PerkinElmer, Inc. (NYSE:PKI), a global leader focused on
improving the health and safety of people and the environment, today
announced the results of a new study estimating the impact of
PerkinElmer sensors in reducing fires and associated injuries and
deaths. Conducted by ERA Technology Ltd., the study determined that over
the past five years, the use of PerkinElmer sensors in smoke detection
systems helped to prevent 372,000 fires, 4000 fire-related deaths, and
over 33,000 fire-related injuries. This translates into approximately
$16 billion of effective monetary savings over the five year period,
according to the study. The announcement was made at the Sensor + Test
2009 conference which is being held in Nürnberg, Germany. The
International Association of Fire and Rescue Services (CTIF) estimates
that there are over 3.3 million household fires worldwide on an annual
basis, with nearly 33,000 fire-related deaths per year. According to the
ERA Technology study, the enormous cost of fires is estimated at 0.65%
of worldwide GDP. In recent years, the increased use of smoke detection

Winners of this year’s SENSOR Innovation
Award Chosen |
| |
AMA
Association for Sensor Technology: The team from Technische
Universität Hamburg-Harburg wins the SENSOR Innovation Award 2009,
endowed by the AMA Association for Sensor Technology with 10,000 euros.
Among the 63 submissions, 22 from abroad, this project clearly stood
out. From the start, the group from Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg,
or more precisely the Institute for Microsystem Technology, with its
PIMMS (planar integrated micro-mass spectrometer) was among the
favourites. However, it was hard for the jury to make its final choice.
The competition was just too high quality to make it easy, but the PIMMS
project succeeded because it unifies all functional components into the
worldwide smallest mass spectrometer. This promising innovation
convinced the entire jury. “Due to the record participation this year,
our task to select a winner out of the many truly excellent submissions
was especially tough,” says jury chairman, Prof. Dr. Andreas Schütze
from the Saarbrücken University. Nevertheless, the Hamburg University
won the race with its PIMMS. “What really convinced the jury,” explains
Schütze, “was the consistent integration of the mass spectrometer,
including all ... |

Crevice-free compact
pressure transmitter
for industrial and
automotive applications |
| |
With
the Series 22 S and 22 M, Keller AG für Druckmesstechnik,
Winterthur (Switzerland), has introduced a wide range of
pressure
transmitters that are totally crevice-free after assembly. The brazing
technique that the company has developed has made the use of internal
O-ring seals obsolete for many applications. The parts that come into
contact with the media are made from stainless steel (AISI 316L) in the
Series 22 S transmitters. In the Series 22 M the steel
piezoresistive
pressure measuring cell is brazed to the brass pressure connection using
a nickel diaphragm. Brazing in tunnel furnaces has considerable cost
advantages in comparison to the usual electron beam welding at measuring
ranges up to 250 bar. The Series 22
pressure transmitters are available
in finely graduated pressure ranges from 5 bar to 250 bar sealed gauge.

Coaxial multi-point thermocouple TC93
avoids expensive customised designs |
| |
WIKA:
Extensive customised solutions were often necessary to
measure
temperature distribution in technical processes. The TC93 coaxial
multi-point thermocouple now represents a flexible and inexpensive
alternative. This new development (patent pending) provides five
measuring points in the installation space of a standard thermometer,
without requiring any auxiliary construction. In addition to the
straightforward design using standard components available from stock,
the TC93 also offers better comparability of the measuring points and an
improved accuracy. The convincing advantages of the TC93 include the
defined heat transfer in the sensor and low cross-sensitivity. Add to
this quick delivery times and the high cost savings potential. This
becomes especially evident when large housings can be saved on, because
the standard connection head can be used to connect 5 measuring points. ... |

New optoNCDT1402 laser sensor from
Micro-Epsilon |
| |
The
new optoNCDT1402
laser sensor from Micro-Epsilon replaces the company’s
previous optoNCDT 1401 product. The new sensor provides improved
performance and extreme flexibility. This flexibility comes from a brand
new Teach-In function, which can be used to limit or change the
measuring range for each application. In this way, both the resolution
and the linearity of the sensor in the pre-set measuring range can be
significantly improved. This is of particular benefit in applications
where only a small measuring range but high performance is required. The
flexibility of the optoNCDT 1402 is further enhanced by an integrated
swivelling cable connector, which can be used to change the direction of
the cable output to suit the individual application. By utilising a CMOS
sensor, the optoNCDT 1402 has an increased measuring rate of 1.5kHz
making it suitable for rapid processes. An RS422 digital interface is
provided, as well as analogue current / voltage output. As before, the
new series comprises seven sensors, which have measuring ranges between
