| Fast and compact: New laser distance sensor
from Jenoptik |
| |
Jenoptik:
The LDS30 laser distance sensor is designed for
applications that require instantly triggered and very
fast data acquisition. The compact sensor provides
measurement rates as fast as 30 kilohertz within a
measurement range of up to 250 meters and an absolute
accuracy in the centimeter range. The maximum range is
achieved for measurement on special targets, for example
common retroreflectors. For natural surfaces with 10%
reflectivity the measurement rage still covers 30
meters. The laser sensor operates completely eye-safe emitting
invisible laser light of 905 nanometers wavelength.
Typical applications for the LDS30 encompass object
detection, proximity sensing or altimeter operation. The
laser sensor can be used for two- or
three-dimensional object scanning systems in industrial
automation. Dedicated for easy and flexible system
integration: The LDS30 laser sensor is constructed for system
integration. It is available in two versions: the
ready-to-install housed LDS30 sensor version is
IP67-proof as well as shock- and vibration-proof and
thus optimally suited for installation into harsh
industrial automation environments. The LDS30 module
version is intended for individual integration into
specialized system solutions. For easy connectivity the
sensor is equipped with RS-232 and RS-422 interfaces,
respectively, as well as with two digital switching
outputs and an analog data output. LDS30 – the new

| Pocket-sized OADM 260 laser sensor measures
up to 13 meters |
| |
Baumer
expands its portfolio of
distance measuring sensors with the OADM 260 laser
distance sensor. The new time of flight technology
sensor measures distances up to 13 meters. With its
compact housing it is one of the smallest and at the
same time most powerful laser sensors on the market. The
laser sensor is especially suited for path measurements in
large-format machines, e.g. in wood, metal or paper
processing, or in hydraulic lifts and raised platforms.
The repeat accuracy (+/- 5 mm), linearity (+/- 20 mm)
and short measuring repetition rate of 10 ms allow
precise measurements even on moving objects. The compact
design of the laser sensor facilitates its integration into
the application. The integrated standard alarm output
improves the safety of the process. This output reports
if the
laser sensor cannot interpret the received signal
due to heavy soiling of the lens. Additionally, it
indicates if there is no object in the measuring range
of the laser sensor. ... |

| Displacement
laser sensors with a blue laser |
| |
Micro-Epsilon
presents at first a triangulation sensor
that utilise Blue Laser technology. In
numerous applications, Blue Laser
sensors are superior to standard
laser sensors that use a
red laser diode. When measuring on
metals, particularly annealing metals
and organic materials such as wood,
skin, foodstuffs, veneers, etc., the
wavelength of the blue-purple laser
offers significant benefits. In contrast
to a red laser, the reduced wavelength
of the blue laser light does not
penetrate the measuring object. The blue
laser generates a minimal laser point on
the surface and therefore offers stable,
precise results on measuring objects
that are normally considered as
critical. The design of triangulation
sensors with Blue Laser technology is a
complete re-design. The laser sensors
are equipped with new high-end lenses,
new intelligent laser control and
evaluation algorithms. Laser sensors
with Blue Laser illustrate the ongoing
development of numerous standard
commercially available laser sensors.
For example, the optoNCDT 1700
industrial standard laser sensor.

| LineRunner 300: 3D measurement with the laser
light sensor from Pepperl+Fuchs |
| |
Pepperl+Fuchs:
Whether path correction, edge or gap measurement, volume
measurement or tolerance verification, the tasks and
requirements of modern vision solutions are varied.
Pepperl+Fuchs has developed a powerful and reliable
laser light sensor in the form of the LineRunner 300
(LR300) to overcome these challenges. In the laser light
process, a line projected onto an object is detected by
a camera at a specific angle. Height and width
information are determined using the triangulation
principle. As a result, the LR300 is able to process
even the most problematic color and contrast
characteristics using a sophisticated exposure time
control and due to its laser protection class 1
conformity, saves on costs that would otherwise be
incurred through workplace safety measures for higher
laser protection classes. The LineRunner delivers width
and height data in millimeters via an Ethernet
interface, enabling direct connection to an evaluation
system. The LineRunner 300 by Pepperl+Fuchs is a
reliable, robust laser light sensor with an impressive
safe laser protection class and sophisticated exposure
time control. ... |

