Temperature sensors for cold meters |
| |
JUMO
is presenting an extensive range of nationally approved
temperature
sensors to be used for cold measurement. These include the so-called
“direct short” short temperature sensors to EN 1434 and the long
temperature sensors for direct installation and for immersion sleeve
application. There are special connecting cables and seals to ensure
that the system remains tightly sealed and reliable, even after several
thousand changes in temperature, that can fall below the dew point. The
implementation of European Measuring Instrument Directive 2204/22/EC
(MID) has regulated approval and placing on the market for heat meters
and other measuring instruments, throughout Europe. As well as heat
energy for heating, cold energy for air conditioning and cooling is now
also gaining importance, so that this form of energy also has to be
precisely measured for accurate billing. The European directive itself
only recognizes the heat meter as a measuring instrument, but not a cold
meter. Until the MID came into force, the area of cold measurement in
Germany was covered by heat meters. ... |

New resistance thermometer, Space-saving
and hygienic |
| |
Wika
has expanded its product range for sanitary applications with an
exceptionally compact
resistance thermometer with integrated
transmitter. The hygienic TR21 Minitrans, with a diameter of 19 mm,
enables space-saving installation, whether directly or within a
thermowell. The new thermometer operates in the range between –50 °C and
+150 °C, and the span can be increased to +200 °C using an optional neck
tube. The electrical connection is simple to make via an M12 connector,
with the measured value transmission via a 4 ... 20 mA output signal of
the transmitter. The measured value can, however, also be taken directly
from the sensor (Pt100 Class A), without the transmitter it is even more
space-saving. For direct installation the thermometer is ... |

accelerometers are rugged,
easy-to-use
sensors for measuring shock and vibration. The low cost,
industrial grade 1010, 1210, and 1221 accelerometers have low impedance
outputs and are ideally suited for zero to medium frequency
instrumentation applications. Each miniature, hermetically sealed
package combines a micro-machined capacitive sense element, a custom
integrated circuit, and a sense amplifier. The 1010 includes a
sigma-delta A/D converter while the 1210 and 1221 have a sense amplifier
and differential output stage. All three models are relatively
insensitive to temperature changes and gradients. Each device is marked
with a serial number on its bottom surface for traceability. An optional
calibration test sheet is also available which lists the measured bias,
scale factor, linearity, operating current and frequency response. The
2g version of the 1221 is ideally suited for seismic applications. As
opposed to other technologies at the 2 g level, the 1221 is very
durable. SDI’s technology is scalable and flexible which allows for a
large selection of g ranges while also functioning over a wide
bandwidth. Models 1210 and 1221 produce two analog output voltages which
vary with acceleration. ... |

Open communication – Ultrasonic sensors
with IO-Link |
| |
Thanks
to their new IO-Link interface, Baumer’s Series 09
ultrasonic
sensors can now communicate with the control bi-directionally. Thus, the
sensors’ intelligence, e.g. the integrated sonic echo analysis, can be
used externally. As a result they are more versatile than conventional
sensors and increase the process reliability. On the one hand, the
sensor can be adjusted ideally to the current situation during the
process via the direct communication from the control. For instance, the
integrated temperature compensation can be switched off or on as needed.
This results e.g. in quicker and more accurate measurands when the
machine is started. The output function (edge/window) can also be
adjusted individually according to the objects to be detected, which
ensures a relaible detection in every situation. On the other hand,
information emitted by the sensor can now be used for troubleshooting
and therefore prevent process errors or machine breakdowns ... |

Innovative sensing solutions,
dramatically improving overal energy efficiency |
| |
SENSeOR:
Our future will be conditioned by how well we handle the available
resources and how we use them to improve our everyday life without
degrading our environment. All industries face the challenge of
producing more - or better - with fewer resources, with reduced energy
consumption while increasing productivity and safety. Consumers should
also reduce their environmental impact in all their actions. Sensor and
measurement technology play a significant role in implementing a
sustainable way-of-life for the future, providing the information
required to monitor and control equipment optimally and improve
production process efficiencies. Innovative solutions for demanding
applications: SENSeOR’s break-through sensing solutions are based on SAW
(Surface Acoustic Wave) sensors. They are wireless and require no direct
power source. Sensors are indeed only powered by the energy of radio
waves emitted by the associated reader unit when remotely interrogating
the sensors in real-time. Benefits for the most demanding, and
previously impossible industrial applications are unique. By avoiding
problematic wires, these maintenance-free and light-weight sensors ... |

