interfaces to machine control (PLC) and LabVIEW® from National
Instruments |
| |
The
measurement technology specialist HBM
offers piezoelectric force sensors and the corresponding
CMD600 type charge amplifiers for those applications
where rapid and reliable force measurement is required.
Force measurement technology is an important component
of machines and systems, both in production and
automation technology as in research and development. In
the sensors, the force being measured generates a charge
due to the piezoelectric effect which is amplified by
the CMD600 charge amplifier and then the measured value
is output via a rapid signal output with up to 30 kHz.
The peak and limit value outputs integrated in the
amplifier can be used for the rapid evaluation of the
force response. The force measurement must often be
integrated in a higher level control system in more
complex machines and systems. CMD600 offers an Ethernet
interface for such cases and HBM offers various software
solutions for automation technology. The first option is
connection to a PLC via the TCP/IP channel of the
real-time Ethernet protocol Profinet®. ... |

| New strain transducer with integrated
electronics for cost-effective force measurement |
| |
The
measurement technology specialist HBM
is now introducing strain transducers with integrated
electronics for simple and cost-effective measurement of
forces to the market. The SLB700A/06VA-1/2 transducer
models work with strain gages and have an integrated
amplifier, outputting measured values via an analog
output with 0 - 10 V or 4 - 20 mA. The strain
transducers work in the force shunt and can be easily
attached with 4 screws to the component whose loading is

to a strain that is transfered to and measured by the
strain transducer. The amplifier integrated in the
transducer ensures that the force measurement can be
easily set up and implemented. The amplifier is set up
for this purpose with a so-called Teach-In method via a
control contact. ... |

Simple and reliable direct monitoring of clamping force |
| |
|
SIKO
GmbH: Force monitoring plays a decisive role in
many basic machine functions. Workpieces have to be
tightly clamped, tools and stop positions fixed, maximum
load limits of lifting units observed. With the KS
series of force switches, SIKO presents a modular series
of machine elements for monitoring such forces. Thanks
to their variable design, they can be integrated
effortlessly into existing machinery and equipment
concepts for direct force monitoring. The SIKO force
switch can be used to monitor production steps and
safeguard quality. With SIKO force switches, the force
to be monitored is defined via disc springs, whereby the
spring deflection is limited mechanically. By using
different spring assemblies, switch points between 1.7
kN and 30 kN can be covered. As each force switch
ordered is configured to monitor a specific force,
time-consuming on-site adjustment is unnecessary

Force Sensors Improve Robot Balance and Grip |
| |
|
Tekscan:
Robots in any industry, from consumer devices to manufacturing
applications, must be able to sense whether or not a contact has
been made, and/or how much force occurs during a given action.
Force Sensing is Vital to Proper Balance. Humanoid robots which
display proper balance while walking, running or dancing appear
infinitely more life-like than those that don’t. A robot with
better balance means fewer falls. This translates to less damage
to the robot itself, better handling of objects it might be
carrying, and in general a more impressive display. Aldebaran
Robotics has developed the most widely-used humanoid robot for
academic purposes. Their Nao Robot is so fascinatingly life-like
that it has been very successful in motivating students to learn
the engineering and scientific principles behind robotic
development. Aldebaran has embedded FlexiForce sensors into the
feet of the robot to monitor balance. The force sensors ensure
that the robot properly shifts its weight to ensure that it does
not tip over while walking or dancing. Force Sensors Ensure

Simple, precise and economical
measurement of compressive and tensile forces |
| |
|
High-precision
measurement of compressive and tensile forces is possible with the new
S9M force transducer from HBM. The transducer works with strain
gages (SG) and is extremely accurate, thanks to its so-called S-type
geometry. This gives the S9M an accuracy class of 0.02, which is a great
improvement compared to its predecessor the S9, which had an accuracy
class of 0.05. Compensation for parasitic influences, such as lateral
forces or bending moments, is excellent, and measurement reliability
improves accordingly. Integrating the transducer into an application is
correspondingly simple. The transducer is also impervious to the effects
of temperature, even for temperature gradients. The S9M is available
with different nominal (rated) force ranges, from 500 N to 50 kN. The
strain gages are hermetically integrated into the measuring body, and
are safely protected. Because the material used is stainless steel, and
the degree of protection is high (IP68), the transducer can also be used

