Tyco Electronics Presents Hall Travel-
and Rotary Sensor Platforms for Automotive Applications |
| |
Tyco
Electronics: In the automotive industry, development time is a key
factor for successful market positioning. Tyco Electronics’ answer for
this is a platform strategy for non-contact switches and angular- and
travel sensors. Standardized designs and production processes offer
short-term availability of fully functional sensors for functional
testing. One highlight is the hall technology based travel- and angular
sensor platform for measurement ranges up to 40mm or angle ranges of
360° (see picture). Travel and angle measurement can be realized within
one sensor package. The applied hall technology is a 2D measurement
principle which results in a significant measurement performance
increase compared to existing Hall sensors. These sensors show a high
performance related to a linearity error of only 2-3% and a temperature
drift of ... |

Tyco Electronics Reluctance Resolvers for
Hybrid Applications |
| |
|
Tyco
Electronics: New emission legislation and the trend towards energy
efficient transportation support an increased development in the area of
hybrid propulsion for passenger cars. One of the key applications for
improved fuel economy in the hybrid market is the recovery and storage
of energy during the braking phase or regenerative braking. When
braking, the energy of the moving car is converted and stored in the
Li-ion batteries instead of being dissipated through the heating of
braking disks. Upon acceleration of the car, the available electrical
energy is used to help the car speed up by releasing this energy into a
controlled electrical motor. More advanced systems may continuously
propel the cars’ electrical motors. In order to keep the efficiency of
the electrical hybrid motors at a maximum level, the position of the
drive shaft must be continuously monitored. Tyco Electronics has
developed a break-though inductive sensor, known as a “Reluctance
Resolver,” that can help support reduced fuel consumption with in these
new hybrid propulsion systems. The Reluctance Resolver is part of a
system to measure shaft angles. ... |

Turbocharger speed sensor for high volume
production |
| |
New
from Micro-Epsilon is a range of turbocharger speed sensors for
high volume production. The turboSPEED TSSC series of sensors operates
according to the eddy
current principle and so provide several benefits. The sensor is
cast in plastic and has a separate electronics unit, which can be
integrated in the engine compartment separate from the turbocharger.
Speeds of 200 to 400,000rpm can be measured accurately with the sensor.
Due to the complex electronics and special linearisation, the sensor can
measure on turbine wheels made from aluminium or titanium. Titanium is
well known as a poor electrical conductor and is therefore generally
difficult to measure. The electronics for each turbine model is
configured and fixed afterwards for high precision. The low cost version
of the sensor meets all necessary requirements for the
automotive industry. The housing is protected to IP67; the
electronics complies with the EMC requirements in the engine
compartment. Different from conventional sensors for turbochargers, the
new sensor does not measure on the shaft between the two turbine wheels,
since these are often no longer accessible with the latest
turbochargers. The turboSPEED TSSC detects the edge of the compressor
wheel on the “cold” side of the turbocharger ... |

Tyco Electronics Presents Sensors for
Detection of Neutral Position on Manual Transmissions -
Start-Stop-Application (Mild Hybrid) |
| |
Tyco
Electronics: New legal requirements for fuel and CO2 reductions also
require appropriate optimizations in the powertrain. Various automobile
manufacturers have developed and implemented Start-Stop systems
currently on the market Due to system requirements, it is necessary to
detect the transmission neutral position as one of the controlling
variable. In collaboration with a leading automobile manufacturer and
two gearbox suppliers, Tyco Electronics has developed a contactless
sensor for detecting the neutral position at various manual
transmissions. This sensor is based on PLCD technology (Permanentmagnetic-Linear-Contactless-Displacement).
A permanent magnet, located at the shifting shaft, serves as the target
object, whose position will be reflected in the neutral zone. The PLCD
sensor is mounted on the outside of the gearbox and detects the neutral
position of the transmission. Due to the functional principle of a
non-contact system, mechanical wear is avoided and the system
requirements of measurement ... |

