Hydrogen detector with solid electrolyte
sensor improves fuel cell reliability |
| |
The
demands the
automobile industry places on hydrogen detectors are
scarcely realisable: they have to be H2-specific, exact, durable and
robust, have short response times and in addition low power consumption.
They are also expected to compensate for temperature fluctuations and
humidity. Now J. Dittrich Elektronic is launching a hydrogen
detector on the market that is capable of meeting these demands, using a
novel electrochemical solid electrolyte sensor. Contrary to an
electrochemical cell, the sensor contains a solid electrolyte instead of
a liquid electrolyte. At the three-phase boundary of the measuring
electrode the hydrogen splits into protons and electrons; the resulting
current flow is proportional to the hydrogen concentration. Since this
reaction takes place at room temperature, the heating systems required
for classic solid electrolyte sensors are not needed. The power input of
this handily sized detector (L65 x W36 x H16 mm) is correspondingly low
at 0.32 watts. It contains no moving parts; silicone, halogen and
sulphuric compounds do not impair its functioning. In addition, it is
neither cross sensitive to HC, H2S, NO, NO2, CO nor to CO2. The sensor
has a fast response time ... |

No end to cold wave, UFM 3030 ultrasonic
measuring device receives type-approval certificate under German law as
cold meter |
| |
KROHNE:
The UFM 3030
ultrasonic flowmeter now features type-approval certificate
under German law as a cold meter. This means the device can be used for
commercial purposes and for custody transfer applications. The customer
base for cold meters is predominantly made up of public utilities and
operators of refrigeration networks. The principle behind cold energy
measurement is identical to that of warm energy measurement: In both
cases, a flowmeter along with two temperature sensors and a calculator
are used to bill cold or warm energy. One typical application for cold
energy measurement would be a large refrigerating machine that serves a
business or a building. Air conditioning units use the supplied cold to
cool the surrounding air and return warm water. The cold energy consumed
can be calculated using the flow volume measured by the UFM 3030 and the
difference in temperature between the supply and return. The meters in
existing plants can easily be replaced without changing the existing
application as the UFM 3030 flowmeter is available in a variety of
installation lengths and for a wide range of minimum and permanent
flows. ... |

Stainless steel IP 69K full metal
housings – DuroProx inductive sensors |
| |
Baumer:
The DuroProx
inductive sensors are tough enough to take it. The sensor
family comprises inductive sensors with IP 69K protection class full
metal housings that were designed from the outset for use in harsh and
demanding industrial applications. Thanks to an operating temperature
range of -25 °C to +100 °C and a housing made of V4A/316L stainless
steel, these sensors can be employed in on- and offshore wind energy
applications fors tasks such as monitoring of disc brake pads, rotor
speed and position feedback as well as in any other environments subject
to extreme contamination levels. They are even able to withstand
environments subject to high EMI levels without damage. The necessary
protection is provided not only by the full metal housing with an active
surface made of stainless steel, but also increased interference
resistance in accordance with EN 61000-6-2. The sensors are available in
extremley compact designs from 6.5 mm housings to larger M8, M12 or M18
versions. The sensing distance ranges from 2 to 6 mm. An ASIC was
employed in the design of the inductive sensors in order to reduce ... |

New actuators – compact and dependable,
Safe and reliable format alignment |
| |
Baumer:
To saturate the requirements of short delivery times and small lot
sizes, frequent format alignments are more and more common events in the
manufacturing process: There are shafts and stop positions to be
adjusted and sensors to be repositioned. This evolution demands
production machines with automated format alignments. The new actuator
MSBA masters the task with only minimum space requirements. With only 42
mm in diameter it is the smallest sensor of its class and accommodates
geared motor, position sensing unit, regulator and CANopen interface.
The new target position is reached quickly and reliably. Dynamic
overload protection by overspeed limiting (I2t-regulation) provides
efficient remedy against overload. Thanks to absolute multiturn sensing
both reference switch and reference cycle are superfluous. It will
retain the position even when being moved during power-off. ... |

Fail-safe oxygen measuring system
increases the efficiency of pellet heaters |
| |
Increasing
numbers of households are now turning to wood or pellet heaters for
their central heating systems. Using the fail-safe MF010-O-LC
oxygen
measuring system from J. Dittrich Elektronic it is possible to
determine the residual oxygen content in furnace exhaust gas. With the
help of a controller, the excess air necessary for reasons of safety can
be minimized and combustion optimized, thereby increasing efficiency.
Emission values in the exhaust gas fall. In addition, it is possible to
compensate for fluctuations in the calorific value of the fuel or in the
fuel supply. Contrary to a lambda probe which measures the relative
oxygen content, the extremely robust oxygen measuring system determines
the absolute content, i.e. the oxygen partial pressure in the exhaust
gas. For this reason, fluctuations in air pressure, humidity and
temperature have no influence on the accuracy of the measurement. ... |

Harvesting energy from vibration, Robust
piezo actuators and sensitive electronics replace batteries |
| |
PI
Ceramic (PIC): Radio sensors can monitor installations at locations
which are difficult to get to and thus support automation. The energy
supply is an important consideration in such applications. In order to
dispense with the need for batteries and the associated servicing work,
it is possible to use energy from the surrounding environment: energy
harvesting. Piezoelements convert the kinetic energy from vibrations or
shocks in the surrounding environment into electrical energy, and when
equipped with the appropriate electronics they can create an autonomous
system. The robust DuraAct piezo actuators from PI Ceramic (PIC) are
laminated in plastic and particularly well suited to energy harvesting.
They are simple to handle and can even utilize displacements up to the
millimeter range. What’s more, they are particularly reliable and
durable. PIC also provides matching transducer and storage electronics
as initial prototypes. The unit is small and can therefore be used
almost anywhere, with very low intrinsic power consumption. Smaller
dimensions in chip-size are currently being investigated. The energy
harvesting system operates over a large frequency range from ... |