State-of-the-art 3-Component Force Calibration System for 3-Component
Force Sensors, Dynamometers, Crash Plates and Force Plates |
| |
|
At
its headquarters in Winterthur, Kistler Instrumente AG has
commissioned a new 3-component calibration system for force sensors.
Kistler will now calibrate its 3-component force sensors as well as
dynamometers, force plates and crash plates on this system. The new
calibration system was manufactured by an established test equipment and
systems specialist to a tight yet comprehensive Kistler specification.
The new system allows calibration of sensors and systems with heights up
to 0,90 m and other dimensions not exceeding 1,60 m. The load ranges
extend up to 500 kN in the vertical and 100 kN in the shear direction.
The best measurement capability (BMC) is determined for each system
force component in the course of calibration traceable back to the
national standards. Kistler certificates the calibration of
multicomponent sensors. In addition to the calibration values, the
certificates list the measurement uncertainty of the calibration now
forming part of the standard for force or torque calibration ... |

Compact piezoelectric force washer with
20 kN nominal (rated) force expands the PACEline program from HBM |
| |
|
The
metrology technology specialist HBM is expanding its range of
piezoelectric force washers into the lower nominal (rated) forces
with the 20 kN version of the CFW series. The new force washer has a
diameter of just 14.5 mm and a height of 7 mm, and is therefore very
compact in relationship to its nominal force, allowing it to be easily
integrated in applications, even in those where very little space is
available. The piezoelectric principle of measurement with which the
force washer works has a sensitivity that does not depend on the nominal
force and it is therefore recommended for measurements in the partial
load ranges where greater resolution is required. The symmetrical design
of the sensor represents good linearity characteristic and simple
mounting as the inner and outer ring of the sensor can be solidly
connected to the surrounding construction. Like the other sensors in the
CFW series, the CFW/20KN also has a very small ... |

Multichannel Charge Amplifier Enhances Precision and Flexibility in
Laboratory Applications |
| |
|
Kistler:
Extremely accurate measurement of physical quantities in laboratory
applications requires precise signal amplification. The new, modular
high-end multichannel charge amplifier Type 5080A… from Kistler is
designed to cater to a whole variety of tasks with these requirements.
For example, it amplifies the signals from piezoelectric sensors for
multicomponent force measurement. This makes this innovative amplifier
ideal for applications such as recording the minute forces encountered
in micromachining. As the successor to charge amplifier Types 5017 and
5019, new Type 5080A… is intended for mounting in 19" racks. Its modular
design allows expansion to eight amplifier modules at any time. It can
accommodate both charge modules for piezoelectric sensors and dual-mode
modules with charge/Piezotron® input. This enables acquisition of not
only force signals but also signals from sensors measuring pressure,
acceleration or torque sensors. This possibility of combining charge and
dual-model modules in the rack permits recording of, for instance, force
and acceleration signals with the same unit. ... |

RoaDyn® S220 2-Component Measuring
Hub Meets Rolling Resistance Standards ISO 28580, SAE J1269 and ETRTO
117 |
| |
|
Kistler
has expanded its range of multicomponent measuring hubs for tire test
stands. This complements the RoaDyn P5xy piezoelectric 5-component hubs
with the RoaDyn S220 2-component design including strain gage force
measuring technology. The S220 measuring hub Type 9289A103 measures
changes in rolling resistance in the tangential direction Fx as close as
possible to the tire footprint. The use of strain gage technology allows
static measurement of the contact force Fz and control of the test
stand. The RoaDyn S220 measuring hub meets the requirements of the
established rolling resistance standards ISO 28580, SAE J1269 and ETRTO
117 for passenger car tire load indices of up to 121. By contrast with
the torque and power measurement methods also used for rolling
resistance tests, the S220 relies on the force measurement method. By
measuring very close to the tire footprint the force method increases
accuracy by reducing parasitic losses. Subsequent data conversion
optimizes measurement precision on rolling resistance test stands by
eliminating the effect of crosstalk. Data output is analog in the case
of the RoaDyn S220 measuring hub and digital with the RoaDyn System 2000 ... |

