CANHEADdirect reduces data acquisition
and analysis testing costs |
| |
|
HBM’s CANHEADdirect reduces the need for extended data cable runs
in distributed measurement tests because it is sited close to the
measuring points. Each CANHEADdirect takes readings from up to 50
measuring points and up to 5 amplifiers can be connected to each other
for increased coverage. CANHEADdirect connects the measuring system to a
PC for capture and analysis using a simple USB connection. Coverage of
up to 250 meters for the complete system can be achieved by connecting
the amplifiers with HBM’s CANbus for data exchange and voltage supply.
CANHEADdirect simultaneously measures and records physical parameters
such as
strain,
force and
pressure. The system gives an inexpensive
solution for data acquisition in experimental structural and stress
analysis undertaken by universities, laboratories and structural
engineers. The system is suitable for static structural tests, fatigue
tests, long-term monitoring, and measuring general structural mechanics
such as wind energy plants, railway carriages, along with mechanical
engineering components. ... |

Xsens is proud to present its new
corporate design |
| |
|
After almost ten years Xsens presents a new logo that better
reflects the growth and ambition of our company - while respecting our
technology and innovation driven roots. We feel that the new logo
perfectly represents Xsens: a group of talented people dedicated to
deliver cutting-edge inertial motion tracking products with
best-in-class performance and outstanding quality to you, our valued
client. The heart of our technology is the sensor that measures
rotational motion. The gyroscope, a concept known for centuries, is in
its miniaturized form a very powerful sensor. Combined with even smaller
accelerometers and aiding sensor technologies, the gyroscope is the
foundation of our technology - and of our logo. But the logo has more:
the sphere represents the world, a world in motion. Also we honor our
original Xsens logo by keeping both the X and the dot alive (engineers
know that X-dot stands for velocity). And last but not least, the new
logo is 3D. Xsens is all about 3D, and the logo shows that perspective
matters. We have also decided to re-group all our business under one
brand - Xsens. The common denominator between the diverse markets we
serve, ranging from inertial measurement units for robot stabilization
to motion capture systems for game developers, is Xsens’ sensor fusion
core. ... |

Fire sprinkler systems get safety torque |
| |
Sensor
Technology Ltd: Replacing a torque meter with a
torque sensor has revolutionised the validating process for bespoke Fireset sprinkler
systems built by Grundfos Pumps Ltd. in Leighton Buzzard. Grundfos
designs and builds a vast range of electric and diesel driven Firesets
that form the heart of any sprinkler system. These Firesets have
sophisticated control systems that activate automatically when the
presence of a fire is detected. They also have to meet the requirements
of demanding Loss Prevention Certification Board to fire protection of
building and their occupants. Huw Lloyd, Engineering Manager for
Grundfos Pumps Ltd. explains: “Even a moderate sized system can have
many of the sprinklers heads. Typically just a few of these will go off
to contain a small local fire, but the Fireset has to be able to deliver
a predetermined pressure range to every head, even if ... |

Tightly packed distance measurement |
| |
Baumer
Electric: Often there is only very limited space available for
sensors and actuators in apparatuses and mobile devices. The new
distance measuring Series IWFM 08
inductive
sensors address exactly these applications. With their compact outer
dimension of only 4.7 x 8 x 16 mm they fit into the tiniest slots.
Thanks to the integrated 0… 10 V output, the sensor can be connected
directly to the analog inputs of a control system, without using a
measuring board or processing unit. The resulting reduction of hardware
and installation costs are obvious. Another attribute that characterizes
the IWFM 08 is its robustness. The metal housing prevents damage during
installation or operations to a large extent, which positively
influences the maintenance costs in the long term. Due to the high
linearity and repeat accuracy, the IWFM 08 records linear movements of
up to 2 mm with high precision. The described characteristics have
already proved to be of value with existing Baumer sensors used in
robotic grippers, operating controls for cranes and ... |

