Ultrasound helps optimise drive designs |
| |
A
bespoke pump maker is using ultrasound waves to efficiently model drive
torque and thus contain development costs to within predictable limits.
Charles Austen Pumps has recently upgraded test facilities with Surface
Acoustic Wave (SAW) equipment from Sensor Technology, a
recognised leader in the field. Charles Austen Pumps manufactures pumps
individually designed to meet specific customer requirements that cannot
be satisfied by off-the-shelf units. Over the three generations that
this family firm has been operating it has continually honed its skills
at accurately predicting development costs and working within budgets,
and has become adept at using advanced techniques such as SAW analysis.
Much of its work comes down to optimising drive dynamics to produce the
desired characteristics, be it a smooth flow in a critical medical
situation, ultra low noise for pumps in home and office installations,
or the guaranteed extra long life of pumps in inaccessible locations.
The cyclic nature typical in many pumps’ operation tends to induce
torsional oscillations in the drive shaft, which can have a significant ... |

Kavlico
Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) Sensors
Are Rugged by Design |
| |
Kavlico,
a global business unit of Custom Sensors & Technologies (CST) have
designed its
EOP sensors to measure pressures in gasoline or diesel
engines as well as other heavy-duty machinery. The sensors can be
designed with a ceramic capacitive or piezo-resistive (PRT) sense
element depending upon the application-specific requirement of the OEM.
Operating on 5 Vdc, the sensor provides a linear amplified analog output
proportional to pressure. These rugged devices are well-suited for
hostile, high-vibration, high-noise environments. The ceramic capacitive
versions are particularly capable of withstanding high over-pressure
situations. The sensor utilizes Kavlico’s patented ASIC electronic
integration technology for extremely reliable and accurate signal
conditioning. Flexible by design, the lightweight version of this sensor
(50 Grams or 1.76oz. Max.) can be configured with a variety of
electrical and process media connections for easy system integration.
Additionally, 316 stainless steel or brass packaging can be specified to
insure further compliance with customer requirements. The sensor

SCHMIDT®
Flow-sensor SS 20.260 for
process technology |
| |
For
the employment in process technology the latest SCHMIDT®
flow
sensor SS 20.260 offers three crucial upgrades compared to his
forerunner. With an expanded measuring range of 0 … 50 m/s the sensor
can be applied for
flow rate control in a wide range of systems. Many
processes require the measurement of heated gases and therefore an
enhanced operating temperature. Depending on the configuration of the SS
20.260 it is up to 120 °C. The temperature can be measured with an
additional linear output and no separate sensor is required any more.
The unit is robust due to a chamber in which the sensing element is
protected against impacts. The stainless steel sensor tube is available
in different length and thus can be placed at the correct position
regardless of the size of the duct. Two LED’s indicate the correct
operation or inform about wrong supply voltage or sensor defects.
Applications: Flow measuring in air ducts,
volume flow measuring in test
benches, control of combustion air of oil, wood, gas or coal burners,
flow control in cooling or drying constructions. Main technical data:
Immersion sensor with integrated transducer. Use of sensor: Free air and
guided air in ducts from ... |

Quality inspection of flat glass |
| |
Two
new measuring stations from Micro-Epsilon are being used to
inspect the dimensional accuracy and edge quality of flat glass at
Schott based in Jena. Dimensional accuracy is a critical factor in
industrial glass, which is used for demanding technical tasks. An
example of this is glass used in the production of photovoltaic modules.
Even a small deviation from the required geometry or thickness of the
glass can adversely affect the function of the glass at a later date.
Glass is renowned as being difficult to measure because of its
transparency and so only the latest technologies are able to reliably
and accurately inspect the material for its geometry (format, thickness
and evenness) and surface quality. Two different optical methods from
Micro-Epsilon can be used for this application: confocal chromatic
sensors and the light intersection method. In the production line, a
robot places the pane on a transport system, which feeds the pane into
the measuring station. Here, the pane is deposited on a solid block of
stone in order to avoid vibrations. Six optoNCDT 2401 confocal chromatic
sensors are located on a traversing beam directly above the pane, which
measure the thickness and planarity in six tracks. The desired distance
or thickness information for the confocal principle is obtained from
polychromatic white light. A conventional LED provides the light source.
The sensors have a measuring range of 10mm and only measure the
thickness from one side ... |

Nissan saves time and money with Cognex
vision |
| |
Cognex:
At one of the most productive automotive manufacturing plants in Europe,
accuracy and reliability at all points on the production line are of
paramount importance. The issue Nissan faced was that the existing
mechanical centraliser could not cope with the new glass sizes for two
its key vehicles. The centraliser locates at six points around the edge
of the glass and consistently locates it to a known ’central’ location
in preparation for the next stage of the production process. Therefore
it was imperative that the new
vision system
would not only provide
accurate information for the two new models, but also that it would
adapt easily to future product developments. With these elements in
mind, Nissan approached Capley Marker who was chosen to supply the
system for a number of key reasons. They had previously installed 5
cameras at Nissan and converted a separate line to Cognex In-Sight
cameras; Nissan were extremely satisfied with the level of support
received through the existing relationship and finally, Capley is an
approved Cognex PSI (Partner System Integrator). The system was to be
supplied for use on the Nissan Micra and Note production lines. The key
project requirement was to determine the glass type on the line, which
could be 1 of 4 variants; Micra fixed side window right hand side ... |

Error limits of
variable area flowmeters:
KROHNE applies new VDI/VDE 3513 guideline |
| |
KROHNE:
After 30 years of validity, the definition regarding the accuracy of
variable area flowmeters in the VDI/VDE 3513-2 guideline was revised in
the August 2008 edition. Instead of the accuracy classes, requiring a
formula to calculate the permissible deviation for each measuring point,
all that is now required is the simplified indication of the error limit
which states the maximum permissible percent of deviation from the
current measured value. For example, if the error limit is stated as 1%,
that refers to a constant, permissible measuring error of one percent of
the current measured value. It is only for the beginning of the
measuring range that additional error influences, depending on the
design, will be taken into special consideration. This translates into
considerable change for the manufacturers applying this guideline: From
determining and verifying the new error limits to amending
documentation, calibration protocols and procedure instructions right
down to user information. In the end, however, the simplified definition
meets one of NAMUR's demands as a lobbyist for measurement and
automation technology ... |

New Measuring Spark Plug Types 6115B...
and 6118B... |
| |
Kistler:
The use of spark plugs in
cylinder pressure measurement has the major
advantage of avoiding the need to form an additional bore. It exploits
the means of access to the combustion chamber already provided by the
plug, which then serves a double purpose. The development of measuring
spark plugs over time has enabled the sensor to be brought favorably
close to the combustion chamber. Kistler's spark plugs have long been
renowned for their high acoustic resonant frequencies and very good
signal quality. The latest series manages to build on these advantages.
The new M12 and M14 measuring spark plug Types 6115B ... and 6118B...
offer significant advantages in handling and maintenance, in addition to
enhanced indication quality. The modular design consisting of a
demountable connection cable, replaceable sensor and ceramic body
enables efficient maintenance and repairs to be made right on the spot.
Flush-mounted installation of the measuring element enables a very high
natural frequency of acoustic oscillation. As a result, these measuring
spark plugs are suitable for application tasks on large engines, test
rigs and also in vehicles. Accuracy has also been improved as the result
of further development of sensor technology. The new measuring spark ... |
