Successful audit: WIKA certified to ISO
14001 |
| |
|
After obtaining a successful result in an audit running for several
days, WIKA, a company specialised in pressure and
temperature
measurement, has obtained certification according to ISO 14001 for its
main site Klingenberg. The international standard for environmental
management systems is an essential prerequisite in a growing number of
industries for being accepted as supplier. This is why WIKA had pursued
and achieved certification already two years ago for its TRONIC
division, which develops and produces electronic measuring systems. The
extension of the certification to the entire site Klingenberg had been
prepared meticulously over a period of eight months. WIKA had trained
around 2,000 German employees of the company – worldwide they have a
staff of approx. 5,600 – and made them familiar with environmentally
relevant processes. They include, in particular, the handling of waste
and hazardous materials ... |

MPC prevents assembly defects, improves
productivity with Cognex Checker
vision sensors |
| |
Cognex:
Supplying parts to the world’s leading automotive companies leaves no
room for error. That’s why Miniature Precision Components Inc. (MPC)
uses three
vision sensors to error-proof the automated assembly of
oil-caps at its Prairie du Chien, WI facility. With 41 molding machines
ranging in size from 25 to 550 tons, this 100,000 square-foot facility
employs about 450 people. MPC’s four manufacturing plants generate
approximately $167 million per year supplying the automotive and
commercial industries with high-quality injection-molded parts and
assemblies. Quality is a given at MPC. In fact, the manufacturer has
been a Ford Q1 preferred supplier since 1989, and has received numerous
supplier awards from the likes of GM, Nissan, Harley Davidson and
Chrysler. In addition to oil caps, the facility manufactures a host of
other thermoplastic parts and assemblies including PCV valves,
thermostat housings, and quick-connect ports for ... |

Fast, reliable detection of printing
plate allocation errors with intelligent camera from Leuze electronic |
| |
Leuze:
KBA, one of the world’s leading printing press manufacturers, has come
up with a way of preventing printing plate allocation errors: The new
printing plate detection system Plate-Ident. The technology behind the
new development is an intelligent camera system with image processing
capability which was developed specifically for KBA by Leuze electronic.
The pressure is on for newspaper print businesses: The pressure on
modern newspaper producers to be abreast of the very latest news
developments means that hectic last-minute rushes and night shifts are
the norm. When production of the press proofs starts in the middle of
the night, everything has to be just right. Printing plate allocation
errors – in other words pages in the wrong order – can have fatal
consequences in terms of print waste and adherence to deadlines. Having
to stop the press again to correct the plate assignment means losing
productive time and can even result in delivery delays. In many cases,
new plates also have to be fitted, which entails additional waiting
periods. Depending on the size of the press system, avoiding this type
of allocation error, which happens all too easily given the hectic pace
of work, can offer substantial potential for savings. ... |

Sensors designed for extreme conditions |
| |
Leuze:
In the world of sensor technology, achieving functional reliability also
entails providing a practically-oriented design capable of withstanding
even the most hostile operating influences. Leuze electronic offers a
comprehensive selection of scanners for functions ranging from distance
measurement to identification and data transmission solutions, each
equipped with the relevant equipment features. Ranges, degrees of
measurement accuracy, transmission outputs, beam angles and response
behaviour are among the many technological properties which determine
the functional characteristics of
sensors. Performance in application is
also to a large extent a question of choosing the right
practically-oriented design and drawing on extensive application
expertise. In warehousing and conveying applications particularly,
system components are frequently exposed to air-borne pollution or
heavy-handed treatment under time pressure in daily operation, as well
as the whole range of adverse conditions from extremes of temperature
through to chemical cleaning agents and spurious light sources.
Practically-oriented product development from Leuze electronic is
characterized by features such as high performance reserves in
optical
sensors which render the components insensitive to the accumulation of
dirt, and guarantee reliable differentiation between objects and their
background. Warning outputs provide early indication of accumulating
dirt. Troublefree operation is also aided by resistance to spurious and
ambient light sources in Leuze electronic
optosensors by A2LS (Active
Ambient Light Suppression). ... |

A corrosion resistant
Coriolis Mass
Flowmeter |
| |
Krohne
has launched a new Tantalum version of its OPTIMASS 7300
Coriolis mass
flowmeter, to handle the highly aggressive and corrosive fluids found in
the chemical industry. The past decade has seen
Coriolis flowmeter
technology become the accepted standard in many chemical industries.
However, one area where the technology was challenged was the
measurement of highly aggressive and corrosive fluids. This was due to
the commercial availability of a suitable measuring tube material to
handle these chemicals. Generally, the wall thickness of Coriolis
measuring tubes are significantly less than the associated process
piping, which will tolerate a higher rate of corrosion before failing.
This is an area where wetted material selection for a Coriolis meter is
critical. Tantalum has been used by some Coriolis manufacturers in the
past, but the twin bent tube designs made these expensive. This was due
to the flange, flow splitter as well as the measuring tubes all being
made from Tantalum. ... |

Vibration Testing of Miniature S-Beam
(LSB200) & Miniature
Beam Load Cell
(LSM400) |
| |
|
During this past year FUTEK Advanced Sensor Technology, located
in Irvine California, found itself faced with yet another unique
challenge from a client requiring a specialized sensor. This new
challenge would not only require the sensors in question to endure the
usual environmental hazards of high/low temperature and moisture, but
also survive vibration testing to a controlled industry vibration
standard by an independent testing lab. What follows is a chronological
account of the preparation, testing and an analysis of the required
vibration testing. Download the FUTEK Sensor

Smart, Ultra-Small
Infrared Thermometer
Targets Medical Needs |
| |
Melexis:
The most prominent application for
infrared thermometers is measuring
body temperature to check for fever and illness. There are three main
types of IR fever thermometers: ear thermometers, forehead thermometers
and non-contact, distance-read thermometers. Measurement accuracy
depends on a) the calibration accuracy of the thermometer and b) how
accurately the temperature measured on the patient’s exterior can be
translated into an internal body temperature. For most medical
applications, a measurement accuracy of ±0.2°C or better is required.
Melexis now announces the availability of the MLX90615. This is the
world’s first intelligent
infrared thermometer integrated into the ultra
small TO-46 package commonly used in the manufacture of ear
thermometers. This ultra-small and cost effective
non-contact
thermometer delivers a fully calibrated digital temperature reading
achieved by integrating an infrared sensor with a custom signal
conditioning chip in a TO-46 package. The sensing element in the
MLX90615 is a silicon chip with a thin, micro-machined membrane ... |

BOS Q08M – First miniature
through-beam
sensor with pin-point LED |
| |
|
Balluff series BOS Q08M miniature
photoelectric sensors in the
rugged, block-style metal housing stand out with their compact form
factor and high precision. They are used wherever components of light
weight, small footprint and the greatest switching precision are
required, such as on robot gripper arms and miniature grippers. New in
this mini-photoelectric family is a performance-enhanced
through-beam
sensor with pin-point LED. The sensor, which replaces the previous red
light version, provides an absolutely homogenous light spot and a .2
meter extended range with generous performance reserves. The visible red
light opens up new applications to the user which used to require laser
sensors: Detection of especially small components as well as demanding
positioning tasks. The BOS Q08M sensor features resolution of down to
0.4mm and switches at the precise same location every time even with
laterally approaching targets. It is available with NPN or PNP output,
light-on or dark-on switching as well as cable or pigtail versions. A
3-pin M8 connector is used. ... |
