Capacitive Displacement Probes Expand Measurement Ranges and
Resolutions |
| |
To
accommodate small spaces and larger measurement ranges,
Lion Precision has added to their
capacitive probe selection. New probes are available in
diameters of 3 mm, 18 mm and 25 mm. In addition to new
sizes, the probes use new design parameters that further
improve long-term stability, resolution and temperature
drift. On the small end of the spectrum, the new 3mm
diameter probes provide measurement ranges as small as
10 µm with resolutions less than 1 nanometer. The tiny
probes are only 15 mm long with right-angle or axial
cable exits for squeezing into very tight spaces. On the
larger end, the new 18 mm and 25 mm probes provide
measurement ranges as large as 12.5 mm while still
maintaining resolutions as low as 125 nm. “New design
approaches and new construction techniques have enabled
us to create these smaller and larger probes while
maintaining the high performance people expect from our
equipment,” says Lion Precision president, Don Martin.
He added, “What we learned will now trickle down into
our existing probe offerings giving improved performance
across the entire line ... |

| Space-saving and flexible capacitive sensor
for reliable object detection |
| |
Baumer
launches the new CFDK 25 capacitive sensor for the
reliable detection of arbitrary objects in confined
spaces. The sensor is characterized by its very flat
housing and versatile mounting options. The very flat
housing design with a height of only 6 mm allows easy
installation e.g. beneath a low-rise conveyor belt. The
capacitive sensor can be countersunk flush and therefore
needs much less space than photoelectric sensors or
ultrasonic sensors. To further facilitate the
integration of the capacitive sensor into machines and
facilities, Baumer offers a matching innovative mounting
frame. Using this frame, the capacitive sensor can be
installed not only with screws but also with cable ties,
Velcro fastener or glue. The capacitive sensor can be
removed from and re-installed into the mounting frame
easily and without tools (snap-out/snap-in). Various
fixed sensing distances from 2 to 25 mm supersede a
potentiometer and turn the CFDK 25 into a plugand-play
solution. In order to guarantee a long product life also
under demanding conditions, the housing of the
capacitive sensor is made of the robust plastic Polyamid

Z-Height Measurement with Capacitive and Eddy-Current Sensors |
| |
Lion
Precision: Z-height measurement, or any measurement of
critical position in one axis, is a common need in many
industries. Many engineers have struggled with trying to get an
accurate measurement of sufficient resolution while coping with
design requirements and implementation problems caused by
limited space, temperature changes, vacuum, target surface
interference, and damage to measurement probes resulting from
incidental contact with the target. Capacitive and eddy-current
noncontact displacement sensors are becoming a standard
technology for these applications because of their small size,
flexibility, ease of use, high resolution, and robust design.
Capacitive sensors and
eddy-current sensors can also be easily customized to fit in
specific applications. Technologies: Many technologies have been
applied to these measurements, each with its own set of
challenges. Contact gauging can damage target surfaces. Optical
gauging can suffer from thermal sensitivity, inconsistent
reflectivity of the target material, and may be difficult to fit
in the space required. Some capacitive technologies can suffer
damage to internal electronics if the end of the probe touches a
grounded surface. Lion Precision capacitive sensors and eddy-current
sensors are robust, thermally ... |

| Capacitive gap sensor |
| |
The
new capacitive sensors from
Micro-Epsilon capaNCDT CSG are
specially developed to measure gap width. Sensor
electrodes are applied to the top front and back
on a circuit board that has a width of 20cm.
Using the sensor electrodes and the differential
method, the gap width can be determined very
precisely while moving the sensor into the gap.
A special feature is the sensor’s flexible
probe. This also enables the capacitive sensor
to be used in applications where the measurement
object is difficult to access. Using the
capaNCDT CSG, gaps of 0.9mm up to 4.9mm can be
measured at a resolution of up to 90nm. However,
metal objects and a clean measurement gap are
required for these capacitive sensors. In terms
of the electronics for the capaNCDT 6500,
signals of both electrodes are immediately
calculated with the gap width. Furthermore, the
sensor can be replaced or connected to any other
electronics supplied by Micro-Epsilon. With the
same sensor dimensions, the new capaNCDT CSE
offers a measuring range that is 2.5 times
larger. As the CSE capacitive sensors are
equipped with a shielding electrode which is set
back, the sensor dimensions are considerably
smaller. Therefore, these capacitive sensors
show significant benefits while also offering
the same measuring range. Since the capacitive

