The problem-solver, Almost 40 years of
expertise in the sensor sector |

ELTROTEC:
What should we do to ensure an automatic quality control process?
According to Claus Hofmann, Managing Director of Eltrotec Sensor GmbH,
every search for a suitable sensor is based on this question or a
similar one. This approach demonstrates that the solution is the primary
focus at Eltrotec, rather than the product in the catalogue.
Consequently, Eltrotec dispensed with a printed list of available
products many years ago, as customer requirements constantly change. The
specifications of the selected product are no longer the sole focus of a
discussion; users approach the manufacturer with clearly-defined tasks
and expect successful solutions. Eltrotec excels when it comes to
monitoring complex processes using high-quality sensors. Hofmann
describes the difference to standard, high-volume products as follows,
“Whereas the simple interrupter reacts to whether a part is present or
not, our products check whether components are mounted with the correct
alignment and whether the color is right.” Eltrotec uses a wide range of
products to solve the tasks set by its customers. It has five core
product areas − color sensors, distance sensors, light barriers, vision
sensors and ... |

Optical distance sensors with maximal
resolution |
| |
With
the optical distance sensors ODSL 9, Leuze electronic has
extended its family of optical distance sensors and set new benchmarks
for speed, precision, compact design and comfortable operation. The
devices feature high precision up to 0.01 mm and short measurement
times. The new optical laser distance sensors ODSL 9 are designed to be
used in precision applications of mechanical engineering and work
according to the triangulation principle. Like Leuze electronic's other
optical distance sensors, they stand out with high ranges relative to
resolution. The devices are available in two types, one with a
resolution of 0.1 mm and a measurement range of 50 to 450 mm, and the
other with a resolution of 0.01 mm and a measurement range of 50 to 100
mm. Their speed is stunning with a measurement acquisition rate of 500
Hz independent of measurement distance and object characteristics. This
turns the new ODSL 9's into the ideal solution, in particular for moving
applications. The speed can also be used for filtering measurement
values and for preprocessing via statistical functions, allowing even
more precise measurements to be generated. The devices operate largely
independent of object characteristics and are nearly insensitive to
gloss and structures. The temperature stability in effect also
contributes to precision. The compact structure of the ODSL 9's in
relation to their performance is a first for optical distance sensors ... |

Laser Triangulation up to a distance of
2m |
| |
Measurement
technology company Micro-Epsilon has launched a new laser sensor
with a 1m measuring range. The optoNCDT 1710-1000 sensor has a measuring
range that starts from a distance of one meter from the sensor, so
displacement can be measured at a distance of 2m from the sensor. The
sensor comes with an integrated controller in a compact 200mm x 83mm x
48mm housing. The diameter of the light spot is constant across the
complete beam path. With a measuring rate of 2.5kHz, the sensor is
technically superior to existing alternative sensors on the market,
providing 100µm resolution without averaging. 4 … 20 mA, 0 … 10V, RS422
or USB outputs are available. The optoNCDT 1710-1000 is used for
measurement objects that have a high degree of freedom or movement.
Other potential applications are in harsh ambient conditions, where the
sensor has to measure onto the object from a safe distance or if the
target is in a vacuum. The sensor also ... |

Measuring laser sensor for distances up
to 4 m |
| |
Baumer
has recently added the laser distance sensor OADM 250 to its portfolio.
The sensor is based on time of flight technology and covers an operating
distance of 4 m – even on black objects. The OADM 250 complements
Baumer’s broad range of laser distance sensors. Sensors of the same size
working with the triangulation principle reach their limit at distances
of 1 m. This is where the OADM 250 comes in. It is suitable for
applications in which distances between 0.2 m and 4 m have to be
measured. Thanks to a special calibration, the measurement is
independent of the object color and surface properties. The repeat
accuracy (+/- 5 mm), linearity (+/ 20 mm) and short measuring repetition
rate of 10 ms allow precise measurements also on moving objects. The
compact design of the sensor facilitates its integration into the
application, and especially any retro fitting. The integrated standard
alarm output improves the process safety. This output reports if the
sensor cannot interpret the received signal due to too heavy soiling. ... |

