Epson Toyocom Develops New Series of Gyro-sensors for Vehicle Attitude
Sensing |
| |
Epson Toyocom Corporation,
the leader in crystal devices, announced the development of a
new series of compact, reliable gyro-sensors (angular rate
sensors) capable of withstanding temperatures as high as 125°C.
The new XV-9000 series of gyro-sensors is designed for vehicle
attitude sensing applications in the automotive industry. More
and more vehicles are coming standard-equipped with driving
safety devices as calls for safer vehicles grow louder. The
United States, Europe, and Japan have all introduced legislation
mandating that vehicles be equipped with active safety systems
such as electronic stability control (ESC) to detect skidding
and correct vehicle attitude. In addition, manufacturers are
increasingly installing passive safety features, such as
rollover protection systems that detect vehicle rollovers and
side curtain airbags. These safety systems, which have to be
able to correctly sense skidding, rollovers, and other hazardous
vehicular behavior, are driving growth in demand for
gyro-sensors that detect changes in attitude by measuring
angular velocity. The sensors in the new XV-9000 series are
designed to meet these needs. By applying QMEMS*1 technology to
fabricate crystal sensing elements in an original hammerhead
structure, Epson Toyocom was able to realize very small sensors
that exhibit stable characteristics over a wide temperature
range (-40 to +125°C). In addition, Epson Toyocom increased
sensor reliability by providing a diagnostic circuit that
detects failures at any given time and at startup. The sensors
have also achieved excellent vibration resistance and shock
survivability by optimizing the sensing elements and their
support structure. ... |

| New optical linear array from Melexis
turns the spotlight to real-time fuel quality sensing |
| |
Melexis:
Near IinfraRed (NIR) spectroscopy using the
company’s 3rd generation of Optical Linear
Array, the MLX75306 enables real-time fuel
quality sensing for engine management. Working
with petrochemical and other researchers, the
company has decoded the optical fingerprint of
different types of fuel available in the market.
A cost effective and robust spectrum analyzer is
realized with LED light, optical filters and the
MLX75306. Measurement of fuel type, mixtures and
contaminants provides engine control systems an
important new input for optimizing efficiency
and emissions. Refined fuel quality analysis
capabilities are useful for several reasons. At
present, automotive OEMs supply different
specification engines to different continents
because of variances in fuel quality. Direct
molecular fuel analysis offers vehicle
manufacturers the ability to develop a single,
real-time programmable engine that is suitable
for all regions, as opposed to the current
situation whereby engines are developed per fuel
region. More accurate fuel analysis techniques
can also be used to respond to new and emerging
fuel types like Flex Fuel. As fuel price rises
globally, fuel adulteration practices have
become common in some countries, providing
additional justification for technologies that
can identify the compounds and concentration of
certain additives and, if necessary, alert the
driver. Increasingly tight emissions regulations
also support the provision of better information
about a fuel’s intrinsic quality as it can be
used to help the engine run in an optimal and
therefore more emissions-friendly way. ... |

Micronas set to enlarge its 3D Hall sensor family |
| |
Micronas,
a leading supplier of cutting-edge sensor and IC system
solutions for automotive and industrial electronics, invests in
the development of new hall sensors of the HAL 36xy and HAL 38xy
families and so enlarges its product portfolio in the field of
multi-dimensional magnetic field detection. Unlike standard
magnet field measurements which only capture and detect magnetic
fields whose field lines run orthogonally to the chip surface,
the HAL 36xy and HAL 38xy sensor families with their additional
vertical Hall boards also detect magnetic field components of
the magnetic field running parallel to the surface. The vertical
Hall boards have the advantage that they can be made using a
standard CMOS process without additional post-processing and
that they are not influencing the magnetic field itself. The
members of the Hall sensor families based on 3D Hall technology
all feature temperature-compensated Hall boards with cycled
offset compensation, A/D transformers, digital signal
processing, a push-pull output, an EEPROM with redundant memory
cells and write protection for the calibration data and the data
registry information, a digital programming interface as well as
additional switching components realizing diagnosis functions
and so enhancing the safety of the aggregate system such as
temperature and voltage monitoring (under and overvoltage),
open-circuit detection and overload protection in all
connections. Additional functions such as an EEPROM self-test
during system start can be activated by the customer. The
sensors of the HAL 36xy family detect the magnetic field
components in the X and Y level in three-dimensional space ... |

measurement |
| |
|
Micronas,
a leading supplier of cutting-edge sensor and IC system
solutions for
automotive and industrial electronics, presents a
new generation of
Hall sensors for
linear position measurement with their HAL 38xy
family. The HAL 38xy family is firmly based on the 3D
Hall technology which features two vertical and one
horizontal Hall plate. Accompanying Micronas’ market
launch of this new generation is a first spin-off, the
HAL 3855. The HAL 3855 is strictly speaking a 2D
position sensor, as it needs only two components of
a magnetic field in order to enable a linear position
measurement. If an axially magnetized magnet is moved
parallel to the surface of the sensor housing, the
sensor detects every change in the magnetic field
components By and Bz. The internal digital signal
processing of the HAL 3855 puts the measured values in
relation to each other and so delivers the displacement
information at the output side by way of an analog
signal. ... |