from RECHNER was originally
designed to cope with the problems of very
adhesive products. It turns out that these
capacitive sensors have excellent
characteristics for general use in level
control. Typically they overcome the problems
caused by products sticking to the sensor and

ZMDI ZSSC3122 capacitive sensor signal conditioner benefits MEMS,
industrial, harsh environments especially battery powered applications |
| |
|
ZMD
AG (ZMDI), a global
supplier of energy-efficient analog and mixed-signal
solutions for automotive, industrial, and medical
applications, has expanded its family of capacitive
sensor signal conditioners (SSCs) with the addition of
the wide-dynamic-range ZSSC3122 cLite device. New design
technology allows the integrated circuit to deliver
14-bit resolution and 0.25% full-scale-output accuracy.
Capacitive Sensor Benefits and Applications:
Capacitive sensors are often favored for their small
size and lower power consumption over resistive bridge
sensors. The ZSSC3122 supports this view with an
operating current as low as 60uA over the entire voltage
range of 1.8V to 5.5V. A built-in sleep mode lowers the
current consumption to <1uA for temperatures up to 85°C,
making the ZSSC3122 an excellent choice for all
low-power battery applications. The device is also ideal
for MEMS sensing elements, such as
pressure sensors for hydraulic control systems,
humidity sensors and
liquid level gauges. Capacitive sensors do not touch
or make direct contact with the system being sensed,
making them a preferred option for industrial linear and
angular position sensors and contactless
potentiometers, where harsh or explosive environments

Capacitive fill level sensor for soiled media |
| |
|
Baumer’s
new CFAK 12 capacitive fill level sensor detects conductive liquids
while suppressing dirt particles and detergent residues. When detecting
fill levels in soiled media, conventional capacitive sensors are
susceptible to suspended solids that influence their switching behavior
in a negative manner. The new CFAK 12 is the smart remedy for these
applications. Incorporated into a grounded metal basin it monitors the
fill levels of water and water-based fluids. Thanks to its special
housing design and the plane plastic surface, dirt particles hardly
adhere to the sensor. Therefore, the cleaning effort is drastically
reduced compared to conventional solutions. Even if dirt should adhere
to the sensor the integrated compensating electrode makes sure that it
is suppressed and the fill level is still detected precisely.
Additionally, the capacitive sensor is extremely resistant to detergents
and suppresses their residues reliably. Amongst others, the capacitive
fill level sensor is applied in railway lavatories ... |

Combination sensor system for
single-sided thickness measurement |

Sensor
specialist Micro-Epsilon is relaunching its proven combination
sensor, the KS5. The new KSH5 has been developed even further and now
combines a capacitive sensor and an eddy current sensor with additional
integrated temperature measurement, in a single, compact sensor module.
The combination sensor is used for single-sided thickness measurement of
plastics. Both sensors measure without making contact with the target
and measure continuously in one axis on the same measuring spot. This
means that the combination sensor offers significant benefits when
compared with conventional designs in which multiple sensors are
positioned adjacent to one another. The sensor has a measuring range of
5mm and for the first time has been produced using a unique ECT
production technology recently developed by Micro-Epsilon. Even higher
resolution , very high temperature stability and longer service life
combined with a very compact sensor housing are just some of the
benefits that customers will see from this new technology. A special,
optimised combination connector is provided, which means that output
signals from temperature measurements, the capacitive sensor and the
eddy current sensor can be transmitted in a single connection ... |

