has announced an increase in output, bucking the trend
as recent figures announce a slowdown in output from the
manufacturing sector. The company finished its 2011
financial year 15% up on 2010 figures. Managing
Director, Steve Sargeant says the company’s key to
success is being able to convert orders that need a
quick turnaround, while managing customer expectations.
“With budgets tight, many companies are waiting until
the last minute to order their load cells, so they can
hold on to their cash for longer. This means we are
often presented with very short deadlines. Handling the
manufacturing here in the UK enables us to keep a close
track on all throughput, at the same time being able to
monitor and ensure the best possible quality of build
and performance. Managing customer expectation is also
important as although our load cells can be a small part
of a larger system, they are often ‘mission critical’.
This means that misleading customers on delivery dates
can cause them serious problems.” Steve says that
although enquiry levels have been even more
unpredictable than in the past, there has been a general
increase, especially for custom, specialist products.

highly experienced in-house design engineers who time
and time again have demonstrated their ability to meet
both the commercial and technical requirements of
clients. For one offshore engineering systems
integrator, LCM Systems provided a complete shackle load
cell solution designed to match stringent criteria,
complete with full American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)
traceability. The enquiry was made by a long-term client
of LCM Systems, who had previously bought load pins from
LCM to be installed into shackle and pin assemblies
already on site. This project was to provide a complete
shackle load cell solution for measuring mooring tension
but there were some important criteria that needed to be

designed to fit into an existing link plate and the pin
had to be manufactured from 17-4PH stainless and

(National Type Evaluation Program) is required, to show
compliance with NIST Handbook 44. In the USA, the
technical requirements that relate to weighing
technology are specified in NIST Handbook 44. NIST
(National Institute for Standards and Technology) is
more or less comparable with the PTB (German National
Metrology Institute) in Germany. There are a number of
requirements to be met before weighing components can be

compression load cell BM14G4 from Zemic has
been awarded the OIML R60 C4 approval for ”legal-for-trade”
applications. The NMI in the Netherlands have examined and
tested the BM14G4 and concluded that an approval with a Y-value
of 8800 for standard C3 and C4 is applicable, with a Z-value of
4000. Approved capacities from 10 to 50 tons are available. For

version of Pancake Load Cells LCF700 in 2.0 mV/V output: LCF701 Fatigue
Rated Pancake Load Cell. FUTEK can also provide this model with a
tension base. These load cells are primarily used in inline applications
on actuators or threaded assembles. FUTEK currently carries these models
in 1.0 mV/V output as a standard but can provide the new 2.0 mV/V output
per request. Engineering Manager, Richard Walker commented that “FUTEK
plans on phasing out the 1.0 mV/V standards over the next 18 months
making the 2.0 mV/V output a standard.” In addition to the high output,
the noted Pancake Load Cells are built for a long fatigue cycles.
Capacity options will be limited to 200,000 lbs utilizing a stainless
steel structure making them more suitable for harsh environments.
