UAV takes fast track to altitude |
| |
Sensor Technology Ltd: Development of a vertical take-off and
landing unmanned aerial vehicle is nearing completion, thanks in part to
a non-contact digital
torque sensor, TorqSense, which proved the only
viable option for use on the test rig. The low-cost, flexible search and
surveillance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is intended for military,
homeland security, policing and environmental monitoring. It is rugged,
immediately deployable and can be launched from the ground, ship or even
moving vehicles. The vectored-thrust UAV platform is suitable for any
situation requiring safe aerial viewing or sensor measurement. It is
being developed by SELEX Sensors and Airborne Systems (S&AS), a
Finmeccanica company. “The TorqSense technology has been one of the key
enablers for the development and implementation of the novel propulsion
system on the Damselfy UAV” said Mark Agnew, Selex’s Chief Engineer for
UAV Systems. Leading the project is Ashley Bryant, who started out
wanting to build a flyable scale-model replica of the vertical take off
Harrier jump jet, but quickly saw the potential for a professional UAV.
Using a jet engine was out of the question, a ‘cold fan’ solution the
only practical option. “A jet engine combusts fuel to turn its turbine
and create thrust,” he explains. “Our cold fan is driven, via a drive
shaft, by a miniscule but powerful two-stroke engine. Developing this
technology required us to build a unique test rig, with an in-line
torque sensor ... |

Innovative Trigger Device provides
network-based process control |
| |
Baumer:
The new GigE Trigger Device simplifies integration of process relevant
sensors and actuators into the camera network. With 8 inputs and 8
outputs, it provides many connections for the integration of light
barriers and encoders enabling basic process control while avoiding the
expense of adding a programmable logic controller (PLC). The input
signals from the sensors are evaluated by the Trigger Device and used
for the real-time control of a single camera or a group of GigE cameras.
Thanks to the numerous outputs, gates or other actuators can be
triggered for additional process steps based on analysis of captured
images. To trigger GigE cameras directly, the Trigger Device is equipped
with a 3-port switch. Where one port is used for the internal trigger
signals the other two ports enable the connection to the PC to receive
the images from the connected ... |

Micronas presenting 3D Hall sensor,
Innovative sensor with vertical Hall elements designed for automotive
and industrial applications, as well as for use in home appliances |
| |
Micronas,
a leading supplier of innovative application-specific IC and sensor
system solutions for automotive electronics, launched the new HAL 36xy
family with their HAL 3625 Hall-effect sensor based on Micronas’ 3D-Hall
technology and equipped with vertical Hall elements. This technology
allows rotation angles from 0° to 360° to be detected directly with
minimum measuring efforts. Unlike today’s usual
Hall sensors, which use
one Hall element to measure at one level only (Z-axis), the new
technology allows the detection of an additional X and Y axis. Combining
different axes and using the appropriate signal processing, a so-called
3D Hall sensor has been realized. The great advantage of these vertical
Hall-effect sensors is that they can be manufactured in a standard CMOS
process without additional post-processing. This process delivers
products with ultimate quality and reliability, especially for the
demanding automotive market. The HAL 36xy product family will include
several versions which will also differ in a number of essential
characteristics and properties. The first member of this family offered
by Micronas will be the HAL 3625 which delivers a ratiometric output
format. The 3D Hall sensor HAL 3625 features integrated signal
processing. ... |

Retro-reflective sensor – Has an eye for
transparent objects |
| |
Baumer
introduces its new and improved retro-reflective sensor FRDK 14 for
transparent objects. Thanks to the new housing concept, the
photoelectric sensor can be adjusted easily and quickly via a teach-in
button. The high sensitivity of this retro-reflective sensor allows for
it to detect glass, transparent packaging or PET bottles safely. Due to
the short response time of only 0.1 ms, edges of moving, transparent
foils can be positioned exactly. At the same time, it is irrelevant
whether the object is directly in front of the sensor or closer to the
reflector. The short adaptation time of only 20 ms permits the sensor to
be taught subsequently or to be adjusted to changing tasks via an
external teach-in connection while the process is running. In addition
to the red light sensor there is also a laser version available. This
sensor is particularly suitable for ... |

Capacitive sensors with new technology |
| |
The
latest range of
capacitive sensors from Micro-Epsilon is based on a
completely new technology. A special ceramic substrate provides the
capaNCDT CSH (Hybrid) sensors with extreme temperature stability. New
sensor geometries are also possible which enable the production of a
sensor with a height of 4mm. These flat sensors are called capaNCDT CSH-FL.
Using two drilled holes on the sensor, the flat sensors can be mounted
quickly and easily; as before, the cylindrical sensors can be mounted by
clamping The sensors are also available for use in ultra-high vacuums (UHV)
and clean rooms where, for example, freedom from contamination of the
materials is also important. Due to the integrated cable on the sensor
side, there are two significant benefits: installation space is
significantly reduced and the risks arising from an additional plug
connector, e.g. accidental detachment, are eliminated. The new
technology and the modular design of the sensor enable Micro-Epsilon to
respond very quickly to customer requirements. The CSH sensors are
currently available with measuring ranges between 0.2mm and 1.2mm. Other
measuring ranges are being developed. The hybrid sensors ... |