| GLSK laser fork light barrier |
| |
STM
Sensor Technologie München GmbH: Conventional
laser fork sensors achieve their high object resolution
only with the aid of apertures in front of the
transmitter and receiver which reduce the dimensions of
the collimated laser beam. Due to this design, the
measuring signal can be lost already with slight
mechanical deformations of the enclosure. With the laser
fork light barriers in the GLSK line from STM, the
transmitter unit itself emits a laser beam of high
precision. It is accurately circular with a diameter of
0.4 mm and its residual divergence is only 2 mrad. The
achievable object resolution therefore results directly
from the quality of the laser beam. The receiver can
thus be configured as a large-surface photodiode element
without a converging lens and its directional behavior.
Any distortion of the unit as a whole, such as can come
about from warping when being tightened upon
installation or from an asymmetrical temperature
deformation, are no longer relevant. Despite high
precision in object recognition ... |

| Gap measurement by laser
scanner |
| |
The
new gapCONTROL
laser scanner from Micro Epsilon
has been developed specifically for non-contact gap
measurement. The sensor is based on laser light section
technology, though it makes use of a totally new
evaluation procedure. Known as gapCONTROL 2711, three
different models can measure different types of gaps up
to 300 mm deep and 50 mm wide. The sensor supports the
user in welding processes, measuring flushness,
overlaps, proximity and height discrepancies, etc. The
data is then used for the robot control or quality
assurance purposes. All the electronic features are
integrated in the sensor, making it quick and easy to
mount. Using the gapCONTROL setup software tool, the
sensor can be quickly prepared for its measurement task.
Depending on the nature of the gap, only those
parameters are provided that are necessary, in order to
keep the settings as simple as possible. The software
can also be tested fully without a scanner. The sensor's
standard outputs are FireWire, Ethernet or RS422. Other

| New laser sensor for particularly
demanding applications |
| |
With
three new sensors Baumer expands its
OADM 13 family of
distance measuring
laser sensors. Thanks to innovative technical
improvements, the laser class 1 sensors solve
particularly demanding, so far unresolved tasks. At the
same time, they are easy to handle. On the one hand, the
sensitivity of the receiver was increased to allow
measurements on extremely light-absorbing surfaces. So
far low reflectivity materials, such as black paper or
rubber, and also highly glossy surfaces, such as plastic
parts or varnished sheet metal, were a major challenge.
Now the new OADM 13 laser sensors can be used for applications
with these conditions. They are able to process object
reflectivities down to 0.5 %. On the other hand, the
software was optimized to a very high ambient light
immunity of more 100 kLux. Thus, reliable measurements
can be guaranteed under any condition. Additionally, the
measuring accuracy at color transitions, e.g. at print
products or oxidized surfaces, was considerably
increased through improved optics. The new laser sensors
work with ... |

|
Micro-Epsilon’s
new high-end laser triangulation laser sensor is
known as the optoNCDT 2300. The new series
offers a measuring rate that can be set up to
50kHz. The laser sensor will be offered
initially as a set of 5 models with measuring
ranges between 2mm and 100mm. The entire
electronics is integrated in the extremely
compact (80mm x 75mm) laser sensor. The optoNCDT
2300 offers a resolution of up to 0.1µm and a
linearity of up to + 0.4µm. The new A-RTSC
(Advanced Real Time Surface Compensation)
feature is a development of the company’s
already proven RTSC technology and, with its
improved dynamic range, enables a more precise
real time surface compensation during the
measuring process. This works by adjusting the
automatic exposure regulation to customer
requirements to an even greater extent than
before. Data output is via Ethernet, RS422 or
EtherCAT (2nd Quarter 2010). The entire laser
sensor configuration is made possible by means
of an ergonomically designed Web interface. With
transparent objects, the change from
displacement measurement to thickness
measurement can also be made. A sensor records
the first and second reflection from the target
surface. This means there is no need for a
second sensor during the process monitoring of
transparent plastics. The optoNCDT 2300 laser
sensor is used for extremely high speed
applications. The laser sensor can be used to
monitor vibrations or on difficult, uneven
surfaces ... |

