengths,
phase lengths, angles, diagonal lengths and planarity of the side areas.
The automatic measuring system compares target data with actual measured
values and then classifies the ingot accordingly. The system calibrates
itself automatically to the common ingot sizes of 125mm x 125mm, 156mm x
156mm and 210mm x 210mm. Ingot lengths of up to 2,500mm can be measured.
Calibration of each respective ingot is carried out by using integrated
master parts or components. The identification of any ingot defects is
performed either automatically with a marking unit or manually. The
weight of the ingot also plays a key role in determining the production
yield. Therefore, the system can also be supplied with an integrated
load cell. The sensor system and base plate traverse along the test item
during the measurement process. ... |

Leakage sensors - Wet feet? No, thanks! |
| |
|
Baumer
Electric: Imagine the tank containing liquid chemicals starts
leaking and nobody notices! Thanks to a new optical sensor for leak
monitoring from Baumer, this will only remain in your imagination. The
FODK 23 is screwed or glued onto a floor panel next to the facility that
is to be monitored. Typically, only 1ml of liquid on the floor is
sufficient for the sensor to react. Therefore, the leak is detected at
an early stage, which prevents more severe damage. The small, round
housing of the FODK 23 with integrated evaluation electronics consists
entirely of a chemically resistant Teflon PFA sheath. As a result, the
sensor is particularly suitable for applications involving
discriminating materials. The clever installation clip made from PRA or
PVC allows the sensor to be mounted and dismounted quickly without using
any tools. Under normal circumstances the integrated fail-safe strategy
provides an active output. In case of a cable break or another failure,
this output changes its state, which can then be evaluated ... |

|
The very popular LRD6110
label sensor from Lion Precision now
offers video setup instructions. Unlike photo-eyes (optical sensors),
the LRD6110 does not use changes in contrast for operation. The sensor
works equally well with standard labels and clear-on-clear labels
without the need for “eye-marks.” The setup procedure is slightly
different than a photo-eye. To aid customers in getting the highest
performance and quickest setup time, Lion Precision now offers a Video
TechNote on their web site providing a clear explanation of the concepts
and techniques used in adjusting the sensor. “While the sensor is quiet
easy to setup thanks to the light bar display, nothing makes
instructions clearer than video,” according Mark Kretschmar,
communication manager for the company. Other video TechNotes are
available. More setup videos are planned for other sensors. Lion
Precision manufactures the world’s leading clear-label sensors with
nearly 40,000 installed around the world. The company’s primary product
line is capacitive and eddy-current noncontact sensors. This technology

Sensors designed for extreme conditions |
| |
|
Leuze:
In the world of sensor technology, achieving functional reliability also
entails providing a practically-oriented design capable of withstanding
even the most hostile operating influences. Leuze electronic offers a
comprehensive selection of scanners for functions ranging from distance
measurement to identification and data transmission solutions, each
equipped with the relevant equipment features. Ranges, degrees of
measurement accuracy, transmission outputs, beam angles and response
behaviour are among the many technological properties which determine
the functional characteristics of sensors. Performance in application is
also to a large extent a question of choosing the right
practically-oriented design and drawing on extensive application
expertise. In warehousing and conveying applications particularly,
system components are frequently exposed to air-borne pollution or
heavy-handed treatment under time pressure in daily operation, as well
as the whole range of adverse conditions from extremes of temperature
through to chemical cleaning agents and spurious light sources.
Practically-oriented product development from Leuze electronic is
characterized by features such as high performance reserves in optical
sensors which render the components insensitive to the accumulation of
dirt, and guarantee reliable differentiation between objects and their
background. Warning outputs provide early indication of accumulating
dirt. Troublefree operation is also aided by resistance to spurious and
ambient light sources in Leuze electronic optosensors by A2LS (Active

options. The new, transparent rear housing section allows the sensor
interior to be readily observed. The decisive advantage: Operating and
reception LEDs can be viewed from practically every angle – offering a
decisive advantage during sensor installation, adjustment and operation.
The plug connection has also been optimized. The 4-pin M8 connector
(S35A) is now available in a new metal version. This results in greater
resilience and increased torque values. Reworking the housing design
also allowed to create additional connector versions: Aside from an S35A
metal connector, a new cable version and a new M12 (S14) connector
version are also available. The cable version in particular captivates
thanks to its specific features: The patented cable channel has been
designed to allow users to lay the cable flush against the sensor
housing whenever space is at a premium, thus requiring no additional
depth space as is the case, for example, with a plug-in connector. In
the same way, the cable channel can also face towards the back or
upwards, allowing installation on a single surface. Our extensive line
of accessories and fasteners such as mounting angles, Sensorfix
brackets, etc. can all be used with the new design. The new sensor

sensor with pin-point LED |
| |
|
Balluff series BOS Q08M miniature photoelectric sensors in the
rugged, block-style metal housing stand out with their compact form
factor and high precision. They are used wherever components of light
weight, small footprint and the greatest switching precision are
required, such as on robot gripper arms and miniature grippers. New in
this mini-photoelectric family is a performance-enhanced through-beam
sensor with pin-point LED. The sensor, which replaces the previous red
light version, provides an absolutely homogenous light spot and a .2
meter extended range with generous performance reserves. The visible red
light opens up new applications to the user which used to require laser
sensors: Detection of especially small components as well as demanding
positioning tasks. The BOS Q08M sensor features resolution of down to
0.4mm and switches at the precise same location every time even with
laterally approaching targets. It is available with NPN or PNP output,
light-on or dark-on switching as well as cable or pigtail versions. A