SHT21
Humidity Sensor – AEC-Q100
(AEC-Q100 automotive standard) reliability confirmed again |
| |
|
Sensirion’s
new SHT21 humidity and temperature sensor has now been qualified in
accordance with the AEC-Q100 automotive standard. This confirms the
outstanding reliability, stability and robustness of the sensor, which
has been in regular production since April 2010. Successful AEC-Q100
(AEC-Q100 automotive standard) qualification is remarkable in the sense that humidity sensors, unlike
fully encapsulated electronic components, are constantly exposed to
their surroundings and sensitive to ambient conditions. During the
qualification process, the SHT21 was put through the series of tests
specified by AEC-Q100 (AEC-Q100 automotive standard). In the High Temperature Operating Lifetime (HTOL)
test, the sensor was operated at 125°C for 1000 hours to test its aging
characteristics. The 96-hour Unbiased Highly Accelerated Stress Test (UHST)
at 130°C and 85% relative humidity confirmed the sensor’s stress
resistance. Furthermore, the package was tested in the Temperature
Cycling (TC) test with 1000 cycles between -50°C and +150°C, which
measures the compatibility of the packaging material with the chip and
the substrate. The series concluded with the Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) tests, which indicate the
robustness of the sensor with regard to these two parameters. The SHT21
humidity sensor passed all of the tests ... |

Hydrogen detector with solid electrolyte
sensor improves fuel cell reliability |
| |
|
The
demands the automobile industry places on hydrogen detectors are
scarcely realisable: they have to be H2-specific, exact, durable and
robust, have short response times and in addition low power consumption.
They are also expected to compensate for temperature fluctuations and
humidity. Now J. Dittrich Elektronic is launching a hydrogen
detector on the market that is capable of meeting these demands, using a
novel electrochemical solid electrolyte sensor. Contrary to an
electrochemical cell, the sensor contains a solid electrolyte instead of
a liquid electrolyte. At the three-phase boundary of the measuring
electrode the hydrogen splits into protons and electrons; the resulting
current flow is proportional to the hydrogen concentration. Since this
reaction takes place at room temperature, the heating systems required
for classic solid electrolyte sensors are not needed. The power input of
this handily sized detector (L65 x W36 x H16 mm) is correspondingly low
at 0.32 watts. It contains no moving parts; silicone, halogen and
sulphuric compounds do not impair its functioning. In addition, it is
neither cross sensitive to HC, H2S, NO, NO2, CO nor to CO2. The sensor
has a fast response time ... |

Micronas presenting 3D Hall sensor,
Innovative sensor with vertical Hall elements designed for automotive
and industrial applications, as well as for use in home appliances |
| |
|
Micronas,
a leading supplier of innovative application-specific IC and sensor
system solutions for automotive electronics, launched the new HAL 36xy
family with their HAL 3625 Hall-effect sensor based on Micronas’ 3D-Hall
technology and equipped with vertical Hall elements. This technology
allows rotation angles from 0° to 360° to be detected directly with
minimum measuring efforts. Unlike today’s usual Hall sensors, which use
one Hall element to measure at one level only (Z-axis), the new
technology allows the detection of an additional X and Y axis. Combining
different axes and using the appropriate signal processing, a so-called
3D Hall sensor has been realized. The great advantage of these vertical
Hall-effect sensors is that they can be manufactured in a standard CMOS
process without additional post-processing. This process delivers
products with ultimate quality and reliability, especially for the
demanding automotive market. The HAL 36xy product family will include
several versions which will also differ in a number of essential
characteristics and properties. The first member of this family offered
by Micronas will be the HAL 3625 which delivers a ratiometric output
format. The 3D Hall sensor HAL 3625 features integrated signal
processing. ... |

Tyco Electronics Reluctance Resolvers for
Hybrid Applications |
| |
|
Tyco
Electronics: New emission legislation and the trend towards energy
efficient transportation support an increased development in the area of
hybrid propulsion for passenger cars. One of the key applications for
improved fuel economy in the hybrid market is the recovery and storage
of energy during the braking phase or regenerative braking. When
braking, the energy of the moving car is converted and stored in the
Li-ion batteries instead of being dissipated through the heating of
braking disks. Upon acceleration of the car, the available electrical
energy is used to help the car speed up by releasing this energy into a
controlled electrical motor. More advanced systems may continuously
propel the cars’ electrical motors. In order to keep the efficiency of
the electrical hybrid motors at a maximum level, the position of the
drive shaft must be continuously monitored. Tyco Electronics has
developed a break-though inductive sensor, known as a “Reluctance
Resolver,” that can help support reduced fuel consumption with in these
new hybrid propulsion systems. The Reluctance Resolver is part of a
system to measure shaft angles. ... |

Turbocharger speed sensor for high volume
production |
| |
|
New
from Micro-Epsilon is a range of turbocharger speed sensors for
high volume production. The turboSPEED TSSC series of sensors operates
according to the eddy
current principle and so provide several benefits. The sensor is
cast in plastic and has a separate electronics unit, which can be
integrated in the engine compartment separate from the turbocharger.
Speeds of 200 to 400,000rpm can be measured accurately with the sensor.
Due to the complex electronics and special linearisation, the sensor can
measure on turbine wheels made from aluminium or titanium. Titanium is
well known as a poor electrical conductor and is therefore generally
difficult to measure. The electronics for each turbine model is
configured and fixed afterwards for high precision. The low cost version
of the sensor meets all necessary requirements for the
automotive industry. The housing is protected to IP67; the
electronics complies with the EMC requirements in the engine
compartment. Different from conventional sensors for turbochargers, the
new sensor does not measure on the shaft between the two turbine wheels,
since these are often no longer accessible with the latest
turbochargers. The turboSPEED TSSC detects the edge of the compressor
wheel on the “cold” side of the turbocharger ... |

O-ring seals obsolete for many applications. The parts that come into
contact with the media are made from stainless steel (AISI 316L) in the
Series 22 S transmitters. In the Series 22 M the steel piezoresistive
pressure measuring cell is brazed to the brass pressure connection using
a nickel diaphragm. Brazing in tunnel furnaces has considerable cost
advantages in comparison to the usual electron beam welding at measuring
ranges up to 250 bar. The Series 22 pressure transmitters are available
in finely graduated pressure ranges from 5 bar to 250 bar sealed gauge.