Tyco Electronics Presents
Hall Sensors
for Convertible Roof Systems |
| |
Tyco
Electronics: Requirements for convertible roof systems increased
dramatically over the last twenty years. The system of textile roofs has
been developed continuously and complemented by retractable hard tops
since the beginning of the nineties. The complete kinematics has high
mechanical tolerances, but the robustness of the complete system must be
provided every time. In order to provide availability and accuracy, non
contacting position sensors are being used either for on/off
position
detection or
angular positions detection. For a proper working
kinematics in a roof system, position sensors and
angular sensors are designed
in. Depending on the mechanical design, different types of sensors are
being used for these applications, such as on/off position detection at
kinematics, angular detections at swivel joints, and end position
detections at hydraulic cylinders. Separate cable assemblies are used
frequently which provide a simple and precise mounting in the complex
mounting process of a roof system. For over ten years, Tyco Electronics
has provided hall sensor cable assemblies ... |

Nuclear engineers avoid contact |
| |
Sensor
Technology Ltd: A test rig built at Centa Transmissions in Shipley
is allowing the company to guarantee that the precision gearboxes it
supplies to nuclear industry will never fail prematurely. Despite its
critical role, the rig is essentially quite simple, in that a motor
drives the test unit against a load created by one of Centa’s own
industrial disc brakes. The test runs initially for three hours at the
full working load, and then is increased to 300 percent load for another
hour. At the heart of the rig is a non-contact sensor that constantly
monitors the torque in the gearbox, generating a performance profile
that can be compared with the ideal performance standard. The sensor is
a TorqSense unit, as developed and made by Sensor Technology in
Oxfordshire. Because it is a non-contact, the TorqSense does not create
a dynamic load, which has to be accounted for in the analysis of the
output signal. “The output reading we get is a true refection of the
performance of the gearbox, we don’t even have to allow for a constant
offset,” says Michael Sykes, MD of Centa Transmissions. “This means our
calculations ... |

ACANTO Absolute Length Gauge |
| |
At
this year’s Control trade show, HEIDENHAIN will be presenting new
length gauges of the ACANTO Series. They are characterized by absolute
position value formation and are ideal for use in production-related
metrology, at multipoint inspection apparatuses and in automated
inspection equipment. The product is based on the optical scanning of
absolute graduations, which permits high accuracy at high resolution and
linearity over the entire measuring length. The technology behind the
scanning in the ACANTO is similar to the optical scanning in absolute
rotary encoders, which have proven themselves for years. The EnDat 2.2
interface, which is well known in the absolute HEIDENHAIN encoders,
offers a convenient status request function and diagnostic capabilities,
makes it possible to quickly put a system into operation, and permits
high clock frequency. During commissioning, the device data can be read
out over the EnDat 2.2 interface for self-configuration; during
operation, valuation numbers permit diagnostics on the quality of the
incremental and absolute tracks. In addition, OEM-specific information
can be saved in the length gauge’s memory. ACANTO
length gauges are

Measuring Nip and Roller Contact
Pressures |
| |
|
The I-Scan® System from Tekscan is a complete pressure and
force
measurement system that allows the user to view, measure, record, and
evaluate static and dynamic pressures between virtually any two
contacting or mating surfaces. The I-Scan system is used to identify
roller contact pressures and nip profiles during various laminating and
printing press applications. Nip width, roller contact area and proper
parallelism of the rollers can be determined and documented in the
real-time software. This information can then be used to align rollers
before large production runs or during maintenance activities, reducing
machine setup time and minimizing product waste. Each I-Scan system
includes software, tactile, matrix-based, array
pressure sensors, and a
data acquisition handle that performs an analog to digital conversion.
The system offers a USB connection to either a PC or laptop with
scanning rates of 100Hz. The software allows force and pressure data to
be viewed in real-time or displayed as colorful 2D and 3D images. Data
can also be analyzed in a multitude of graphing options, such as force
vs. time, or can be exported into ASCII compatible programs. Sensors are ... |

Continuous Measurement of Coke Drum Level |
| |
BERTHOLD
Technologies GmbH & Co. KG: Monitoring the level of coke drum
bottoms in a delayed coker is among the most important processes in a
refinery. High temperatures and foam, extensive caking as well as a
high-pressure water jet demonstrate the unfavorable measuring conditions
dominating this application. The
radiometric level measurement
employing
the LB 490 Tower-Sens detector has proven to be a reliable and
cost-effective solution that will withstand this tough environment. It
provides a continuous measurement, monitoring the foam as well as the
coke level in the drum online and very accurately. All components of the
measuring system are mounted on the outer wall of the coke drum and are
therefore not affected by the aggressive processes inside. The Tower-Sens
utilizes a detector length up to 8m and can even be mounted in a
cascaded fashion to deal with the long measuring ranges ... |
