| LBA Low Pressure Sensors Offer Special
Versions With Highest Resolution for Respiration Applications |
| |
Sensortechnics’
LBA series offers
differential low pressure sensors based on thermal
mass flow measurement of air through a micro-flow
channel integrated within the silicon sensor chip. The
sensors are ideal for differential pressure flow
measurement where the pressure drop across a flow
element is a
measure of the volumetric flow rate. For high
performance medical respiratory devices it is essential
to detect very small flows around the zero flow point
while additionally being able to measure full scale
flows of several hundreds of l/min. For these demanding
requirements Sensortechnics now offers special versions
of its LBA sensors with increased resolution of 0.01 %
in the lower pressure range and at the same time high
dynamic ranges greater than 10,000. The LBA sensors
feature an innovative MEMS construction which integrates
the micro-flow channel and fully analog CMOS signal
conditioning within the silicon sensor chip. This
decreases the flow through the LBA sensor by several
magnitudes compared to other flow-based pressure sensors
and allows high immunity to condensation and dust
contamination. Further, the LBA differential pressure
sensors can be used with long connecting tubes and input
filters without the need to recalibrate or correct the
output signal. Because the flow impedance is predefined
at the sensor chip level the LBA series ... |

Sierra Introduces Chlorine Measurement Breakthrough at an Economical
Price |
| |
Sierra
Instrument’s new Chlorine-Trak™ 760S Thermal Mass Flow
Meter was specifically designed to perform as an accurate and
cost-effective mass flow measurement solution for chlorine
injection processes found in typical waste-water treatment
applications. Given the corrosive nature of chlorine gas
(particularly in the presence of moisture), finding an
economical measurement solution has posed a great challenge to
the industry. To answer this challenge, Sierra has designed a
flow body manufactured from Kynar® polyvinylidene fluoride resin
(PVDF). This material offers excellent corrosion and chemical
resistance at both ambient and elevated temperatures. PVDF is
also inherently stable, mechanically tough, and abrasion and
flame resistant. “This is an ideal solution for waste-water
treatment,” says Scott Rouse, Sierra Product Line Director. “The
Chlorine-Trak’s direct mass flow reading requires no pressure or
temperature compensation and provides immunity to corrosion and
accuracy for chlorine flow measurement at an economical price.”. ... |

| Calibration of flow sensors for air and gases
at SCHMIDT Technology |
| |
Calibration
of measuring systems provides clarity about their
characteristic and allows a more accurate evaluation of
the measurement results. It simultaneously achieves
referring or basing it on an international system of
units. At SCHMIDT Technology,
calibrations of flow sensors are carried out at the
highest technological level. Measurements are an
important part of industrial quality assurance. However,
inherent in each measurement are so-called measuring
uncertainties, which may have many causes. To minimize
the unavoidably systematic deviations, which to a large
extent are also due to the measuring devices themselves,
they can be calibrated or recalibrated. Calibration of a
measuring system is by definition "An activity for
determining the relationship between the output values
of a measuring device … and the associated values of a
measuring quantity established standards under specified
conditions". The obtained comparative results do not
lead to adjustment via an intervention in the device.
They are recorded in a measurement log and output in the
form of a calibration certificate. This means that
calibration leads to detailed knowledge about the
characteristics of a measuring system, which increases
with increasing number of the calibration points
distributed over the characteristic line. Detailed
knowledge of the deviation between actual and target
values, i.e., output value and correct value of the
measuring quantity, increases the measuring certainty

| SCHMIDT® flow sensors with ATEX certificate |
| |
For
applications in potentially explosive areas, upon
request the thermal flow sensors 20.500 from
SCHMIDT Technology are available in Ex designs
according to ATEX Directive 94/9/EC (ATEX 95) for use in
flammable media. Their patented dumbbell makes the
SCHMIDT® flow sensor SS 20.500 predestined for use in
dust-containing air and aggressive gases. However, these
atmospheres are often also potentially explosive, which
gives rise to additional requirements that the systems,
units and components must meet in such environments. For
these applications, SCHMIDT Technology offers the SS
20.500 in 'Ex' design. They conform to ATEX Directive
94/9/EC (ATEX 95 and 100a) and meet the ATEX
requirements according to category 3 for Zone 2 (gases
and vapors) and Zone 22 (dusts). To this end, special
protective functions have been integrated, such as the
protective sleeve for the plug-in connector of the
connecting cable and the grounding terminal on the
housing. For difficult mounting situations, the version
with remote sensor, i.e., separated from the electronic
housing, is recommended. Both components can be used on
their own in Zone 2 or Zone 22 and are connected
directly to the power supply without a Zener barrier. In
the remote version, additional grounding is done on the
sensor tube. ... |

