Epson Toyocom Develops New Series of Gyro-sensors for Vehicle Attitude
Sensing |
| |
Epson Toyocom Corporation,
the leader in crystal devices, announced the development of a
new series of compact, reliable gyro-sensors (angular rate
sensors) capable of withstanding temperatures as high as 125°C.
The new XV-9000 series of gyro-sensors is designed for vehicle
attitude
sensing applications in the automotive industry. More
and more vehicles are coming standard-equipped with driving
safety devices as calls for safer vehicles grow louder. The
United States, Europe, and Japan have all introduced legislation
mandating that vehicles be equipped with active safety systems
such as electronic stability control (ESC) to detect skidding
and correct vehicle attitude. In addition, manufacturers are
increasingly installing passive safety features, such as
rollover protection systems that detect vehicle rollovers and
side curtain airbags. These safety systems, which have to be
able to correctly sense skidding, rollovers, and other hazardous
vehicular behavior, are driving growth in demand for
gyro-sensors that detect changes in attitude by measuring
angular velocity. The sensors in the new XV-9000 series are
designed to meet these needs. By applying QMEMS*1 technology to
fabricate crystal sensing elements in an original hammerhead
structure, Epson Toyocom was able to realize very small sensors
that exhibit stable characteristics over a wide temperature
range (-40 to +125°C). In addition, Epson Toyocom increased
sensor reliability by providing a diagnostic circuit that
detects failures at any given time and at startup. The sensors
have also achieved excellent vibration resistance and shock
survivability by optimizing the sensing elements and their
support structure. ... |

New Coating Improves Optic Performance |
| |
SenseAir
is pleased to launch a new high-performance coating,
EQC (Eternal Quality Coating). The new coating is used in the
measurement cell and increases optic performance, using the
infrared gas measurement method. SenseAir's research team have
developed the new coating EQC which will further increase
quality and reduce the environmental load of the manufacturing
process. The use of EQC results in higher accuracy and
stability. It maintains high performance in varying temperature
and humidity, and in polluted air. The new coating is
manufactured through a completely new multi-layer technique and
has proved superior in all the tests performed. The new coating
is particularly suited to exposed environments and is resistant
to aggressive gases stemming from traffic, heavy industry and
public baths. The demand for accurate and reliable
carbon dioxide measurement is constantly increasing, and new
standards are introduced. One example is the new ASHRAE
(American Society for Heating, Refrigeration and
Air-Conditioning Engineers) specification of a Green Building
Standard. Another example is the Californian IAQ standard. Both
include standards for ventilation control through carbon dioxide
measurement. By accurately measuring the concentration of carbon
dioxide in the air, optimal ventilation and large energy-savings
are achieved. ... |

AppliedSensor, a designer and manufacturer of
chemical sensor components, announced today that its iAQ-engine
intelligent Indoor
Air Quality Module is installed in Middlebury
College’s Self-Reliance solar-powered house to provide real-time
indoor air quality data to future student residents. After
placing fourth in the 2011 U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar
Decathlon Competition held in Washington, D.C. in October, the
energy-efficient house was transported back to Middlebury
College in Vermont, where it will serve as a student dorm. “We
incorporated AppliedSensor’s IAQ-engine in Self-Reliance as we
feel it is a great product. This project demonstrates how indoor
air quality can be monitored and superior IAQ achieved in a
virtually airtight, super-insulated home,” said Peter Schneider,
an energy consultant with Efficiency Vermont. The iAQ-engine’s
sensor, located in the main living space of the Self-Reliance
dormitory, will track indoor air quality every minute. Collected
data will be displayed online and on a dashboard in the dorm’s
kitchen. This will enable student residents to monitor the
quality of their indoor air in real time and adjust the
ventilation system as needed. Full indoor air quality data will

