Magnetic Rotary Encoders for HeavyDuty
Applications |
| |
Baumer:
In the field of drive engineering, measured value acquisition poses
increasingly difficult challenges when it comes to dynamics and
precision. These two generally conflicting requirements are difficult to
unite when using conventional
rotary encoders. If, in addition, sensors
need to be robust enough to be used in the toughest operating
environments, new solutions and approaches are required. For
applications like these, Baumer Hübner, a German-based company
specializing in rotary encoders, produces robust, specially engineered
encoders, that use a magnetic sensing method, combined with complex
interpolation and evaluation electronics. These enable position, speed
and other variables like acceleration to be measured synchronously, and
deliver both high-dynamic and high-resolution readings. The encoder
rotor can be supplied with a diameter of up 800 mm and can be
screw-mounted straight onto a drive shaft or attached with a clamping
ring or clamping fixture. Encoder rotor and dedicated sensing head are
of short axial length and can be adapted easily to existing fittings.
Thanks to the interpolation electronics, measured value acquisition can
be customized ... |

Air velocity transmitter for 0.2 to 20
m/s |
| |
The
new miniature air velocity transmitters, series EE575 and EE576 of
E+E Elektronik, allow accurate
measurements of flow in air and
gases. The EE575 measures velocities up to 20 m/s (4000 ft/min). The
EE576 is specifically designed for the measurement of low flows up to 2
m/s (400 ft/min). Applications for these transmitters are found in HVAC
systems, handling and controls for intake and exhaust of air and laminar
flow monitoring. Equipped with a newly developed sensor head and
utilizing the proven E+E hot-film element, already tested a million
times in the automotive industry, these transmitters are less sensitive
to dust and dirt than conventional hot-wire elements. The design with a
probe length of 150 mm (6 inch) and the integrated electronics can be
considered very compact. This allows for the use in applications where
mounting space is limited. The alignment strip along the side of the
probe and the matching mounting flange secures the positioning of the
sensor and the immersion depth of the probe is infinitely variable. That
saves time and prevents ... |

New Capacitive Sensor Technology Allows
for Continuous and Contact-Free
Level Measurement |
| |
Sensortechnics’
CLC series uses a new contact-free
capacitive sensor technology to
continuously measure the fill level of liquids as well as granular or
pulverized materials. The miniature sensor can be easily mounted to the
outside of a container or vessel and is able to measure through almost
any non-metallic wall material. The level sensing range of the standard
device is up to 10 cm which can be enlarged in special multi-sensor
configurations. The non-invasive design, with no contact between the
sensor and the fluid, eliminates all media compatibility and sterility
issues. The device is highly flexible and the user can easily calibrate
the sensor to measure to the desired levels, media and application
set-up. The CLC series achieves a very high accuracy and reliability due
to an additional reference electrode which compensates for all changes
in ambient environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. As
an optional safety feature the sensor can be supplied with an extra
sensing pad to detect if a container is actually present or not. The CLC
sensor offers an analog voltage output as well as a digital interface.
Sensortechnics can also provide modifications of its

Eddy current sensors in tribology testers |
| |
Eddy
current sensors from Micro-Epsilon are once again being used in a
new high-performance test system at the Institute for Tribology at the
Clausthal Technical University. The new tester, which is currently under
construction, will be used to examine the tribological, flow mechanics
and rotor dynamic processes of highly loaded sliding bearings at maximum
circumferential speeds of the shaft. Based on previous positive
experiences with Micro-Epsilon
eddy current sensors used on existing
testers for examining hydrodynamic radial plain bearings or plain
bearings with particularly high loads, eddyNCDT series sensors will also
be used in the new tester. In doing so, the shaft reaches
circumferential speeds of up to 200m/s; conventional test systems
achieve a maximum of 120m/s. The position of the test bearing housing
and the relative movement between the rotor and the test bearing is
detected in the tester using eddy current
displacement sensors. The
bearing gap of the plain bearing between bearing surface and rotor is
also measured using eddy current sensors. Or this, 22 sensor channels
will be integrated in the test structure. ... |