RoaDyn® S615 System 2000 6-component
Wheel Force Transducer with Characteristics Optimized for Small and
Light Cars |
| |
|
Kistler:
In addition to engine and air resistance, the key factors in the
development of vehicles with reduced fuel consumption are weight and
rolling resistance. The new RoaDyn S615 is a wheel force transducer
tailored to this car of the future. Reduced vehicle masses and narrower
tires allow further reduction of the weight of the CFRP (carbon fiber
reinforced plastic) components of the transducer. It is optimized for
recording load spectra for durability, vehicle dynamics and power train
investigations. Design of the RoaDyn S615 is based on a three load cell
concept. Saving one cell and its mounting screws shaves 400 g off the
weight of the established RoaDyn S625 light-weight wheel force
transducer system. There is another potential saving of 400 g available
in the design of the inner part, whose CFRP construction offers a
reduction of up to 20 % compared with the RoaDyn® S625. The optimized
design of the RoaDyn S615 allows a maximum vertical load Fz of
approximately 15 kN. ... |

Kistler Extends its Successful Series of
Press Force Sensors |
| |
|
The
well established Kistler press force sensors are based on the
piezoelectric measuring principle. The force acting on the quartz
element generates at the output of the sensor a proportional electric
charge, which is converted by the series-connected measuring amplifier
(such as ICAM Type 5073A...) into a process signal suitable for
evaluation (typically 0 ...10 V). The new sensor Type 9383A… extends
Kistler's successful series of piezoelectric press force sensors. The
sensor preloaded ready for mounting with the three standardly calibrated
measuring ranges of 0 ... 3 kN, 0 ... 30 kN and 0 … 300 kN is ideal for
measuring both dynamic and quasistatic forces. Together with an in-line
charge amplifier with range switching, such as the ICAM Type 5073A…,
extremely wide force ranges can be represented with one and the same
sensor – with consistent accuracy over the entire range. The sensor also
offers tried and tested mechanical features with flange connections at
both ends for easier interfacing with the machine environment, and
centering rings for axial adjustment. The rotationally symmetrical shape
makes the press force sensor perfect for use on the end of push rods or
press plungers. Press force sensors from Kistler are available in
different sizes and measuring ... |

Joining in Extremely Confined Spaces with
New Electromechanical NC Joining Module NCFS |
| |
|
Successful
automation of joining processes where room is at a premium and joining
stations closely spaced requires particularly slender modules.
Kistler developed its electromechanical NC joining module Type
2152B… for applications such as press fitting valve seat rings and valve
guides. Its specialized housing construction makes it particularly rigid
despite being very compact. Its special shape and a center distance of
just 70 mm allows very close spacing of neighboring stations on an
assembly line. A special high-precision guide also helps minimize the
amount of space required for mounting. The center distance can be
reduced even further by pressing eccentrically within the permissible
range. Several electromechanical NC joining modules NCFS Type 2152B… can
be assembled into a single joining station. This allows faster
throughput by avoiding the usual need to synchronize several assembly
stations. The integral piezoelectric
force sensor in the robust housing
of the NC joining module NCFS gives a choice of two predefined measuring
ranges of 15 and 25 kN. ... |

