Weld Inspection and Crack Detection with
Ultrasound |
| |
The
newly developed SONOSCAN angle probes of SONOTEC for
non-destructive material testing check metals for cracks and inclusions.
They are mainly used in the metal industry. The
ultrasonic probes are able to detect critical defects as well as
quality deficiencies of welds. They are effective ultrasonic converters
which compatible with the common mobile ultrasonic testing equipment.
Inside the angle probes there is a transducer which is able to emit
ultrasonic transverse waves in a specific angle to the workpart via a
forward wedge. Existent material deficiencies can be identified on the
basis of the reflection echo. It is possible to adapt to curved surfaces
i.e. adaptation to different pipe forms through seat grinding of the
probes. Thus the DIN EN 1714 standard regarding non-destructive testing
of welds can be well achieved. The unique and benefical ergonomical
shape of the angle probes enables a comfortable and a handy usage. The
precise
ultrasonic probes are developed and manufactured by SONOTEC in two
different types of construction. They can be chosen according to the
angle, the frequencies and the size of transducers for different
material thickness as well as spatial conditions. ... |

Extended Testing of Landing Flap Gearbox
with CoMo Torque Evaluation System |
| |
Kistler:
Aircraft flaps take the form of extendable extensions on the trailing
edges of the wings. During the approach they allow the lift necessary to
make it possible to reduce flying speed for landing. Liebherr-Aerospace
also manufactures flight control, actuation, hydraulic and a variety of
other systems for use in business jets, feeder aircraft, wide-bodied
civil aircraft, helicopters and military aircraft. Special gearboxes
with differential output drives are used in flap actuation components.
To enable them to meet stringent service life and wear requirements
these gearboxes have to be tested on a special stand, with drive and
load machines applying specific load profiles to simulate realistic flap
movements. To enable reliability assessment the input torque is measured
as a function of speed with a Kistler sensor Type 4503A… . Incorporation
of the speed measuring system into the sensor allows a compact, clearly
arranged configuration of the drive train in the test bay. The CoMo
Torque Type 4700A… evaluation unit can be used to display the
characteristic measurands provided by the bay. It supplies the
torque
measuring sensor with power and receives from this sensor its measurands
of torque and speed ... |

WIKA diaphragm in-line seal with
integrated
temperature measurement |
| |
WIKA
has enabled the clean, hygienic, dead-space free measurement of pressure
and temperature, with long-term stability, with the model 983.xx
diaphragm in-line seal. With its 3A approval it is equally suited to
applications in the food and beverage industry as it is for biochemical,
pharmaceutical or active ingredient manufacturing. Through the
combination of diaphragm in-line seal and
resistance thermometer, pressure and temperature can be measured at
one common point in the pipeline without any restriction in its
diameter. WIKA diaphragm in-line seals are directly integrated into the
pipeline and, as a result of their circular cylindrical design, they are
self-draining in all mounting positions. In conjunction with the
pressure gauge they ensure both dead-space free as well as
crevice-free pressure measurement. The temperature sensor is fixed
to the inner wall of the diaphragm in-line seal, whereby fast,
residue-free cleaning of the measuring point is guaranteed. By combining
measurement parameters ... |

HBM increases calibration capability to 5
MN |
| |
|
HBM has introduced a new calibration machine for forces up to 5
MN at its DKD (German Calibration Service) laboratory in Darmstadt. The
machine means that the laboratory can now calibrate
force transducers from 2.5 N up to 5 MN on site. The German
Calibration Service – in conjunction with experts from HBM and the
German Metrology Institute, the PTB - has attested the calibration
machine as having a measurement uncertainty of only 0.02% of the
measured value. The maximum permissible force of 5 MN corresponds to a
mass of about 500 t; by contrast a 200 m long ICE3 train has a mass of
about 400 t. A hydraulic power unit generates the forces required for
calibration in the machine. During calibration, signals from the
force transducer under calibration are compared to the machine’s
integrated reference transducer. The new machine has been specially
designed to produce the huge maximum force and calibrates both
compressive and tensile
force transducers. The latest machine strengthens HBM’s leading role
in force calibration and backed by its many years of experience since
the calibration laboratory became the first to be accredited by German
Calibration Service in 1977. HBM provides customers with a complete
measurement chain including products and services for
force measurements. The company offers integrated solutions ranging
from

Resistance thermometer now in hygienic
design |
| |
With
the TR22 WIKA has now brought a
resistance thermometer in a fully
hygienic design to the market. The new product is tailored to the
complex requirements of sanitary applications. The
thermometer features
a connection head which can be rotated into any direction. Its hygienic
design without any exposed threads, crevices or ridges enables easy and
residue-free cleaning in-situ. In conjunction with the TW22 thermowell,
the new thermometer can be used in a multitude of applications,
including those with harsh process conditions. It operates in a range
between –50° and 250° C. The instrument is available with all
established hygienic process connections, while explosion protection can
also be integrated. Through its removable measuring insert, the TR22 can
be calibrated with the entire measuring chain, without having to
disconnect the electrical connections. The process thus remains closed
during the test procedure, therefore reducing the risk of ... |

