Ultra Low Power and High Performance Open
up Potential for Sensors in Broad Range of Consumer Applications |
| |
 |
The introduction of a new family of sensors by VTI Technologies
is believed to be an enabling step towards opening up novel consumer
applications based on 3D-MEMS technology. The SCA3000 is a real 3-axis
accelerometer that can be used to measure acceleration, detect motion
and inclination. |
|
|
It could be used in portable navigation devices, sports equipment,
hand-held devices such as mobile phones, personal digital assistants and
more.
The SCA3000 breaks new ground when it comes to low current performance,
and is the lowest current consumption device produced so far, ” says
Pekka Kostiainen, product manager at VTI Technologies. “This helps
prolong battery life, which is critical for good user experience in many
consumer applications.” Potential applications are wide-ranging. They
include: supporting navigational systems such as dead reckoning with GPS
- data gathering in sports activities such as activity monitoring and
step counting - electronic compass compensation - creating novel user
interfaces for inputting data and controlling devices based on spatial
orientation and motion, and anti-theft and free-fall protection. “GPS
receivers assisted by inertial sensors ... |

Meganewton Press Force Calibration Sensor
for In-Situ Measurement of Press Forces up to 8 000 t |
| |
|
Large presses necessitate measurement of forces in the meganewton range.
Kistler has developed the new Type 9931A… series of sensors with
a range from 250 to several thousand tons for calibrating these
machines. The extremely compact and robust sensors are easily handled
and ideal for in-situ measurement. |
|
|
Several sensors can be combined to suit the application. The greater the
number used the wider the maximum measuring range that can be covered.
These sensors are supplemented with a selection of special accessories.
Sensor base or cover plates can be replaced at any time if wear arises.
The tapered flanges help optimize force transfer while reducing the
pressure on the bed of the press. ... |

“Créateur d’automobile” Safeguarded by
Safe4 |
| |
 |
The large increase in automating automobile production necessitates the
meticulous safeguarding of danger zones. The safety devices have to be
absolutely dependable even under complicated conditions. An unscheduled
stop of the production line could have fatal consequences for production
costs and delivery dates. |
|
|
For some time the French automobile manufacturer Renault has been using
the well proven Safe4 safety light curtain (category 4 according to EN
954-1) from CEDES for the safeguarding of their production lines. Using
the built-in laser alignment aid, the setup time, and thus also machine
downtime, are kept to an absolute minimum. Renault were impressed above
all by the incredible flexibility of the Safe4. No other safety light
curtain system can be so easily adapted for such an array of tasks.
Because the emitter and receiver edges are ... |

New High Sensitivity, DC Response
Accelerometer for Automotive and Off-Highway Testing |
| |
 |
August 7, 2006, Depew, NY, USA – The Vibration division of PCB
Piezotronics (PCB®) has announced new Model 3711, a high
sensitivity, MEMS DC (steady state) response accelerometer designed
expressly for automotive and off-highway testing. PCB’s Model 3711 is
gas damped, and provides micro g resolution and 10,000 g shock
survivability. |
|
|
Several full-scale acceleration ranges are available, from 3 to 200 g,
with a frequency response from DC to 1,500 Hz (± 5%). The sensor’s
footprint is 0.85 in. (21.6 mm) x 0.85 in. (21.6 mm) x 0.45 in. (11.4
mm) in a welded titanium case design, with a choice of either hermetic
connector or integral cable version. The accelerometer is well-suited
for applications such as brake deceleration compliance certification;
durability testing of vehicle radiators and air coolers; roll
stiffness/static rollover threshold tests vehicle/component test chamber
instrumentation; and NVH and multi-axis motion test platforms. Any
vibration sensing application requiring DC acceleration, high
resolution, and high sensitivity, yet able to survive high g events,
will benefit from this new accelerometer. ... |

Ultrasound: the ideal choice for low
conductivity applications |
| |
|
With the UFM 3030 ultrasonic flowmeter, KROHNE incorporated the
ultrasonic measuring principle in a unit suitable for a wide range of
applications. The UFM 3030 takes over where electromagnetic flowmeters
reach their operating limits. The unit features innovative electronics,
digital signal processing and uses the three-beam principle to ensure
stable, reliable measuring results. |
|
|
A typical application is in the measurement of demineralized water where
an ultrasonic flowmeter has to be used in place of an electromagnetic
meter because the media has little or no conductivity. This was the case
with a Swiss chemical company batching demineralized water for a variety
of processes. Here, a UFM 3030 is used together with a Batching Master
110i unit. The unit closes the control valve as soon as the preset
amount has been batched. HART technology is used for programming and
communications. The UFM 3030 offers all the advantages of ultrasonic
flowmetering - accurate measurement which is not dependent on
conductivity, viscosity, temperature, density or pressure. The sensor is ... |

LEM first to introduce dual-range,
non-intrusive current sensors for automotive applications |
| |
 |
LEM has introduced a series of dual-range, automotive-qualified
sensors for accurate, wide-range current measurements in vehicle battery
monitoring applications. The 25 models in the DHAB range are the first
in the industry to offer non-intrusive, galvanically-isolated solutions
in this application. |
|
|
A DHAB Hall-effect sensor is fixed onto the battery cable of a car. Its
two cores allow it to be used for two separate current ranges – one
between ±20 and ±80A and the other between ±50 and ±600A. This enables
full-range current measurements to be made in combination with
highly-accurate measurements at lower currents. The sealed housing of
the DHAB sensors means that no potting is required. Panel and
cable-mount versions are available to offer maximum mounting
versatility. The sensors meet all relevant standards, including ISO-TS
and RoHS. As with all other LEM products, the DHAB sensors benefit from ... |

New displacement sensor AML/SGD uses
strain gauge technology |
| |
 |
Applied Measurements is pleased to announce the introduction of a
new range of strain gauge based displacement transducers, the AML/SGD
Series. Initially available with stroke lengths of 0-10mm and 0-25mm,
the AML/SGD Series has an overall accuracy of +/-0.1% and excellent long
term and thermal stability. |
|
|
They require a stabilized dc voltage excitation anywhere between 2 and
10 volts and return a high level millivolt signal proportional to the
position of the plunger. The AML/SGD Series are constructed using a
rugged stainless steel tubular housing containing a spindle guide
bearing and spring return mechanism. A light spring force ensures a
minimal effect on the application and enables inverted operation when
required. Precision construction guarantees a long service life with
superb mechanical reliability. The AML/SDG Series are suitable for a
broad range of applications in Research and Development, Industrial,
Aerospace, Civil Engineering and Automotive. Being strain gauge based
they are compatible with ... |