KROHNE successfully applies non-radiometric density solution to tailings
thickener underflow |
| |
|
KROHNE
successfully applies an OPTIMASS Coriolis mass flowmeter to a
tailings thickener underflow line to provide a non-radiometric
density solution for an Australian coal producer. Located in
Central Queensland is one of Australia largest and most
established open cut coal mines. The adjacent coal handling and
preparation plant has production capacity of greater than 10
million tonnes per annum of coking coal and at current rates of
production, reserves that can support the operation for a
further 50 years. Reliable thickener underflow density
measurement allows this facility to optimise its tailings
disposal schemes to recover water, minimise tailings impoundment
areas and comply with regulations over the life of the facility.
Radiometric density measurement has traditionally been employed
on thickener underflow lines as they provide a non-contact
solution to the high solids, high abrasion environment present
in minerals processing. However the high total cost and
regulatory requirements of owning these radiometric devices is
becoming prohibitive in a competitive, cost and labour intensive
production environment. Aside from the initial purchase price,
licensing, transportation of nuclear source, documentation and
administrative controls, the radiometric devices require ongoing
training of on-site radiation safety officers who can perform
calibration, wipe tests and ensure regulatory compliance. Add to
this decommissioning and disposal costs and one can see the
driver for a robust, non-radiometric density solution. ... |

over the Complete Measuring Range |
| |
|
Sensortechnics
develops highly sensitive thermal mass flow sensors for
air and gases with measuring ranges up to 500 l/min. For
the demanding requirements of medical ventilators
Sensortechnics offers custom solutions with two sensing
elements featuring excellent resolution and accuracy
over the complete measuring range. One sensor chip is
located in the middle of the main stream for the
measurement of very small flows around the zero flow
point. A second chip is arranged in a bypass
configuration and measures higher flows up to full
scale. The flow sensors utilise a microcontroller for
digital signal processing and can continuously switch
between the two sensing elements. Sensortechnics’ mass
flow sensors achieve very fast response times below 10
ms and offer a linear analog output signal and a digital
I²C or SPI bus interface at the same time. An important
performance characteristic of high quality medical
ventilators is the early detection of the patient’s
inhaling phase. This ensures that spontaneous breathing
can immediately be supported with a defined overpressure
and the patient’s work of breathing is kept as low as
possible. Additionally, a high resolution and accuracy
over the complete flow range is essential for many
applications. Both requirements can be perfectly met
using Sensortechnics’ flow sensors with two sensing
elements. ... |

SCHMIDT
Technology: SCHMIDT® sensor ball valves are the
ideal solution for the easy installation and
de-installation of immersion sensors into and from pipe
systems in compressed air systems or industrial
processes without interrupting substantially the
operation of the system. These sensor ball valves are
physically similar to conventional ball valves but they
are provided with an additional opening for the
installation of the immersion sensors. If not fitted
with a sensor, the opening is sealed with a tight
sealing cap. To introduce the sensor, the sensor ball
valve must only be closed and then opened again.
SCHMIDT® sensor ball valves are suitable for air or non
aggressive gases and are available for all common pipe
diameters from 1" to 2". For pipe diameters bigger than
DN 65, it is recommended to use a SCHMIDT® straight-way
ball valve with welded nipple. ... |

Easy and cost-effective flow measurement |
| |
|
SCHMIDT
Technology: There are different
measurement principles for measuring flow
velocities and volumetric flows in air and
gases. The following comparison clearly shows
why the thermal anemometry is, in most of the
cases, an adequate solution. To determine the
flow velocities and/or the volume flows, it is
necessary to know the characteristics of the
possible measuring processes in order to choose
the ideal solution for the respective
requirements. Pitot tubes, orifice plates,
Venturi tube or the thermal anemometry are
normally used for this purpose. The Prandtl
pitot tube: The flow velocities can be measured
using a Prandtl pitot tube. The dynamic pressure
is measured as a difference between the total
pressure and the static pressure via two
measuring connections of the pitot tube. The
pitot tube measurement is relatively insensitive
regarding contamination or flow turbulences. Due
to its design, the pitot tube "blocks" the flow
profile to a very low degree which causes a
slight loss of pressure. Moreover, the pressure
and the temperature of the medium must be also
measured for a precise determination of the flow
velocity. Due to the principle, the dynamic
pressure increases squared compared to the flow
velocity. Since the pressure increases very
slowly at the beginning, this measurement method
is not suitable for low flow velocities such as
they occur in the room air monitoring. ... |

|
Krohne: Krones largest ever filler is
completely equipped with BATCHFLUX filling EMFs. Built for
Coca-Cola Andina, Chile, the huge system is currently being
commissioned at its destination in Brazil. It will be used to
bottle (carbonated) soft drink products in a variety of bottle
sizes ranging from 2.00 to 2.75 litres. In one hour, the machine
can fill 37,000 2-litre bottles. And that is not even its
maximum capacity: its capacity of 78,000 litres an hour means
that the filler will be able to fill 3.0 litre bottles at a rate
of 26,000 bottles per hour in the future. Equally as spectacular
as the performance data is the way the filler was transported:
Krones packed the almost 30 tonne machine in a crate measuring
nine by seven by 3.4 metres. It travelled over land from the
Krones factory in Neutraubling to Hamburg, where it was then
shipped to Brazil. A total of 162 BATCHFLUX 5500 C devices are
installed on the rotating filler. BATCHFLUX 5500 is an
electromagnetic flowmeter (EMF) for the volumetric measurement
of conductive liquids. ... |

Exact Measurement of Compressed Air and Gas Consumption, New Flow Meter
for Compressed Air and Gases |
| |
|
Only
by knowing your exact compressed air and
process gas costs will you be able to
unearth significant savings potentials.

temperature, the EE771 flow meter from
E+E Elektronik measures
mass flow or volumetric flow in your
supply system with the greatest
accuracy. The flow meter can be used
effectively to measure the consumption
of compressed air, nitrogen, helium,
argon, oxygen or other non-corrosive
gases. The design of the new EE771 flow
meter is based on the direct thermal
mass flow measuring principle. At its
heart is an E+E hot-film sensor element
proven over several million
installations in the automotive
industry. The large 400:1 measuring
range ensures precise evaluation
throughout the supply system. Even the