Load cells – robust and precise |
| |
|
The
DLRx load cells from Baumer are calibrated, analog force sensors.
These sensors are needed to measure forces very accurately – as quality
assurance as well as when controlling facilities and machines. They are
built directly into the flux of force. Thus, they can measure very close
to the spot where the force takes effect. Load cells are easy and
time-saving in their operation. The sensor emits the agent directly as
an analog signal. Therefore, the complete system does not have to be
calibrated. Higher cycle times are reached, because the sensor measures
statically. In contrast to dynamically measuring sensors, this system
does not have to be relieved of pressure and be tared. The precision of
the load arises from their high measuring accuracy. ... |

3-Component System for Measuring
Machining Forces during Turning |
| |
|
With
Type 9129A… Kistler Instrumente AG is introducing a 3-component
system for measuring machining forces (cutting force (Fc), feed force
(Ff), passive force (Fp)) during turning processes. The modular system
is based on the dynamometer Type 9129AA, which is also new. The
modularity allows different lathe adapters (VDI, Coromant Capto and
clamping unit for standard turret) and various sizes of turret adapters
to be mounted on dynamometer with a minimum of manipulation. Toolholders
for cutting and boring tools can also be readily mounted on the cover
plate of the dynamometer. Type 9129A… is suitable for machining forces
of up to 8 kN. The special design of the dynamometer minimizes
temperature error. The piezoelectric sensor system on which this
measuring system is based measures the forces with virtually no
displacement. Ground loop problems are largely avoided by
ground-isolated mounting of the sensors. Provided matching cables are
used, the corrosion-resistant dynamometer is protected against ingress
of cutting fluids to IP67. On inclined bed lathes with two turrets the
measuring system can be mounted over or under the workpiece. The
components of this system are designed to ensure that - irrespective of
the mounting position ... |

NC Compact System Speeds Setting Up of NC
Joining Modules with Force-Displacement Monitoring |
| |
|
Kistler:
Standard joining processes, such as pressing bearings onto shafts, can
be flexibly and reliably automated by the use of electromechanical NC
joining modules from Kistler with integral force-displacement
monitoring. Kistler's new NC Compact System now makes setting up and
operation of these modules quicker and easier. As a closed system with
integral controller and firmware it cuts capital expenditure and
installation costs, reduces susceptibility to faults and facilitates
integration into existing on-site control environments. In addition to
the NC joining module with matching IndraDrive servo controller, NC
Compact System consists of firmware (NC Compact (Type 2159A)) and
operating panel (Type 2158A) with 5,7" TFT touch screen display. The
operating panel is used for configuring the parameters of a standard
joining process, visualizing the process and backing up data. As it is
not needed for ongoing operation, a single panel is sufficient for
configuring the parameters of several joining modules. The NC Compact
firmware is preinstalled in the IndraDrive servo controller. It includes
up to 16 programs with force-displacement monitoring and integral
sequence control. ... |

HBM increases calibration capability to 5
MN |
| |
|
HBM has introduced a new calibration machine for forces up to 5
MN at its DKD (German Calibration Service) laboratory in Darmstadt. The
machine means that the laboratory can now calibrate
force transducers from 2.5 N up to 5 MN on site. The German
Calibration Service – in conjunction with experts from HBM and the
German Metrology Institute, the PTB - has attested the calibration
machine as having a measurement uncertainty of only 0.02% of the
measured value. The maximum permissible force of 5 MN corresponds to a
mass of about 500 t; by contrast a 200 m long ICE3 train has a mass of
about 400 t. A hydraulic power unit generates the forces required for
calibration in the machine. During calibration, signals from the
force transducer under calibration are compared to the machine’s
integrated reference transducer. The new machine has been specially
designed to produce the huge maximum force and calibrates both
compressive and tensile
force transducers. The latest machine strengthens HBM’s leading role
in force calibration and backed by its many years of experience since
the calibration laboratory became the first to be accredited by German
Calibration Service in 1977. HBM provides customers with a complete
measurement chain including products and services for
force measurements. The company offers integrated solutions ranging