New Differential Pressure Transmitter
DPT-10 from WIKA |
| |
A
new, cost-effective solution for a wide range of applications
encompassing differential
pressure,
level and
flow measurements, the differential
pressure transmitter DPT-10 has been presented by WIKA at
ACHEMA 2009. This new development, which will be available in the 4th
quarter of 2009, stands out through its simple on-site operation -
especially for users unfamiliar with it – and also through its ability
to fit optimally in a range of installation situations. The DPT-10 is
available with a case in a single or a double chamber design. The
optional display and control module can therefore be fitted on the top
or on the side, depending upon the installation conditions. A choice of
plastic, aluminium or electropolished or cast stainless steel is
available for case materials. For explosion protection there are either
“intrinsically safe” or flameproof case variants available. The DPT-10
differential
pressure transmitter is available with all the usual process
instrumentation output signals ... |

| |
Pressure
Transmitters with Mathematical Compensation: KELLER AG has now
redefined the state-of-the-art in high precision
pressure measurement
technology with its Series 33 X and 35 X
pressure transmitters. A
floating measurement cell, totally digital signal processing,
compensation with mathematical accuracy and a highly dynamic
microprocessor – these assets produce reference accuracies of up to 0,05
%FS error bandwidth. The floating piezoresistive sensor element is free
of outside influence from mechanical and thermal forces at the pressure
connection. The A/D converter in the signal processor operates with a
resolution of 16 bits (0,002 %FS), using the signals from the pressure
sensor and the integrated temperature sensor to calculate accurate
compensated measurement values in just a few milliseconds. The
transmitter’s analogue output is updated at least 400 times per second,
with overall accuracy of 0,05 %FS (including temperature influence in
the 10 °C…40 °C range). As an option, precision of 0,01 %FS in the same
temperature range is available, in relation to the reference values of
primary standards (accuracy: 0,025 %). ... |

Safely controlling small amounts of gas,
variable area
flowmeters with SIL 2 classification |
| |
KROHNE:
In the chemicals industry, measuring gases is often more than simply
measuring the flow: process analysis technology is an important
instrument when indicating quality and when it comes to guaranteeing
process reliability. At the same time, it also helps in process
monitoring and optimisation. To reduce risks for humans and the
environment, certain critical processes must be fitted with safety
functions. To do so, the safety variables such as the probability of
failure and the portion of dangerous and non-dangerous errors must be
calculated for all relevant components and analysed. In the course of
the current standardisation to IEC 61508, process analytics are coming
increasingly into focus, i.e. process analysis systems including
integrated flowmeters are also taken into account when considering the
safety of critical applications. This also includes classification
according to the Safety Integrity Level (SIL) of the measuring devices
used, for example, in the supply lines of gas analysers for flow
monitoring. Specifically for the field of process analytics, KROHNE now
introduces its DK32/34/37 variable area flowmeters with suitability as
per SIL 2 for measuring liquids from 0.2 l/h and gases from 2 l/h. For
larger flow rates, the tried and true variable area classic H250 with
SIL 2 classification ... |

High pressure S8000 from Michell saves
money in compressed air and gas manufacture |
| |
Michell
Instruments’ S8000 Integrale cooled mirror hygrometer is able to
cope with sample gas at pressures of up to 17 barg. This means a reduced
response time which can help save users time and money in dry
applications – such as compressed air and bottled gases – where low
dew-points are reached. Pressurising the sample speeds up the response
time because the gas will have a higher dew point than the same sample
at atmospheric pressure. This is because the water molecules are
squeezed closer together under pressure making the sample ‘wetter’ than
it would be at atmospheric pressure. For example, a pressure dew point
of -65°C at 17barg is equivalent to an atmospheric dew point of -100°C.
With the higher dew point under pressure, the S8000 is able to reach the
temperature and stabilise much fast than with the lower atmospheric dew
point. The response speed of the instrument has been further enhanced
with updates to the S8000 firmware to allow the tracking of any minute
dew point changes in the sample gas. All this is good news for
manufacturers of ... |