Pepperl+Fuchs:
Miniaturization provides us ever more efficient, more compact and more
intelligent sensors. In this way, designers can profit from advanced
methods in both new machines as well as plant modernization, without the
necessity of engaging in the underlying and sometimes very complex
technologies. The product concept of the world’s first multi-line laser
light sensor in the form of a smart camera shows that advance also
includes light sensors. The light section process is long established in
industry and science for accurately detecting objects two or
three-dimensionally. As well as large discrete systems consisting of a
light source, camera and PC-based control interface, compact industrial
grade laser light sensors have long been available on the automation ... |

Profile
scanners (model scanCONTROL 2800-25) from Ortenburg-based sensor
specialist Micro-Epsilon are able to generate digital 3D images
of gear teeth and so can be used to measure the run-out characteristics
of gear shafts with plug-in toothing, bevel gears with hypoid toothing
and similar axial components. As gear wheels can warp during
manufacture, the run-out requires inspection. The extent of the
“ovality” and the direction in which it should be adjusted must be
determined for any adjustment of the workpiece. Special measuring
instruments use high-precision laser scanners that enable automatic
adjustment of the workpiece, quickly and precisely. The scanCONTROL
2800-25 laser line scanner with a 25mm measuring range digitises the 3D
structure of the tooth area and so is used for these types of
application. The scanners achieve a measuring rate of up to 256,000
points per second. The sensor can be configured quickly and easily using

Measuring laser sensor for distances up
to 4 m |
| |
|
Baumer
has recently added the laser distance sensor OADM 250 to its portfolio.
The sensor is based on time of flight technology and covers an operating
distance of 4 m – even on black objects. The OADM 250 complements
Baumer’s broad range of laser distance sensors. Sensors of the same size
working with the triangulation principle reach their limit at distances
of 1 m. This is where the OADM 250 comes in. It is suitable for
applications in which distances between 0.2 m and 4 m have to be
measured. Thanks to a special calibration, the measurement is
independent of the object color and surface properties. The repeat
accuracy (+/- 5 mm), linearity (+/ 20 mm) and short measuring repetition
rate of 10 ms allow precise measurements also on moving objects. The
compact design of the sensor facilitates its integration into the
application, and especially any retro fitting. The integrated standard
alarm output improves the process safety. This output reports if the
sensor cannot interpret the received signal ... |

The
PS1 from ELTROTEC is a laser proximity that due to its adjustable
optic allows for setting an either round or elliptical light spot in
various sizes. Even in fast processes and short cycle times the sensor
is not missing out on a single part: due to the switching frequency of 5
kHz the sensor can be used in assembly and supply systems running at
high speed. PS1 is mainly used for controlling assemblies and presence
of small parts as well as electronic components on printed boards making
high resolution an important feature and allowing detection of parts
from 0.1 mm and up. Compact and easy to install these sensors are
similarly suited for breakage control in machine tools and through the
elliptical light spot adjustment reliably detect structured surfaces
which otherwise might cause problems to small light spots. Easy
adjustment and control as the red light shows a wave-length of 675 nm,
meaning it is visible. The precise detection on point 0.1 mm will be

optoNCDT1402 laser sensor from Micro-Epsilon |
| |
|
The
new optoNCDT1402 laser sensor from Micro-Epsilon replaces the
company’s previous optoNCDT 1401 product. The new sensor provides
improved performance and extreme flexibility. This flexibility comes
from a brand new Teach-In function, which can be used to limit or change
the measuring range for each application. In this way, both the
resolution and the linearity of the sensor in the pre-set measuring
range can be significantly improved. This is of particular benefit in
applications where only a small measuring range but high performance is
required. The flexibility of the optoNCDT 1402 is further enhanced by an
integrated swivelling cable connector, which can be used to change the
direction of the cable output to suit the individual application. By
utilising a CMOS sensor, the optoNCDT 1402 has an increased measuring
rate of 1.5kHz making it suitable for rapid processes. An RS422 digital
interface is provided, as well as analogue current / voltage output. As
before, the new series comprises seven sensors, which have measuring
ranges between 5mm and 250mm. Together with the integrated controller,
the very compact design makes mounting faster and easier and
installation is possible in restricted spaces. Due to its very
effective, real time compensation process for the changing reflection
characteristics of different target surfaces, the optoNCDT 1402 sensor
is universally ... |

