the MS9001.D, a ±1g MEMS tilt sensor, to complement its existing family
of MEMS accelerometers for down borehole and directional drilling
applications. MEMS accelerometers are already extensively used in many
drilling applications such as MWD (Measurement While Drilling), LWD
(Logging While Drilling) or HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) where
reliability under harsh environment, high stability and low power are

Electronics: In the automotive industry, development time is a key
factor for successful market positioning. Tyco Electronics’ answer for
this is a platform strategy for non-contact switches and angular- and
travel sensors. Standardized designs and production processes offer
short-term availability of fully functional sensors for functional
testing. One highlight is the hall technology based travel- and angular
sensor platform for measurement ranges up to 40mm or angle ranges of
360° (see picture). Travel and angle measurement can be realized within

principle which results in a significant measurement performance

New tilt sensor for rugged, safety
critical applications |

+ Giles has launched a new robust tilt sensor, STT500, for use in
safety critical applications used on cranes and lifting platforms. A
tilt sensor is an essential part of a Safe Load Indicator (SLI) system
on a crane, designed to alert the operator if the lift is exceeding the
safe operating range of the machine. The SLI measures the angle and
extension of the boom along with the load weight, and calculates if the
machine is working within the manufacturers suggested safety margins.
Based on proven solid-state technology, the STT500 provides distinct
advantages in reliability, stability and compactness over fluid based,
electrolytic and pendulum operated sensors. It can operate from a 5V or
8-30V power source and has a measurement range of ±10º, ±20º, ±30º or
±60º with an output from 0.5 to 4.5Vdc over the full inclination angle.
STT500 is supplied in a marine grade (LM6) cast aluminium alloy housing
with 88mm diameter flange. It has a high environmental protection rating
of IP69K to withstand the ingress of dust and fluids, even under high

new low cost 2-axis inclinometers PEI-Z210-PCB-V1 and PEI-Z215-PCB-V1
are developed for the automotive equipment market, specially the wheel
aligners and wheel balancers. The PCB design associated with MEMS
sensors results that at small place much technology is provided for low
cost. The linearity is better than 0.25% full scale of ±10°
(PEI-Z210-PCB-V1) or ±15° (PEI-Z215-PCB-V1). The analog output delivers
a voltage proportional to the measured angle. The zero-point setting is
done in the factory, the PEI-Z215-PCB-V1 can be fine-tuned in the field

dramatically over the last twenty years. The system of textile roofs has
been developed continuously and complemented by retractable hard tops
since the beginning of the nineties. The complete kinematics has high
mechanical tolerances, but the robustness of the complete system must be
provided every time. In order to provide availability and accuracy, non
contacting position sensors are being used either for on/off position
detection or angular positions detection. For a proper working
kinematics in a roof system, position and angular sensors are designed
in. Depending on the mechanical design, different types of sensors are
being used for these applications, such as on/off position detection at
kinematics, angular detections at swivel joints, and end position

Hybrid Applications |

Tyco
Electronics: New emission legislation and the trend towards energy
efficient transportation support an increased development in the area of
hybrid propulsion for passenger cars. One of the key applications for
improved fuel economy in the hybrid market is the recovery and storage
of energy during the braking phase or regenerative braking. When
braking, the energy of the moving car is converted and stored in the
Li-ion batteries instead of being dissipated through the heating of
braking disks. Upon acceleration of the car, the available electrical
energy is used to help the car speed up by releasing this energy into a
controlled electrical motor. More advanced systems may continuously
propel the cars’ electrical motors. In order to keep the efficiency of
the electrical hybrid motors at a maximum level, the position of the

AG: The new T7 is a compact absolute inclinometer utilizing a unique
solid-state sensor to give high accuracy tilt readings over a full 360
degree range (single axis). Networking Interfaces, programmable damping,
zero setting, -20°C to +100°C temperature range and IP67 sealing make
this inclinometer best suited for solar tracker or heavy construction
equipment. The T7 provides ±0.1 degree accuracy in the range 0°C to 70°C
with 0.01 degree resolution. The T7 is available with either a RS232 or
USD-CAN interface. The RS232 version supports up to fifteen T7s on a
single bus. Our USD-CAN protocol allows a network of up to sixty-four
T7s to be connected over 200m cable length to a single host. Power for
each T7 is supplied over the network cable. The host accesses the
T7-USD-CANs through our low cost CANA-232/CANA-485 adapter module. This
module allows the host to access each T7 on the network using simple

announce the release of one of the world’s highest stability ±3g full
range accelerometer commercially available, the RS9003.A. RS9003 is an
ideal sensor designed for tilt measurement, measurement whilst drilling,
borehole survey and other drilling applications where precision sensing
over time in harsh and safety critical environments is demanded (see

also a perfect product for stabilization of large platforms such as