SCHMIDT Technology offers well priced flow sensors specifically for
compressed air applications |
| |
|
SCHMIDT
Technology: Although compressed air is 'only'
air under pressure, at 1.5 to 3 cents per cubic meter,
it is one of the most expensive carriers of energy. This
is reason enough to use it sparingly. The use of
suitable sensors helps analyse and optimise compressed
air usage, identifying leaks rapidly and efficiently and
reducing maintenance costs. SCHMIDT Technology has now
launched its insertion flow sensor SS20.261, which is
designed for volumetric flow measurements in compressed
air installations of up to 8 bar, is easy to use and
competitively priced. Even if the compressed air
production installations are equipped with system
components tuned to one another, each compressed air
network suffers losses that generate high additional
costs. An example: In a medium-sized production plant,
compressed air is produced at a compressor power of 960
m3/h. Production runs in a two-shift operation, giving
energy costs for compressed air of about 21,000 €.
Typical losses of 25% from leaks are commonplace and add
an additional 5,300 € to the running costs for the
company running the compressed air network. However, the
annual costs can be noticeably reduced by optimizing the
plant. With an accurate and continuous analysis of the
actual consumption, the energy costs could be lowered to
about 17,000 €. Realize it by making a one-time
investment with 629,-€ for a volumetric flow sensor. ... |

SPS/IPC/DRIVES: Measuring technology and communication come together |
| |
|
At
SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2010, KROHNE
presented examples of how to integrate
state-of-the-art process measuring technology
into communication systems. Representative of
the entire portfolio, a few functional models
will be used to demonstrate how measuring
devices can be connected to fieldbus
communication interfaces such as Profibus, HART
and Foundation Fieldbus. Of particular interest
to users is that not only can the measuring
devices transfer
flow,
level and
temperature values, but also information
from the integrated diagnostic functions. For
example, an electromagnetic flowmeter in the
OPTIFLUX family can detect application errors,
report a measurement error or the need for
maintenance and indicate when operating outside
of specifications. The wireless remote
transmission of readings via GSM network will
also be demonstrated live at the stand: a
completely battery-operated and thus
self-sufficient measuring station, consisting of
the WATERFLUX water meter and a GSM transmitter,
transmits the values via the mobile network ... |

Non-Invasive Flow Sensor SONOFLOW for the Use at Flexible Tubes |
| |
|
SONOTEC
presents for the first time its latest clamp-on flow sensor SONOFLOW
CO.54 for the use at flexible tubes at the COMPAMED 2010. The specialist
for ultrasonic applications from Halle expands with the intelligent flow
sensor for non-invasive flow detection its sensor series. Potential
applications of the compact sensor for a quick and reliable flow
detection lie in the field of medical, laboratory and pharmaceutical
technology. Due to its special construction the sensor provides great
advantages in areas with strict hygienic standards. The method is
adaptable to individual tube sizes and other specifications, such as
power supply, different materials and signal output. Since the tube is
to be pressed into the clamp, the sensors have no contact with the
liquid and they do not need any coupling medium. The flow measurement is
independent of the liquid colour. Further advantages of the clamp-on
method are the quick operating principle without any time lag and the
fact that there is no wear at the flow sensor. ... |

Thermal anemometers for process control |
| |
|
SCHMIDT
Technology: In innumerable processes, the prevailing process gases
must be detected, monitored and controlled. There are some
methods of measuring their flow velocities or volumetric flows,
but thermal anemometers are the only ones that measure
independently of pressure and temperature. This gives them a
very broad range of applications in process technology and
engineering. Monitoring and control of industrial processes
require all relevant parameters to be measured, including
volumetric flows or flow velocities of the process gases used.
Different measurement principles are available for their
determination. Thermal anemometry, which has two big advantages,
is widely used. On the one hand, the measurements are
independent of the prevailing pressure and temperature
conditions, as the sensor only detects the number of molecules
flowing past it. On the other hand, an anemometer does not
require any mechanical components. This results in a long
service life of the sensors and insensitivity to impacts and
vibrations. Moreover, the sensor is not subject to any drift
during operation as a result of this measurement principle ... |

Sierra Cryogenic Version of Their Innova-Mass Vortex Flow Meter |
| |
|
Sierra
Instruments, Inc.: In an effort to provide an advanced and more
reliable measurement system to the liquefied gas measurement market,
Sierra Instruments has introduced a new cryogenic version of their
Innova-Mass® multivariable mass vortex flow meter. This application has
been historically serviced by the turbine flow meter, however given that
the multivariable mass vortex meter has no moving parts to wear out or
be serviced, the benefit of the instrument is a more reliable, stable
reading and an increased service life. The new Innova-Mass cryogenic
version has undergone extensive testing and field validation over the
last several years proving that the meter is preferred versus
traditional turbine meters for measuring mass flow rates of cryogenic
fluids down to -328°F (-200°C). Using a special cryogenic temperature
RTD, mass calculations are done with the latest density equations of
state for liquid Oxygen, Nitrogen, Argon, and CO2. The Innova-Mass Model
240 and Model 241 measure five process variables (mass flow, volumetric
flow, temperature, pressure and density) through one process connection. ... |