Photoelectric sensors with IO-Link –
Sensor intelligence cleverly applied |
| |
Baumer
extends its portfolio of measuring sensors compatible with IO-Link. The
measuring red light distance sensor FADK 14 now offers several new
features that improve the reliablity of your process. Thanks to IO-Link,
the condition of the received signal can be retrieved from the sensor in
different quality levels. This information can be used as a pre-failure
warning. Consequently, photoelectric sensors can solve measurement tasks
even in dusty environments, such as wood processing. Additionally,
IO-Link enables quick and error-free realignment of the sensing range
according to the product in process. The corresponding limits are saved
in the control, thus any errors during product changes are eliminated.
The average value that can be optionally activated enables a higher
resolution and a more stable signal quality especially with a rough
object surface. As a result, IO-Link generates a real added value when
applied with photelectric sensors and these ensure an improved process
reliability as well as ... |

Novel frame adapter, mounting sensors
with a double click |
| |
Baumer
introduces a new clever accessory for its Series 14 photoelectric
sensors: a novel frame adapter. This plastic adapter allows for a simple
installation of the sensors without the use of screws or tools. They are
mounted with just two clicks – quickly and efficiently. In many
applications several photoelectric sensors are employed along a conveyer
belt. In these cases it is time-consuming to screw and adjust every
single sensor. Additionally, special mounting angles are often
necessary. Now a recess in the steel sheet of 1.75 x 5.4 cm is
sufficient to install a Series 14 sensor with the frame adapter. The
sensor only has to be snapped into the adapter and together this unit is
inserted into the cut-out. Two plastic clamps secure the adapter in the
cut-out and the sensor is mounted tightly and securely. This
installation saves the user time and he can forego additional, often
expensive mounting angles. Likewise, the sensor cannot be re-adjusted or
shifted accidentally. Nevertheless, when the sensor needs to be serviced
it can be dismounted quickly. The unique frame adapter fits all Series
14 sensors from Baumer, such as diffuse sensors with background
suppression, retro-reflective sensors, or the new LED-based distance
sensors ... |

Tightly packed distance measurement |
| |
|
Baumer
Electric: Often there is only very limited space available for
sensors and actuators in apparatuses and mobile devices. The new
distance measuring Series IWFM 08 inductive sensors address exactly
these applications. With their compact outer dimension of only 4.7 x 8 x
16 mm they fit into the tiniest slots. Thanks to the integrated 0… 10 V
output, the sensor can be connected directly to the analog inputs of a
control system, without using a measuring board or processing unit. The
resulting reduction of hardware and installation costs are obvious.
Another attribute that characterizes the IWFM 08 is its robustness. The
metal housing prevents damage during installation or operations to a
large extent, which positively influences the maintenance costs in the
long term. Due to the high linearity and repeat accuracy, the IWFM 08
records linear movements of up to 2 mm with high precision. The
described characteristics have already proved to be of value with
existing Baumer sensors used in robotic grippers ... |

The FHDK 04 optical miniature sensor provides a compelling argument with
very high efficiency background suppression. The Baumer developers were
able to accommodate this sensor in a housing measuring only 4 x 6 x 45
mm. With a bracket for profiles and only one groove plate, this sensor
can be secured in any commercially available extrusion frame. Several
sensors may be operated next to one another without any mutual optical
interference. In addition, the IO-Link communications standard is
supported. Ultrasonic sensors ... |

