Differential pressure measurement with
even better zero-point accuracy |
| |
The
first dynamic digital
differential pressure sensor from Sensirion, the SDP600
series, was awaited with great anticipation. This was hardly surprising,
since the advance specifications of the small, fully calibrated sensor
included outstanding long-term stability and a short response time along
with high accuracy and sensitivity, even with very small differential
pressures (less than 10 Pa). Accumulated practical experience with the
sensor and test results now show that the performance exceeds the high
standard of the advance specifications. In particular, the range of
zero-point variation is three times less than expected. The maximum
deviation from the zero point was originally specified as 0.5 Pa, but
now it has been restated as 0.2 Pa. The SPD600 series also solidly
fulfils its expectations with regard to reliability and other
specifications. With this, the new sensor achieves ... |

Sensors for Water Treatment Applications |
| |
Water
treatment applications place high demands on pressure and level
measuring instruments. For these applications, Baumer offers
robust sensors which are suitable for high vibrations as well as for the
use with aggressive media. For example, sensors made of
seawater-resistant Hastelloy C and with a ceramic sensing element are
available for desalination plants. Flush mount versions are offered for
sewage applications. The devices can be easily configured on PC via the
FlexProgrammer 9701. Pressure and level measuring devices for water
treatment applications have to be extremely robust. First of all, this
concerns the materials used in instruments that are in contact with
aggressive or corrosive media in applications such as desalination
plants or sewage sludge processing. In addition, the devices have to be
highly resistant against vibrations which are generated continuously for
example in applications with volumetric pumps. Further challenges are
the formation of foam, suspended solids, and condensation in tanks. For
these challenges, Baumer offers an extensive portfolio of
pressure
sensors and
level sensors ... |

Vision System Provides Traceability for
Handpass Assembly System |
| |
Cognex
Corporation: Innovative Automation was contracted by one of their
long-standing customers, a world leader in electromechanical actuators
and emission control devices, to design and build an assembly line to
produce a new actuator. This unit is a critical engine component;
therefore, the client required traceability of the assembly process
operations as well as the final testing operations. Parts are passed by
hand from station to station in the assembly system used in this
application. The assembly system also includes a four-station
dial-machine in which parts are indexed between stations. Innovative
Automation utilized a concept of marking a 2D Data Matrix code on the
plastic housing of the part that is read at each assembly and test
operation. A Cognex In-Sight® 5110 vision system is used at the first
assembly station to verify that the 2D Data Matrix code quality is
sufficient to be readable at all subsequent machine stations. Innovative
Automation selected the In-Sight 5110 vision system because ... |

SENSOR+TEST 2010: Sensor, Measuring, and
Testing Technology to the Point |
| |
AMA
Association for Sensor Technology.: From the 18th to the 20th of May
2010, the 17th International Trade Fair for Sensorics, Measuring, and
Testing Technology will be held on the Nürnberg exhibition grounds.
Reflecting the growing economic significance of these cross-cutting
thematic areas, the AMA Association counts with about 500 exhibitors
despite the recent economic downturn in the major supplied industries.
The great demand for innovation by the users is seen as a special
challenge for supplier presence. Focus: Energy Efficiency: For the first
time, this year the trade fair will be held under a motto. Reflecting
the worldwide discussion, the Exhibitor Committee of the SENSOR+TEST
and the Executive Board of the AMA Association have decided to focus on
energy efficiency. Sensors in devices and machines, in plants,
buildings, and cars make it possible to find and maintain
energy-optimized operating modes. And it is measuring and testing
technology which provides the process information required in the
research-and-development phase. The thematic spectrum of the SENSOR+TEST
agrees to an extraordinary extent with the topics and tasks that result
from the demand for greater energy efficiency. There is no optimization
– and today this can only mean reduction – of energy consumption without
sensor technology. . ... |

Detection of Neutral Position on Manual Transmissions -
Start-Stop-Application (Mild Hybrid) |
| |
Tyco
Electronics: New legal requirements for fuel and CO2 reductions also
require appropriate optimizations in the powertrain. Various automobile
manufacturers have developed and implemented Start-Stop systems
currently on the market Due to system requirements, it is necessary to
detect the transmission neutral position as one of the controlling
variable. In collaboration with a leading
automobile manufacturer and
two gearbox suppliers, Tyco Electronics has developed a contactless
sensor for detecting the neutral position at various manual
transmissions. This sensor is based on PLCD technology (Permanentmagnetic-Linear-Contactless-Displacement).
A permanent magnet, located at the shifting shaft, serves as the target
object, whose position will be reflected in the neutral zone. The PLCD
sensor is mounted on the outside of the gearbox and detects the neutral
position of the transmission. Due to the functional principle of a
non-contact system, mechanical wear is avoided and the system
requirements of measurement ... |