IST’s Micro Flow Sensor for Ultra Low
Gas-Flow Applications |
| |
|
Innovative
Sensor Technology has developed a new MFS02 micro flow sensor that
utilizes thin film technology to layer platinum micro heaters and
temperature sensors on an ultra sensitive polymer membrane. The MFS02 is
capable of measuring the thermal mass flow of gases in a range from
0.001 to 2m/s (up to 50m/s), and has a chip temperature range of -40 to
+150°C. Polymer Membrane Construction: Using the same thin-film
construction philosophy as IST’s FS series flow sensors, the MFS02
employs a special glass substrate with an ultra thin polymer membrane to
achieve extreme sensitivity. A high performance material, the polymer is
characterized by outstanding thermal, mechanical and chemical behaviors.
Reduced thermal conductivity of the polymer membrane leads to better
thermal contrast and thus better sensitivity. Additionally, the sensor’s
glass substrate allows for a much higher operating temperature, making
the measurement of larger flow rates possible. Custom Sensor
Applications: IST’s development of the micro flow sensor allows

Scientific investigations prove adverse
effects from contamination in reflecting ultrasonic flowmeters are a
myth |
| |
|
Krohne:
Ultrasonic flowmeters for custody-transfer measurement of natural gas
are prone to contamination. There have been continuous allegations that
ultrasonic flowmeters with soiled reflectors will measure inaccurately
due to the contamination on the reflectors. Up to today, there have been
no test results that will withhold this allegation. Exhaustive
investigations at the EON Ruhrgas high-pressure gas testing facility in
Lintorf (Germany) on possible effects of contamination on ultrasonic
flowmeters (UFM) have irrefutably shown that the accuracy is not
affected by the reflection principle. Indeed, the investigations
substantiate a significant advantage of reflection technology; actually
compared to direct path measurement the level of contamination can be
recognised from the reflection properties of the acoustic signal. ... |

SCHMIDT Technology: Flow sensors for
cleanrooms |
| |

Defined
overpressure ensures the product and process safety in cleanrooms. If
the required pressure measurement by means of a flow sensor is provided
additionally, for example by means of SS 20.400 by Schmidt Technology,
the controlled air volume adjustment can help to improve the energy
efficiency in cleanrooms significantly. To obtain excess pressure in
cleanrooms, very high volume flows are usually required in the
air-conditioning system. Not least for safety reasons and due to
reliable measurement of pressure by means of differential pressure
sensors, the standard EN ISO 14644 specifies excess pressure values in
the range from 5 to 20 Pascal. For example in pharmaceutical cleanrooms,
they often lie between 15 and 30 Pascal and even higher. The air volume
required to control the room pressure accounts for the significant share
of the energy consumption by an air conditioning system to supply
cleanrooms. Practical experience prove that just the current consumption

|
|
Not a question of taste |
| |
|
Krohne:
The position of the control valve in flowmeters can be crucial when
measuring gas flow, regardless of whether the valves are built into the
device or separate. If a valve is used to reduce the flow at the inlet
of the measuring device, the pressure in the measuring tube behind the
valve is reduced. Because gases are compressible, this change in
operating pressure results in a significant measurement error. For
example, a pressure reduction from 5 to 4 bars of absolute pressure in
the measuring tube of a variable area flowmeter results in a measurement
error of almost 12 %. Therefore, more or less gas flows unnoticed
through the device than is displayed. However, when the valve is
positioned at the outlet, the drop in pressure does not occur until
after the measuring tube and thus does not affect measurement. For this
reason, KROHNE offers the "control valve at the outlet" version for its
DK series. The DK series consists of a range of low volume flowmeters
with glass or metal cones used in many different applications ranging
from inlet pipes to gas chromatography and gas inertisation measurements
in chemistry to the measurement of gases used for anaesthesia in
hospitals. ... |

No end to cold wave, UFM 3030 ultrasonic
measuring device receives type-approval certificate under German law as
cold meter |
| |
|
KROHNE:
The UFM 3030 ultrasonic flowmeter now features type-approval certificate
under German law as a cold meter. This means the device can be used for
commercial purposes and for custody transfer applications. The customer
base for cold meters is predominantly made up of public utilities and
operators of refrigeration networks. The principle behind cold energy
measurement is identical to that of warm energy measurement: In both
cases, a flowmeter along with two temperature sensors and a calculator
are used to bill cold or warm energy. One typical application for cold
energy measurement would be a large refrigerating machine that serves a
business or a building. Air conditioning units use the supplied cold to
cool the surrounding air and return warm water. The cold energy consumed
can be calculated using the flow volume measured by the UFM 3030 and the
difference in temperature between the supply and return. The meters in
existing plants can easily be replaced without changing the existing
application as the UFM 3030 flowmeter is available in a variety of
installation lengths and for a wide range of minimum and permanent
flows. ... |

Direct measurement of volume flows,
Schmidt Technology now presents maintenance-free flow sensors also for
high temperatures |
| |
|
SCHMIDT
Technology: Thermal flow sensors are often used for measurement of
volume or mass flows of gases. An innovative and universal solution by
Schmidt Technology now allows measurements at temperatures up to 350 °C.
Flow velocity and volume flow can be measured according to the thermal
anemometer principle. With this method, a sensor element is continuously
heated to a temperature which is maintained, via a regulating circuit,
at a constant value of about 40 °C above the medium temperature.
Immersed in a medium to be measured, the sensor element cools down by
the air or gas flow. The heat transition from the heating element to the
medium is a measure of the medium's flow velocity. The advantages of
this method lie in the measurability of very low air flows from 0.2 Nm/s
up to very high volume flows, such as exist in compressed air. Moreover,
a thermal flow sensor is very robust, maintenance-free and quick-acting.
New materials resist high temperatures. At high temperatures, the use of
thermal anemometers ... |

