Adjust Transit Time Sensor by Simply
Pushing a Button |
| |
wenglor
sensoric presented at the SPS/IPC/Drives its new transit time
sensor for object detection. The new OY2TA transit time sensor closes
the gap between simple reflex sensors with background suppression and a
small working range, and high-end transit time sensors which are capable
of monitoring ranges of up to a hundred meters. It detects objects made
of metal, plastic, wood and cardboard at distances of 0 to 4 meters. The
sensor also generates a reliable shelf-full message for boxes and
Euro-pallets of a great variety of colors and various ages. It’s ideally
suited for position detection for factory conveyor vehicles and
electrical overhead conveyors as well. The sensor can be quickly and
easily aligned to its object thanks to the visible laser light spot.
Where applications in the woodworking industry are involved, the sensor
features fast and accurate detection of edges, ... |

The better way to find a PET! |
| |
|
Transparent PET bottle detection? Until now, we’ve been doing it all
wrong, says Dan Rossek, Product Marketing Manager for Sensor Business at
OMRON Electronics. PET bottles are one of the mainstays of
today’s beverage industry but, for automation and maintenance engineers,
they have one significant drawback – they’re hard to detect reliably
using conventional sensors. And, as bottles get thinner and more complex
in shape, this situation is getting worse. It’s my belief, however, that
the problem of detecting PET bottles only arises because we’ve been
going about it in the wrong way. Let me explain. Ordinary photosensors
work by measuring the change in light intensity when a target enters the
beam. This is fine with opaque or nearly opaque objects, but PET bottles
are usually transparent. They’re not perfectly transparent of course, so
the intensity of the light beam does change when a PET bottle enters it, ... |

Flexibility in Temperature Measurement |
| |
Baumer’s
product segment Process Instrumentation offers flexible and individually
configurable solutions for temperature measuring. As the measuring
devices are often exposed to harsh and not material-friendly
environments, Baumer also offers a wide range of thermowells (protective
tubes) for the measuring instruments. Baumer’s portfolio includes both
mechanical and electronic temperature measuring systems. Of the range of
mechanical devices, bimetal thermometers are suitable for HVAC (heating,
ventilation, air condition) and many industrial applications, whereas
gas expansion thermometers are mostly used in the heavy industry.
Flexibility in stem diameter and length, temperature range or process
connection allows to supply customized measuring instruments for
specific applications. For the field of electronic temperature
measuring, head-mounted and DIN rail-mounted transmitters are available.
They can be programmed easily and comfortably via the FlexProgrammer and
offer a maximum of flexibility for most of the common thermocouples and
RTDs (Resistance Temperature Devices) as well as for

| Nuclear engineers avoid
contact |
| |
Sensor
Technology Ltd: A test rig built at Centa Transmissions in
Shipley is allowing the company to guarantee that the precision
gearboxes it supplies to nuclear industry will never fail
prematurely. Despite its critical role, the rig is essentially
quite simple, in that a motor drives the test unit against a
load created by one of Centa’s own industrial disc brakes. The
test runs initially for three hours at the full working load,
and then is increased to 300 percent load for another hour. At
the heart of the rig is a non-contact sensor that constantly
monitors the torque in the gearbox, generating a performance
profile that can be compared with the ideal performance
standard. The sensor is a TorqSense unit, as developed and made
by Sensor Technology in Oxfordshire. Because it is a
non-contact, the TorqSense does not create a dynamic load, which
has to be accounted for in the ... |

athletic competitiveness can be achieved only through continuously
improved training methods. Accurate knowledge of take-off forces at ski
jumps or in athletics and of force development involved in weightlifting
or the martial arts helps to set records time and again. Kistler
offers a wide range of force plates to be used in research and sports.
Our sense of balance is the product of a complex control system. Kistler
force plates can be used for precise monitoring of shifts in weight and
for examination of the effects of diseases or medication. Rehabilitation
and prosthesis enhancement require very precise information on body
movements, with the forces involved in walking and running playing a key
role. Kistler force plates provide a precise and reliable record of
these forces in every ... |

Concentrations-/density and moisture
measurement using microwaves |
| |
BERTHOLD
Technologies GmbH & Co. KG: Concentration measurements are often
necessary in manufacturing processes. Usually, the water content of an
emulsion, a suspension or a solution is to be determined, in order to
control the process. A particularly elegant method of doing so is the
measurement of the concentration by means of microwaves. The water
content is determined with microwaves, hence the most interesting
components. The Micro-Polar also polarizes the water components, whereby
the propagation velocity and the energy of the microwaves are affected.
This influence, without changing the product is a direct measure for the
concentration. The measurement can take place directly in the pipe-line
by means of a smooth lined measuring tube "Flow-cell" or in process
containers by means of a dip tube. ... |
