Leakage sensors - Wet feet? No, thanks! |
| |
Baumer
Electric: Imagine the tank containing liquid chemicals starts
leaking and nobody notices! Thanks to a new
optical sensor for leak monitoring from Baumer, this will only
remain in your imagination. The FODK 23 is screwed or glued onto a floor
panel next to the facility that is to be monitored. Typically, only 1ml
of liquid on the floor is sufficient for the sensor to react. Therefore,
the leak is detected at an early stage, which prevents more severe
damage. The small, round housing of the FODK 23 with integrated
evaluation electronics consists entirely of a chemically resistant
Teflon PFA sheath. As a result, the sensor is particularly suitable for
applications involving discriminating materials. The clever installation
clip made from PRA or PVC allows the sensor to be mounted and dismounted
quickly without using any tools. Under normal circumstances the
integrated fail-safe strategy provides an active output. ... |

Differential Pressure Sensor for Turbine Inlet Filter Pressure
Health Monitoring |
| |
Kavlico,
a global business unit of Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST) has
recently introduced a rugged aerospace grade
differential pressure (DP) sensor for monitoring pressure drop
across a turbine engine style inlet air filter or also known as an inlet
barrier filter. The DP sensor monitors filter health by detecting
increases in pressure across the filter element. The pressure difference
increases in proportion with the amount of filtrate captured by the
filter. The DP sensor provides a continuous measure of filter health,
with a predetermined pressure difference used to indicate critical air
flow restriction by the filter. In applications of turbine engines where
the sensor indicates the air flow has been critically restricted by a
clogged filter, an inlet bypass can be opened to maintain flow to the
engine until filter maintenance can be performed. The DP sensor
incorporates a piezo-resistive sense element and is available in
pressure ranges of 0-1, ±1, ±5, and ±10 PSID, with other option
available. Other significant features include and operating temperature
range of -40 to +125ºC with a storage temperature of -55 to +150ºC, an
accuracy of ±1.5% of full scale over the operating temperature, and an
operating voltage of 5 to 15 Vdc. The lightweight device (<6.5 ounces)
is rugged by design and has a housing constructed of an anodized
aluminum with an MTBF of 300,000 hours at normal operating temperature.
The DP sensor typically provides an output of ... |

Strain gages improve printed circuit
board quality |
| |
HBM:
has developed
micro-strain gages with a size of 1.2 mm x 2 mm to detect
the mechanical stresses that occur during the production of complex
printed circuit boards (PCBs) leading to marked improvements in
production quality. The micro-strain gages can be attached directly to
the PCB to monitor stress levels; for unpopulated PCBs, these are around
850 µm/m, for populated PCBs, around 450 µm/m.
Strain gages are needed
for these applications because continuing technological development has
resulted in PCBs that are extremely complex and very densely populated.
This leads to increased mechanical stress and can result in damage to
the electronic components. There is a higher probability that the
completed circuit will then fail. Using HBM’s latest
micro-strain gages,
stress measurements can be obtained throughout production including depanelization, plug assembly, in-circuit testing and installing PCBs in
an enclosure. Measurements can even be performed in a solder bath, where
vast fluctuations in temperature can lead to strain. HBM can also supply
strain gages of the Y series, for example, in linear form (LY4) or in
rosette form (RY9) that are also suitable for these applications. ... |

KROHNE presents innovative solutions for
energy measurement at INTERKAMA |
| |
KROHNE:
The energy market remains a growth market: Due to the increasing need
for power, there are currently more than 230 new power plants either
under construction or planned worldwide. According to estimates, more
than 800 billion Euros will be spent annually in the power plant
business until 2030. This includes not only new constructions but also
renovations of existing power plants. Measuring technology plays an
important role here: the deciding factor when it comes to the efficiency
of a power plant is the accuracy of the measurements. The more accurate
the measurements, the more efficient the power plant. That translates
into increased profit for the operator. Many countries continue to rely
on nuclear technology to safeguard their future power requirements. For
new constructions and the overhauling of existing plants, KROHNE offers
high temperature
ultrasonic measuring devices,
variable area flowmeter and
level meters which can be used in steam and water circuits. As the
only manufacturer of measurement technology in Germany, KROHNE has all
of the important approvals for the instrumentation of nuclear power
plants: KTA, RCC and the ASME N-stamp. At INTERKAMA 2009, KROHNE
presented new measurements solutions for the power generation market.