Cut out the waiting with the MDM300
Advanced Dew-point Hygrometer |
| |
Michell
Instruments’ MDM300 advanced
dew-point hygrometer can save engineers weeks of waiting time each
year. Recent research into the operation of Michell Instruments’ ceramic
sensor technology has helped the MDM300 provide faster measurements. Dew
points as low as -70°C can now be measured accurately in less than 10
minutes – faster in many cases. This super-fast response does not rely
on the sensor being dried by a desiccant, which means that every
measurement is fast – not just the first of the day – allowing for many
more measurements to be taken each day. However, this is not the only
way in which the MDM300 cuts out waiting. Efficient nickel metal hydride
batteries and power management circuitry provide the user with 48 hours
of use between charges – giving much more time in the field making
measurements. In addition a flat battery can be recharged to 90% of its
full potential in just 20 minutes, thanks to the intelligent charger.
With its Bluetooth connection, the MDM300 connects wirelessly to a PC.
This means no more time lost in locating, untangling and plugging in
cables. Set-up of the instrument and downloading of logged data is
therefore quick and simple. A number of cost-effective and
easily-portable sampling systems are available for the MDM300 to ensure
accurate measurements and help prolong the life of the sensor ... |

Wireless & Batteryless temperature
measurement: revolutionary products by SENSeOR |
| |
|
These latest wireless
temperature sensing solutions for harsh environments are
specifically tailored for new applications until now unexpected
regarding critical equipment monitoring as well as process control.
New-generation products commercially available. SENSeOR announces
three unique wireless temperature sensing solutions based on SAW
(Surface Acoustic Wave) sensors particularly designed for the most
demanding industrial applications. More than a rudimentary wireless
measure, SENSeOR’s innovative solutions own a very special feature: they
are totally passive. Sensors are indeed only powered by the energy of
radio waves emitted by the associated reader unit when remotely
interrogating the devices in real-time. The ensuing benefits are then
unique. First of all, without any batteries nor active electronic
components at sensor level, these cutting-edge sensing solutions are
perfectly appropriate for use in explosive atmospheres or irradiated
environments at temperatures reaching +175°C today (current in-house R&D
efforts target +350°C) with almost unlimited autonomy. In addition, by
avoiding problematical wires these maintenance-free and light-weight
sensors can either be mounted onto an extensive range of rotating and
moving machinery parts or be implemented in inaccessible places. As a
result, two thermowell-packaged wireless temperature probes SED-100 and
SED-120 are launched on the market (sizes available on request). Not
only they are especially dedicated to wireless
temperature measurements inside critical equipments ... |

How to keep your »cool« when the going
gets hot. ITD 61 A 4 Y 9 hollow-shaft encoders. Water-cooled. |
| |
Baumer:
In a hot environment, for example in operating with diesel engines at
high intrinsic temperatures, it is essential to provide
temperature-sensitive electronic components in encoders with thermal
protection if you want to keep system availability high. Originally as
special development for a special application case manufactured,
water-cooled hollow shaft
incremental encoders of the row ITD 61 A 4 Y 9
take current a permanent place in the program of Baumer Thalheim. With
an application temperature range to +150 °C, with electrically isolated
hollow shaft and resistant stainless steel housing, the incremental
encoders dispose over ideal mechanical characteristics for permanent
operations on rough conditions. Hollow shaft diameters of 30 to 45

Sensor system for the internal inspection
of bore holes |
| |
A
development project for a bore hole sensor envisaged by Micro-Epsilon
last year has now resulted in a marketable product. The miniature
confocal sensor with a diameter of just 3.4mm can now be used to measure
the internal walls of bore holes with a diameter of at least 4.0mm. The
sensor, which is rotated by an electric stepper motor, can measure the
diameter, roundness, concentricity, tapers and the straightness of bore
holes. A complex integrated precision ball bearing system provides the
required rotational stability. The system comprises a stainless steel
measuring head with integrated mechanics, a sensor probe, a confocal
sensor and two controllers. Similar to linear standard systems, confocal
technology is suitable for different types of surface. The system does
not require any reference points during measurements as it can also
recognise edges and steps. At full power, tapered bore holes can only be
partially measured, as the light spot is reflected past the optical
system. However, in the case of a suitable surface, it is possible to
measure the diffuse reflection if the power is reduced. Due to the
installation length of the sensor, bore holes up to 45mm in depth can be
measured. In doing so, the sensor probe is guided into the ... |