Laser copy counters SCATEC - When every
copy counts |
| |
|
Baumer
Electric: The SCATEC family of laser copy counters is suited to
counting newspapers and magazines in one lap stream. The recognition
principle used by SCATEC is based on a patented optical edge detection
method. This method renders the SCATEC family extremely insensitive to
colors. Matte to high-gloss printed objects (e.g., gold labels) can be
reliably registered up to the maximum counting rate. The SCATEC family
provides solutions that are optimally tailored to the most varied
applications. The SCATEC-10 registers copy thicknesses from 0,1 mm and
up and allows counting rates up to 3 million copies/hour. It can be
programmed either by way of the integrated panel with text display or
using special software for analysis and parameter setting. The SCATEC-15
also has a CAN interface that can be used to retrieve all data or to
program the sensor for a new product. An integrated retro-reflective
sensor registers and analyzes the gaps ... |

So many labels, so little time…just use
Checker |
| |
|
Cognex:
OTE Group based in the Netherlands, produce and export special
hydrating, cleaning and lubricating fluids for the lens care market. As
well as their own three product lines they deliver more than 1000
private labels to customers with their own brands. Delivering the
finished products all over the world, they need to be sure that all
bottles reach their destinations in perfect condition and in good time.
In addition, OTE face the strict requirements of the medical and
pharmaceutical industry. Previously, quality control was assured
manually by the naked eye. But when faced with the challenge of boosting
their quality the company decided to use the Cognex Checker to ensure
that the production code is present and also to check if the label is on
the bottle. Using Checker ensures that quality control is improved
meaning better traceability and faster more reliable production. OTE
Group maintain high quality standards conforming to ISO standards for
filling and manufacturing and so they cannot afford to take chances.
Checker – reliable part detection even on high speed production lines:
Cognex vision sensors are the simple and affordable solution for
verifying the presence of product and packaging features. Essentially a
versatile "multi-sensor", a single Checker detects features that would
require multiple photoelectric sensors, or ... |

Baumer Miniature sensors - Small,
lightweight and precise |
| |
|
For
applications in restricted space, Baumer offers the most diverse
miniature sensors for convincing and precise solutions. The small IWRM
04 distance-measuring inductive sensors, with a diameter of 4 mm and a
housing length of only 30 mm, are the most compact inductive analog
sensors on the market. With a short response time of 0,5 ms and the high
resolution of 1 μm, they are without equal in this size class. The FHDK
04 optical miniature sensor provides a compelling argument with very
high efficiency background suppression. The Baumer developers were able
to accommodate this sensor in a housing measuring only 4 x 6 x 45 mm.
With a bracket for profiles and only one groove plate, this sensor can
be secured in any commercially available extrusion frame. Several
sensors may be operated next to one another without any mutual optical
interference. In addition, the IO-Link communications standard is
supported. Ultrasonic sensors ... |

Novel edge control with ultrasonic fork
sensor |
| |
|
SNT Sensortechnik AG: Edges of running webs and belts get laterally
misaligned after a short time without permanent external control.
Typical applications are found for example in the manufacture and
processing of foils, paper, tin or textiles, but also for drive belts.
Previously, mechanical or optical sensors have been used to determine
the lateral position of the edge in order to continuously adjust
mechanically. These are often too slow or too sensitive to dirt and
dust. Moreover, optical sensors cannot reliably detect edges of
transparent or partially transparent material. Especially modern
packaging and labeling foils have these properties: they are transparent
and partially printed. The new ultrasonic fork sensors series UPF-A of
SNT Sensortechnik AG have been developed exactly for these applications.
They consist of a transmitter and receiver who exchange ultrasonic
signals. The transducers are ... |

IO-Link sensors - innovation with true
value added! |
| |
|
Baumer
Electric: IO-Link is the new standard in the lower communication
layer supported by leading automation and sensor manufacturers. An
IO-Link sensor transmits standard digital or analog output signals and
provides an additional serial data communication with the control unit
as master to exchange parameters such as the measuring range,
sensitivity, time delay and operating mode. Because the serial data
transmission needs no additional wires and the output signals are
compatible, it is possible to use standard cables and connectors and
combine or mix IO-Link devices and standard devices. This advantage
simplifies the entry, realization and use of this new and easy
technology. Baumer offers now an expanded range of IO-Link products.
From the smallest optical switches up to ultrasonic and inductive
distance sensors, a wide variety of technologies and devices is
available. ... |