The all-rounder for measuring torque at
an optimal price – the T40 torque flange with increased measurement
ranges |
| |
The
all-rounder for
measuring torque – at an optimal price – the T40 torque
flange from HBM is now available with two new nominal (rated)
torques of 5 kN•m and 10 kN•m. The T40 measurement flange series
therefore now covers the nominal torque ranges from 500 N•m to 10 kN•m
and can be used for practically all test bench applications. The compact
design of the T40 simplifies integration in a test bench. The
torque
flange is extremely robust and copes with very large impact and
vibration loads. As per EN 60068-2-6, the vibrational stress was tested
in all three spatial directions. The T40 had to withstand accelerations
of up to 20 g for two and a half hours in the frequency range 10 Hz to 2
kHz. Data transmission between rotor and stator is digital in the T40,
so that secure, error-free measured value acquisition and transmission
is possible even under difficult ambient conditions, for example
electromagnetic interference or fluctuating temperatures. In addition,
the measurement flange does not use slip rings or bearings and is
therefore totally maintenance and wear-free. This results overall in
very high reliability that leads to significantly reduced test bench
down times. The measured torque can be output either via a voltage
output or a frequency output. The interface module TIM 40 can be used to
supplement the
torque flange with even more interfaces. This provides
the user ... |

JUMO PCA3000, evaluation and
visualization software with new functionality |
| |
The
JUMO PCA3000 and JUMO PCC software platforms, which aid the
evaluation and transmission of the process data recorded by the JUMO
paperless recorders of the “LOGOSCREEN” series and the “IMAGO 500” and
“IMAGO F3000” process controller series, have been developed and
equipped with new functions, aimed at making the data analysis even
faster and totally targeted, but above all easier, in keeping with the
motto “time is money”. So now, for example, the important product and
batch-related process data that is recorded online can be delivered as
soon as the batch is completed – quasi “on demand” – in various output
formats (such as PDF or Excel) by e-mail to the important recipients
(such as the QA Department, Production Management and the Test
Laboratory). A production system that is supported by PCA3000 and PCC
conveys the process data quickly, reliably and above all safely – and
this is done without involving people. This customer benefit helps to
reduce the cost of recording the process data, which is an essential
accompaniment to production. ... |

Compact pressure gauge with dry measuring
cell for sensitive processes |
| |
The
new
diaphragm pressure gauge from WIKA has been designed for
pressure measurement in sensitive processes such as those in
sanitary applications. Unlike diaphragm seals, it uses a dry measuring
cell. That means, if the diaphragm should leak, no transmission fluid
escapes into the process. Thus the new Model PG43SA
pressure gauge increases process safety. In addition to this, its
flush diaphragm construction exhibits very good rinsing behaviour, with
no deposits left on the 316L stainless steel process connection. The
entire measuring instrument can be steam-sterilised (autoclaved) at
134°C. The compact design of the new pressure gauge, available in
nominal sizes of 40 and 63, enables space-saving installation due to its
Tri-Clamp process connection. The instrument is suitable for gaseous,
liquid and viscous media up to max. 150°C ... |

Pressure Sensor for Heat Pump Systems Meeting EU 842/2006 Directive |
| |
Kavlico,
a global business unit of Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST) has
developed a new version of the PT250
pressure transmitter designed specifically for installation in heat
pump systems. Incorporating a piezo-resistive sense element, these
extremely rugged, all-welded, 304L stainless steel constructed devices
have an integral pipe pressure connection that is welded at the pressure
source. According to EU 842/2006, heat pump applications using
fluorinated greenhouse gases must be checked for leakage at least once
every 12 months or every 6 months depending upon the gas quantity they
contain. However, the directive shall not apply to equipment with
hermetically sealed systems. The PT250 from Kavlico does not utilize a
gasket thereby complying with the EU 842/2006 directive. By installing a
PT250 transmitter in the heat pump system, a significant cost-savings is
achieved by no longer having to monitor leakage rates, a big plus for
the end-user. Heat pumps will make a major contribution toward Europe
meeting its climate and energy challenges for renewable heating and
cooling technology, and Kavlico’s newly designed transmitter will assist
with this “GREEN”, efficient energy solution ... |

presents PSD-30 - a new generation of
electronic pressure switches. This innovative instrument has already
gained recognition among experts: It has been awarded with the iF
product design award 2009. The new pressure switch convinces thanks to
high functionality and easy handling. The 3-key handling with tactile
feedback guarantees a trouble-free setup without tools. An easy menu
structure according to the VDMA standard and useful functions, such as
an "INFO" button, allow intuitive handling by the user and a quick check
of the set parameters by just pressing a single button. A large
14-segment display in robust LED technology with a digit height of 9 mm
makes it very easy to read, in particular alphanumeric messages. The
compact

COMPACTlaser Multiple Light Beam Safety
Devices for safeguarding in a collision simulator |
| |
Leuze:
When designing a collision system, there are challenges not only with
the construction of a damping system and the integration of
acceleration sensors: safeguarding also means a great challenge.
Strict safety regulations must be satisfied with such a system, since
there is an acute risk of injury during operation. The safeguarding was
realised with Multiple Light Beam Safety Devices from Leuze electronic.
At the University of Applied Sciences in Constance (Hochschule Konstanz
Technik, Wirtschaft und Gestaltung, HTWG), a collision simulator is
currently being developed in the measurement and sensor laboratory of
the Institute for Natural Sciences and Mathematics (Institut für
Naturwissenschaften und Mathematik, INM) under the direction of
Professor Klaus Durst. Positioned on a guide block is a seat with a test
person. The seat with person is driven with a defined acceleration and
speed against a shock absorber, thereby simulating a vehicle collision.
Various sensors record the different measured parameters during the
event. ... |