Strain links – Force measurement made
easy |
| |
|
Baumer
Electric: DSRT strain links from Baumer are screwed onto the
surfaces of machines that are under pressure. In these positions they
detect linear strains. Thanks to a calibration of the complete system,
the extension can be converted into a force. Since they only need to be
screwed, strain links are easy to install. Therefore, they provide a
good alternative to strain gauges (S/G) that are glued directly onto the
machine or to load cells that have to be integrated into the machine.
This particular task often proves to be complicated and cost-intensive.
Using a strain link can save between 40 and 90 minutes, compared to the
glued S/G. The strain link can also be screwed onto the machine again
easily after needing service. The sensor is reliable with small as well
as superimposed strains. The special geometry of the measuring element
transforms the extension mechanically, which results in higher
resolutions. Additionally, the optimized design of the measuring element
allows to decouple bendings and torsions from the linear extension.
Hence, they do not influence the measurement results. Due to an
integrated amplifier, the design of the sensor is very compact. With the
taring function of the amplifier the sensor can be reset at any time.
Strain links are used for easy force measurements ... |

Innovative Piezo-electric Force Washers
Expand the Sensor Portfolio at Hottinger Baldwin Messtechnik GmbH |
| |
|
Piezocryst
Advanced Sensorics: Piezocryst and HBM introduce new piezo-electric
force washers for industrial process control. A new innovation in force
measurement technology was being introduced to an audience of
specialists at the SPS/IPC/DRIVES trade fair in Nürnberg. The two new
force washers cover a force range up to 50kN and 140 kN and offer all
the advantages of piezoelectric measurement technology: Extremely robust
and virtually displacement-free, highly dynamic measurement in a compact
size. The force washers offer innovation, which puts them above
conventional rings. Due to their patented (patent pending) construction
with a split membrane function, the housing becomes more symmetric and
the actual membrane becomes more warp resistant. This characteristic
elevates measurement safety during processes where the force
introduction into the rings is critical (for example, from the retainer
of a ball-bearing). In addition, this ring can be installed with
positive locking, without influencing the measurement through friction
on the inner ring surface. In conventional force washers, this often
manifests itself in the form of an unwanted hysteresis. The sensors
already show an impressively high linearity under minimal tension, thus
making it possible to measure even minimal forces ... |

Clamping force sensor for cable car and ski lift |
| |
|
Magtrol
SA, Switzerland, specialist in force measurement, presents a new
range of force sensors enabling the check and control the clamping force
cabin on ropeway as well as emergency brake forces. Based on strain
gauges technology, the SK-01 sensor is measuring the force along the
clamping distance and not only on a single point. It is easy to install
and suitable for outdoor use (stainless steel construction). The sensor,
which has 1% of accuracy, can also be delivered with accessories such as
amplifier and specific display. This sensor is available in two
different ranges: one for ropes of diameter 20 to 38 mm for forces up to
300 kN, the other for ropes of diameter 40 to 60 mm for forces up to 400
kN. The adaptation to the specific rope diameter is made by mean of
shells surrounding the sensor body. Thanks to its flexibility and
competencies, Magtrol is able to offer specific customized design, in
both, dimension and forces. Over the years, Magtrol has been gathering a
strong position in the supply of load sensors and overload control
system in the cable transport field (cable cars, ski lifts, chair lifts,
funiculars) and in the crane industry. This new SK-01 sensor completes
favourably the Magtrol Load-Force-Weight product range, including
load pins, load cells, force sensors ... |

Piezo-controlled Cracking of Piston Rods |
| |
|
Piezocryst
Advanced Sensorics: In nearly every motor you will find piston rods,
which transfer the piston stroke to the crankshaft. Frequently,
separated piston rods are employed which, in the past, had to be
produced in multi-level processes with a high standard of production
accuracy. Through the use of piezo-electric force sensors, it is
possible today to produce piston rods in a much more simplified
production process. Here, the piston rods are systematically cracked at
a predetermined breaking point and then fitted together later. In using
this procedure, not only production costs decrease, but the piston rods
also exhibit better behavior in relation to shear forces. Procedure:
Most piston rods have two bearing shells, which were always handled in
separate processes and had to be intricately fine-tuned to enable proper
mounting. This fine-tuning required a very high level of production
precision and therefore represented a substantial cost factor. In order
to reduce these costs, the piston rods are now produced as one-piece
precision forging parts and then cracked at a defined position. The
fracture faces created, fit together exactly and do not need any
additional handling. Compared to conventional faces, micro gearing
allows for high level of component strength against shear forces; the
fracture faces are almost invisible after assembly. ... |