Safe, compact and quickly installed: Bearingless
encoders in lift engineering |
| |
The
wide selection of compact, bearingless encoders presented by the
encoder and sensor expert Baumer at this year’s
Interlift trade fair provides particularly promising solutions
for lift engineering. “Thanks to their quick and easy
installation capabilities and their compact design benefits,
these encoders are virtually predestined for lift applications“,
underlines Christof Richard, Product Manager Motion Control at
Baumer. The
absolute encoder MHAD (photo) is one of the highlights in
the Baumer portfolio of rotary encoders without integral
bearings. It combines the product benefits of extremely narrow
dimensions with the functionality capabilities of an absolute
encoder. The small MAHD is easy to fit into tight spots where
installation space is confined. Thanks to its large
through-hollow shaft the encoder does not consume any space at
the shaft end but allows for installation anywhere on the motor
shaft. MHAD is a member of the HDmag encoder family which excels
with extreme robustness thanks to non-contact magnetic sensing,
absolute reliability and maximum availability. MHAD unites
high-precision absolute and incremental signals in a single
device. The current position will be output as absolute value
with 16-bit resolution, optionally via SSI or CANopen interface.
An additional incremental signal (8192 steps per turn) provides
speed feedback. The large permissible tolerances of 1 mm on
radial and axial displacement as well as air gap allow for safe
and yet so quick installation. An LED provided at the encoder
acts as activity indicator and at the same time as installation
aid. ... |

| MAC 502, The Powerful New Universal Code
Reader for Every Situation |
| |
With
its MAC502 reader, Pepperl+Fuchs is
launching an innovative stationary
universal code reader that can read all common 1-D
and 2-D codes (26 different code symbologies) at very
high speeds of up to 10 m/s and 30 readings per second.
Both code readers have a very large depth of focus and
can reliably read codes at distances from 60 mm to 190
mm without having to make any mechanical or electronic
modifications. Small Data Matrix codes and large
barcodes are reliably detected due to the large read
field of up to 110 mm x 70 mm. There is no need for the
time-consuming installation of configuration software to
parameterize and operate the code readers, as these
tasks are handled by a modern web interface provided by
a web server integrated in the code reader. A
prerequisite is that the code reader is connected to the
company network or a PC via the integrated Ethernet
interface. The web interface is accessed by entering the
IP address of the reader in the address line of any
Internet browser, enabling the code reader to be
configured with a convenient user interface on any PC.
The code reader has a code quality output to prevent the
loss of readings. If this falls below a predefined
value, the user is warned in plenty of time. ... |

| Technology transfer is more important then
innovation |

Sensor
Technology: Innovation, we are told, is the key
to a successful manufacturing economy. Invent and patent
something and you will make money on every one made – if
it is mass produced you get an on-going income. Tony
Ingham of Sensor Technology Ltd looks at his experience
over two decades and tries to draw some general
principles that may help Britain in its new ambition to
rebuild the manufacturing base. We are all familiar with
the idea of the man who had a brilliant idea and got it
to market - James Dyson and his revolutionary vacuum
cleaner; Steve Jobs who dropped out of college, tinkered
with some electronics and set up Apple; Percy Shaw, the
man behind the cat’s eye. And most of us are bright
enough to know that there is an awful lot of hard work
between having the idea and reaping generous rewards. ... |

Optris
GmbH: The ratio pyrometer optris CTratio 1M is
designed for
non-contact measurement of temperatures in the range
between 700°C and 1800°C. Its functional principle
guarantees precise measurements even when the field of
view is severely occluded, for example by fumes. This
makes it highly useful for applications in harsh
environments as they prevail in the metal and glass
industries. With the CTratio 1M, Optris has added a
ratio pyrometer with fibre optic cable to its
high-performance series. The measuring instrument is
used especially in ambient temperatures up to 250°C
where the measuring head requires no cooling. In
contrast to traditional connections, the optical
multi-fibre cables used here comprise multiple
interwoven glass fibres. This makes the fibre highly
break-resistant, so that the pyrometer can be installed
in difficult-to-access areas and maze-like production
environments. Cables are deliverable in lengths up to 22
m to cover the majority of installation scenarios. Other
advantages are the very fast response time of 5 ms and
an integrated laser sight to mark the actual spot size. ... |