Understanding Capacitive Position Sensors |
| |
|
MicroSense, LLC: Introduction to Capacitive Displacement Sensors:
Capacitance sensing is a high precision, high bandwidth, non contact
displacement measurement method which has been in common use for over 50
years. This white paper describes various characteristics of capacitive
sensing, principles of operation, performance characteristics and the
fixturing of capacitive sensors. Capacitive sensors, when used for high
resolution displacement and position measurement, are also commonly
known as cap gages (or gauges), since some of the early commercial
applications for capacitive sensors involved dimensional gaging of
precision components. Characteristics of Capacitive Sensors: Capacitive
sensors are used to make non contact displacement measurements with high
precision, very rapidly over modest ranges. Non Contact: Capacitive
sensing is a non contact measurement method. Because the system never
makes contact with the part there are no witness marks, parts distortion
or probe wear. In addition, because the system is non contact, high
volume measurements are facilitated because there is no sensor cycle
time. High Resolution: Only a laser interferometer offers similar
resolution to a capacitive sensor. Capacitive sensors are used in ... |

Capacitive Sensors, Capacitive Position
Sensors and Their Applications |
| |
|
Physik
Instrumente (PI): Many application areas today require the highest
of measurement accuracies, with resolutions in the nanometer or
subnanometer realm. Examples range from semiconductors and biotechnology
through quality assurance and automotive to metrology and microscopy.
Even in “normal” machining, more and more automated tasks require
high-accuracy positioning, which means that suitably high-precision
measuring equipment is essential. This places high demands on the
sensors used. In addition, the sensors must be as easy to integrate in
the application as possible, and usually must also exhibit excellent
dynamic performance. The accuracy and repeatability of the sensors used
is a major determinant of the performance of any positioning system.
Anyone requiring the maximum possible accuracy—in the nanometer or even
picometer realm—will be using capacitive sensors. One specialist in the
area of nanopositioning systems manufacture is PI (Physik Instrumente),
a company which has long been a moving force in the development of
high-precision capacitive sensors, capacitive position sensors, mostly
for use in its own products. Today, capacitive sensors, capacitive
position sensors of various different types, some with resolutions down
into the subnanometer realm, have their own place in the product
palette. Capacitive sensor metrology has more to offer than just high
accuracy: The sensors provide non-contact measurements of the actual
position of the moved object directly—accuracy, stability and bandwidth
are substantially better than those obtained with conventional LVDT or
SGS sensors. ... |

miniature size these level switches can be perfectly integrated into OEM
devices. The CLW sensor can be mounted to the outside of a container or
vessel and is able to measure through almost any non-metallic wall
material. The level switch is highly flexible and can be easily
calibrated to measure to the desired levels, media and application
set-up. The CLW series achieves a very high accuracy and reliability due
to an additional reference electrode which compensates for all changes
in ambient environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity.

Capacitive sensors with new technology |
| |
|
The
latest range of capacitive sensors from Micro-Epsilon is based on
a completely new technology. A special ceramic substrate provides the
capaNCDT CSH (Hybrid) sensors with extreme temperature stability. New
sensor geometries are also possible which enable the production of a
sensor with a height of 4mm. These flat sensors are called capaNCDT CSH-FL.
Using two drilled holes on the sensor, the flat sensors can be mounted
quickly and easily; as before, the cylindrical sensors can be mounted by
clamping The sensors are also available for use in ultra-high vacuums (UHV)
and clean rooms where, for example, freedom from contamination of the
materials is also important. Due to the integrated cable on the sensor
side, there are two significant benefits: installation space is
significantly reduced and the risks arising from an additional plug
connector, e.g. accidental detachment, are eliminated. The new
technology and the modular design of the sensor enable Micro-Epsilon to
respond very quickly to customer requirements. The CSH sensors are
currently available with measuring ranges between 0.2mm and 1.2mm. Other
measuring ranges are being developed. The hybrid sensors ... |

issues. The device is highly flexible and the user can easily calibrate
the sensor to measure to the desired levels, media and application
set-up. The CLC series achieves a very high accuracy and reliability due
to an additional reference electrode which compensates for all changes
in ambient environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. As
an optional safety feature the sensor can be supplied with an extra
sensing pad to detect if a container is actually present or not. The CLC
sensor offers an analog voltage output as well as a digital interface.