Parameter Setting of Industrial Charge
Amplifiers and Transmitters Made Easier with ManuWare |
| |
|
The
ManuWare user interface shows connected instruments, instrument status
and test measurement curves at a glance. The latest generation of
Kistler transmitters (press force transmitter Type 9337A... and
strain transmitter Type 9238A...) is equipped with a serial computer
interface as standard. They can be fully parameterized quickly and
easily using the PC program ManuWare. The proven industrial charge
amplifier ICAM Type 5073A... is also supported by ManuWare. After
connection to the PC, ManuWare recognizes sensors or charge amplifiers
using an AutoScan function and lists them in the program. The status of
recognized devices is shown at a glance. Instrument groups can be
structured as one single project. Parameter configuration is performed
intuitively through device-specific dialogs. A graphical display of the
test measurements and auxiliary functions for scaling indirect
measurement help the user set up force measurement applications. The
number of simultaneously supported measuring channels is only limited by
the power of the computer being used. The settings of the fully
configured devices can be saved on the PC. The resultant back-up files
make it easy to provide replacement instruments or measuring chains with
identical parameter configurations for similar applications. ... |

HBM miniature force transducer controls
assembly processes |
| |
|
HBM’s
new PACEline force transducer family provides measurement ranges from
5-120kN for reliable integrated force measurement especially where space
is a constraint. Where using uncalibrated force washers has only been
possible so far, transducers of the PACEline family can now be used. The
flange mounted transducers eliminate the need for preloading and thus
for additional calibration of the system as a whole. Every transducer is
available with two calibrated measurement ranges - 20% and 100% of
nominal force. This eliminates the need to use many different transducer
types, because multiple measurement tasks can be implemented using a
single type of transducer. The size of piezo sensors from the PACEline
series is 3% of that of other sensor technologies. The sensors measure
at consistent accuracy over many decades. A balanced, industrial charge
amplifier is used for signal conditioning to +/-10V analog standard
signals. For industrial applications, the charge amplifier provides TEDS,
electrically isolated inputs, and electrical isolation of measurement
signal and supply voltage. ... |

Amplifier improves solar panel production |
| |
|
The
production of photovoltaic modules for solar panels can now be improved
by using a measuring chain comprising HBM’s digiCLIP amplifier
with a force transducer. Photovoltaic modules use large quantities of
small silicon wafers. These need to be produced in large quantities to
exacting standards. During this process the silicon is normally cut into
wafers using wire saws. Optimal force application of the wire saws on
the silicon is essential to precise cutting and minimal loss of
material. digiCLIP permanently acquires the force signals and transmits
the signals to the production control system through Profibus-DP within
a few milliseconds. During the process digiCLIP evaluates any variations
and enables immediate correction through the control system. . ... |

Impulse Hammers with TEDS |
| |
|
Dytran
Instruments, Inc. offers impulse hammers with TEDS capability. With a head weight of 100 grams, they are available in five
ranges, between 50 LbF and 1,000 LbF. The 5800BT Series utilize an
exclusive acceleration compensated quartz force sensor to ensure that
hammer self-resonances do not produce spurious “bumps” in the hammer
output spectrum. The high rigidity of the force sensor combined with
acceleration compensation produces a clean, smooth output signal which
is an exact representation of the forcing function, both in amplitude
and phase. Dytran’s piezoelectric impulse hammers of a head assembly
containing a force sensor ... |