Turbocharger speed sensor for high volume
production |
| |
New
from Micro-Epsilon is a range of turbocharger speed sensors for
high volume production. The turboSPEED TSSC series of sensors operates
according to the
eddy
current principle and so provide several benefits. The sensor is
cast in plastic and has a separate electronics unit, which can be
integrated in the engine compartment separate from the turbocharger.
Speeds of 200 to 400,000rpm can be measured accurately with the sensor.
Due to the complex electronics and special linearisation, the sensor can
measure on turbine wheels made from aluminium or titanium. Titanium is
well known as a poor electrical conductor and is therefore generally
difficult to measure. The electronics for each turbine model is
configured and fixed afterwards for high precision. The low cost version
of the sensor meets all necessary requirements for the
automotive industry. The housing is protected to IP67; the
electronics complies with the EMC requirements in the engine
compartment. Different from conventional sensors for turbochargers, the
new sensor does not measure on the shaft between the two turbine wheels,
since these are often no longer accessible with the latest
turbochargers. The turboSPEED TSSC detects the edge of the compressor
wheel on the “cold” side of the turbocharger ... |

Tension & Compression Load Cell Available
with USB Output |
| |
FUTEK
Advanced Sensor Technology, Inc. (FUTEK) has just added the LCB500
Tension & Compression Load Cells to their USB Sensor Solution Line. The
new module with USB output eliminates the need for an analog amplifier,
power supply, and display equipment making usage that much easier. The
plug and play gives you power to monitor the output of the sensor and
enjoy measurement and are less affected by noise, temperature variation
or power supply requirement. The USB integration also includes FUTEK’s
USB Software which allows users to monitor the output of the Sensor in
real time. This particular model is available in Stainless Steel
construction and features a compact rugged design. The LCB500 is
machined from a single block of metal, so the primary sensing element,
the mountings and the case contain no welds allowing smaller dimensions
and an enhanced grade of protection. The configuration of the point of
measurement reduces errors caused by imperfect application of the load.
Typical applications of
load cells connected in parallel are: silos,
hoppers, large weighing platforms, and with suitable accessories,
suspended loads. The stainless steel construction is suitable for use in
aggressive environments in the chemical and petrochemical industries.
Model LCB500 is a
Tension and Compression Load Cell (can be used as Rod
End with mounting plates) for Inline Actuators or Hydraulic Jacks with
Male/Female Threads. The standard LCB500 Tension and Compression Load
Cell model has ... |

Reliable accuracy: HBM load cells in C6
quality! |
| |
|
HBM offers precix
load cells with a maximum number of 6000 verification intervals in
the legal-for-trade range as standard. The accuracy of these load cells
is also called C6 quality (in compliance with OIML R60) and provides
direct advantages over standard load cells with 3000 verification
intervals: * Cost savings through use of more flexible
load cells: Instead of using several scales for different weighing
ranges and accuracies, it will suffice to use a single scale with precix!
While, for example, a scale with a weighing range of 15 kg and
verification intervals of 5 g was required and, in addition, a scale
with 30 kg/10 g, it will now be sufficient to use a single scale with 30
kg/5 g that even works without verification interval changeover. *
Substantially higher weighing accuracy can also be achieved with
applications that do not require use of legal-for-trade scales. This
applies in particular to weighing processes involving temperature
variations. ... |

Mass flowmeters especially for the chemical industry |
| |
KROHNE:
In Switzerland, an OPTIMASS 7300 C Tantalum meter doses a highly
aggressive liquid into a column in which a vitamin is manufactured. The
meter measures the mass flow of Toco Toluol in a range of 0 – 7000 kg/h
at a pressure of 1.8 bar. Toco Toluol is an aggressive, acidic solvent.
The liquid has a density of 0.881 kg/l and a temperature of 78 degrees
Celsius. The operator chose the Tantalum version because a
mass flowmeter with extremely high chemical resistance was the only
option considered for this application. A Tantalum meter from a
different manufacturer had been used previously. However, due to
problems with deposits in the device, the customer was looking for a
replacement. He opted for the KROHNE OPTIMASS 7300 C Tantalum because it
offers one crucial advantage: the OPTIMASS features one single, straight
measuring tube, eliminating the need for a flow splitter. Thanks to the
straight tube, the customer was able to select a significantly smaller
diameter (DN 25 instead of the DN 50 used previously), thus achieving an
increased flow rate. This prevents the product from being deposited on
the inner wall of the measuring tube. For a long time, there was no
suitable measuring tube material available in the field of
Coriolis meters for measuring highly aggressive or corrosive media.
It has only been since Tantalum has been widely available that a few
manufacturers have started manufacturing Coriolis meters for these
applications. ... |

New high performance DUAL OUTPUT
contactless
rotary position sensors |
| |
Penny
+ Giles, the position sensor specialist, has launched a new
contactless
rotary position sensor with dual outputs, SRH280DP. The new sensor
incorporates a factory programmable
Hall effect sensor and has two outputs that can be programmed
individually. As a result, it provides reliable and accurate rotary
position measurement in extreme industrial and off-highway environments,
allowing users to improve the safety and integrity of their control
systems. OEMs can choose from a wide selection of parameters so they can
best configure the sensor to suit their needs and achieve maximum
performance. They can specify the measurement range and output in a
clockwise or anticlockwise direction. For example, one signal can be
used in a control function while the other is used for position
monitoring or display purposes. The sensor operates from either a 5Vdc
regulated or 9-30Vdc unregulated power supply and has an over-voltage
protection to 40Vdc. It can be supplied programmed with any one of 341
different angles in the range 0-20 to 0-360 degrees in one degree
increments and it has a 12 bit resolution (0.025%) over the selected
measuring range. For ease of configuration, SRH280DP is available with ... |