Capacitive Sensors - Aggressive media
safely detected |
| |
|
Baumer
Electric: In quite a number of fill level applications there are
liquids to be detected which require sensor housings and media
containers to be made of materials of strongly improved properties due
to their chemical reactivity. The new Baumer capacitive sensors provide
interesting new approaches to many of these challenging cases. Since the
sensors' electrical field of detection is capable of penetrating through
insulating materials such as plastics, glass, cardboard etc., non
invasive detection of both liquids and solid matter is possible from the
outside. Capacitive sensors can therefore monitor fill levels in closed
containers whilst being attached to the outside container wall. Compared
to sensing methods requiring direct contact with matter, there are a
number of advantages. On one hand, this approach provides an excellent
protection for the sensor itself, which assures a long live expectancy
as well as a high degree of process safety. On the other hand, the
medium to be detected or monitored cannot be contaminated by the
sensor’s housing. The detection behaviour of capacitive sensors is
influenced by the dielectric constant of the surrounding materials.
Certain limitations apply when detecting liquids and objects exhibiting
a low dielectric constant using the existing, flush-mounted capacitive
sensors ... |

Inductive High Temperature Sensors - Hot
Heads ... |
| |
|
Baumer
Electric: Baumer’s IFRH series of inductive high temperature sensors
have been designed for operating temperatures ranging from -25 °C to
+180 °C. The two part proximity switches intended for flush front face
installation are available in M8, M12 and M18 designs with chromium
nickel steel housings. With an overall length of a mere 30 mm, the M8
sensor is ideal for installation under conditions of limited space.
Depending on the housing size, the nominal switching distance ranges
from a minimum of 1 mm up to a maximum of 5 mm. An FEP jacketed cable
allows the processing electronics to be separated from the actual sensor
head and to thus be easily and protectively installed outside the hot
range. The operating voltage range lies between 10...30 VDC, while the
protection class is IP 67. In addition, Baumer also offers capacitive
high temperature sensors for detecting nonmetallic components in hot
environments. ... |

New capacitive measurement system with
sub-nanometre resolution |
| |
|
Only
a short time after introducing its new single-channel measurement
systems, Micro-Epsilon is now offering a new capacitive multi-channel
measurement system, which guarantees extremely high resolution and
accuracies. According to the manufacturer, the new capaNCDT500 provides
a resolution in the range of hundredths of a nanometre and supersedes
the existing capaNCDT600 series. An Ethernet port with 24-bit resolution
is available, so that data obtained can be output as error-free as
possible. The new system is modular in its design and can accept up to
eight measuring channels, depending on requirements. For this, the
controllers, in all the major European card formats, are inserted in the
housing. A version with an integrated preamplifier, as well as one with
an external preamplifier, are available, which enables cable lengths of
up to 20m between sensor and controller. The sensors operate virtually
independent of temperature and so can be used at ... |

Level measurement in cavities with only
4mm diameter |
| |
|
SNT
Sensortechnik AG: Many industrial applications can be solved with
the miniature ultrasonic sensors series UPS, where optical, inductive or
capacitive sensors might have problems with detection. Furthermore with
the UPS sensors with analogue output a precise distance or level
measurement can be realized, with a precision of approx. 0.3mm, with
0…10V or 4…20mA output. The special version “FOCUS Beam” (center on
picture) has a focusing device for the ultrasound. It has been
particularly successful in various applications. It proved its advantage
in the detection through very narrow openings. Since the FOCUS Beam does
not have any disadvantageous blind range, one can place it very close
(few millimeters only) to the opening of a cavity. There the beam is
only 3mm wide in diameter. This allows e.g. to measure the level in only
4mm wide cavities with an accuracy of only few 1/10mm. The other special
version "CP" (Chemical Protection, right on picture) has a PTFE
diaphragm with a protective sleeve. This can be used as a level sensor ... |
