New thermowell: Self-draining in any
mounting position |
| |
WIKA
has developed a new thermowell for sanitary applications. The TW61 in
hygienic design not only enables
temperature measurement with the
minimum of dead space, but also, at the same time, remains self-draining
in all mounting positions. The patent-pending design avoids the usual
neck in the respective pipe section for fitting the measuring
instrument. The new TW61 thermowell ensures simple cleaning and reduces
the risk of contamination. The process connection is made via an orbital
weld or via a removable hygienic connection. In combination with the
TR22 or the TR21 resistance thermometer the new thermowell represents a
highly-efficient solution for temperature measuring points: Both
thermometers increase ... |

Talking Sense about Technology Transfer |
| |
Sensor
Technology Ltd: Technology transfer may prove one of the cornerstone
engines for growth as the UK emerges from recession over the coming
months. Sensor Technology in Oxon are virtually addicted to the habit,
so we asked their Tony Ingham how it has shaped the company’s
development and what the future holds. Wireless became one of the
buzzwords of the late Noughties, and ‘wireless’ got our grandparents’
generation excited too in the 1940s. But between those periods the word
was not much used – except at Sensor Technology around the turn of the
Millennium. “We’d identified a way to
measure the torque in a rotating shaft without maintaining physical
contact – well, the theory of how to do it!” says Tony Ingham. “Doing
away with the traditional slip rings would be a big advantage in many
potential applications, and we kept thinking of more and more reasons to
develop the concept.” Sensor Technology had been ... |

Ultrasonic fork sensors with binary
output |
| |
SNT
Sensortechnik AG: The UPF-A ultrasonic fork sensors were offered so
far with 0...10V analogue output. It is possible to measure the edge
position for web guide control. The same sensors are now available on
demand with a PNP binary output (NO or NC) as well. This can be used e.g
for counting parts on small conveyors.
Ultrasonic sensors are superior to optical fork sensors when targets
have to be detected in dusty and dirty environemt. The sensors with PNP
output have an M8 4-pin connector with built-in LED for status
indication. More and much slimer ultrasonic fork sensors with binary
output ... |

New DIN-Rail Amplifier for use with LVDTs |
| |
Stellar
Technology: The new Series AP5104 is a convenient DIN-rail Amplifier
for use with 4-, 5-, or 6-wire
LVDT’s (linear variable differential
transformer). The AP5104 provides regulated AC excitation with remote
sensing capability for cable runs exceeding 20 feet. The AP5104 produces
filtered analog outputs of ±0-5Vdc, ±0-10 Vdc, 4-20 mA, 4-12-20 mA which
are field-selectable via the front panel. These outputs are filtered
using a low-pass active filter that removes unwanted high-frequency
measurement-signal components and thus eliminates aliasing errors.
Signal inputs from 16 to 1600 mV/V are accepted. The DIN mount housing
is constructed of high-impact thermoplastic and permits easy access to
screw terminal connections for power, analog output, shunt, and sensor
signals. All controls are external including 25-turn trim pots for Zero
and span, as well as coarse gain and zero, zero input switch, jumper
links for master/slave setting, and excitation frequency setting. The
manual or automatic phase shift adjustment ... |

White Paper from Tekscan Helps OEM Design
Engineers Navigate the Force Sensor Selection Process |
| |
|
OEM engineers have always faced unique challenges in specifying
force
sensors, or force transducers. “Force Sensors for Design,” a
newly-published white paper from force sensor experts Tekscan, Inc.
illustrates that, in addition to finding a force transducer with the
right performance specifications, challenges include issues such as
cost, turnaround-time, engineering support from the manufacturer,
customization capabilities, off-the-shelf options for prototyping and/or
lower quantities, and more. With an abundance of available force sensors
on the market, from load cells to strain gauges to thin and flexible
resistive technology, selecting the right sensor for a particular
application can be overwhelming. In addition, with more and more
engineers working across disciplines in their positions, many product
designers find themselves in unfamiliar territory at times. Proper
guidance is essential. Tekscan, Inc., leading manufacturer of force and
pressure measurement technology, demonstrates a commitment to helping
product designers and OEMs overcome these challenges in the
newly-published white paper, “Force Sensors for Design. ... |

Sensor system for inspecting the internal
walls of bore holes |
| |
A
development project for a bore hole sensor originally conceived by
Micro-Epsilon in 2009 has now resulted in a commercially available
sensor product. The miniature confocal sensor with a diameter of just
3.5mm can now be used for measuring bore holes with diameters of 4.0mm
or higher. The sensor, which is rotated by an electric servomotor, can
be used to measure a number of bore hole characteristics, for example,
the diameter, roundness, concentricity, tapers and straightness. A
sophisticated integrated precision ball bearing system provides the
required rotation stability. The system comprises a stainless steel
measuring head with integrated mechanics, a sensor probe with integrated
confocal sensor, as well as two controllers. Similar to the linear
standard systems, the confocal technology is suitable for numerous
surface types. The system does not require any reference points during
measurements, as it is able to recognise edges and steps. Measuring
tapered bore holes is only possible at full power, otherwise the light
spot is reflected past the optical system. However, in the case of a
suitable target surface, a measurement of the diffuse reflection with
reduced power is possible. Due to its compact installation length, the
sensor can measure bore holes with depths of up to 90mm. In doing so,
the sensor probe is guided ... |

transmitter with wireless transmission |
| |
JUMO
is expanding its Wtrans system for sensor signal conditioning with the
new programmable and cordless head transmitter with wireless
transmission. The new JUMO Wtrans B transmitter model has a universal
measurement input for resistance thermometers, resistance
potentiometers, thermocouples and mV signals and can
measure temperature
and liquid
level, as well as other process signals. The flexibility of
the head transmitter is underlined not only by the 24 retained
resistance thermometer/thermocouple characteristics, but also by
customized linearization with up to 40 value pairs or by the use of a
4th order polynomial. Under these conditions, there are considerable
potential stock management savings to be made for plant builders and
converters, as the model can be used for diverse applications. The
associated setup program for easily and quickly configuring the wireless
transmitter has a function for automatically ... |

Kistler Group Awarded Major Contract in
India |
| |
The
Kistler Group has been awarded the contract for instrumentation
of three crash centers for the Indian
automobile industry. The client for this substantial deal worth
almost twenty million Swiss francs is the autonomous project under
Department of Heavy Industries – National Automobile Testing and R&D
Infrastructure Project (NATRIP). This means last year's acquisitions by
the Business Unit Vehicles of the Kistler Group are already paying off.
The Indian automobile industry is accelerating, with over-average rates
of growth at home and abroad. To enable these carmakers to hold their
own on the world market, their products have to meet the international
environmental and safety standards. For this reason the Indian
government set up the National Automobile Testing and R&D
Infra-structure Project (NATRIP), which will establish three crash
centers to the latest standards in Chennai, Pune and Delhi. The
instrumentation of these centers was put out to international tender. ... |