Automatic geometry inspection of silicon
ingots |
| |
|
Micro-Epsilon
has launched a brand new system for the geometrical inspection of ingots
called “dimensionCONTROL 8260 for Ingots”. In just a few minutes, the
system can inspect the surface of the ingots using several laser optical
sensors (line scanners), which automatically measure the side lengths,
phase lengths, angles, diagonal lengths and planarity of the side areas.
The automatic measuring system compares target data with actual measured
values and then classifies the ingot accordingly. The system calibrates
itself automatically to the common ingot sizes of 125mm x 125mm, 156mm x
156mm and 210mm x 210mm. Ingot lengths of up to 2,500mm can be measured.
Calibration of each respective ingot is carried out by using integrated
master parts or components. The identification of any ingot defects is
performed either automatically with a marking unit or manually. The
weight of the ingot also plays a key role in determining the production
yield. Therefore, the system can also be supplied with an integrated
load cell. The sensor system and base plate traverse along the test item
during the measurement process. ... |

Laser sensors for reflecting surface |
| |
|
Special
sensors for optical distance measurement of direct reflecting materials
are now available from Micro-Epsilon. Designated as the optoNCDT
1700DR, this new series expands the manufacturer’s already extensive
sensor family. Three sensors with the measuring ranges of 2mm, 10mm and
20mm are designed specifically for use with polished metals, glass or
chrome-plated products. The high measuring rate of 2.5kHz and the
maximum resolution of 0.1µm make precise measurement of the desired
targets possible. The reflected laser beam is guided into the receiving
array by tilting the sensor and is then directly converted into an
electrical signal by the integrated controller. The design is identical
to the successful optoNCDT 1700 standard series. As well as the
integrated controller, the series also incorporates a foil keypad
directly on the sensor, whereby adjustments without configuration
software are possible. The comprehensive ILD Tool 1700 software, which
also makes a measured value display possible, is included as standard
for more simplified operation of the sensor at a computer. A different
tilt angle is ... |

Laser micrometer offers twice the
measuring range |
| |
|
Laser
micrometers are now available from Micro-Epsilon that provide
more than double the existing measuring range. The two new models are
called optoCONTROL 1202-75 and optoCONTROL 1202-100. The measuring range
of these two new devices are 75mm and 100mm respectively. The sensors
are therefore ideally suited to applications where previously two laser
micrometers had to be used, since the measuring range of one sensor was
insufficient. An additional controller unit is not required for the two
new models Nevertheless, the transmitter and receiver unit has a height
of just 30mm. For both measuring instruments, the transmitter is
separate from the receiver; therefore, the measuring instrument is
extremely flexible for mounting. The measuring device is fully digital
with a CCD array as the receiver. In this way, a very high, independent
linearity of 0.2% is possible. Easy-to-use configuration software is
included as standard, which enables the measuring device to be easily
adjusted to suit the application. For simplified commissioning, the
target value can be adjusted, for example, by using potentiometers on
the back of the device to define Teach-In or switching limits. The
optoCONTROL 1202 operates with a visible Class 2 laser. The laser light
and interference filter make the device insensitive to external light
influences. The transmitter projects ... |