OPTISWIRL 4070 put to test |
| |
|
Krohne:
Today, natural gas is one of the most important energy carriers in many
factory processes with constantly increasing sales. In many companies
and plants it is an easy to handle fuel, without which operation is
virtually unimaginable. Although the current price tag of around 40
cents per cubic metre seems very low in and of itself, there are
considerable costs that come to bear in practice: For example, at this
gas price in a DN 100 natural gas pipe at 25 bars of pressure, 35
million euros flow through the pipe per year. In this case, it is worth
investing in precise measuring equipment, especially if internal
balancing of energy consumption is a goal. In this application, a vortex
flowmeter such as the OPTISWIRL 4070 C provides high accuracy at minimal
investment cost. In order to check the characteristics of the OPTISWIRL
when measuring natural gas, KROHNE had a production model tested under
practical conditions at the pigsar testing facility in Dorsten. The high

conform to the new EPA rule (40 CFR Part 98), which mandates that as of
January 2, 2010, companies in the United States that emit more than
25,000 tons/year of CO2 equivalent must report GHG emissions. It is
estimated that approximately 10,000 of the country’s largest businesses
will be affected. Sierra’s GHG Certified mass flow meters provide an
economical way to totalize methane or natural gas burned, enabling the
calculation of CO2 equivalent emissions. Sierra has extensive experience
in producing highly accurate and repeatable mass flow meters for methane
(CH4) as well as N20, SF6, HFC’s, PFC’s and CO2 as called out in the EPA
mandate. “This is really our strong suit,” says Matthew J. Olin,
President of Sierra. “Our customers saw the environmental writing on the
wall some time ago and we have been steadfastly pursuing both
sustainable and profitable industry flow measurement solutions ever
since. To make it easier for our customers facing this measurement
challenge to find the meter they need, we’ve established a dedicated
webpage that features our three most popular GHG Certified mass flow

Sierra Plays Pivotal Role in Biogas
Production Resulting in High Energy Savings for California Wastewater
Treatment Facility |
| |
|
In
the conversion of solid wastes to high-efficiency fuel, digestion plays
a critical first step in producing raw biogas. For Santa Cruz Wastewater
Treatment Facility, Sierra’s Immersible Thermal Mass Flow Meters
deliver critical readings indicating exact digestive status while
controlling the final step of precisely blending the cleaned and
compressed biogas with natural gas. Since 1989 this state-of-the art
wastewater treatment facility, nestled in a shallow canyon in the
coastal city of Santa Cruz, has been leading the way for renewable
energy programs and environmental protection in the West. Santa Cruz
Wastewater generates their own electric power by using
internal-combustion engines which burn a mixture of methane gas produced
by the sewage digestion process and purchased natural gas, producing 7.4
million kwH of electric power per year. Historically, wastewater
treatment facilities around the globe have used differential pressure
devices for their gas measurements. These devices proved to be expensive
to maintain, clogged easily, and required a separate pressure and
temperature transducer and flow computer to deliver true mass flow ... |

Sierra Instruments Partners with Monterey
Bay Research Institute to Protect Marine Life from Ocean Acidification |
| |
|
Since
2005, Dr. Barry and his team at the Monterey Bay Research Institute (MBARI)
have depended upon Sierra mass flow controllers to help conduct
experiments to discover how rapidly increasing atmospheric CO2 levels
are affecting the enormous variety of marine animals in our seas. The
Monterey Bay Research Institute (MBARI) sits on one of the most
spectacular coastlines in the world. But beneath this beauty, the
Monterey Bay and our oceans are changing rapidly due to the influx of
CO2 in our atmosphere. According to Dr. Barry, a Benthic Biologist and
Senior Scientist at MBARI, about 1/3 of human CO2 gas emissions in our
atmosphere are absorbed by the ocean, making the ocean 30% more acidic
than just 100 years ago. “Ocean Acidification” is the new term that has
been coined to describe this process. Smart-Trak® Helps Dr. Barry Create
Different Aquarium: Early in his experiments, Dr. Barry was frustrated
with the performance of the mass flow controllers that controlled gas
inputs to his aquarium tanks. Barry remembers that he would waste
precious research time recalibrating these instruments almost every day
and laboriously changing flow rates ... |

KROHNE presents innovative solutions for
energy measurement at INTERKAMA |
| |
|
KROHNE:
The energy market remains a growth market: Due to the increasing need
for power, there are currently more than 230 new power plants either
under construction or planned worldwide. According to estimates, more
than 800 billion Euros will be spent annually in the power plant
business until 2030. This includes not only new constructions but also
renovations of existing power plants. Measuring technology plays an
important role here: the deciding factor when it comes to the efficiency
of a power plant is the accuracy of the measurements. The more accurate
the measurements, the more efficient the power plant. That translates
into increased profit for the operator. Many countries continue to rely
on nuclear technology to safeguard their future power requirements. For
new constructions and the overhauling of existing plants, KROHNE offers
high temperature ultrasonic measuring devices, variable area flowmeter
and level meters which can be used in steam and water circuits. As the
only manufacturer of measuremnt technology in Germany, KROHNE has all of
the important approvals for the instrumentation of nuclear power plants:
KTA, RCC and the ASME N-stamp. At INTERKAMA 2009, KROHNE presented new
measurements solutions for the power generation market. The portfolio

