ZMD adds diagnostics and higher accuracy
to its low-cost sensor signal conditioner family |
| |
ZMD AG, a global supplier of low power mixed-signal solutions for
automotive and medical applications, today introduced the ZMD31015
low-cost sensor signal conditioner IC with on-chip diagnostics. The CMOS
device, which can interface to nearly all bridge transducer types, is
based on the established ZMD31010 low-cost sensor signal conditioner IC,
and is the newest member of ZMD’s growing sensor signal conditioner IC
family. “These devices are being used in increasing numbers in
automotive applications, where they play a key role in safety, emission
control, and energy efficiency,” explains Frank Schulze, Business Line
Manager Automotive at ZMD. “For example, the ZMD31015 is used to monitor
airflow into the engine via the MAP sensor, to insure low emissions and
high fuel economy.” The ZMD31015 provides highly accurate amplification
and sensor-specific digital correction of bridge transducer signals.
Sensitivity is increased via a pre-amp with a very high gain, which in
turn accommodates bridge outputs as low as 1 mV/V. Accuracy is further
enhanced by an on-chip temperature sensor with the option of a
connection for an external temperature sensor. ... |

ZMD advances on-chip diagnostic
technology for automotive sensors |
| |
ZMD AG, a global supplier of low power mixed-signal solutions for
automotive and medical applications, today introduced the ZMD31150
high-speed automotive signal conditioner IC with advanced on-chip
diagnostics for use with all types of wheatstone bridge sensors. The
ZMD31150 is designed for all sensing applications in automotive
environments, such as fuel injection, ABS, power steering, air
induction, fuel tank, air conditioning and occupant classification. “In
some applications, speed is of the essence,” says Frank Schulze,
Business Line Manager Automotive at ZMD. “For optimum safety in a car
crash, the car must sense the size, weight, and orientation of the
front-seat occupants – quickly, in order to control the airbag’s
deployment. The ZMD31150 is two to seven times faster than other
signal-conditioning chips with comparable accuracy, and its diagnostic
features mean increased reliability when it’s needed most.” Sensor
inaccuracy or failure is a leading cause of unscheduled service for
modern automobiles. A sensor signal conditioner (SSC) must either give a
known-correct response, or report an error code. ... |

Liquid Dosing Systems using flow meter
controlled pumps |
| |
 |
Image: Coriolis mass flow meter with close-coupled gear pump.
Bronkhorst High-Tech BV, specialists in low flow measurement and
control, have introduced an alternative way for liquid flow control.
Instead of using a liquid flow meter with integrated control valve, the
new concept consists of a Thermal or Coriolis mass flow meter in
combination with a close-coupled gear pump, covering ranges from 20 mg/h
up to 600 kg/h. |
|
|
Flow control is achieved by utilising the integrated controller function
on the pcboard of the liquid flow meter. The liquid dosing system
accepts analog and RS232 setpoint as a standard and can optionally be
equipped with various fieldbus interfaces. Applying a flow meter
controlled pump eliminates the need to pressurise the liquid source with
inert gas blanket or similar techniques. In addition to the Bronkhorst
LIQUI-FLOW® Pump for small flow ranges and low viscosities, a complete
series of pumps is available for those applications which require higher
flow rates, higher pressures, wide control ranges or aggressive fluids.
All gear pumps are virtually pulsation free, thus avoiding the problem
of pulsating flow patterns. Thanks to the combination with a mass flow
meter ... |

e2v image sensors search for Earth-like
planets |
| |
With imaging sensors designed and manufactured by e2v, the COROT
space telescope launched on 27 December to examine star seismology and
to search for extra-solar Earth-like planets. The e2v sensors will
capture detailed, telescopic images from COROT as it travels its polar
orbit around the Earth. COROT (Convection Rotation and planetary
Transits) is part of the PROTEUS small satellites programme. A
pioneering mission led by CNES, the French National Space Agency, COROT
is a space telescope with a 30 centimetres aperture, which will be put
into circular polar orbit around the Earth at an 827km altitude for two
and a half years. Four back-thinned, frame transfer charge coupled
imaging devices (CCDs) from e2v - CCD42-80s - have been integrated into
COROT’s focal plane, which will capture images of stars, with two main
objectives: Firstly, a scientific study of the stars’ seismic activity
will be carried out. The 2,048 square pixel e2v devices will help COROT
to examine ‘star-quakes’ or vibrations that change the brightness of
stars. This will enable scientists to compute a star’s age, size, and
chemical makeup. ...

New piston detector more powerful now |
| |
|
The non-contacting piston detector SONOCONTROL 14 works with new hard-
and software more effectively now. The piston detector by SONOTEC
recognizes the position of a piston in hydraulic cylinders through the
cylinder wall, by using ultrasound. Because of a new method of analyzing
and the possibility to adjust the resolution and deceleration of the
scan time, the measurement range enlarges. |
|
|
The compact sensor recognizes independently, when the next impulse has
to occur. An interfere of the signals is prevented. The installation and
the adjustment are easy. The user has only to feed the application with
the inner diameter of the piston. The powerful performance of the sensor
is the result of the new hard- and software technology. The operating
voltage amounts 18 … 30 VDC. The sensor recognizes the position of the
piston by a piston temperature from –20 … +85°C. The SONOCONTROL 14 is
available as IP67 version and the version for Ex-zones on inquiry, too.
