Z-Height Measurement with Capacitive and Eddy-Current Sensors

Z-Height Measurement with Capacitive and Eddy-Current SensorsLion Precision: Z-height measurement, or any measurement of critical position in one axis, is a common need in many industries. Many engineers have struggled with trying to get an accurate measurement of sufficient resolution while coping with design requirements and implementation problems caused by limited space, temperature changes, vacuum, target surface interference, and damage to measurement probes resulting from incidental contact with the target. Capacitive and eddy-current noncontact displacement sensors are becoming a standard technology for these applications because of their small size, flexibility, ease of use, high resolution, and robust design. Capacitive sensors and eddy-current sensors can also be easily customized to fit in specific applications. Technologies: Many technologies have been applied to these measurements, each with its own set of challenges. Contact gauging can damage target surfaces. Optical gauging can suffer from thermal sensitivity, inconsistent reflectivity of the target material, and may be difficult to fit in the space required. Some capacitive technologies can suffer damage to internal electronics if the end of the probe touches a grounded surface. Lion Precision capacitive and eddy-current sensors are robust, thermally compensated ...

Displacement sensors with a blue laser

Displacement sensors with a blue laserMicro-Epsilon presents at first a triangulation sensor that utilise Blue Laser technology. In numerous applications, Blue Laser sensors are superior to standard sensors that use a red laser diode. When measuring on metals, particularly annealing metals and organic materials such as wood, skin, foodstuffs, veneers, etc., the wavelength of the blue-purple laser offers significant benefits. In contrast to a red laser, the reduced wavelength of the blue laser light does not penetrate the measuring object. The blue laser generates a minimal laser point on the surface and therefore offers stable, precise results on measuring objects that are normally considered as critical. The design of triangulation sensors with Blue Laser technology is a complete re-design. The displacement sensors are equipped with new high-end lenses, new intelligent laser control and evaluation algorithms. Laser sensors with Blue Laser illustrate the ongoing development of numerous standard commercially available laser sensors. For example, the optoNCDT 1700 industrial standard laser sensor. ...

Micronas presenting new generation of Hall sensors for extended position measurement

Hall Effect sensorsMicronas, a leading supplier of cutting-edge sensor and IC system solutions for automotive and industrial electronics, presents a new generation of Hall sensors for linear position measurement with their HAL 38xy family. The HAL 38xy family is firmly based on the 3D Hall technology which features two vertical and one horizontal Hall plate. Accompanying Micronas’ market launch of this new generation is a first spin-off, the HAL 3855. The HAL 3855 is strictly speaking a 2D position sensor, as it needs only two components of a magnetic field in order to enable a linear position measurement. If an axially magnetized magnet is moved parallel to the surface of the sensor housing, the sensor detects every change in the magnetic field components By and Bz. The internal digital signal processing of the HAL 3855 puts the measured values in relation to each other and so delivers the displacement information at the output side by way of an analog signal. ...

Simple diameter measurement of housing bores

With the idiamCONTROL measurement system from Micro-Epsilon, measuring the inner diameter of drilled holes in the housings of double worm extruders is now much easier. This instrument has been specifically designed for checking bore diameters by using non-contact capacitive displacement sensors. To measure the diameters, the sensor unit is inserted into the housing bore of the extruder and pushed as far towards the upstream end as possible. The measuring technology gauges the clearance to the housing bore wall using non-contact distance sensors positioned opposite one another. The distance signals from the sensors are converted in the controller to provide diameter values. These diameter values can be recorded by turning the cross rollers through 40°, for a total of six measuring tracks in a double worm extruder. Guide bolts, which run along the saddle of the two bores, ensure that the measuring tracks are adhered to exactly. While retracting the sensor unit, the evaluation unit records and stores the diameter measurements and the distance covered. Data transfer to a PC for archiving and graphical evaluation purposes is performed by using an RS232/USB interface ...

NASA Stennis Space Center Awards Sensor Development Contract to Lion Precision

Lion Precision, a leading manufacturer of high-performance displacement sensors, was awarded a Cooperative Agreement with NASA’s Stennis Space Center to develop a smart sensor and the associated communication protocols to monitor valve position and wear. The eddy-current displacement sensors will monitor valves responsible for the flow of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen in rocket engine test cells. Sensor measurements and sensor health information will be transmitted using MTConnect communication protocol. Development of the system will require the expansion of MTConnect to include new XML tags for sensor measurement and health parameters. Don Martin, president of Lion Precision, is the chairperson of the Sensors Working Group for MTConnect. Rocket engine tests are very expensive to perform. Failures during the test require scrapping and later repeating the test at great expense. To help prevent failures, the sensors will monitor the condition of critical valves. The sensors will provide a precise measurement of the final seated position of the valve when closed. That position verifies that the valve is closed and also indicates valve wear. This data will inform operators when a valve requires maintenance rather than waiting until it fails or performing costly, unnecessary maintenance at a predefined time interval. The sensors will also monitor their own functionality and report any apparent malfunctions of the sensing system. ...

Understanding Capacitive Position Sensors

MicroSense, LLC: Introduction to Capacitive Displacement Sensors: Capacitance sensing is a high precision, high bandwidth, non contact displacement measurement method which has been in common use for over 50 years. This white paper describes various characteristics of capacitive sensing, principles of operation, performance characteristics and the fixturing of capacitive sensors. Capacitive sensors, when used for high resolution displacement and position measurement, are also commonly known as cap gages (or gauges), since some of the early commercial applications for capacitive sensors involved dimensional gaging of precision components. Characteristics of Capacitive Sensors: Capacitive sensors are used to make non contact displacement measurements with high precision, very rapidly over modest ranges. Non Contact: Capacitive sensing is a non contact measurement method. Because the system never makes contact with the part there are no witness marks, parts distortion or probe wear. In addition, because the system is non contact, high volume measurements are facilitated because there is no sensor cycle time. High Resolution: Only a laser interferometer offers similar resolution to a capacitive sensor. Capacitive sensors are used in ...

Eddy current sensors in tribology testers

Eddy current sensors from Micro-Epsilon are once again being used in a new high-performance test system at the Institute for Tribology at the Clausthal Technical University. The new tester, which is currently under construction, will be used to examine the tribological, flow mechanics and rotor dynamic processes of highly loaded sliding bearings at maximum circumferential speeds of the shaft. Based on previous positive experiences with Micro-Epsilon eddy current sensors used on existing testers for examining hydrodynamic radial plain bearings or plain bearings with particularly high loads, eddyNCDT series sensors will also be used in the new tester. In doing so, the shaft reaches circumferential speeds of up to 200m/s; conventional test systems achieve a maximum of 120m/s. The position of the test bearing housing and the relative movement between the rotor and the test bearing is detected in the tester using eddy current displacement sensors. The bearing gap of the plain bearing between bearing surface and rotor is also measured using eddy current sensors. Or this, 22 sensor channels will be integrated in the test structure. Miniature eddyNCDT sensors with 0.5mm measuring range are used due to their high cut-off frequency and high resolution. Another key criterion is the sensor’s small installation footprint. Therefore, measuring points for very tight installation requirements are possible without requiring any disruptive modifications to the test design. High environmental compatibility is also a key reason for selecting eddy current sensors: oil or water in the measuring gap ...