Flow control per ultrasonic |
| |
|
With
its Type 8081 ultrasonic flow transmitter, Bürkert Fluid Control
Systems launches a completely new transmitter for monitoring or
controlling aqueous solutions. Applications include monitoring the
cooling water during robot welding, injection moulding, die casting, as
well as monitoring coolants in metal cutting applications. Thanks to the
ultrasonic technology, the 8081 is also ideal for all applications where
flow in a highly dynamic range (up to 1:500) needs to be measured with
great accuracy (2% oR + 0.01% FS) using sensors with no moving parts.
This very high dynamic range significantly restricts the types of
suitable
flow sensors. Measurement principle: The measurement principle
behind the 8081 is based on the transit time technique: two piezo-electric
sound converters (transmitter-receiver) transmit and receive the sound
waves. The sound travel times are measured in the nanosecond range. The
crucial point is that the
ultrasonic signal moves faster in the flow
direction than in the opposite direction: the difference in transit time
is directly proportional to the flow speed and can therefore be used to
determine the flow rate. An integrated patented ... |

Safely controlling small amounts of gas,
variable area flowmeters with SIL 2 classification |
| |
|
KROHNE:
In the chemicals industry, measuring gases is often more than simply
measuring the flow: process analysis technology is an important
instrument when indicating quality and when it comes to guaranteeing
process reliability. At the same time, it also helps in process
monitoring and optimisation. To reduce risks for humans and the
environment, certain critical processes must be fitted with safety
functions. To do so, the safety variables such as the probability of
failure and the portion of dangerous and non-dangerous errors must be
calculated for all relevant components and analysed. In the course of
the current standardisation to IEC 61508, process analytics are coming
increasingly into focus, i.e. process analysis systems including
integrated flowmeters are also taken into account when considering the
safety of critical applications. This also includes classification
according to the Safety Integrity Level (SIL) of the measuring devices
used, for example, in the supply lines of gas analysers for flow
monitoring. Specifically for the field of process analytics, KROHNE now
introduces its DK32/34/37 variable area flowmeters with suitability as
per SIL 2 for measuring liquids from 0.2 l/h and gases from 2 l/h. For
larger flow rates, the tried and true variable area classic H250 with

SCHMIDT® Flow-Sensor SS 20.500 for dusty environments |
| |
|
SCHMIDT
Technology presents for the first time the new flow sensor SS 20.500
for application in chemical processes on the international exhibition
ACHEMA in Frankfurt. The measurement of flow velocity in dusty
environments results in particular sensor requirements. Dirt tolerant
design and easy cleaning are of high importance to guarantee measuring
accuracy and reproducibility. Unwanted accumulation of dust and
contamination on the sensor tip can be avoided by an optimized
aerodynamic flow. Therefore, the sensor dumb-bell tip was developed and
the patented system has been proved in many applications. Due to its
extreme wide flow angle of 360° axial and 90° radial direction, the
sensor is easy to position in the air flow and the wide measuring range
of 0.06 up to 35 m/s offers many applications like flow measuring in
dust exhaustions, control of supply and exhaust air or drying processes.
In order to meet the requirements of explosion protection for gas and
dust, the sensor can be delivered in an ATEX version on demand. SCHMIDT
Technology offers this sensor at a very low price of more less than one
thousand Euro. As an option, the sensor tip can be protected by a
special coating and makes the sensor resistant against salt acid,
acetone or sulphuric acid. ... |

SONOTEC:
Saving energy is an important issue for all types of industry operating
with compressed air. The new probes of the SONOAIR series, belonging to
our high-precision measurement devices, are equipped with a lot of new
details. These probes are able to detect the consumption of compressed
air and non-combustible gases as well as leakage losses. There exist
three different device series: Inline probes for pipe diameters of 15 –
50 mm, insertion probes for pipes with a diameter between 50 and 1000 mm
and combined devices. The latter do not only detect the flow rate but
also the temperature and the pressure within the pipe. For on-site
interpretations there exist integrated displays or interfaces for using
a PC or a Laptop. Alternatively, the measured data can also be stored on
a data logger or a memory card. The systems can be installed easily.
They show a high measuring accuracy. The additional software allows

Mass flowmeter especially for the
chemical industry |
| |
|
KROHNE:
In Switzerland, an OPTIMASS 7300 C Tantalum meter doses a highly
aggressive liquid into a column in which a vitamin is manufactured. The
meter measures the mass flow of Toco Toluol in a range of 0 – 7000 kg/h
at a pressure of 1.8 bar. Toco Toluol is an aggressive, acidic solvent.
The liquid has a density of 0.881 kg/l and a temperature of 78 degrees
Celsius. The operator chose the Tantalum version because a mass
flowmeter with extremely high chemical resistance was the only option
considered for this application. A Tantalum meter from a different
manufacturer had been used previously. However, due to problems with
deposits in the device, the customer was looking for a replacement. He
opted for the KROHNE OPTIMASS 7300 C Tantalum because it offers one
crucial advantage: the OPTIMASS features one single, straight measuring
tube, eliminating the need for a flow splitter. Thanks to the straight
tube, the customer was able to select a significantly smaller diameter (DN
25 instead of the DN 50 used previously), thus achieving an increased
flow rate. This prevents the product from being deposited on the inner
wall of the measuring tube. For a long time, there was no suitable
measuring tube material available in the field of Coriolis meters for
measuring highly aggressive or corrosive media. It has only been since
Tantalum has been widely available that a few manufacturers have started
manufacturing Coriolis meters for these applications. However, due to
the twin U-tube format, the products were extremely costly, as in
addition to the measuring tubes both the flange and the flow splitters
were made of Tantalum. Thanks to many years of experience in the
development of Coriolis straight tube meters. ... |

