accelerometers. PCB® Series 3991/3501 MEMS shock
accelerometers
represent state-of-the-art industry technology for miniature,
high-amplitude, DC response
acceleration sensors, capable of measuring
long duration transient motion, as well as responding to and surviving
extremely fast rise times typical of high-g shock events. Offered in
packaged and OEM configurations, these sensors are able to fulfill a
variety of installation requirements. The design concepts were born from
more than 20 years of PCB® expertise in very high G shock (> 20,000 G)

acceleration sensing element, which is micro-machined from silicon, is

Precision Engineering: Measurement is vital to every manufacturer,
providing essential information to control processes and verify
productivity. The demand for increased accuracy, speed and functionality
– particularly from the micro manufacturing sector - is driving

of a coordinate measurement machine (CMM) is the probe. Hans Ott of IBS
Precision Engineering discusses the limitations of conventional tactile
probe systems and new technology that promises to take coordinate
metrology into the future. The main task of a conventional probe system
is to detect whether the tip is in contact with the work piece and to
provide a feedback signal to the CMM control so that all motion from the

interface and additional functions to simplify data acquisition and
analysis work. Based on the ribbon-style menus developed for Microsoft
Office 2007, the interface benefits users by grouping similar tasks so
that the correct tool can be more easily selected. Complex menus have
been replaced by function keys that are sorted by topic. Icons are of
different sizes depending on their relative importance. The icons are
combined with text and tooltips to help users select the correct

Electric: In lab automation small containers such as microwell
plates or test tubes are used in analytical processes of liquids. Since
the liquids to be analyzed are often available in limited quantities
only, this market has been confronted with an ever increasing demand for
highly precise
level measurement. Baumer is now responding to this
challenge with the new Series 09
ultrasonic sensors. They are capable of
measuring into wells with as little as 3,3 mm opening diameter,
providing a 0,1 mm resolution. This performance converted to a type 384 microplate results in a resolution of 1,09 microliters. Thus, the loss
of liquid can be kept within very tight limits. Additionally, the
measurement allows the detection of flaws at an early stage of the
analyzing process, which keeps the general process quality at a high
level. Efficiency concerning scanning speed is a further highlight of
the Series 09 sensors. Thanks to a housing width of less than 9 mm,
eight sensors arranged in-line are capable of scanning a type 96
microwell plate in one single cycle. The short response of as little as
seven milliseconds allows fast scanning rates, which in turn lead to
minimal process times. The benefit are a maximum of process quality at a

provides extremely flexible solutions in the area of eddy current
sensors for OEM applications. This flexibility ranges from cost-optimised
sensor systems with highly integrated electronics through to innovative
sensors with silver/palladium coils embedded in glass/ceramic. In this
way, these sensors achieve high levels of temperature stability and
service life that were previously not possible. The sensors can also be
used in the most difficult operating conditions (pressure,
temperature,
aggressive media, high vacuum). The sensors are easily adapted in terms
of form, size and design. Separate electronics is not necessary as all
the sensor’s electronic components can be incorporated in the
multiple-layer ceramic substrate. Therefore, solutions with detached and
with integrated electronics are now possible. Sensors with a
glass/ceramic substrate are intended for applications in aerospace and defence, semiconductors, power station construction or for industrial