Measuring large distances using
time-of-flight measurement |
| |
|
Micro
Epsilon has extended its product range with new laser sensors. In
addition to the existing time-of-flight sensors there are four new
complementary models. Under the names optoNCDT ILR 1181, 1182, 1183 and
1191, these sensors provide new approaches to solving automation tasks.
The 80 Series functions according to the phase comparison principle,
whereby a precise distance measurement is possible. They achieve a
measuring range of 30m for use on diffuse reflecting surfaces and 150m
when using a special reflector, which guides the laser pulse back into
the optical system for large measuring distances. The optoNCDT ILR 1191
operates according to the “Time-of-Flight” principle and achieves a
measuring range of 3,000m with a reflector; a measuring range of 300m is
possible without using the reflector. With a linearity of between ±3mm
and ±5mm or ±20mm to ±0mm for the 1191 series and a repeat accuracy of
less than 0.5mm, these sensors are ideal for precision measurement
tasks. ... |

Optical distance sensors with light spot
size selection from S to XL |
| |
|
With
its ODS 96B, Leuze electronic is offering an optical distance sensor
designed for wide-ranging different fields of application. Exceptionally
fast measurement cycles make these distance sensors the fastest in their
class, permitting measurement applications in highly dynamic processes.
A new version has now been launched which permits the user to select any
optional light spot size between S and XL when using laser light
sources. ODS 96B optical laser distance sensors from Leuze electronic
work on the basis of the triangulation principle, using the very latest
CCD technology for evaluation. They are designed for continuous distance
measurements, position monitoring and for dynamic product gauging
applications of the kind required on conveyor lines. They cover a
measurement range of between 60 and 2000 millimetres. Performing
cyclical measurements within intervals of just milliseconds, they are
able to pick up dynamic processes up to five times faster than
comparable products. This means a more finely meshed measurement grid,
ensuring more precise and detailed information with more stable measured
values and greater process efficiency. Alongside high-speed measurement
processes, the ODS 96B also offers extreme accuracy, a resolution of 0.1
mm and repeat accuracy of 0.5%. One of the most striking features of
this optical distance sensor is its bright, easily legible OLED display

Push-through guard using measuring
sensors in automatic high-bay warehouses |
| |
|
Leuze:
In high-bay warehouses, protection against accidental push-through of
pallets is generally provided by mechanical solutions involving
elaborate steel constructions. With its ODS 96B optical distance
sensors, Leuze electronic is offering a more economical and technically
superior solution to address this important safety requirement. Not only
is the effort and expense involved in equipping each individual rack
compartment with an effective mechanical push-through safeguard
enormous, but the impact generated by dynamic loading processes exerts a
negative influence on the rack system itself. This can be prevented
initially by providing a compartment occupied check using suitable
sensor systems, which monitors whether storage surfaces really are
unoccupied, so preventing pallets already in place from being pushed
backwards and dropping out of the rack. However, an additional and
urgent problem situation is created by pallets which are skewed or
offset. During highly dynamic operating processes, system-specific
tolerances can be quickly exceeded, resulting in the forks of the rack
handling system displacing already positioned pallets when performing
inward and outward movements – with potentially disastrous consequences.
ODS 96B optical distance sensors from Leuze electronic provide an
economical and effective push-through guard which at the same time
ensures maximum care of the rack system itself by preventing mechanical
loads caused by impacting pallets. Optical laser distance sensors ODS
96B from Leuze ... |

Leuze
electronic is extending its range of optical distance sensors to
include additional affordable variants. The previously presented ODSL 8
with teach-in function in a format of just 38 x 48 x 15 mm is now also
available with a resolution of 0.03 mm and a measurement range of 25 to
45 mm. Alongside its high resolution, a repeat accuracy of 0.2 % is
fundamental to its object measurement precision. Equipped with an
analogue current or voltage output, the ODSL 8 offers scope for simple
link-up to different evaluation units and control systems. The sensor is
also fitted with two push-pull switching outputs for precise object
recognition. A user-friendly rotary switch at the device permits simple
teach-in of the analogue output operating range of 1-10 V or 4-20 mA,
and also of the switching outputs. With its small light spot of just 1
mm, this sensor option also delivers precise measurements of small
components and structured surfaces. The portfolio of ODSL 8 compact
distance sensors is supplemented by other variants with measurement
ranges from 200 mm and 500 mm for long-distance measurements. ... |