SCHMIDT® Flow-sensor SS 20.260 for
process technology |
| |
|
For
the employment in process technology the latest SCHMIDT® flow
sensor SS 20.260 offers three crucial upgrades compared to his
forerunner. With an expanded measuring range of 0 … 50 m/s the sensor
can be applied for flow rate control in a wide range of systems. Many
processes require the measurement of heated gases and therefore an
enhanced operating temperature. Depending on the configuration of the SS
20.260 it is up to 120 °C. The temperature can be measured with an
additional linear output and no separate sensor is required any more.
The unit is robust due to a chamber in which the sensing element is
protected against impacts. The stainless steel sensor tube is available
in different length and thus can be placed at the correct position
regardless of the size of the duct. Two LED’s indicate the correct
operation or inform about wrong supply voltage or sensor defects.
Applications: Flow measuring in air ducts, volume flow measuring in test
benches, control of combustion air of oil, wood, gas or coal burners,
flow control in cooling or drying constructions. Main technical data:
Immersion sensor with integrated transducer. Use of sensor: Free air and
guided air in ducts from ... |

Error limits of variable area flowmeters:
KROHNE applies new VDI/VDE 3513 guideline |
| |
|
KROHNE:
After 30 years of validity, the definition regarding the accuracy of
variable area flowmeters in the VDI/VDE 3513-2 guideline was revised in
the August 2008 edition. Instead of the accuracy classes, requiring a
formula to calculate the permissible deviation for each measuring point,
all that is now required is the simplified indication of the error limit
which states the maximum permissible percent of deviation from the
current measured value. For example, if the error limit is stated as 1%,
that refers to a constant, permissible measuring error of one percent of
the current measured value. It is only for the beginning of the
measuring range that additional error influences, depending on the
design, will be taken into special consideration. This translates into
considerable change for the manufacturers applying this guideline: From
determining and verifying the new error limits to amending
documentation, calibration protocols and procedure instructions right
down to user information. In the end, however, the simplified definition
meets one of NAMUR's demands as a lobbyist for measurement and
automation technology ... |

Sierra's Smart-Trak® Model 100 Series
Chosen as Part of Key Test Equipment in Measuring CO2 Absorption in
Antarctica |
| |
|
Sierra
Instruments, Inc.: With just days left before Stanford researcher
David Mucciarone would leave on his annual pilgrimage to Antarctica, the
mass flow controller in his carbon analyzer failed. His instrumentation
supplier recommended that he make the transition to Sierra. On a wing
and a prayer, he purchased a Sierra Smart-Trak® Model 100 digital mass
flow controller just prior to boarding ship. He installed it on the trip
down to Antarctica, and it worked, perfectly. But fierce trials lay
ahead as the icebreaker he was travelling on plunged through miles of
thick ice before delivering him to one of the most severe environments
on Planet Earth. Despite the challenges, the Smart-Trak® has never
faltered. “We’re very happy and that’s the bottom line,” says Mucciarone.
No greater challenge faces our planet right now than determining
conclusively how we are impacting the environment and what can be done
to arrest and reverse global warming. To deepen our understanding,
Stanford researcher David Mucciarone spends two months in the Antarctic
every year measuring the breakdown of inorganic carbon in both sea and
ice to learn how much carbon dioxide the ocean can effectively digest.
Based on his success with the carbon analyzer, he plans to employ
additional analyzers on ocean reef and other ecosystems around the
world—each containing a Sierra Smart-Trak® mass flow controller. The

The new OPTISONIC V6: High-accuracy gas
measurement for non-custody transfer |
| |
|
With
the new OPTISONIC V6, KROHNE has launched the next generation of
ultrasonic gas flowmeters for non-custody transfer applications. OPTISONIC V6 sets new standards in accuracy and cost-effectiveness. This
novel flowmeter has been specially developed for applications in the
production of natural gas and for gas suppliers’ city gates and transfer
stations. Its rugged construction makes it ideally suitable for use in
extreme environments, such as offshore platforms. Beneath its strong
housing is a sensitive and highly accurate technology: OPTISONIC V6 has
6 measuring chords, two of which are solely dedicated to diagnostic
functions. Once commissioned, it continuously checks the operating
state. The positioning of the chords in two horizontal parallel planes
compensates for swirl and thus provides reliable measurements even with
turbulent flow profiles. For the first time ever in a gas flowmeter for
non-custody transfer applications, KROHNE has separated the information
on the flow from the information on the diagnostics. This data is
transmitted directly to the user via two separate signal outputs.
Continuous monitoring of the diagnosis data via a web server is being
developed which will permit ... |