Tyco Electronics Presents PLCD Position
Sensors for Exhaust Gas Recirculation of Truck Engines |
| |
Tyco
Electronics: New emission laws demand new technologies for
optimization of the combustion process. Along with the addition of
chemical substances (SCR) there is also the significant technology of
exhaust gas recirculation. A pneumatic cylinder, controlling a flap,
regulates the volume of exhaust gas which is recirculated. For precise
control in this application, a displacement sensor has to fulfil these
requirements: * Safe fixture on the cylinder, * Wear free measurement
with millions of cycles of the actuator, * Very precise measurement, *
Suitable for temperatures up to 150°C, * High resistance against
vibration. For precise measurements of displacement and positions, Tyco
Electronics employs the PLCD sensor (Permanentmagnetic Linear
Contactless Displacement). As a sensor manufacturer and development
partner in the automotive industry, Tyco Electronics offers their long
experience of development and project engineering for new sensor
application systems. Diverse portfolios of electromagnetic components

Hydrogen detector with solid electrolyte
sensor improves fuel cell reliability |
| |
The
demands the automobile industry places on hydrogen detectors are
scarcely realisable: they have to be H2-specific, exact, durable and
robust, have short response times and in addition low power consumption.
They are also expected to compensate for temperature fluctuations and
humidity. Now J. Dittrich Elektronic is launching a hydrogen
detector on the market that is capable of meeting these demands, using a
novel electrochemical solid electrolyte sensor. Contrary to an
electrochemical cell, the sensor contains a solid electrolyte instead of
a liquid electrolyte. At the three-phase boundary of the measuring
electrode the hydrogen splits into protons and electrons; the resulting
current flow is proportional to the hydrogen concentration. Since this
reaction takes place at room temperature, the heating systems required
for classic solid electrolyte sensors are not needed. The power input of
this handily sized detector (L65 x W36 x H16 mm) is correspondingly low
at 0.32 watts. It contains no moving parts; silicone, halogen and
sulphuric compounds do not impair its functioning. In addition, it is
neither cross sensitive to HC, H2S, NO, NO2, CO nor to CO2. The sensor
has a fast response time ... |

Micronas presenting 3D Hall sensor,
Innovative sensor with vertical Hall elements designed for automotive
and industrial applications, as well as for use in home appliances |
| |
Micronas,
a leading supplier of innovative application-specific IC and sensor
system solutions for automotive electronics, launched the new HAL 36xy
family with their HAL 3625 Hall-effect sensor based on Micronas’ 3D-Hall
technology and equipped with vertical Hall elements. This technology
allows rotation angles from 0° to 360° to be detected directly with
minimum measuring efforts. Unlike today’s usual Hall sensors, which use
one Hall element to measure at one level only (Z-axis), the new
technology allows the detection of an additional X and Y axis. Combining
different axes and using the appropriate signal processing, a so-called
3D Hall sensor has been realized. The great advantage of these vertical
Hall-effect sensors is that they can be manufactured in a standard CMOS
process without additional post-processing. This process delivers
products with ultimate quality and reliability, especially for the
demanding automotive market. The HAL 36xy product family will include
several versions which will also differ in a number of essential
characteristics and properties. The first member of this family offered
by Micronas will be the HAL 3625 which delivers a ratiometric output
format. The 3D Hall sensor HAL 3625 features integrated signal

The
Automotive Sensors division of PCB Piezotronics (PCB®) has
announced release of the industry’s first IEC-compliant high temperature
acoustic measurement system, Model 378B02, a combined prepolarized ICP®
microphone and preamplifier, which allows for high temperature
automotive acoustic testing to +120 °C, and eliminating the need for
high-priced probe microphones. This model also incorporates TEDS
technology, allowing for larger channel count testing applications, with
greater calibration data storage and retrieval capability and minimized
setup time. Use of traditional ICP® prepolarized microphones for
reliable measurements in high temperature areas of a vehicle, including
underhood, engine, manifold, exhaust pipe and other hot spots, has
traditionally not been possible, due to temperature ... |