Laser scanner-supported automatic order
picking |
| |
|
Leuze:
The greater the disparity in terms of shape and stability between
different items for order picking, the more difficult it is to create
automated solutions. The crucial issue is always whether the packing
patterns generated using the robot or handling system is in agreement
with what actually ends up on the pallet. This is a question that can be
answered by laser distance sensors ROD 4plus. Surface area distance
sensors ROD 4 from Leuze electronic are ideally suited for a wide range
of different applications in the field of warehousing and conveying
technology. The ROD 4plus is a variant of this device designed
specifically for measurement assignments. By ensuring high-speed
measured data transmission, it is particularly suited for the
measurement of 3D profiles which can be generated by relative pivoting
or linear feed movements of the measured object or laser scanner. 3D
measurement works reliably within a measurement range of up to 65 m,
making it ideally suited for the scanning heights of 200 – 3000 mm which
typically occur in order picking applications. The achievable degree of
accuracy is ±15 mm in the X and Z position. ... |

Measuring large distances using
time-of-flight measurement |
| |
|
Micro
Epsilon has extended its product range with new laser sensors. In
addition to the existing time-of-flight sensors there are four new
complementary models. Under the names optoNCDT ILR 1181, 1182, 1183 and
1191, these sensors provide new approaches to solving automation tasks.
The 80 Series functions according to the phase comparison principle,
whereby a precise distance measurement is possible. They achieve a
measuring range of 30m for use on diffuse reflecting surfaces and 150m
when using a special reflector, which guides the laser pulse back into
the optical system for large measuring distances. The optoNCDT ILR 1191
operates according to the “Time-of-Flight” principle and achieves a
measuring range of 3,000m with a reflector; a measuring range of 300m is
possible without using the reflector. With a linearity of between ±3mm
and ±5mm or ±20mm to ±0mm for the 1191 series and a repeat accuracy of
less than 0.5mm, these sensors are ideal for precision measurement
tasks. ... |

Multitalent for high process reliability |
| |
|
The
HRTL 96B laser light scanner from Leuze electronic for horizontal
positioning, overshoot control, safeguarding the operation of cranes,
compartment occupation checks in intralogistics systems. The multitalent
is especially well suited for positioning tasks and reliable object
detection. It is mounted on the high-bay storage device for safely
positioning pallets on shelf racks in automatically operated, single-,
double- or multi-depth storage systems. With its very good b/w detection
thresholds, the scanner can determine whether a compartment is occupied.
It works on the principle of pulse propagation time measurement. As a
result, other light sources, far and near interfering contours, rounded
shelf edges and different surface colours or materials—such as
reflecting pallet foils and different, even dynamic, backgrounds, like
passing storage and retrieval units for high-bay warehouses—are no
problem for the scanner. Thanks to its large detection range from 50 to
6000 mm, the scanner replaces the complex, mechanical overshoot controls
on the shelves by inspecting the position of the pallet in the shelf
compartment and its protrusion during the bring/fetch process. This
increases process reliability considerably and reduces the work and
costs in assembling the steel construction. The HRTL 96B laser light
scanner is ... |

Rubber thickness measurement using Acuity
laser sensors |
| |
|
Acuity laser sensors are used throughout the tire and rubber
manufacturing industries. Rubber sheet manufacturers need online
thickness measurements for Quality Control and system control feedback
loops. Rubber presents several challenges for non-contact metrology
equipment with its low surface reflectivity, dirty measuring
environments and elevated material temperatures. System integrators for
the tire and rubber industry demand reliable, non-contact measuring
devices to minimize downtime and scrap material production. Rubber
conveyor belt manufacturers use Acuity laser displacement sensors to
measure the thickness of black rubber sheet in a calendaring process.
After numerous trials and worldwide installations the AccuRange 700-4
sensor model was chosen to replace other equipment which failed to meet
accuracy and speed requirements. The AR700 sensor is extremely durable
and meets the environmental requirements for this industrial
application. During calendaring and rubber processing, the surface of
the rubber sheet may be very shiny and very black, creating challenging
conditions where little light can be reflected back to a sensor’s
detector. Acuity installs an upgraded laser diode in their rubber
thickness measurement sensors, bringing 5 mW of laser power (standard is
1 mW) to get a stronger return signal off the dark surface. The
increased power with Acuity’s patented optics, results in excellent
sensitivity on the rubber sheet and fast measurement speeds. ... |