Virtual Reference: reduced costs and
increased safety for chemical processes |
| |
|
Many
chemical processes concern highly aggressive media. KROHNE’s
range of electromagnetic flowmeters OPTIFLUX with a high chemical
resistance, is ideally suited to measure aggressive, toxic and abrasive
fluids. Up to now for these applications grounding rings or grounding
electrodes made of exotic thus expensive materials, such as tantalum,
nickel or titanium had to be used. This involves considerable
investments. The possibility to omit grounding rings or –electrodes is
the most economical solution. KROHNE now offers an alternative to
classical grounding: virtual reference. The innovative and patented
concept does not require the installation of grounding rings or
grounding electrodes. The technology company Andritz, headquarted in
Austria, uses KROHNE’s IFC 300 signal converter with the Virtual
Reference option and OPTIFLUX 4000 flow sensors with diameters from DN
10 up to DN 300. The devices are used in lines in which acids are
treated, like for example with high grade steel corrosives. Hydrofluoric
acid, nitric acid and water are blended just before the flowmeter The
acids are measured at an operating temperature of 90 Degrees Celsius,
under a pressure of 3 bar and at a flow velocity ... |

A corrosion resistant Coriolis Mass
Flowmeter |
| |
|
Krohne
has launched a new Tantalum version of its OPTIMASS 7300 Coriolis mass
flowmeter, to handle the highly aggressive and corrosive fluids found in
the chemical industry. The past decade has seen Coriolis flowmeter
technology become the accepted standard in many chemical industries.
However, one area where the technology was challenged was the
measurement of highly aggressive and corrosive fluids. This was due to
the commercial availability of a suitable measuring tube material to
handle these chemicals. Generally, the wall thickness of Coriolis
measuring tubes are significantly less than the associated process
piping, which will tolerate a higher rate of corrosion before failing.
This is an area where wetted material selection for a Coriolis meter is
critical. Tantalum has been used by some Coriolis manufacturers in the
past, but the twin bent tube designs made these expensive. This was due
to the flange, flow splitter as well as the measuring tubes all being
made from Tantalum. ... |

Republic of Singapore Navy Saves Money
With New Ultrasonic Flow Meter From Sierra Instruments |
| |
|
Sierra
Instruments, Inc.: When a ship of the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN)
deployed overseas recently, it did so with a Sierra Innova-Sonic® Model
206 In-Line Ultrasonic Flow Meter installed as a critical element of its
refueling system. In these days of soaring fuel costs, getting what you
pay for is crucial. Since the RSN deploys frequently to all parts of the
world, the navy wanted to be assured that the quantity of the expensive
fuel they are being billed for is in fact what is piped aboard. Before
choosing the Sierra Model 206 In-Line Ultrasonic, an exhaustive search
was undertaken to identify the best meter to “double check” the fuel
amounts received. Impressed with their high accuracy, the RSN first
looked at coriolis meters but found the 2-3” sizes required
prohibitively expensive. They then looked at positive displacement
meters and, while more economical, the navy was concerned about
potential fouling problems plugging up the sensor ports since marine
bunkering fuel can sometimes be very dirty. Electromagnetic flow meters
can get around this problem, but they do not work on fuel oil because it
is non-conductive. The RSN chose Sierra's Innova-Sonic® In-Line

The intelligent alternative for VA
Flowmeters |
| |
|
Bronkhorst
High-Tech B.V., specialists in low flow measurement and control,
have designed a new series of mass flow meters, offering a modern,
economical, digital alternative to conventional VA meters (variable area
meters) also known as purge meters. The new MASSVIEW ® flow meter series
incorporates a digital bar graph of actual gas flow, which is, thanks to
the OLED (organic light emitting diode) technology, clearly visible from
all angles, as well as indicating flow units, gas type and totalised
figures. Also available with an optional in-built needle valve for flow
control duties, it is designed to mimic the straightforward features and
vertical format of the VA meter, but with the considerable added
benefits of an electronic output signal, high measuring accuracy,
virtual independence from gas temperature and pressure variations,
freedom from parallax error and inherently safe construction, with no
fragile glass components in the flow path. MASS-VIEW® operates on the
principle of direct thermal mass flow measurement and is virtually
independent from gas temperature and pressure. It offers best accuracy
of ±1% FS plus ±1% RD, with flow ratings from 0.01 to 200 ln/min (SLM),
and handles pressures up to 10 bar (g) / 150 psi (g). One can easily
select a pre-installed gas (Air, N2, O2, Ar, CO2, CH4 and C3H8) which
eliminates the need to recalibrate for different gases. Power
consumption is low and mechanical process connections are fitted for
straightforward VA meter replacement. ... |

Large order for KROHNE variable area
flowmeters from Kuwait |
| |
|
KROHNE
has received the order to equip 14 oil and gas collection centers
belonging to the Kuwait Oil Company with a total of 432 H250 variable
area flowmeters. The devices will be used for dosing and monitoring the
flow of anti-corrosion fluids in the system. "The decisive factor for
the operating company was the flexibility shown when it came to meeting
customer requirements", said Dirk Landmann, who is managing the project
as the Regional Sales Manager Middle East at KROHNE. For example, the
device software for the digital converter was adapted to
customer-specific wishes. Specially produced floats are used for the
sometimes high viscosities and low flow volumes. Additional requirements
ranged from pressure-resistant enclosed electronic housings permitted
for use in hazardous areas to quality statements through calibration
protocols, pressure tests and material certificates. KROHNE H250
variable area flowmeters are a standard solution in the process industry
due to their robust build and precision. They reliably measure the flow
of gases or liquids using simple means. With over 100,000 devices
produced every year, KROHNE is the world leader in the field of variable
area flow measurement ... |
